Henry Clyde Fisher
Henry Clyde Fisher, 85, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Cripple Creek Community, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Davis cemetery.
He retired from New Jersey Zinc in 1974 with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles K. and Leora C. Fisher; and a son, Donald Jerry "Buddy" Fisher.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille H. Fisher of Wytheville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Willard Spraker, Sue and David Jones, and Nancy and James Scott, all of Wytheville; three sisters, Lettie Groseclose, Virgie Umberger, and Ollie Kincer, all of Wytheville; one brother, Robert "Bob" Fisher of Wytheville; and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, Calvary United Methodist Church or Bethel United Methodist Church.

Alice Maude Cook Friend
Alice Maude Cook Friend, 92, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Kenneth Fogus. Interment was in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
She was born on Jan. 23, 1905. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Stuart and Mary Emma Reynolds Cook; three brothers; five sisters; her husband, Gaylord Moffett Friend; a daughter, Ruby Friend Dean; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Stone Friend.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm R. and Margaret Friend of Max Meadows, Gaylord and Billie Friend of Dallas, N.C., Edwin Friend of Roanoke, and Hugh Brown Friend of Marion; three daughters and son-in-law, Evelyn F. and Nathaniel Alexander of Kent, Ohio, Jean F. Fortune of Pulaski, and Mary F. Mabe of Wytheville; 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

James Howard Hackler
James Howard Hackler, 84, of Suffolk, formerly of Speedwell, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, in a Suffolk Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Speedwell Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Richard Collins and Dr. Merle D. Correll. Interment was in the Comers Rock cemetery, Comers Rock. The Mt. Airy Lodge No. 226 conducted a Masonic Memorial service Monday, Feb. 10, at 8:30 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.
He was retired from Virginia Department of Transportation, and he started the Speedwell Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Speedwell Ruritan Club, and was a member of the Mt. Airy Masonic Lodge No. 226.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise H. Melton.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Marie Hackler of Suffolk; a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy A. and Stanley O. King of Suffolk; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby D. and Jean M. Hackler of High Point, N.C.; two sisters, Bonnie H. Hackler of Comers Rock, and Dove H. Carrico of Independence; and seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Dallas Edmond Pugh, 52, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1997, at his residence.
Memorial services were held Monday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.
He is survived by a daughter, Tracy Waddell of Nevada; two sons, David Pugh of Moncks Corner, S.C., and Dallas Pugh of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; five sisters, Loretta Umberger of Bristol, Nancy Hurst of Wytheville, Patsy Tolley of Rural Retreat, Faye Sawyers of Roanoke, and Marlene Warner of Hickory, N.C.; three brothers, C.J. Pugh, Randall Pugh, and Jimmy Pugh, all of Wytheville; and five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

J.D. Trail, 73, died Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.
Graveside services were held Sunday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m. at Roselawn cemetery with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating.
He was a native of Smyth County and had lived in Rural Retreat for several years. He had served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by one daughter, Sandra Musser of Rural Retreat; five sisters, Maggie Trail, Nannie Orr, Doris Murray, Helen Falke, all of Marion, and Bessie Orr of Chilhowie; and four grandchildren.

Margaret VanDyke, 75, of Winchester, Ky., died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997, at the Clark Regional Medical Center in Kentucky.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Scobee Funeral Home conducted by John Smith. Burial was in the Clarmont Memorial Gardens.
Born in Ritchie County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence James and Lona James. She was a homemaker and a member of the Winchester Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. VanDyke of Winchester, Ky.; a daughter, Judy Jesse of Louisville, Ky.; one son, Mike VanDyke of Walton, Ky.; nine grandchildren, Lori Droddy of Richmond, Ky., Michael Offutt of Florence, Ky.; Michelle Jesse, Jason Droddy, Rhonda Jesse, Sarah Droddy, Laura Jesse, Jimmy Jesse, all of Louisville, Ky., and Aaron VanDyke of Walton, Ky.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Alma Blanche Billips Gross
Alma Blanche Billips Gross, age 93, of Route 1, Bastian, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997, in Colfax, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Pine Grove Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Ashworth and the Rev. Ralph Kidd officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time. Interment will follow in the Gross Family cemetery.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Lovnenia Compton Billips and was a member of the Pine Grove Methodist Church. She graduated from Radford College, and was a school teacher in Bland County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Harvey Gross; two sisters, Nora B. Ramsey and Ethel Billips and a brother, Alonzo Billips.
She is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Donald Gross, Robert and Susie Gross, all of Bastian, William "Bill" and Toby Gross of Franklin, Eugene and Vickie Gross of Princeton, W.Va., Jimmy and Sarah Gross of Colfax, N.C.; two sisters; Bertha Billips Wiseman and Ruby Billips Yates; two brothers, Woodrow Billips and Gene Billips. Nineteen grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive.

