Lunnie Sanders McHone

Lunnie Sanders McHone, 90, of Max Meadows, died Wednesday, May 28, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 30, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Donald Drake and the Rev. G.L. East Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late Franklin Snyder and Elizabeth Inman McHone. He was retired from the N&W Railway and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Sue Lucado McHone.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Evelyn and Garnie East of Max Meadows, Irene Manuel of Elon College, N.C., Margaret and Clyde Gallimore of Nortonville, Ky., and Helen and Richard Dennis of Mebane, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, J.R. and Libby McHone of Garrettsville, Ohio, Ralph and Carolyn McHone of Kernersville, N.C., and Jerry and Shirley McHone of Max Meadows; one sister, Ocie Gravley of Belspring; and 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Minnie Massengill Shuler

Minnie Massengill Shuler, 78, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, May 28, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Graveside services were held Friday, May 30, at 11 a.m. in the West End cemetery conducted by Billy Johnson.

She was a daughter of the late Joseph H. and Orpha Davis Massengill.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Erma and Artie Gibson of Wytheville; one sister, Ella McKnight of Wytheville; a special niece, Judy Pannell of Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandchildren and spouses, Libby and Charlie Burkett of Rural Retreat, Shelia and Lester Abrahams of Wytheville, and Glenn and Teresa Gibson of Rural Retreat; four great-grandchildren, Chris Burkett, Les Abrahams, Jennifer Abrahams, Erica Gibson and Leah Gibson.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville was in charge of the arrangements.

Shelby Gibson West

Shelby Gibson West, 60, of Newport News, and formerly of Wytheville, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, in Riverside Regional Convalescent Center.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the Peninsula Memorial Park.

She was a secretary at Newport News Shipbuilding. She was a daughter of the late Arthur Hudson Gibson and Stella Odema Crigger Gibson.

She is survived by a faithful friend, Edward Phillips; a daughter, Deborah L. West of Newport News; three sisters, Louise Crigger Pickett of Yorktown, Virginia Crigger Sult of Crockett, and Dorothy Crigger Ayers of Wytheville; two brothers, Arthur M. Gibson, and Stuart D. Gibson, both of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News is in charge of the arrangements.

James Clyde Akers Jr.

James Clyde "J.C." Akers Jr., 55, of Max Meadows, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, in the Edgemont Nursing Home.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

He was an employee of Amsco for 20 years and a member of the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he was the treasurer and usher. He attended Virginia Tech and was a 1959 graduate of George Wythe High School.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Akers.

Survivors include his wife, Katheryn Mathena Akers of Max Meadows; a daughter, Amber Akers of Max Meadows; four sons and a daughter-in-law, James C. "J.C." III and Tara Akers of Wytheville, Jonathan Akers, Nathanael Akers, and Dale Dice, all of Max Meadows; his mother Georgia M. Akers of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Orville Porter of Wytheville; two special friends, Rodney Hovencamp and Lloyd Miller; three nieces, one nephew, three aunts, and two uncles.

Those preferring to do so may make memorial contributions to the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund.

Ruth Painter Humphrey

Ruth Painter Humphrey, 88, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, June 2, 1997, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 5, at 11 a.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating.

She was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church, had attended the College of William & Mary, and was a retired school teacher at the Rural Retreat Elementary School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Douglas Humphrey Sr.

Survivors include one son, R. Douglas Humphrey Jr., DDS, of Rural Retreat; one grandson, Brad Humphrey of Louisa; one sister, Doris P. Grubb of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the charity of their choice.

Mildred Newberry Kidd

Mildred Newberry Kidd, 91, of Bland, died Friday, May 30, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment followed in the Temple Hill cemetery in Bland.

She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Walter Stephen and Cynthia Stuart Newberry. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, a retired cook at Bastian Elementary School with 20 years service, and co-owner of Kidd Chevrolet in Bland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira S. Kidd; two sons, David N. Kidd and John W. Kidd.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mellissie and Jimmie Gibson of Bland; two sisters, Alma N. Waddle of Bland, and Marie Doughman of Roanoke; two brothers, Walter R. "Randy" Newberry of Wytheville, and Robert G. "Bob" Newberry of Bland; two daughters-in-law, Dot S. Kidd of Bland, and Rosie K. Warden of Wytheville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Fire Department or the Bland Rescue Squad.

