Benny Bernard Arnold, 65, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10, at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. Don Crockett and Jack King officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Benny R. and Julia Dunford Arnold and was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
He is survived by his wife, Mozelle Clemons Arnold of the home; one daughter, Joyce Ann Arnold Stroupe of Austinville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ray M. Arnold of Austinville, and Perry Lee and Lisa Arnold of Lindside, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Brandon Lee Arnold, and Perry Chad Arnold; one sister and brother-in-law, Twyla and Glen Felts of Wytheville; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Pearl Arnold of Max Meadows, John and Mary Arnold, Ballard and Lorine Arnold, Harmon Arnold, Edward Arnold, and Earl and Margaret Arnold, all of Wytheville; and a special friend, Michael Scott.

James Willard Bowles
James Willard Bowles, 69, of Wytheville, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Graveside services were held Monday, June 9, at 2 p.m. at the West End cemetery.
He was a retired barber for over 32 years and was also retired from the Wytheville Community College with over 20 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Nell Lunsford Bowles of Wytheville; two daughters and son-in-law, Nell "Nellie" B. and Darrell Keith Hess, and Dara L. and Michael Sean Wood, all of Wytheville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James "Jimmy" Jr. and Margaret P. Bowles, Charles William "Guber" Bowles, and Robert Dale "Joe" and Cathy J. Bowles, all of Wytheville; two sisters, Stella B. Umberger, and Helen B. Smith, both of Wytheville; one brother, Edward L. Bowles of Rocky Gap; six grandchildren, William Jason Bowles, Justin Cody Bowles, Ethan Shawn Hess, Amanda Christian Hess, Bryan Ray Hedge, Shaunna Lynn Wood; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad.

Freda Frances Mitchem Jones, 71, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10, at 2 p.m. in the Crockett's Tabernacle church conducted by Rev. Richard Collins and Rev. Donnie Keller. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen A. "Bus" Jones; two sons, Paul D. Jones, and Edward F. Jones; a stepson, James E. Jones; and a brother, Floyd S. Mitchem.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nora J. and Charles W. Hoback of Wytheville; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Alma J. and Charles V. Woodard of Princeton, N.C.; two sons and four daughters-in-law, Hugh and Peggy Jones of Wytheville, John B. and Zona Jones of Ft. Chiswell, Valerie L. Jones, and Brenda S. Jones, both of Wytheville; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Dennis and Ramona Jones of Princeton, N.C.; a brother, Ellis E. Mitchem of Wytheville; a sister-in-law, Betty Mitchem of Wytheville; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.

Ola Maude Earhart Williams, 84, of Wytheville, died Sunday, June 8, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 10, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was born in Pulaski County, a daughter of the late Garland B. and Ruth Elizabeth Fry Earhart.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Dyer Earhart.
Survivors include her husband, Elmer G. Williams of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Elinor Williams of Christiansburg, and Ola M. and Charles Stowers of Rural Retreat; two grandchildren, Margaret and Robert Crigger, and Sharon Renee Stowers; a great-grandchild, Allison Crigger; a twin sister, Lola G. Long of Pulaski; and a brother, Garland Ewing Earhart of Pulaski.

Baxter Waldo Clark
Baxter Waldo Clark, 90, of the Longview Apartments in Wytheville, formerly of Crockett, died Tuesday, June 11, 1997, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 13, at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church with pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
He was a retired employee of the Carolina Power and Light Company and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Crockett.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles C. Clark.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Dove Clark of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, B. Randolph and Joyce Clark of Sheffield, Ala., Robey F. Hall of West Jefferson, N.C., and Jo Ann Clark of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; one sister, Jacquelin C. Neel of Bland; one brother, Charles Marvin Clark of Bland; and four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Chloe Lindsey Walters Coley
Chloe Lindsey Walters Coley, 93, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Wythe County, died Monday, June 9, 1997, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 14, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with pastor Edward Schaack officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.
She was born and raised in Rural Retreat, attended the College of William & Mary, and Madison College. She taught school for over 30 years, starting in a one-room school outside Wytheville in 1925, then transferred to Rural Retreat School where she taught until her retirement. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat, and moved to Little Rock, Ark., in 1966 where she lived until 1993. In Little Rock, she was active in the Eastern Star, having served as grand worthy matron of Esther Chapter there. At her death, she was a resident of the Alois Alzheimer Center in Cincinnati.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry H. Walters, and Wayne Coley.
Survivors include one daughter, Lin Walters Lyon of Cincinnati, Ohio; a special friend, Jim Lohr of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and cousins.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home.

