John Samuel Umberger Sr.

John Samuel Umberger Sr., 90, of Austinville, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, in the Edgemont Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Bob Billingsley officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Dublin.

He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Stuart Alexander and Sarah A. Bralley Umberger and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Lead Mines Ruritan Club and was a retired payroll clerk from the New Jersey Zinc Company. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Courtney Umberger of Austinville; a son and daughter-in-law, John Samuel Jr. and Jeannette Umberger of Bland; two granddaughters, Deanna U. Collins of Max Meadows, and Courtney A. Umberger of Nashville, Tenn.; and a great-grandson, Lee Grayson Collins of Max Meadows.

Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Eva Mae Grimes Seagle

Eva Mae Grimes Seagle, 88, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Complete arrangements will be announced later.

Lugie Ring Bishop

Lugie Ring Bishop, 72, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Charles McMillen and the Rev. Edward Richardson. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Safewright Ring.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph L. Bishop, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Bobby Rogers of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Maggie Bishop, and Jerry and Joanie Bishop, both of Wytheville; a sister, Gladys Cannoy of Wytheville; two brothers, Clarence Ring of Wytheville, and Ray Ring of Rural Retreat; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers those who wish to do so may make memorial contributions to the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund.

Anna Hendricks Custer

Anna Hendricks Custer, 60, of Dayton, Ohio, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at her residence.

A graveside service was conducted Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m., at the Summerfield cemetery, Grayson County, with the Rev. Helen Shaw officiating.

She was born Feb. 17, 1938, in Indiana, to Francis Doyle and Josephine Hendricks.

She is survived by her husband, Deaton Custer of the home; her father, Francis Doyle Hendricks of Dayton, Ohio; a sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and Richard Zacharias of Belbrook, Ohio; a brother and sister-in-law, Denny and Barbara Hendricks of Dayton, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Amanda Strickland of Wytheville; a stepson, Jimmy Custer, who is serving with the U.S. Navy; a step-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence was in charge of the local arrangements.

Dorothy Ruth Greiner

Dorothy Ruth Greiner, 80, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Steven P. Ridenhour officiating. Private inurnment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.

She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of the late John and Cora Atkinson Thompson. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wytheville.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Greiner of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Kathy Greiner of Mechanicsburg, Pa., William and Debbie Greiner of Hixson, Tenn., and John Greiner of Catawba; one brother, Robert Thompson of Eden, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Nancy Greiner, Sarah Greiner, Susan Greiner, Mary Greiner, and Pamela Greiner.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for the ultimate benefit of Heifer Project International.

Richard Franklin Leonard

Richard Franklin Leonard, 56, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at his residence.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. in the Wasom cemetery, Marion.

He was a son of the late Franklin and Mary Henderlite Leonard.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Leonard, of the home; a daughter, Angela McBee of Salem; a son, Johnny Richard Leonard of Wytheville; a brother, David Leonard of North Carolina; and a grandchild, Matthew McBee of Salem.

Gene Wayne Reed

Gene Wayne Reed, 59, of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Toledo, Ohio, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998.

He was born in Wytheville and served 11 years in the Navy. He retired from the Chrysler Corporation.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Landon Blaine and Allie Reed; three brothers, Fitz, Fillmore, and Dallas; and two sisters, Deedy and Thelma.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; two children, Jesse and Reagan; a granddaughter, Lauren; and siblings, Jim, Dennis, Judy, Minnie, Alberta, and Jenny.

Simes Mortuaries Casa Grande Chapel in Casa Grande, Ariz., was in charge of the arrangements.

Julius Boyd Staley

Julius Boyd "Jake" Staley, 79, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Rhoden officiating. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. The American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military rites.

He was born in Welch, W.Va., a son of the late William Bryant Staley and Myrtle Jane Dollaye Staley. He was a member of the Wytheville Moose Lodge, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the military police.

He was preceded in death by a son, Malcolm Wade Staley.

