Clara Smith Turner
Clara Smith Turner, 85, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Wytheville Presbyterian Church with Dr. Michael Wingard and Dr. Tom Sproule officiating. Interment was in the West End cemetery.
She was a daughter of the late David S. and Bertha Suthers Smith. She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Edd" Turner; and granddaughter, Ruth Ann Turner Townley.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, William D. "Bill" and Sue Turner of Little Creek, Bland County, and Charles E. "Sonny" and Teresa Turner of Wytheville; four sisters, Mary Hilton, Phyllis Simmerman and Colleen Dunford, all of Wytheville, and Naomi Perrigan of Statesville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Chuck Turner of Tennessee, Todd Turner, David Turner and Dede T. Vanover, all of Little Creek, Bland County; a special friend and aunt, Ruby Suthers of Wytheville; and seven great-grandchildren.

James A. Waller
James A. "Pepsi" Waller, 74, of Wytheville died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 14, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Barry W. Losey officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military graveside rites.
He was a son of the late James M. Waller and the late Darrie Waller Hamblin and was the oldest active member of the Wytheville Fire Department where he served for 52 years. He was an employee of Wythe Fuel Service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Wytheville Post No. 9, Veterans of Foreign Wars Hillsville Post No. 1115.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Bridges Waller.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Mike Ogden of Pfafftown, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Cindy Waller of Concord, N.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Haskett and Shirley Waller of Wytheville, and Randolph and Juanita Waller of Columbus, Ohio; special friend, Irene Blankenship of Wytheville; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Jane Newton Fortune
Jane Newton Fortune of Alexandria died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in an Alexandria hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Clear Fork Baptist Church in Rocky Gap, with the Rev. Thomas Furrer officiating. Interment will follow in the Clear Fork Baptist cemetery.
Born in Pocahontas, she was a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Rufus T. Newton of Rocky Gap.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Walter B. "Tim" Fortune of Sarasota, Fla., and Henry N. "Hank" and Stephanie Fortune of Woodbridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Madeline Fortune and Timothy Blackwell of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Ruth Fisher of Christiansburg, and Ann Ayers of Axton; and four grandchildren and a spouse, Kimberley Blackwell and Michael Sheridan of Smyrna, Ga., Timothy H. Blackwell Jr. of Rock Hill, S.C., Caitline Fortune and Kelsey Fortune, both of Woodbridge.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. until service time at the Clear Fork Baptist Church.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Inova Alexandria Cancer Treatment Center, 4320 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22304.

Hallie Virginia Flanagan Hall, 93, of Crockett, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Owen Moore and the Rev. Bill Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the King's Grove United Methodist Church cemetery in Crockett.
She was born in Washington County, the daughter of the late Stephen L. and Julie Ada Gilman Flanagan. She was a member of the Springfield Church in Elk Creek.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Emmett Hall; and two sons, James Stephen Hall and Carl Conard Hall.
Survivors include three daughters, Willie Mae Haga Wolfe, Mary Hall Earwood, both of Crockett, and Eva Hall Hartman of Nashville, Tenn.; three sons, Emmett Lee "Sonny" Hall of Elliston, Worley Lawrence Hall of Salem, and Wade McKinley Hall of Crockett; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

James E. Bishop
James E. "Bevo" Bishop, 71, of Princeton, W.Va., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at the Princeton Community Hospital.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m. at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the Courthouse Road in Princeton, W.Va., with the Rev. Lyle Mullins and the Rev. Ken Hillings officiating.
Born June 3, 1927, in Princeton, W.Va., he was a son of the late William M. and Emma N. Cook Bishop. He was a graduate of Princeton High School Class of 1945 and was a member of the only undefeated football team in the history of the school. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He had formerly worked for the Bluefield Gas Company, Appalachian Power Company and had retired from Columbia Gas of West Virginia with many years of service. He was a member of the M.I.B.C. Sunday School Class on South 9th St., Princeton, W.Va., and an active member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Princeton, W.Va. He was serving on the board of firectors for the Princeton High School Sports Hall of Fame. He had served with the Tender Mercies Ministries in Princeton, W.Va. He had just returned from a mission trip the night before his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William M. and Emma N. Cook Bishop; a brother, Samuel D. Bishop; and a sister, Elizabeth Bishop Williams.
Survivors include three sisters, Loretta James of Princeton, W.Va., Irene Hampton of Cedartown, Ga., and Betty Bratton of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Bill Bishop of Scott Depot, W.Va.; a special friend and companion, Wilma Owens of Princeton, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

James Garnett Fielder, 77, of Cloride, Ariz., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999.
A graveside service was held Monday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Cloride cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian Byrd Fielder of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Irene Fielder of Cloride, Ariz.; two grandchildren and a spouse, Amy and Leonard Borts, and Kelly Fielder; one great-granddaughter, Katie Borts; one brother, Frank Fielder of Concord, N.C.; and several stepgrandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that those who prefer may make donations to the Asbury United Methodist Church cemetery Fund in Cedar Springs in memory of James Fielder.

