George William Cregger Sr.
George William Cregger Sr., 77, of Hedgefield Terrace, Wytheville, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, in Highland Manor Nursing Home, Dublin.
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at the Appalachian Conference of the Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, Dublin.
Born Oct. 4, 1920 in Max Meadows, he was the son of the late Edward Cregger and Lillie Mae Adams Cregger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Slaughter Cregger; and one brother, Randle Cregger.
Survivors include two sons, George William Cregger Jr. of Springfield, and John David Cregger of Wytheville; and two sisters, Hazel Fink and Leona Macy, both of Pulaski.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 22, at the graveside following the funeral services.

William David Crockett
William David Crockett, 78, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Wednesday, May 14, 1997, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, May 20, at 3 p.m. in the St. John's Episcopal Church Columbarium conducted by Rector Peter Ouzts.
He was the son of the late William David and Mary Cassell Crockett. He was a well known Wythe County farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Raper Crockett.
Survivors include three sons, David Crockett and Lewis Crockett, both of Wytheville, and Michael Crockett of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; one sister, Ellen Rauhof of Charleston, S.C.; and one brother, Lawrence Crockett of Vero Beach, Fla.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church.

Prudie Laurine Harvel Taylor
Prudie Laurine Harvel Taylor, 68, of Route 1, Bland, formerly of Dismal Route, Oakwood, died Friday, May 16, 1997, in Buchanan General Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 19, at 1 p.m. at the Bland Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bruce Shelton, Rev. James Chapman and Rev. Glen Hughes officiating. Entombment followed in the Greenhills Memory Garden Mausoleum in Claypool Hill.
Born in Pike County, Ky. she was a daughter of the late Henry Harve and Dahlia Potter Harvel. She had been a resident of Bland for the past three years, was a member of the Bland Pentecostal Holiness Church and was housewife.
She was preceded in death by five sisters.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Lauchie Taylor of Bland; one daughter, Charlena Prater of Bland; three sons, Harvey Nelson Taylor of Edgewater, Fla., Thurman R. Taylor of Honaker, and Irvin R. Taylor of Whitewood; one sister, Loretta Skeens of Mouthcard, Ky.; one brother, Harvey H. Harvel of Mouthcard, Ky.; and five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren.

Annabelle Barger Wilson
Annabelle Barger Wilson, 96, of Ceres, died Monday, May 19, 1997, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at Sharon Lutheran Church, Ceres, with the Rev. Joe Shumate officiating. Burial will follow in the Sharon cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service time.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Kent Wilson; and one son, S/Sgt. Owen T. Wilson.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Harry and Barbara S. Wilson of Dayton, Ohio, and James and Betty G. Wilson of Marion; three grandchildren, Rebecca W. Shited of Danville, Ky., Thomas G. Wilson of Christiansburg, and Diane W. Catley of Blacksburg; and three great-grandchildren.

Hugh Leftwich "Shaney" Flanagan Jr., 66, of Wytheville died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 22, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bob Peterson officiating. Interment followed in the King's Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Crockett. American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military rites.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg, Md. and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired driver for Metro Bus Lines in Washington, D.C. with 36 years service.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh L. Flanagan Sr.; and a daughter, Karen Elizabeth Flanagan.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Lawson Flanagan of the home; five daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Paul Louthian, Katherine and Tom Dorrycott, all of Poolesville, Md., Terri and George Pate of Garland, Texas, Janice and Joe Kidwell of Monrovia, Md., and Frances Sellers of Fredrick, Md.; his mother, Elma Catron Cregger of Big Spring, Texas; his step-mother, Mabel B. Flanagan of Crockett; a half-brother, Billy Cregger of Texas; and seven grandchildren, two step-granddaughters, one step great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herbert Buford "Hob" King, 84, of Austinville died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 24, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with Elder Sidney Rakes officiating. Interment will follow in the Little Vine cemetery in Carroll County.
He was a retired employee of the New Jersey Zinc Company.
He was preceded in death by a son, Blake King.
Survivors include his wife, Avis Sutphin King of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Linda King of North Carolina; a step-daughter, Sandra Jean Alderman of Rural Retreat; a step-son and spouse, Ronnie and Sandra Sutphin of Austinville; a sister, Ruby Hill of Charlottesville; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Lucille King Kitts, 79, of Washington Street, Wytheville, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, in Kegley Manor Nursing Home.
Funeral services were Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church conducted by Rev. Bob Peterson. Interment was in the West End cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lee Kitts Sr.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Steve Lester, and Peggy and Bob Biller, all of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred L. Jr. and Phyllis Kitts, and Sidney L. and Jackie Kitts, all of Wytheville; one sister, Jannette Umberger of Wytheville; one brother, William Henry "Bud" King of Lexington, N.C.; a special nephew, W. Harold Kitts; a special friend, Hazel Cornett; three granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Wendy and Doozie Crigger, Sarah and Joe Marks, and Melanie Shumate Kitts; two grandsons and granddaughter-in-law, Stephen and Lisa Lester, and Todd Kitts; three great-grandsons, Dean, Drew, and Hardy; and two great-granddaughters, Leah and Tiffany.

