Walter Clayton Hudson

Walter Clayton Hudson, 69, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in Edgemont Center.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Lindamood, the Rev. Dr. Don Scott and the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery. The Wytheville Masonic Lodge #82, A.F.&A.M. conducted graveside Masonic rites.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Frank L. and Florence Hanks Hudson. He was a member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church where he served as trustee for many years. He was employed by Burlington Industries for 18 years and retired from Templon Spinning Mills with 17 years service. He was a member of Wytheville Masonic Lodge #82, A.F.&A.M., a member of Kazim Temple of Roanoke and the New River Shrine Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Garland L. Hudson.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Kitts Hudson of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Kaye and Jim Akers of Max Meadows; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Tom and Margie Hudson of Max Meadows, and Herley P. Hudson of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to the Max Meadows United Methodist Women's Organization, c/o Judy Swecker, Box 185, Max Meadows, VA 24360.

Berlin King

Berlin King, 68, of Ivanhoe, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, in the Veterans Hospital in Salem.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 2, at 1 p.m. at the Full Gospel Mission with the Rev. Hal Lewis, the Rev. Gary Cope and the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery. Grover King Post #1115 V.F.W. conducted graveside military rites.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late William Robert and Minnie Delby King. He was a member of the Full Gospel Mission, a member of the National Plott Hound Association and the second man to be inducted into the National Plott Hound Association Hall of Fame and wrote articles for the American Coon Hunters magazine. He was a U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Ann Truitt of Midlothian, Rowena Sue Aker of Wytheville and Alisa Kelly Romans of Ivanhoe; one son, William Robert Burris of Wytheville; six grandchildren, Christopher Blair, Erika Mercado, Lindsey Truitt, Nicholas Romans, Christin Burris and Syler Burris; six sisters, Agnes Eaton, Lois Rotenberry, Carolyn King, Shirley Budai, Yvonne Weeks, all of Manassas, and Geraldine Rose of Hartwood; two brothers, Auburn King of Goodview and Jessie Doyle of Warrenton; two aunts, Shirley Dunford and Nellie McRoberts, both of Ivanhoe; and two special friends, Bonnie Pearman and Dreama Kelly.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville was in charge of the arrangements.

Frank R. Mills

Frank R. Mills, 65, of Fraziers Bottom, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in the Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane, W.Va., after a long illness.

He was a 29 year resident of Fraziers Bottom, W.Va., a former general superintendent at Kenneth M. Dunn Company, Inc., with 30 years service, and was president of Vida Maze, Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and attended Winfield Church of God Mission.

He is survived by his wife, Rowena Lett Mills; a daughter, Melissa Dawn Mills of the home; a stepdaughter, Vicky Hedrick of Hobe Sound, Fla.; two stepsons, Teddy Paul Hedrick of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Robert E. Hedrick with the U.S. Navy in San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Willie Parrish of Vinton and Mary Youngblood of Umatilla, Fla.; four brothers, Harold Mills of Wytheville, Johnny Mills of Richmond, Millard Mills of Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Edgar Mills of Anthony, Fla.; and seven step-grandchildren.

Gatens Funeral Home in Poca, W.Va., was in charge of the arrangements.

Dennis James Stilwell

Dennis James Stilwell, 41, of Glenwood Park in Princeton, W.Va., died Monday, March 1, 1999, at his residence.

There will be no funeral services.

Born in Carroll County, Va., on Oct. 21, 1957, he was the son of Carlie Willard "Bill" Stilwell and Dorothy Maxine Carper Stilwell, both of Max Meadows. He was a self-employed truck driver and had been a resident of Princeton, W.Va. most of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Sneed Stilwell of Princeton, W.Va.; his parents, Carlie Willard "Bill" Stilwell and Dorothy Maxine Carper Stilwell, both of Max Meadows; two brothers, Carl Wayne Stilwell of Princeton, W.Va., and Bruce Edward Stilwell of Georgia; and one sister, Patricia Powell of Princeton, W.Va.

Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton, W.Va. was in charge of the arrangements.

Ella Virginia Killenger Webb

Ella Virginia Killenger Webb, 87, of Hampton, died Monday, March 1, 1999.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Norman G. Tippens officiating. Burial will follow in the Peninsula Memorial Park.

She was born Nov. 1, 1911, in Rural Retreat, a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Lucy Davis Killenger. She was active in the community and served as a volunteer and senior worker for Peninsula Contact. She was also active in many committees over the years of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Edward Webb Sr.; her son, Paul Edward Webb Jr.; and a grandson, Israel Avi Webb.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lee and Maureen Webb; four grandchildren, Jennifer Ella Webb and Christina Davis Webb, both of Hampton, Jennifer Lee and Paul Edward Webb III of Elmwood, Ill.; and two nieces, Lucy Hardy Johnson of Atlanta, Ga., and Joanne Hardy Thommasson of Bedford.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 3, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Organ Repair Fund, 151 Wythe Pwky., Hampton, VA 23661.

Nile Hicks Williams

Nile Hicks Williams, 80, of Ivanhoe, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Graveside services and interment were held Monday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at the Odd Fellows cemetery in Ivanhoe with the Rev. Donald White officiating.