Goldie Wheeler Hudson, age 88, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Jack King and the Rev. D. Ray Humphries. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
She was the widow of John H. Hudson, and was preceded in death by a son, James E. Hudson, and a daughter, Margaret Ratcliff.
She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Garl Smythers of Port Richie, Fla., Louise and Steve Lins of Sabillisville, Md., Frances Bass of Kenton, Ohio, Elizabeth "Toot" Dunford of Wytheville, Beulah and Howard Dunford of Johnson City, Tenn., and Becky and Harry Rogers of Max Meadows; four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert O. "Bobby" and Callie Hudson of Wytheville, Ted S. and Phyllis Hudson of Christiansburg, Wayne and Bonnie Hudson of Max Meadows, and John H. Hudson Jr. of Max Meadows; one sister, Nina W. Hesket of Springfield, Ohio, and a son-in-law, Moses Ratcliff, of Brandywine, Md. Twenty-seven grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Julia Sydney Huddle Davis, 59, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, in the Roanoke Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church and a member of the Wilderness Road Chapter, D.A.R. She was a former employee of the Wytheville Community College.
She was preceded in death by her father, Garnett Sidney Huddle.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda G. White of Max Meadows, Becky L. Grubb of Augusta, Ga., and Donna F. Davis of Wytheville; one son, Curtis G. Davis Jr. of Max Meadows; two granddaughters, Shannon M. White, and Peyton L. White; her mother, Julia S. Huddle of Wytheville; and two sisters, Gail H. Cooley of Vinton, and Diana H. Liller of Fredricksburg.

Margie Creger Irvin, 76, of Route 2, Rural Retreat, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Grubb Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Robert Layell. Interment was in the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Mae Robinson Creger.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Vivian and Bud Hagy of Rural Retreat, and Greeta and Jimmie Neese of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Larry Irvin of Oxbridge, Mass.; two sisters, June Cregger and Louise Cregger, both of Wytheville; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Nellie M. Sanders, 68, of Race Blvd., Marion, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Ben Blevins and Elder Larry Blevins officiating. Burial was in the Fairwood cemetery.
She was born June 23, 1928, in Grayson County, to the late Nathen Fields and Lessie Parks Anderson. She was a member of the Hopkins View Primitive Baptist Church in Thomas Bridge.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, James Anderson, Harry Anderson, Kenneth Anderson and Glenn Anderson; two sisters, Kate Stephenson, and Mary Lou Adams.
Survivors include her husband, Fielden O. Sanders Sr.; one son and daughter-in-law, Fielden O. Jr. and Susan Sanders of Rural Retreat; one daughter and son-in-law, Debra S. and Buford Overbay of Marion; two sisters, Maxine Bullins of Sugar Grove, and Ruth Weeks of South Carolina; three brothers, David V. Anderson, Stephen Anderson, both of Troutdale, and Charles Anderson of Groseclose; and four grandchildren, Sarah Sanders, Ashley Sanders, both of Rural Retreat, Randy Pafford and Jason Pafford, both of Marion.

Carl W. Scott Jr., 62, of Goochland, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1997.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Byrd Presbyterian Church in Goochland. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
He is a retired lieutenant from the Virginia Department of Corrections.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Scott, two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Glenda Scott, and Steve and Debbie Scott, all of Bland; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Amy Gordon, and Ricky and Geneva Gordon, all of Goochland; two sisters, Barbara Kidd of Richmond, and Carolyn Mustard of Mechanicsburg; three grandchildren, Todd, Amanda, and Stefany; and three step-grandchildren, Amber, Todd and Becky Simmons.
