Ray Manvel Knutson
Ray Manvel Knutson, 83, a resident of Birdmont Health Care Center, formerly of Max Meadows, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997.
Graveside services and interment were held Friday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery with the Rev. Frank Bauman officiating.
He was born in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, a son of the late Dedrick and Mary Kringsberg Knutson. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and attended graduate school at the Missouri School of Mines. He was a retired resident geologist from the New Jersey Zinc Company.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Knutson Wood.
Survivors include his wife, Jane N. Knutson of Max Meadows; a daughter and two sons-in-law, Martha K. and Mark Child of Windsor, Conn., and Richard W. Wood of Wytheville; two sons and daughter-in-law, William N. Knutson of Wytheville, and Thomas R. and Maryanne Knutson of Trenton, N.J.; eight grandchildren, William K. Knutson, Sheena Knutson, Nathaniel Child, Amanda Child, Samuel Knutson, David Knutson, Todd Wood, and Sherry Luttrell; one great-grandson, Christopher Luttrell; and one brother and sister-in-law, Orton and Arlene Knutson of Jacksonville, Fla.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Max Meadows Fire Department, P.O. Box 432, Max Meadows, VA 24360.

W. Sherman Martin Sr.
W. Sherman Martin Sr., 65, of Roanoke, died Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, after a lengthy illness.
Services will be held at Windsor Hills Baptist Church on Monday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. C. Lawrence Dodson, the Rev. Ron Sutherland, and the Rev. Noland Teague officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Military honors will be by V.F.W. Post No. 1264.
He was retired from PYA-Monarch, Salem. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Imojean F. Martin; a son and daughter-in-law, William S. II and Martha A. Martin of Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Dawn M. and Edsel D. Stanley Jr. of Roanoke; five grandchildren, Edsel D. Stanley III, William A. Stanley, Alexandra S. Martin, Marshall T. Stanley, and William T. Martin, all of Roanoke; his mother, Winnie C. Martin of Wytheville; two brothers, Danny Martin of Killeen, Texas, and V.C. Martin II of Max Meadows; two sisters and brother-in-law, Blanche M. and Zaine Gray of Chesapeake, and Judy M. Stevens of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a sister-in-law, Peggy M. Eversole of Wytheville.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke.

Denver Burton Mills Sr.
Denver Burton Mills Sr., 72, a native of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997.
Memorial services were held Friday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., Richmond, with the Rev. Julie Denny-Hughes officiating. A private interment will be at the Westhampton Memorial Park.
He attended the College of William and Mary where he played football in his sophomore year of 1946 and was the first underclassman elected to be captain of the team. While at W&M, he was selected captain of the Associated Press All State Team, as well as AP's All Southern Conference Team. In 1989, he was selected to the Wytheville Sports Hall of Fame where he had played high school football for Wytheville High School, and in 1942, was selected the Outstanding Tailback in Virginia High School Football. He also played football while in the Army for the Richmond Rebels of the old American Football League, Chicago Cardinals. After having his football career cut short by knee injuries, he worked 40 years for the C&O Railroad Company (now part of the CSX System), and during that time held the post of president, secretary, local chairman and delegate in the United Transportation Union, representing railroad train service employees. After retirement, he worked part time as an insurance sales representative for the Locomotive Engineers and Conductors Mutual Protective Association. He was a member of the Thomas N. Nelson Masonic Lodge No. 351.
He was preceded in death by a son, Russell S. Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria Ann Mills; three sons, Denver B. Mills Jr., Arthur P. Mills and Timothy J. Mills; two daughters-in-law, Ann Mills and Crystal Mills; and five grandchildren.

James Everett Tickle
James Everett Tickle, 69, formerly of Bland, died Friday, Oct. 31, 1997, in a Williamsburg hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 2, at 4 p.m. at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, Richmond, with the Rev. Don R. Pizzeck officiating. Interment was in Grunwood Memorial Gardens, Richmond.
He was a retired engineer from Colonial Williamsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mason and Billie Lambert Tickle; two sons; a sister; and a brother.
Survivors by his wife, Virginia Sheppard Tickle of Williamsburg; a daughter, Jayne Boyce of Sarasota, Fla.; two step-children, Bonnie Pizzeck of Keysville, and Steven Sheppard of Richmond; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Gloria Fanning of Dover, Del., Nita King of Bland, and Elinor Holmes of Roanoke.
The family requests that contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation in lieu of flowers.