Marie Geneva Dunford Jonas, 68, of Manassas Park, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m. at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, with Dr. Randy Orndorff officiating. Interment will be at Quantico National cemetery in Triangle.
She was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 7728 in Remington.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gerald "Gerry" Jonas; one daughter, Brenda Ann Thompson of Manassas Park; one son, Gerald "Jerry" Jonas Jr. of Manassas; her mother, Mattie G. Dunford of Wytheville; one sister, Peggy D. Sayers of Draper; two brothers, J. Clark Dunford of Max Meadows, and Perry Gerald Dunford of Wytheville; two grandsons, Jason Thompson of Manassas Park, and Ryan Thompson of the United States Marine Corps.

Lillian Williams Landreth, 91, of Zephyrhills, Fla. died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Heartland of Zephyrhills.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Chapel Hill gardens in Dade City, Fla.
She was born in Ivanhoe, a daughter of the late Sidney and Alice Williams. She moved to Zephyrhills, Fla., in 1976 from New York.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tenson Landreth; an infant sister; and two brothers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Dorothy Landreth of Zephyrhills, Fla.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Robert Johnson, and Ruth and Ivan Umberger, all of Wytheville; sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred (Pauline) Williams; one aunt, Hallie Williams of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Ruth Richards, 85, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in the Malin Health Care Center.
Graveside service was held Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. in the West End cemetery conducted by the Rev. Dennis Milligan.
She was a daughter of the late Fleman and Lucinda DeHart Riggins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Richards; a son, Elmer Richards; three brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include two sisters, Elsie Saferight of Pulaski, and Dinah Maggard of Church Hill, Tenn.; and six nieces and five nephews.

Margaret Williams Vanderlinde
Margaret Williams Vanderlinde, 80, of Hanover, N.H., died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, at home after a short illness.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.
She was born Dec. 30, 1918, in Max Meadows, a daughter of the late W. Carrington Williams and the late Harriet Allen Williams. She attended schools in Austinville and Wytheville. Following graduation from Duke University in 1939, she taught high school English and was assistant principal in a high school near her Virginia home. She was married
to Dr. Robert James Vanderlinde on June 12, 1943. In 1953, she moved to Hanover, N.H., where she was involved in many activities including volunteer work with the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and the Church of Christ at Dartmouth.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995.
Survivors include a son, Robert E. Vanderlinde of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Susan Vanderlinde Monaghan of Upper Montclair, N.J.; six grandchildren, Mary, Margaret, Sarah, Amy, Elizabeth and John; and cousins, including Arthur J. McGrane and his children of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Robert Gannaway of Atlanta, Ga.

Betty Jackson Ward, 96, of Roanoke, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999.
A private graveside service will be conducted at a later date.
She was born at Jacksons Ferry in Wythe County and spent most of her adult life in Arlington. She was the daughter of the late Hastwell and Bessie Jackson and was a graduate of Randolph Macon Women's College.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Carlos E. Ward.
Survivors include her brother, Thomas M. Jackson Sr. of Wythe County; two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret Ann Ward, and Carol and Robert A. Pruner, all of Roanoke; two grandsons, Todd Pruner and Scott Pruner; and one great-grandson, Byron Long.

Beulah Viers Davis, 79, of Route 1, Austinville, the Bethany Community, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at her home.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 1, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Lewis Pierce Jr. and Elder Jeff O'Dell officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.
She was born in Russell County, a daughter of the late Larkin Taylor Viers and Margaret Ray Viers. She was a member of the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Davis; and a son, Alvin Davis.
Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Sharlene and Elder Lewis Pierce Jr. of Austinville, and Patricia J. Davis of Galax; three grandchildren, Casey Davis, Lawrence Rice and Jason Rice; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith Deck of Port Richey, Fla., Kathleen Tiller, and Thelma Owens, both of Marion, Ohio; and one brother, Carson Viers of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
