Virginia Alice Vandell

Virginia Alice "Sis" Vandell, 78, of Bastian, formerly of Hemphill, W.Va., died Monday, March 31, 1997, at the residence of Janice and Bill Laney.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mike Bradshaw officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill cemetery.

She was born in Hemphill, W.Va., a daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Lawless Bromfield and was active in the First Church of God on Stewart Street in Welch from many years.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Bromfield.

Survivors include her husband, James Lacy "Lace" Vandell of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Bill Laney of Bastian, and Trula and David Gray of Buies Creek, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Audrey Vandell of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Ron and Emma Lou Vandell of Summerville, S.C., and John Vandell of Bastian; a sister, Tootsie Anderson of Virginia Beach; a brother, Donnie Bromfield of Portland, Ore.; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 2, from noon until service time at the Newberry Funeral Home.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland is in charge of the arrangements.

Earnest Eugene Hall

Earnest Eugene "Gene" Hall, 78, of Elk Creek died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, at the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5, at 11 a.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence, with the Rev. Gary Wilson and Rev. Curtis Stoots officiating. Interment will be in Bethany cemetery, Wythe County.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Hall; and three grandchildren, Lisa Hall Anderson, Andrew Shane Hall and David Wayne Hall.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Simmerman Hall of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Genetta and Charles Cornett of Wytheville, Rhonda Adams of Elk Creek, and Teresa and Ricky Whalen of Speedwell; five sons and daughters-in-law, John and Ruth Hall of Elk Creek, Jerry Hall of the home, Ralph and Pam Hall, Fred and Barbara Hall, all of Max Meadows, and Gary and Shirley Hall of Woodlawn; a daughter-in-law, Rita Hall of Wytheville; a special friend, Jimmy Delby; and 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

William W. Holliday

William W. "Bill" Holliday, 83, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, at 8 p.m. Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Neville Mozingo and Rev. George Mowrey officiating. Graveside services were held Friday, April 4, at 11 a.m. at Rose Lawn cemetery with the Rev. George Mowrey officiating.

He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and was retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad with 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Callahan Holliday of Marion; two daughters Linda Holliday Grubb and Peggy Holliday Frye, both of Marion; two sons-in-law, Douglas V. Grubb and Foye C. Frye, both of Marion; three grandchildren, Jennifer Grubb Henson and husband, Michael, Douglas Grubb II, all of Marion, and William "Billy" Frye of Blacksburg; one great-grandson, Matthew Henson of Marion; and one sister, Eve H. Groseclose of Speedwell.

Seaver-Brown Funeral Service in Marion is in charge of the arrangements.

Frances June Phillippi Janota

Frances June Phillippi Janota, 73, of East Hazelcrest, Ill., formerly of Wytheville, died Friday, March 28, 1997.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at the Rosemoor Funeral Home, Lansing, Ill. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens South, Worth, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Janota.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Jim Horneman of Lebanon, Ill.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Marge Janota of Hendersonville, Nev., and Craig and Kyrie Janota of East Hazelcrest, Ill.; four grandchildren, Mollie Villella, Jason Janota, Christopher Janota, and Nathan Janota; one great-grandchild, C.J. Janota; two sisters, Mrs. H.B. (Katherine) Snider of Wytheville, and Mrs. David (Mary) Farmer of Pulaski; and numerous nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, David Rutman of Troy, Mich.

Rosemoor Funeral Home in Lansing, Ill. was in charge of the arrangements.

Margaret Poston

Margaret "Ruth" Poston, 86, of Wytheville died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, in the Edgemont Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Robert Layell officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County the daughter of the late Charles Lucien and Agnes Jones Poston. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

She is survived by four nieces and spouses, Nancy Lambert of Virginia Beach, Gail and Nick Moore of Richmond, Delores Poston, and Linda and Carl Suthers, all of Wytheville; and several great nieces and nephews.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Barton Shane Blessing

Barton Shane "Bart" Blessing, 26, of Cleveland, Tenn. died Sunday, April 6, 1997, in an Atlanta, Ga., hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 8, at 8 p.m. in the Buckner-Rush Funeral Home, Tennessee, with the Rev. Bill Campbell officiating. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 9, at 8 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Albert Bowles. Interment will be Thursday, April 10, in the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church cemetery.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, with a bachelors degree in social work, and received an associate degree from Hiwassee College, and graduated from Bradley Central High. He was very active with the Georgia Donor Services and the Kidney Foundation, and had served as a counselor for the Georgia Children's Kidney Camp.