Robert B. Umberger
Robert B. "Barney" Umberger, 77, of West Monroe Street, Wytheville, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Robert Smith. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.
He was a retired electrician from the town of Wytheville and was a member of the Wytheville Volunteer Fire Dept. for 41 years, a member of the Homeland Trio.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Willard Umberger.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Irvin Umberger of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Ella Sue and Dewey M. Hagy of Wytheville; two grandchildren and spouses, Melissa and John W. Eastwood, and Kathy and Lee Scott, all of Wytheville; three great-grandchildren, Stacy Ann Eastwood, Joshua Aaron Scott, and Christopher Dewey Scott, all of Wytheville; sisters and brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, Louise and Cecil Irvin of Wytheville, Norma and Henry Wills of Columbus, Ohio, Jetti and Hugh Porter of Max Meadows, Audrey U. Simmerman of Wytheville, Ruth Wolford of Roanoke, Helen U. Mary Wampler Hale Baldwin
Mary Wampler Hale Baldwin, 78, of McDowell County, W.Va., formerly of Cripple Creek, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, in Edgemont Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Bruce Sheets. Interment was in the St. Peters cemetery, Cripple Creek.
She was a daughter of the late John H. and Lucy Dodson Wampler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Baldwin.
Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Odum of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Connie Hale of Wytheville; three sons, Calvin Taylor of Lynchburg, Lester Taylor of Patrick Springs, and Raymond Hale of Elbert, W.Va.; one sister, Cynthia Price of Galax; 10 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Oscar Carpenter
Oscar "Bill" Carpenter, 80, of Dayton, died Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren with the Rev. William H. Garber, and the Rev. Gene Knicely officiating. Burial followed in the Mount Clinton Church cemetery.
He was born on Aug. 3, 1917, in Wythe County, a son of the late Oscar Charles and Mallie Jane Black Carpenter. He was a member of Mount Bethel Church of the Brethren, and a member of the adult Sunday school class. He was an iron worker and employed with the Local Union No. 5 in Washington, D.C. He had lived in the Hillsville, Pulaski, Washington, D.C., and Strasburg before moving to Dayton in 1946. He had been failing in health since Oct. 6.
He is survived by his wife, Fleta Payne Carpenter, whom he married
Jan. 29, 1938; two sons, Julian Carpenter of Bergton, and Randy Tony Carpenter of Mitchells; two daughters, Norma C. Sites of Harrisonburg, and Carolyn "Sugar" Ware of Dayton; two sisters, Una Hestel Carpenter of Baltimore, Md., and Annie C. Primm of Max Meadows; five half-sisters, Amelia Wade, Ivy Bosley, both of Baltimore, Md., Hazel Hines of Barren Springs, Shirley Riggney of Draper, and Emma Sue Bays of Austinville; two stepsisters, Lorraine Viers of Pulaski, and Lida Lucas of Newport; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Hobert F. Cornett
Hobert F. Cornett, 77, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, died Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rance Edwards and the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
He was born in Grayson County, the son of the late Ealie and Virginia CeDella Taylor Cornett. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Club 55 Bowling League, and had attended the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Texas Repass Cornett.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Leona and Bill Mooney of Rural Retreat; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard F. and Linda Cornett of Rural Retreat; a sister, Mamie C. Slagle of Rural Retreat; four grandchildren, Tracy Cornett, John Mooney, David Cornett, and Marsha Underwood; special friends, Helen Odom, Carrie King, and Richard and Linda Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Teresa Fowler Cox, 46, of Lake Worth, Fla., died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, in the J.F.K. Memorial Hospital in Lake Worth, Fla.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12, in Lake Worth, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Cox; and her parents, Orville and Anna Katherine Fowler.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Cox, and Kevin Cox, both of Lake Worth, Fla.; a sister, Debra Fisher of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, Dennis Fowler of Roanoke; and a special aunt, Billie Fulford of Austinville.
Garland K. Hawkins
Garland K. Hawkins, 77, of Speedwell, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat.
He was retired from the town of Wytheville as chief operator of the water plant, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lanter Hawkins; and an infant son, James Randolph Hawkins.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Judy Hawkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Shirley and Kermit Crockett of Greensboro, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Gay Hawkins of Wytheville, and Roger and Donna Hawkins of Salem; a sister, Margaret Poole of Bel Air, Md.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Margarette Smith Puckett, 88, a resident of North Ridge Retirement Village in Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Wytheville, died Friday, Nov. 14, 1997.
Graveside services and interment will be held Sunday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. in the West End cemetery with Dr. Barry Losey officiating.
She was born in Princeton, W.Va., a daughter of the late Frank and Martha Alice Allen Smith and was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church and the Barbara Deal Circle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis D. Puckett, who was the owner/operator of the Greyhound Bus Station for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan P. Patrick of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Kelly Patrick Allen, Tracy Patrick Johnson, both of Raleigh, N.C., and Kathryn Bree Patrick of Fayetteville, N.C.; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lurline Ferguson of Roanoke, Adrienne LeSueur of Buckingham, and Inez Graham of Virginia Beach; and several nieces and nephews.
