James Ralph Burnette, 62, of Wytheville died Sunday, May 11, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Steve Tilley and the Rev. Theldon Burnette. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Clara Griffith Burnette.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Cox Burnette of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Truman Jones of Wytheville; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Theldon and Karen Burnette of Louisville, Ky., Michael Burnette, and Keith Burnette, both of the home; four sisters, Frances Pilkins of South Boston, Annie Stevens of Wytheville, Freda Dermont of Hickory, N.C., and Barbara McGuinness of Wytheville; and four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Daniel Jones, 59, of Rural Retreat died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 14, at 11 a.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church cemetery in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating.
He was born in Smyth County, a son of the late Roy Daniel and Faye Irene Woods Jones.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Harold Jones; and a sister, Mildred Jones.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Tony Catron, Cindy Jones, all of Roanoke, and Selena and Scott Mitchell of Rural Retreat; two sons, Robert Darrel Jones of Roanoke, and Dale Jones of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Frances and Isom Sturgill of Rural Retreat, and Mary Ann Coley of Marion; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Anna Sue Jones, Jimmy and Margaret Jones, and Fred and Jan Jones, all of Rural Retreat; and two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Juanita Sprouse Armbrister, 82, of Arlington, formerly of Wytheville, died Thursday, May 8, 1997, in the Cherry Dale Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Allen Armbrister; and three children, Jean Armbrister, Roy and Walter Armbrister.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Snyder of Colorado, Jeanette Burke of Front Royal, and Darlene Roberts of Burke; two sons, Phillip Richard Shephard of Pennsylvania, and Malcolm Shephard of Texas; and several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Mary Miles Wolfe Kincer, 74, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and formerly of Crockett, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, in the Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at the Kings Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Crockett with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating.
She was the widow of Edward Lee "Red" Kincer.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William Fred and Shirley Kincer of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one grandson, Chris Kincer of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two granddaughters, Rita Kincer, and Tamren Kincer, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

James Olin Cox, 41, of Lebanon, Va., formerly of Swords Creek, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at a Lebanon, Va., hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker, Va., with the Rev. Claude Junior Ray and the Rev. David Perkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Perkins cemetery at Swords Creek, Va.
Born March 11, 1960, at Arlington, Va., he was a son of Stella McKinney Cox of Rural Retreat, Va., and the late James Howard Cox. He had resided in the Lebanon area for the past three months, moving from Swords Creek, Va. He was a former employee of Bristol Compressors at Bristol, Va.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jamie Danielle Cox.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Perkins Cox of the home; one daughter, Veronica Perkins of the home; two sons, Joshua Perkins and James "Peanut" Cox, both of the home; his mother, Stella McKinney Cox of Rural Retreat, Va.; one sister, Sheila Johnson of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Ricky Cox of Pulaski, Va., and Terry Cox of Rural Retreat, Va.; one special niece, Aereal Pough; several other nieces and on nephew.

Earl C. Sherertz Jr., 81, of Shenandoah, Va., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 21, at the Kyger & Trobaugh Funeral Home Chapel at Elkton, Va., with the Rev. Stephen Creech and the Rev. Hudson Nuckols officiating. Interment followed at the E.U.B. cemetery in Shenandoah, Va.
He was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Washington, D.C., and was the son of the late Earl C. Sherertz Sr. and Katie Sherertz. He retired from the C&P Telephone Co., now Verizon, in Washington, D.C., in 1976. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and was past president of the Suitland, Md., Lions Club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II stationed at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C.
He was preceded in death by son, Earl C. Sherertz III, in 1980.
Survivors include his wife Sylvia "Sue" Felty Sherertz of Shenandoah, Va., formerly of Wytheville, Va.; a son, Larry Sherertz of Washington, Va.; three daughters, Sallie Sherertz of Lorton, Va., Susan Boone of Woodbridge, Va., and Lindy Sherertz Jaouad of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Katherine Gartrell of Arlington, Va., and Genevieve Sherertz of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She was a native of Saltville and Roanoke, and had worked for K&W Cafeteria for about 25 years.

Mabel Virginia "Jennie" Davis, 77, of Wichita Falls, Texas, died Friday, May 9, 1997, at her residence.

Born in Crockett on Dec. 8, 1919, she had lived in Wichita Falls, Texas for 15 years. She was a retired L.V.N. and a member of Westside Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mary B. Davis; three sisters, Lydia Hall, Flora Blessing, and Alene Davis.
Survivors include two sisters, Helen Carter of Salem, and Ruby Irene Huffman of Roanoke; two brothers, Walters Davis of Cleveland, Tenn., and Conard Davis of Bowie, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

William R. McGrady, 73, of Pulaski, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, in Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Thomas officiating. Burial followed in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.
He was born in Carroll County on Jan. 12, 1924, and was a son of the late Harley McGrady and Abbie Worrell McGrady. He was retired employee of Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Alley McGrady of Pulaski; four daughters, Betty Dobbins, Sue Bratton, Marie Martin, and Virginia Walker, all of Pulaski; four sons, Kenneth McGrady, Ronnie McGrady, Jimmy McGrady, and Victor McGrady, all of Pulaski; three sisters, Frieda Bedsaul, Josie Jackson, both of Wytheville, and Helen Thomas of Speedwell; five brothers, Herman McGrady, Howard McGrady, Paul McGrady, all of Rural Retreat, Billy McGrady, and Junior McGrady, both of Wytheville; and 12 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ulmont Reed Taylor
Ulmont Reed "Bo" Taylor, 69, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, in Sevierville, Tenn.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery. American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military rites.
He was born in Barbourville, Ky., a son of the late Floyd Ulmont Taylor and Mary Hughes Taylor Dishman. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and completed 20 years service with the National Guard, retiring as a CWO4 (warrant officer). After graduation from Union College in Barbourville, Ky. he worked for the National Guard for 13 years. He moved to Wytheville in 1964 and opened the Social Security Administration office and was transferred to Ahoskie, N.C., where he served until his retirement in 1993 after 45 years of government service. He returned to Wytheville in 1994. He was of the Methodist faith and attended St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Ahoskie, N.C.; a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of the Wytheville Lions Club and the Wythe County Historical Society.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lilly Dishman Bangert.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cravens Taylor of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Deanna Stephens Taylor of Mechanicsville, Michael and Mary Cundiff Taylor of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Harold Taylor of Wilmington, N.C.; three grandchildren, Lee Taylor, Reed Taylor, and Shelley Taylor; one brother, William Dishman of Danville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Alexander R. "Alex" Collins, 82, of Mt. Airy, N.C., formerly of Max Meadows, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, in a Mt. Airy hospital.

He made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Raymond Gravley, for the past eight years in Mt. Airy, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Doss Collins; a daughter, Nina C. Rogers; a son, Billy Eugene Doss; and a granddaughter, Marsha Riggins.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda C. and Raymond Gravley of Mt. Airy, N.C.; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Bruce Collins of Mt. Airy, N.C., Alexander R.