Eunice Clark Porter McDaniel

Eunice Clark Porter McDaniel, 80, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at the Crossroad Church of God with the Rev. David Bane, Rev. Connie Black and Rev. Hal Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Charlie E. and Fannie Elizabeth Poole Porter. She was a former member of Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Full Gospel Bible Mission.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elsie Elizabeth McDaniel; a grandson, Michel E. McDaniel; and a sister, Nina Jean Blair.

Survivors include her husband, Paul McDaniel of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Mildred Annette Talbert of Pulaski, and Sharon and Ernest Sayers of Route 3, Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Janet McDaniel of Route 3, Wytheville, and Edward and Thelma McDaniel of Pulaski; one brother, Rev. Garland Porter of Route 3, Wytheville; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Emma Dell King Melton

Emma Dell King Melton, 88, of Route 1, Ivanhoe, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Taz Reid officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah Jane Rogers Monahan and was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Chris Neal King Sr., and William I. Melton.

Survivors include one daughter, Ethel King Blair of Ivanhoe; two sons and daughter-in-law, Chris Neal Jr. and Jean King of Atkins, and William Henry King of the home; five grandchildren, Sarah Blair of Pulaski, Charles Edward Blair of Ivanhoe, Janet Blair-Emmons of Christiansburg, Rebecca Blair of Ivanhoe, and Robert Wayne King of Austinville; three great-grandchildren, Kimberly Blair, Charles Robert Blair, and Patchouli Emmons; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 502, Austinville, VA 24312.

Clifton Leon Sparks

Clifton Leon "Pete" Sparks, 62, of Route 1, Ivanhoe, died Friday, May 30, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 2, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with Jack King officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Russell Sparks; and his father, John Clifton Sparks.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Sparks of Austinville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Ronald L. Sparks of High Point, N.C., and Barry W. and Joyce Sparks of Columbus, Ohio; his mother, Addie Allred of Ivanhoe; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Chuck Shively of Ivanhoe; two brothers and sister-in-law, "Benny" and Nancy Sparks of Ivanhoe, and Robert Allred of Florida; and six grandchildren.

Lawrence Pritchard Stephens Sr.

Lawrence Pritchard Stephens Sr., 85, of Wytheville, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, in the Asbury Center of Birdmont.

Graveside services were held Monday, June 2, at 2 p.m. in the East End cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert Peterson.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1912, in Wytheville, and was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Seabee Corps, and was an avid sportsman. He worked for 36 years in the construction business as a pipefitter. He was the son of the late Stephen Sanders and Mary Pritchard Stephens.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Virginia Eversole Stephens; two sisters, Helen Stephens, and Flora Stephens; and an adopted brother, Eddie Stephens.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Sanders Stephens of Columbus, Miss., and Lawrence Pritchard Stephens Jr. of Sumter, S.C.; one sister, Ethel Brown of Wytheville; two brothers, Garland Stephens, and Frank Stephens, both of Wytheville; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Mabel Virginia Davis

Mabel Virginia "Jennie" Davis, 77, of Wichita Falls, Texas, died Friday, May 9, 1997, at her residence.

Memorial services will be held June 22 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crockett with the Rev. Larry Bolliger officiating.

Born in Crockett on Dec. 8, 1919, she had lived in Wichita Falls for 15 years. She was a retired L.V.N., and a member of Westside Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mary B. Davis; three sisters, Lydia Hall, Flora Blessing, and Alene Davis; and six brothers, James Davis, Beauford Davis, Bernice Davis, Foster Davis, John Davis and Carl Davis.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen Carter of Salem, and Ruby Irene Huffman of Roanoke; two brothers, Walters Davis of Cleveland, Tenn., and Conard Davis of Bowie, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorials be made to the Faith Mission, 1300 Travis, Wichita Falls, Texas 76301.

Dorothy Wright Stephens

Dorothy Wright Stephens, 66, of Pulaski, formerly of Wytheville, died Tuesday, June 3, 1997, in a Pulaski hospital.

Graveside services were held Thursday, June 5, at 11 a.m. at the East End cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie T. Stephens.

Survivors include two daughters, Tena Marie Stephens and Sandra Kay Stephens, both of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Vickie Stephens of Wytheville; three sisters and brother-in-law, Nannie and Glen Wright of Ivanhoe, Faye Campbell of Wytheville, and Edna Farmer of Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren, Jackie Stephens, Erica Stephens, and Joshua Stephens.