He was born in Ivanhoe, a son of the late Millie H. and Myrtle Miller Williams and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Belle Richardson Williams.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and Cleve Sawyers of Woodlawn, Linda and Bobby Branscome and Phyllis and Larry Thacker, all of Max Meadows; a son and daughter-in-law, Meredith and Thelma Williams of Route 3, Wytheville; seven grandchildren, David Branscome, Missy Delby, Kenneth Combs, Curtis Williams, Cindy Tabor, Chris Turpin and Lori Parks; nine great-grandchildren, Jessie Turpin, Justin Turpin, Joshua Combs, Jordan Combs, Morgan Delby, Tabor Conner, Nikeole Williams, Natasha Williams and Tanner Williams; four sisters, Cecil Hartley of Waynesboro, Ethel Taylor, Doris King, both of Ivanhoe, and Shirl Baston of Lexington, S.C.; and two brothers, Bob Williams of South Carolina, and M.M. Williams of Max Meadows.

James D. Bass Sr.

James D. "Jim" Bass Sr., 67, of Lancaster, Ohio, formerly of Wythe County, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in Lancaster-Fairfield Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 24, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. David Cox. Interment was in the West End cemetery. The American Legion Post #9 conducted military graveside rites.

He was a retired automobile dealer and a U.S. Navy veteran of Korean war.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Buford and Rose Bass Gravley; two sisters, Margaret Terry and Sadie Jones; two brothers, Kenneth Gravley and Eldridge Gravley.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Hudson Bass of Columbus, Ohio; six daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie Davis of Columbus, Ohio, Cheryl and Jack Montoney of Groveport, Ohio, Brenda and Charles Longwell of Pickerington, Ohio, Annette and Peter Renaut of Pickerington, Ohio, and Melody and Jeff Monahan of Groveport, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, James Duane Jr. and Donna Bass of Newport, Ky.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Pearl and Junior Cox of Williamson, S.C., Linda and Ray Dye, Bobbie and Danny Burton, all of Shelby, N.C., and Evelyn and Edward Easter of Austinville; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Freddie Gravley of Max Meadows, Doug and Jackie Gravley of Johnstown, Ohio, B.F. and Thelma Gravley of Wytheville, and Denille and Betty Gravley of Nevada; 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Doris Lee Arnold

Doris Lee Arnold, 58, of Speedwell, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Cripple Creek.

She is survived by her husband, Charles M. Arnold of Speedwell; a daughter, Janet Redman of Wytheville; a son, Bobby Vaughan of Bluff City, Tenn.; three grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.

Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Freeman

Helen Freeman, 74, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A graveside service was held Sunday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. in Hickman cemetery, Pulaski County, with the Rev. John K. Boyd officiating.

She was born in McDowell County, W.Va., on June 24, 1924, a daughter of the late Shannon and Stella Freeman. She was a retired chemist with Henkel Inc. in Charlotte, N.C.

She is survived by several cousins and numerous friends.

Edith Mae Porter Rodriguez

Edith Mae Porter Rodriguez, 74, of Beltsville, Md., formerly of Austinville, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Grace Living Center in Norman, Okla.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Frank Mays and the Rev. William Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow in the Pickett cemetery in Carroll County.

She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Andrew and Mary McGee Porter. She was a member of Trinity Assembly of God Church in Lanham, Md.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Rodriguez; one sister, Hallie Alley; and two brothers, Marvin Porter and Merlin Porter.

Survivors include five children, Mary Ann Fagley of Newport News, James Rodriguez of Norman, Okla., Gerald Rodriguez of Union Bridge, Md., the Rev. William L. Rodriguez of Green, Ohio, and Judy Troffo of Stevensville, Md.; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Fagley, Shannon Fagley, Benjamin Rodriguez, Sarah Rodriguez, Jeremy Rodriguez, Jason Rodriguez, Michelle Rodriguez, Kristen Rodriguez, Dawn Rodriguez, and Angela Rodriguez; and eight sisters, Lollie Jennings of Galax, Hazel Tolbert of Pulaski, Doris Grayson of Lanham, Md., Ruth Doss of Worth, W.Va., Wilma Lambert of Pulaski, Irene Woolridge of Talbott, Tenn., Betty Rupe of Pulaski, and Maxine Dotson of Dublin.

Ocela Ann Grinnell Wolford

Ocela Ann Grinnell Wolford, 63, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Edward Richardson and the Rev. Jack Martin officiating. Interment will be in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Leithan O. and Annie Cline Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Freda Annette Wolford; and a sister, Melita Grinnell.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Vernon "Skip" Wolford of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Allen L. and D. Lynn Wolford of Wytheville, Arlis V. and Angela Wolford of Rural Retreat, and Aaron D. Wolford of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Eveleen G. and Julian Mowles of Salem; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leithan O. Jr. and Doris Grinnell of Salem, and Douglas L. and Betty Sue Grinnell of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Ann LaRhea Wolford, Allen L. "A.J." Wolford Jr., and Aubree Ocela Wolford; two stepgrandchildren, Amanda D. Hayes and Nathaniel A. Hayes; several nieces and nephews and her "special boys."

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Galilee Christian Church.

Elizabeth Ann Hubbard Brooks

Elizabeth Ann Hubbard Brooks, 50, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard and the Rev. John Markel officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.

She was an auditor with Data Bank U.S.A. and attended Wytheville Baptist Church where she was a member of the T.L.C. Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Palmer Hubbard.

Survivors include her husband, Claude C. Brooks Jr. of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Brooks and Mark Woods of Bristol; a son, Christopher Brooks of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Warren Painter of Tampa, Fla.; her mother, Elizabeth Hall of Bristol; and three stepsisters, Ellen Hall, Jenny Hall, both of Millerstown, Pa., and Margaret Lawyer of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 W. Ridge Rd., Wytheville, VA 24382.