Gladys Mae Wall Cook, 86, of Route 1, Ivanhoe, died Friday, June 13, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. A.C. Ashford and the Rev. Hal Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Edgar Fletcher and Donna Ward Wall. She was a lifelong member of the Ivanhoe Church of God of Prophecy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Dyer Cook; and two sons, Charles D. Cook Jr., and Waldo Frank Cook.
Survivors include five daughters, Callie Jones, Dorothy Aker, both of Wytheville, Lois Williams of Richmond, Carol Coleman, and Brenda Berryman, both of Max Meadows; a son, Roger D. Cook of Ivanhoe; three sisters, Margaret Weatherman, Helen Wall, and Katherine King, all of Ivanhoe; a special neighbor, James Roland Poole; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home, or at the residence at any time.

Everett Wiley Phillippi, 67, of Wytheville, died Thursday, June 12, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 16, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home chapel. Interment will be in the West End cemetery conducted by Rev. Sonny Ayers. The American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military graveside rites.
He was a son of the late Wiley F. and Ada Settle Phillippi.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia Mullins of Danville; two sons, Everett Phillippi Jr., and Wayne Phillippi, both of Danville; one sister, Helen Lane of Wytheville; one brother, Walter Phillippi of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.

Sarah Ellen Mustard Atkinson, 71, of Roanoke, died Monday, June 16, 1997, at her home after battling cancer.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 19, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Bruce Robinson officiating. Burial will be in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
She was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Bland County, the daughter of the late Robert Henry and Clanie Bird Mustard. She was a graduate of Lewis-Gale Nursing School and was a registered nurse who practiced in Roanoke Valley and was a former president of the Busy Bee Seniors Club at Riverdale Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Thomas Atkinson of Roanoke; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dock and Elizabeth Atkinson, Robert Atkinson, and David and Rhonda Atkinson, all of Roanoke; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lynne McNeely and friend, Jeff Burks, Penny and Daniel Williams, all of Roanoke, and Cathy and Mark Hubbard of Check; one sister and brother-in-law, Lela and John Sink of Wirtz; four grandchildren, Michael McNeely and wife, Paige, Brandon Atkinson, Hunter Williams, and Callie Hubbard.

Joseph Foster Blair, 72, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Saturday, June 14, 1997, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe Carrico and Rev. A.C. Ashford officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Joseph J. and Lollah Jackson Blair. He was a former real estate agent, a farmer, and was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Wythe County Farm Bureau and a former member of the VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Huddle Blair of the home; one daughter, Cynthia Ellen Blair of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis F. Blair, and Kenneth H. and Edith Blair, all of Max Meadows; one step-granddaughter, Angelia Eversole Jennings; four sisters, Helen Blair of Charleston, W.Va., Elizabeth "Cot" Blair Dutton of Max Meadows, Dottie Blair, and Lois Blair, both of Wytheville; one brother, Ewing "Pud" Blair of Route 1, Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul Clark Blair, 75, of Route 1, Ivanhoe, died Monday, June 16, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Martha Ellen Walk Blair. He was retired from the New Zinc Co., a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the IVA Lodge No. 173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
He is survived by his wife, Janie R. Blair of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Nancy and Benny Sparks, and Alice Ann Blair, all of Ivanhoe; six sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin M. and Gwendolyn Jackson Blair, Carl Odell Blair and his fiancé, Deni Sparks, Barry W. and Dona Blair, all of Ivanhoe, Roger C. and Suzanne Blair of Route 2, Wytheville, Jerry Blair, and Gerald Lee and Melissa Blair, all of Ivanhoe; three sisters, Elizabeth King of Max Meadows, Esther Brammer of Bassett, and Juanita Williams of Richmond; three brothers, Curtis Blair of Route 3, Wytheville, Jimmy Blair of Max Meadows, and Clyde Blair of Ivanhoe; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Maude Catherine Thomas Colley
Maude Catherine Thomas Colley, 95, of Honaker, died Friday, June 13, 1997, at the Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Carson Powers officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill cemetery in Bastian.
Born March 10, 1902, in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Stewart and Lydia Deel Thomas. She was a homemaker. She started prayer meeting in Suiter, Bland County, in 1930. In July 1936, the Rev. J.O. Ure met with the prayer meeting group at the home of Richard and Maude Colley in Bastian and organized the Bastian Church of God of which she is a charter member.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Colley; a daughter, Virginia Dare Colley; a son, Cecil Colley Sr.; a grandson, Butch Adkins; a granddaughter, Carolyn Bailey; a brother, Albert Thomas; and three sisters, Martha Russ, Lydia Hackney, and Sally Jakrzewski.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Dean Colley of Honaker; three daughters and son-in-law, Sue Woodward of Atlanta, Ga., Earnie Adams of Kingsport, Tenn., and Pat and Wallace Barton of Council; a brother, Brady Thomas Sr. of Grundy; two sisters, Mary Baldwin of St. Augustine, Fla., and Nancy Hackney of Safety Harbor, Fla.; and 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
