Mary Emma Viars "Granny B" Bishop, 86, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Bobby Alley, the Rev. Jerry Alley and the Rev. Dallas Jewell officiating. Interment will follow in the Sanders cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Peter Issac and Luretta Graveley Viars and was a charter member of the Flatwoods Church of God since 1951.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Jordan "Jerd" Bishop; and two sons, Luther Bishop and Berlin Bishop.
Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Cloyd "Snowball" and Isabell "Bell" Bishop, Clyde and Agnes Bishop, Richard "Dick Joe" and Sue Bishop, and James "Bug" and Nancy Bishop, all of Max Meadows; four daughters and sons-in-law, Vanda and Oakley Farris of Max Meadows, Hazel and Swanson Alley of Austinville, Lorraine and David Sayers of Max Meadows, Brenda Sue and Carlie Stuart of Wytheville; 14 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; a special niece, Ruby Hopkins; and three sisters-in-law.

David Paul Crockett, 63, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in the Veterans Hospital in Salem.
Funeral service will be Saturday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Tommy Johnson. Interment will be in the Mountain View cemetery in the Cove Section of Wythe County.
He was the son of the late Joseph P. and Ruby Smith Crockett, and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Lefler; and two brothers E.D. "Buddy" Crockett and Dallas Wayne Crockett.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Dan Johnston of Raleigh, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, David Allen and Lynn Crockett of Raleigh, N.C.; former wife, Lura Byrd of Wytheville; two sisters, Mary Brunk of Salem, and Ellen Sayers of Richmond; two grandchildren, Tripp Bridges, and David Johnston, both of Raleigh, N.C.; a special sister-in-law, Sarah Crockett of Raleigh, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Jimmy and Kay Sharitz.

Rosie Laurena Bass Gravley, 84, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. David Cox, the Rev. Aliene Akers and Ray Digh officiating. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Potts County, Pa., a daughter of the late Will and Susan Evelyn Burnett Bass and was a member of the Gravley Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Buford F. Gravley Sr.; two daughters, Sadie Jones, and Margaret Terry; two stepsons, Kenneth McCoy Gravley, and Eldridge Odell Gravley; three grandchildren, two brothers, and a sister.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Pearl and Junior Cox of Williamston, S.C., Linda and Ray Digh of Shelby, N.C., Evelyn and Edward Easter of Route 2, Austinville, and Barbara and Danny Burton of Shelby, N.C.; five sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Frankie Bass of Columbus, Ohio, Jack and Freda Gravley of Route 3, Max Meadows, Douglas and Jackie Gravley of Johnstown, Ohio, Buford Foster, Jr. and Thelma Gravley of Bland, and Daneel and Betty Gravley of Eureka, Nev.; 40 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mable Claudine Jones, 55, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in Maryland.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at the West End cemetery.

Alvin Homer "Tooney" Taylor, 72, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in the Roanoke Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Michael Hoyle. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville.
He was the son of the late John Earvey and Dolly Umberger Taylor.
He is survived by his wife, Allene Creger Taylor of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carlos and Pamela Taylor of Bristol, and Danny A. and Melinda W. Taylor of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Sheila Shutters, Kami Taylor, and John Taylor, all of Bristol; two great-grandchildren, Ashton Shutters, and Erikah Shutters, both of Bristol; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Hazel Taylor, Lottie Walters, and Mattie and Ralph Layne, all of Wytheville; two brothers, Robert "Bob" Taylor, and Norris Taylor, both of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Elmer Graham Williams, 90, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery.
He was born in Pulaski County, the son of the late John V. and Sallie P. Davis Williams. He served in the National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Earhart Williams.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Elinor Elizabeth Williams of Christiansburg, and Ola M. and Charles Stowers of Rural Retreat; two granddaughters and spouses, Margaret and Robert W. Crigger of Christiansburg, and Renee Stowers and Michael P. Shields of Rural Retreat; a great-granddaughter, Allison Crigger; and two sisters, Nellie Storms of Chestertown, Md., and Louise Callahan of Wytheville.

Phyllis Slade Brown, 70, of Bluefield, W.Va., died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in the Grayson Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Independence.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 7, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Mike Cunningham officiating.
She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Bluefield, W.Va., where she served as a deacon and member of the board of directors. She was a charter member of the Evening Primrose Garden Club in Bluefield, W.Va.; past president of the West Virginia Alliance for the Mentally Ill; founder of the Mercer County Alliance for the Mentally Ill; a member of the board of directors of the Southern Highlands Mental Health Center; and a past member of the board of directors of the Bluefield YWCA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Monroe Slade and Dorothy Albert Slade; a daughter, Teresa Brown Horton, formerly of Murfeesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Carlyle Slade; and her husband, James R. Bates.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia "Cindy" and Lindy Tabor of Wytheville; a son, Richard Brown of Huntington, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Julie Horton, Miki Horton and Jamie Horton, all of Murfeesboro, Tenn.

Millie Frye Poole, 62, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Piney Community, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
She was a daughter of the late Stephen and Virgie Dunford Frye.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. "Bill" Poole; and two sisters, Effie Lindamood and Beauty Groseclose; and a brother, Roy Frye.
Survivors include three daughters, Kay Poole, Robin Poole and Beth Ann Poole, all of Wytheville; one sister, Audrey Reynolds of Wytheville; two brothers, Thomas D. Frye and Stephen G. Frye, both of Wytheville; two grandchildren, Whitney Richardson and Jordan Richardson, both of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Teresa Sue Tweedy, 32, of Bastian, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in the St. Luke's Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Rick Methena officiating. Interment followed in the Morning Star cemetery in Bland.
She attended Hollybrook Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Anderson Tweedy Sr. of the home; a son, Charles Anderson Tweedy II of the home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Hayes of Tazewell; and her grandmother, Beulah Hayes of Tazewell.

Thelma Marie Crigger Ward, 73, of Rural Retreat, died early Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Rural Retreat Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Haskett and the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one prior to service time.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Eugene and Fannie Edmonds Crigger. She was a member of the Rural Retreat Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dale Ward; and a brother, Doug Crigger.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Hollybrook Church of Christ with Elder Terry Gordon, Elder Wayne Nelson and Brother Rick Mathena officiating. Burial was in the Shiloh cemetery, Hollybrook.
She was born Jan. 31, 1918, in Bland, a daughter of the late John Henry and Lena Mae Sarver Hart. She was a member of the Hollybrook Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Rudolph Conley; and a sister, Margaret Hart.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Henry Allen and Libby Conley, Dewey and Linda Conley, all of Bland, and James and Ginger Conley of Oak Hill, W.Va.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine and A.P. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Homer and Mable Drucilla Adams Jones; and an infant son, James Robert Bishop Jr.
Survivors include two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lorene and Edsel C. Davis, and Patricia Campbell, all of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Steve Adams of Baltimore, Md.; one nephew, David Mathew Davis of Baltimore, Md.; and three great-nieces.