Gladys Jacobsen Malin, 87, of Wytheville died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, in the Edgemont Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 24, at 3 p.m. at the Wytheville Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Bob Parrish officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
She received her nursing degree from Glenwood Adventist Hospital in Glendale, Calif. and was a co-founder of the Wytheville Hospital and Sanitarium where she served as director of nursing for over 20 years. She was a member of the Wytheville Seventh Day Adventist Church where she served as director of music for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Wendell E. Malin; and a son, Dr. Wendell E. Malin Jr.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce M. and Lloyd P. Lind of Huntington Beach, Calif., Martha M. and John H. Love III of Erie, Pa., and Donna Sue Malin of Wytheville; one son and daughters-in-law, Donald L. and Carolyn Malin of Wytheville, and Elizabeth Malin Andrew of New Market; 13 grandchildren, Cheryl Malin Thrall, Glenn Malin, Gary Malin, Linda Lind Camardi, Diana Lind, Karen Lind, Allen Lind, John H. Love IV, Marcus Love, Erik Love, Julia Malin, Levi Malin, and Joseph Malin; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Ruth Laubach of Wytheville.

Edgar Allen Newberry, 76, of Route 1, Bland, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, W.Va.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 1997, at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Morning Star cemetery in Bland.
He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Walter Stephen and Cynthia Stuart Newberry. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Salem, and had attended the Green Hill Church in Bland. He was a parts department clerk at Kidd Chevrolet in Bland and at Berglund Chevrolet in Roanoke until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Lorene Dillow Newberry of the home; one daughter, Dianna Lynn Newberry of Bland; three sisters, Mildred N. Kidd, Alma N. Waddle, both of Bland, and Marie N. Doughman of Roanoke; two brothers, Walter "Randy" Newberry of Wytheville, and Robert G. "Bob" Newberry of Bland; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Whitman "Beth" Pratt, 78, of Route 1, Draper, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at the Drapers Valley Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Preston O. Sartelle Jr. and the Rev. Terrie L. Sternberg officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was born in Spring Valley (Grayson County) on Nov. 16, 1919, a daughter of the late Sidney Price Whitman and Rosamond Mae Vaughan Whitman. She was a life-long farmer and an active member of the Drapers Valley Presbyterian Church and was also involved in many civic, community and farming organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Temple Pratt Sr.; three sisters, Mary Crockett, Lucille Graham and Sidney Price Whitman; and two brothers-in-law, Jack Crockett and Rex Painter.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis T. Jr. and Jackie Pratt, Mark and Susan Pratt, and J.W. Bowman, all of Draper; three grandchildren, Chris Pratt, Sarah Pratt and Andy Pratt; two sisters, Virginia Delp of Elk Creek, and Patsy Painter of Cripple Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Gay Patton Sheffey.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Kay Sheffey of Wytheville; two daughters, Mary Martha Sheffey and Kayla Reneé Sheffey, both of Wytheville; his father, Frank Lee Sheffey of Wytheville; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernest E. and Ruby Sheffey, Donald R. and Robin Sheffey, Lawrence and Sandra Sheffey, and John W. and Christy Sheffey, all of Wytheville; and his grandmother, Elsie Sheffey of Dublin.

Fredrick Leon Akers, 57, of Max Meadows, died Monday, May 26, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, at 2 p.m. in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed at the church one hour before service time.
He was a retired guard for the Bland Correctional Farm.
He is survived by his parents, Arthur T. and Clara J. Akers of Max Meadows; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Roncie "Buddy" Morrison of Alexandria, and Phyllis and David Kirby of Max Meadows; one brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Sibbie Akers of Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.
