Harrison McTeer Archer Sr.

Harrison McTeer "Hass" Archer Sr., 96, of Route 2, Max Meadows, (Ft. Chiswell Community), died Sunday, March 2, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Randy Morris, and the Rev. Vaughan Earl Hartsell officiating. Interment followed in the Archer Family cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late James Isom and Nannie Eversole Archer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ferba Turman Archer; nine brothers, John Archer, Clint Archer, Malcolm Archer, Garland Archer, Guy Archer, Claude Archer, James Archer, Ray Archer, and Buford Archer; five sisters, Mary Neese, Ellen Mabe, Laura Archer, Frances Earl Archer, and Myrtle Archer.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Pauline Nichols of Wytheville, and Opal and Paul Jackson of Route 2, Max Meadows; three sons and daughters-in-law, John D. and Minnie Archer of Richmond, James Kelly and Martha Archer of Wilmington, Del., and H.M. Archer Jr. of the home; a sister, Mamie A. Hancock of Max Meadows; and 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 502, Austinville, Va. 24312.

Maude Elizabeth Bants Hoosier

Maude Elizabeth Bants Hoosier, 75, of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Mary McKinney. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Bluefield, W.Va.

She is survived by one sister, Della B. Grubb of Wytheville; a special niece, Shirley Hines of Wytheville; a special cousin, Fannie M. Braxton of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herschel James Huddle

Herschel James Huddle, 71, of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Feb. 28, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 3 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ed Schaack officiating. Interment will follow in the Kimberlin Lutheran Church cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He is survived by one brother, Charles Henry Huddle of Council Bluff, Iowa; a special friend, Lucille Huddle of Rural Retreat; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Roy Dean Nuckolls

Roy Dean Nuckolls, 58, of High Point, N.C., formerly of Wythe County, died Saturday, March 1, 1997, in the High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel Wytheville with the Pastor Lark Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late George and Bessie Akers Nuckolls.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie Akers Nuckolls of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Nuckolls and Rex Vestal of Thomasville; a son, Michael Nuckolls of High Point, N.C.; five brothers, Marco Nuckolls of Sylvatus, Glen Nuckolls of South Carolina, Elmo Nuckolls, Clifford Nuckolls, both of Virginia, and Delmar Nuckolls of South Carolina; and four grandchildren, Lance Austin Nuckolls, Joshua Vestal, Rebekah Vestal, and Rachel Vestal.

Carolyn Elizabeth Hudson Dunford

Carolyn Elizabeth Hudson "Toot" Dunford, 58, of Route 3, Max Meadows (Piney community), died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 7, at 2 p.m. in the Fort Chiswell Church of Christ, conducted by Jack King and Glann Lee. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late John H. and Goldie Wheeler Hudson. She was a member of the Fort Chiswell Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Dunford; a brother, James E. Hudson; and a sister, Margaret Ratcliff.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Ann and Terry Crawford of Route 3, Wytheville, Brenda Gail Dunford of Wytheville, and Judith C. "Judy" and William McKinney of Route 3, Wytheville; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Garl Smythers of Port Richie, Fla., Louise and Steve Lins of Sabillasville, Md., Frances Bass of Kenton, Ohio, Beulah and Howard Dunford of Johnson City, Tenn., and Becky and Harry Rogers of Max Meadows; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert O. "Bobby" and Callie Hudson of Wytheville, Ted S. and Phyllis Hudson of Christiansburg, Wayne and Bonnie Hudson of Max Meadows, and John H. Hudson Jr. of Max Meadows; four grandchildren, Thomas W. Crawford, Laura C. Smith, Jessica D. Collins, and D. Cameron Collins, all of Route 3, Wytheville; one great-granddaughter, Aliyah Christine Smith of Route 3, Wytheville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorsey Preston Widner

Dorsey Preston Widner, 67, of Route 5, Marion, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, in the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 7, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Sage officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Washington County, a son of the late Robert and Ellie Widner. He was a member of the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins, and was a retired auto mechanic with Meredith's Garage in Rural Retreat.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Blevins Widner of the home; four stepdaughters, Donna Blevins of Chantilly, Teresa Meek of Marion, Rhoda Thomas of Fort Chiswell, and Mary Nickolson of Wauchula, Fla.; four stepsons, Freddy Blevins, Johnny Blevins, Bobby Blevins, and Jimmy Blevins, all of Marion; three sisters, Liney Peake, Ella Kegley, and Fronie Reeves, all of Marion; two brothers, James "Jim" Widner of Rural Retreat, and Bobby Widner of Marion; and 17 step-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Louise Anna Williams Woods

Louse Anna Williams Woods, 96, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, in the Edgemont Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Leonard Davis and the Rev. Thomas Braxton officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Roxboro, N.C., the daughter of the late Louis and Sophia Wagstaff Williams.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hudie A. Woods; and two sons, Elery "Buddy" Woods, and Eslie Woods.

