Bessie Fisher Bowers

Bessie Fisher Bowers, 84, of Rural Retreat (The Cedar Springs Community), died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, in the Francis Marion Manor in Marion.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patricia Dover-Edwards and the Rev. E. Billingsley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County on Nov. 6, 1912, a daughter of the late Ellis and Mackie Sutherland Fisher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Quincy E. Bowers; and a brother, Dale Fisher.

Survivors include one son, Rodney Bowers of Rural Retreat; one sister, Maxine Humphreys of Rural Retreat; three brothers, Shaylor Fisher of Monterey, Tenn., Dr. James Fisher of Knoxville, Tenn., and Arleigh Steel Fisher of Wytheville; an aunt, Thelma Fisher Phillippi of Rural Retreat; and a friend and care giver, Dr. John W. Boettjer of Washington, D.C.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Asbury Untied Methodist Church cemetery Endowment Fund.

Robert Dix Kincer

Robert Dix "Bob" Kincer, 56, of Speedwell, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. in the United Lutheran Church conducted by Pastor Joe Shumate. Interment followed in the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was born in Crockett June 21, 1940. He was a member of United Lutheran Church for 55 years with 47 years of perfect attendance at Sunday school. He was one of the founders of the Lutheran Mountain Ministries Lay Liturgist Program, served on several church councils, as well as serving on the LMM board since it was founded in 1980. He was an active advisor for the United Lutheran youth group and was a Sunday School teacher for 30 years. He was a Speedwell resident since 1971.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Dix Kincer.

Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Charles E. "Chuck" Kincer, and Michael S. "Gus" and Georgia Ann Kincer, all of Speedwell; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice and James W. Brown of Rural Retreat, Wanda "Shortie" and Wade Hall of Crockett, Donna and William N. Lethco, and Norma "Hoppy" and Richard K. Linkous, all of Wytheville; and his father, Hubert "Jelly" Kincer of Wytheville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Speedwell Fire Department or to the United Lutheran Building fund.

The Grubb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Glenn Sanford Sisk

Glenn Sanford "Dude" Sisk, 68, of Northwinds apartments, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, at his residence.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Odd Fellows cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Barnes and the Rev. Ronald King officiating.

He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late Lark and Sallie Porter Sisk and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by a sister, Eunice Houston of Bassett; a brother, Junior Sisk of Baltimore, Md.; a dear friend, Helen Mitchell Kast of Wytheville; a special nephew, Wendell Jones of Austinville; and several other nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 19, from noon until service time at the Barnett Funeral Home, or at the residence of Helen Kast, Northwinds Apartments, Wytheville at any time.

Elta Funk Stone

Elta Funk Stone, 86, of Wytheville and formerly of Elk Creek died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, in the Edgemont Health Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Elk Creek conducted by the Rev. Rick Eminhizer and the Rev. Ginny Eminhizer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman C. Stone.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah and Bill Grubb of Wytheville, and Norma and Lewis Kirk of Elk Creek; one sister and brother-in-law, Bina and Morris Richardson of Port Orange, Fla.; one brother, Neal Funk of Edinburg; four grandchildren, Cindy Kincer of Wytheville, Lisa Cornett of Galax, Randy Kincer of Wytheville, and Jacki Kincer of Silver Springs, Md.; and one great-grandchild, Matthew Allen Cornett of Galax.

Friends may call Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 18, from 5:30 p.m. until service time at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

Donations may be made to the 1908 Courthouse Foundation, P.O. Box 336, Independence, Va. 24348, or to the Elk Creek Rescue Squad, c/o Deanna Jones, Elk Creek, Va. 24326.

Thomas Freeman

Thomas "Bear" Freeman, 41, of Emporia, died Friday, Jan. 17, 1997.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Owen Funeral Home led by Rev. Jim Kerr. Interment will be in Beechwood cemetery in Boykins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas L. Freeman Sr.

Survivors include his fiancée, Darlene B. Zelmer; his mother, Camille Freeman; and number of aunts and uncles.

Ella Mae Mitchell Halsey

Ella Mae Mitchell Halsey, 65, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Charles McMillen and the Rev. Chris Foglesong officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Floyd and Gladys Akers Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert S. Halsey; and her twin brother, John Lacy Mitchell.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby G. and Kim Halsey of Wytheville, and Robby S. and Michelle Halsey with U.S. Army, in Aberdeen, Md.; two sisters, Mary Farmer, and Helen Kast, both of Wytheville; six brothers, Donald Mitchell, Ronald Mitchell, Randolph Mitchell, Cecil Mitchell, Wayne Mitchell, and Floyd B. Mitchell Jr., all of Wytheville; and two grandchildren, Zachary Umberger and Devon Halsey.

Macie Ivalee Merritt Roberson

Macie Ivalee Merritt Roberson, 61, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Pastor Edward Schaack officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W.Va.