He is survived by his parents, Betty Jo and Bill Blessing, of Cleveland, Tenn., formerly of Wythe County; a brother, Mike Blessing of Elijay, Ga.; and a grandmother, Ruth Blessing of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 9, from 6 until service time at the Grubb Funeral Home

Memorials may be made to the Hiwassee College, 225 Hiwassee College Drive, Madisonville, Tenn. 37354; to Wesley Foundation, 216 College Heights Ave., Murfreesboro, Tenn. 37130; or to the American Kidney Fund, 7325 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, Md. 20814.

Lonnie P. Corvin

Lonnie P. Corvin, 93, of Route 5, Wytheville, died Friday, April 4, 1997, in Evansham Manor.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 7, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Peterson. Interment was in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery.

He was the son of the late Posey and Ida Eversole Corvin and was a member of the Galilee Christian Church. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for 65 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1937; two daughters in 1985 and 1986; two brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Ella Spraker Corvin of Wytheville; one daughter, Doris Prizznick of Bakersfield, Calif.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Preston and Nancy Corvin of Marion; Cecil and Becky Corvin of Ellabell, Ga., and Eddie and Lynne Corvin of Missouri City, Texas; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad.

Jerry Chitwood Fields

Jerry Chitwood Fields, 53, of Concord, formerly of Wytheville died Friday, April 4, 1997, in the Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 8, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Umberger and the Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Frazier and Alda Felty Fields, and was a power line construction superintendent with L.E. Myers Company.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Nuckols Fields of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Sidney Riley of Rustburg; two sons and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Laura Fields of Concord, and Darren Fields of the home; three grandchildren, Joshua Fields, Lauren Fields, and Nicole Riley; one sister, Mildred Williams of Wytheville; and two brothers, Hubert Fields, and Billy Fields, both of Wytheville.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Viola Hall Johnson

Viola Hall Johnson, 78, of Sugar Grove, died Sunday, April 6, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 9, at 11 a.m. at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles "Jody" Blevins and the Donald Medley officiating. Burial will follow in the Slemp cemetery. The body will be take to the church one hour before service time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy Johnson; a daughter, Peggy Ann Johnson; her father and mother, John Wesley and Alice Parks Hall; and two sisters, Okie Mae Keys, and Lettie Hall Johnson Moser.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Harvey Johnson, and James "Jim" and Gladys Atwell Johnson, all of Rural Retreat; three grandchildren, Teresa Graham of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Cindy Lane of Smyrna, Tenn., and Eric Johnson of Rural Retreat; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Rich of Sugar Grove, and Ethel Richardson of Bowie, Md.; and two brothers, John H. Hall of Sugar Grove, and Claude F. Hall of Saltville.

Pauline McMillan Roseberry

Pauline McMillan Roseberry, 76, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Max Meadows (the Gunton Park Community) died Saturday, April 5, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 10, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. W.S. Kidd officiating. Interment will follow in the Jones cemetery in Gunton Park.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Alvin W. and Pearl Marshall McMillan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie J. Roseberry.

Survivors include four daughters and two sons-in-law, Luella R. Warden of Max Meadows, Shirley R. Burgis of Norfolk, Elizabeth R. and Adrian LaPrarie of Deville, La., and Brenda R. and Lester Sprinkle of Virginia Beach; one sister and brother-in-law, Emma M. and Curtis Waterfield of Virginia Beach; and 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 10, from noon until service time.

Edna Mize Wright

Edna Mize Wright, 84, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Friday, April 4, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 6, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. C.D. Underwood and the Rev. Donald Keller. Interment was in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

She was a member of the Maranatha Church of God.

She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Mack Ogle of Max Meadows, Wanda and Tee Fritz of Tampa, Fla., Paige and Dickie Quessenberry of Dublin, and Jean and Fred Pugh of Roanoke; one sister, Ada Mize of Wytheville; step-children, Conley Wright, William R. Wright Jr., both of Wytheville, Faye Williams of Bristol, Nancy Hull of Canoga Park, Calif., Dolly Owen of Morristown, Tenn., and Patsy McKenna of Durham, N.C.; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, 19 step-grandchildren, and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Kate Dunagan Hight

Kate Dunagan Hight, 88, of Pulaski died Friday, April 4, 1997, in the Radford Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 6, at 2 p.m. in the Stevens Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Floyd Clyburn. Interment was in the Oakwood cemetery, Pulaski.

She was the daughter of the late Enoch Dunagan and Mary Ellen Fanning Dunagan.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Crockett Hight.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary H. Barlow of Barlow of Beaverdam; one son, Ralph C. Hight of Pulaski; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski was in charge of the arrangements.