Survivors include a daughter, Frances W. Crockett of New York, N.Y.; two sons, George W. Woods of Bainbridge, Ga., and Robert "Mickey" Woods of Bronx, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Louise Dansler of Youngstown, Ohio, Wilma Dabney of Wytheville, and Vanessa Woods of Queens, N.Y.; eight great-grandchildren, Michelle Woods, Anthony Dabney, Kimeco Moss, Rodney Moss, Michael Woods, Damian Woods, Jennifer Moss, and Alonzo Good; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Quesenberry Burcham

Mary Elizabeth Quesenberry Burcham, 79, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 10, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. at the Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald E. Drake Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Andrew and Annie Sue Odell Quesenberry and was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Burcham Sr.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Mary Burcham of Wytheville; four grandchildren and spouses, Steve and Shari Burcham of Pulaski, Craig and Stacie Burcham of Japan, Elaine Burcham of Wytheville, and Mike and Carol Brendel of Catawba, N.C.; and eight great-grandchildren, Jill, Justine, Schuyler, John, Hannah, Samuel, Christina, and Michael.

Thomas Endel Lynn

Thomas Endel Lynn, 83, of Taylors, S.C., died March 6, 1997, at Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 9, at 4 p.m. at the Wood Mortuary, Greer, S.C., conducted by Dr. James Thompson and the Rev. Ron Galin. Burial was in Double Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Taylors, S.C., he was a son of the late Dolphus I. and Pearl Fowler Lynn, a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church and was a retired farmer. He attended Mars Hill College.

He is survived by his wife, Viette Davis Lynn of the home; two sons, Benjamin E. Lynn of Wytheville, and Terry B. Lynn of Anderson, S.C.; two daughters, Vivian L. Boling of Anderson, S.C., and Janis E. Lynn of Columbia, S.C.; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Children's Home, 425 Grayson Road, Wytheville, Va. 24382.

James Allen Repass

James Allen "Jimmy" Repass, 45, of Wytheville, died Friday, March 7, 1997, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, at 11 a.m. at the Maranatha Church of God with the Rev. C.D. Underwood and the Rev. James T. Boyd officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.

He was a magistrate with the Supreme Court of Virginia for the past 23 years and was a member of the Virginia Association of Magistrates, and of the Maranatha Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah C. Repass of the home; his parents, James G. and Thelma H. Repass of Wytheville; a sister, Virginia R. Mahaffey of Wytheville; paternal grandmother, Myrtle F. Repass of Wytheville; his mother-in-law, Lola A. Chapman of Wytheville; and a special niece, Erin E. Mahaffey of Wytheville.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Maranatha Church of God Building Fund, or to the Virginia Association of Magistrates Scholarship Fund, c/o Iris Tucker, Chief Magistrate, P.O. Box 814, Christiansburg, Va. 24073.

Alfred Ritchie Shumate

Rev. Alfred Ritchie Shumate, 95, of Wytheville died Sunday, March 9, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 15, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment will be Saturday, March 15, at 3:30 p.m. in the Thorn Rose cemetery in Staunton.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1901, in Augusta County and was educated at Roanoke College, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and Harvard Chaplain School. He served the following churches: Holy Trinity, Mt. Hermon, St. Mark in Middlebrook Parish; St. Mathew, St. Peter, St. Stephen in Tom's Brook Parish; Holy Trinity, Lebanon, Holy Advent, St. Luke in Wytheville. He served as chaplain in the Army Air Force with the 487th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force in England.

He was preceded in death by one sister, three brothers, including a twin brother, and one grandson.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Shumate; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Jim Tucker; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Elizabeth Shumate, and Robert and Mildred Shumate; a sister, Phyllis Cupp; and nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the parlor of Lutheran Hall at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 405 W. Main St., Wytheville, Va. 24382.

Etta Pauline "Pondy" Smelser, 78, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 10, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Bob Peterson and Rev. Gerald Etter. Interment will follow in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, C.E. "Dick" Smelser of Wytheville; a daughter, Odessa Quesenberry of Wytheville; three sons, Claudie Smelser of Cincinnati, Ohio, Riley Smelser of Boones Mill, and Terry Smelser of Wytheville; and six grandchildren, and three grandchildren.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Clyde Bascom Stanley

Clyde Bascom Stanley, 73, of Henderson, N.C., formerly of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 9, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. in the Cavalry Baptist Church in Henderson, N.C. with Dr. Russell Bell and the Rev. Jimmy Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Sunset Gardens.

He was born Jan. 15, 1924, a native of Dickenson County. He was a member of the Cavalry Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of with L.D. Swain Company of Durham and later was a self-employed home heating and cooling mechanic. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenova Stanley and Margaret Moore Stanley.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Shoemaker Stanley of the home; a son, Danny B. Stanley of Wytheville; two stepsons, Roy Victor Harris of Durham, N.C., and Norman Lee Harris of Creedmoor, N.C.; four daughters, Shirley S. Jennings of Galax, Rose Marie S. Seagle of Wytheville, Ginger Stanley Aiken of Hillsborough and Mariam R. Stanley of Henderson, N.C., two stepdaughters, Rebecca H. Dalton, and Rita L. Harris, both of Dublin; three sisters. Lydia S. Yates of Coeburn, Virginia S. Cline of Corrigan, Texas, and Nina S. Delaney of Clintwood; six brothers, Ira Stanley of Nora, Paul Stanley, Banner Stanley, both of Houston, Texas, Nueburn Stanley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cecil Stanley of Johnson City, Tenn., and Hughie Stanley of Houston, Texas; and 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