Survivors include his wife, Georgia Brown Staley of the home; one daughter, Wilma Staley Rhoden of Oxford, N.C.; four sons, William Edward Staley of Arizona, George Russell Staley of Texas, Alan Wayne Staley of Georgia, and Mark Nelson Staley of Rural Retreat; one brother, Oscar L. Staley of Rural Retreat; six grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.

Garland Sanders Stephens

Garland Sanders Stephens, 94, of Wytheville, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery.

He was a son of the late Steven and Mary Pritchard Stephens.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Morehead Stephens; and a daughter, Mary Frances Schupbach.

Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Veneziano of Bensenville, Ill.; one sister, Ethel Brown of Wytheville; one brother, Frank Stephens of Wytheville; five grandchildren, Larry Veneziano, Linda Turney, Terry Gordan, Rebecca Schupbach and Christine Schupbach; and six great-grandchildren.

Mary Stuart Blevins

Mary Lee Stuart Jonas Blevins, 77, of Cripple Creek, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, at 2 p.m. at Barnett Funeral Chapel with Pastor Martti Saarinen and the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late George Martin and Jennie Belle King Stuart. She was a member of the United Lutheran Church, the choir and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a retired supervisor with Jafree Shirt Factory.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Jacob "Jake" Jonas.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar Harlow Blevins of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, David A. "Sonny" and Mary Jonas of Crockett; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Roy Delp of Elk Creek, Mary Frances and Roy G. Cox of Wytheville, Judy and J.R. Johnson, and Rachel and Terry Cox, all of Route 3, Wytheville, Rebecca and S. Wayne Grubb of Wytheville, Connie Shrader of Maryland and Donnie and James "Pud" Moore of Cripple Creek; one stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Daniel C. and Janie Blevins of Graham, N.C.; one stepdaughter, Nancy Blevins of Speedwell; four brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Edith Stuart, and Dewey Stuart, all of Fries, James "Buddy" Stuart of Fairfield, and Garnett and Mabel Stuart of Fries; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Luella and Arnold Copenhaver of Crockett, and Ruby Draughn of Roanoke; one half sister, Edna Jonas of Hillsville; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and five great-stepgrandchildren.

Raymond Gleaves Burris

Raymond Gleaves Burris, 89, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was born in Grayson County, a son of the late John and Pearlie Dell Brewer Burris. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Ellen Cornett Burris; a daughter, Locky May Burris; a son, Robert Burriss; and two brothers, Roy Burris and Marvin Burris.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Cedella and William Englar of Abingdon, Md., and Linda Carol Reardon of Rural Retreat; three sons and daughters-in-law, Oscar and Mary Ellen Burris of Virginia Beach, Donald and Betty L. Burris, Homer and Debbie Burris, and Jean Burris, all of Rural Retreat; one sister, Mable Flanagan of Rural Retreat; one stepsister, Mae Belle Thompson of Wytheville; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Emergency Services or to the Fairview cemetery Fund.

Carolyn Jean Dunford

Carolyn Jean Dunford, 50, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Roger Crigger and the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating. Interment was in the Olive Branch cemetery.

She was a member of the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church and was preceded in death by her father, Marion Marzell Hudson.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Ray Dunford of the home; her mother, Mable Poole Hudson of Route 3, Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and William T. Strahorn of Lothian, Md.; three aunts; several cousins; and many friends.

The family suggests those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church Building Fund.

Robert H. Goss

Robert H. "Bobby" Goss, 41, of Bland, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at his home following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with the Rev. Carl Robinson and the Rev. Ron Hutzle officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview cemetery at Bluefield.

He was born in Richlands and was a cemetery maintenance supervisor for Stewart Enterprises.

He is survived by three daughters, Jamie Renee Goss, Amie Sue Goss and Rebecca Leighann Goss, all of Bland; three sons, Jesse Lee Goss, John Robert Goss and Casey Alico Goss, all of Bland; his parents, Robert A. and Corriene Baldwin Goss of Bland; one sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia Dianne and Michael Harrison of Cedar Bluff; one niece, Jennifer Harrison of Cedar Bluff; one nephew, Christopher Harrison of Cedar Bluff; and one great-nephew, Zachary Hayes of Cedar Bluff.

Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff is in charge of arrangements.