She was born in Tip Top, a daughter of the late Ernest E. and Bertha Carter Merritt.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Ann Merritt; and a son, Harold Dean Roberson.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Roberson of the home; a daughter and fiancé, Linda Lee Roberson and Jeff Akers of Max Meadows; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim "Streaker" and Evelyn Roberson of Wytheville, and Earnie and Virginia Roberson of Rural Retreat; a sister, Virginia Puckett of Disputana; a brother, John Merritt of Tazewell; and five grandchildren.

Al Lewis Woodruff

Al Lewis "Skip" Woodruff, 33, of Church Hill, Tenn., formerly of Emporia, died Friday, Jan. 17, 1997.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 3 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home. Interment will be in Emporia cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father, Al Lewis Woodruff Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Kiser; their children, Jessica Ann Woodruff, and John Dancey Woodruff; mother and step-father, Bettie Massey Grizzard and Terry Lynn Grizzard of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Wendy Woodruff Ward of Virginia Beach; a brother, Paul Dancey Woodruff of Virginia Beach; two stepbrothers, Michael Todd Grizzard of Courtland, and David Brian Grizzard of Orlando, Fla.; and a stepsister, Danielle Reneé Grizzard of Courtland.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a fund for the future of Woodruff's children, c/o Wendy Woodruff Ward, 517 Biltmore Dr., Virginia Beach, Virginia 23454.

Ancil Lee Cline

Ancil Lee Cline, 58, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Shupe and Pastor Edward Schaack officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda Shelton Cline; a daughter, Leigh Cline; his father, Garland A. Cline; and three brothers, Donald Robert Cline, James E. Cline and Stephen K. Cline.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Timothy Allen and Tammy Cline of Marion; two grandchildren, Timothy Allen Cline Jr., and Tamonthy Cline; his mother, Nelia Jane Cline of Wytheville; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Quentin Sutphin of Wytheville, Helen and Elmer Tickle of Max Meadows, Ethel and Tex Willard of Darlington, S.C., and Olivia "Libby" Caudle of Wytheville; six brothers and sisters-in-law, McKinley and Louella Cline of Crockett, Walter and Katherine Cline of Wytheville, William P. "Bill" and Linda Cline of Dublin, Martin L. and Georgia Cline of Wytheville, Randolph H. and Janie Cline of Marion, and Richard H. and Rebecca Cline of Rural Retreat; 24 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

Ruby Lee Thomas Cregger

Ruby Lee Thomas Cregger, 68, of Route 1, Draper, died Friday, January 24, 1997, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Jim Goddard officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

She was born Feb. 13, 1928 in Pulaski, a daughter of the late Luther Merlin Thomas and Gracie Ila Creasy Thomas. She attended the Draper United Methodist Church, Draper. She was a former employee of the Jefferson Mills, Pulaski, with 24 years of service.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, William Walter Cregger of Draper; one daughter, Muriel Marie Cregger of Draper; a son and daughter-in-law, William "Billy" Joseph Cregger and Dorothy Cregger of Draper; one grandson, William Travis Cregger of Pulaski; five sisters, Mrs. Maynard (Margaret) Allen of Tappahannock, Hiwatha Mae Goodman of Richmond, Colleen Harrell of Wytheville, Mrs. Edwin (Elnora) Carter of Doswell, and Bonnie Jean Meadows of Richmond; and one brother, Luther Merlin Thomas Jr. of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski, or anytime at the home located on State Road 766 (Draper Valley Golf Course Service Road), Draper.

Howard Shannon Crockett

Howard Shannon Crockett, 83, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Crocketts Chapel United Methodist Church in Cripple Creek with the Rev. Robert Countiss and the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment followed in the Crockett Family cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County (Cripple Creek), the son of the late James David and Ida Summers Johnson Crockett. He was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and was a retired employee of the Town of Rural Retreat for 31 years having served positions as a police officer and the maintenance department.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel Jane Gray Crockett of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Howard E. and Shirley P. Crockett of Rural Retreat; two grandchildren, Barbara Collins of Grahams Forge, and Tim Crockett of Rural Retreat; a great-grandson, Brian Timothy Crockett; one sister, Beulah Youngblood of Fries; and several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church.

Effie Carmel Parks

Effie Carmel Parks, 87, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Hall officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

She is survived by six sons, Marion Byrd Seabolt, Bobby Dean Parks, both of Rural Retreat, Ray Vernon Parks, Kenneth Eugene Parks, Ancil Terry Parks, all of Wytheville, and John Preston Seabolt of Marion; two sisters, Gussie Mills of Wytheville, and Dorothy Louise Keen of Max Meadows; three brothers, Chrisman Smith of Crockett, Ross Smith of Rural Retreat, and Charlie Smith of Fort Chiswell; a special friend, Fred Cline of Rural Retreat; and 13 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
