Dorothy Gypsia Phillips Powell

Dorothy Gypsia Phillips Powell, 81, of Iaeger, W.Va., died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at noon, at the Church of God at Harmon's Branch near Iaeger, W.Va., with Pastor John Green of Iaeger, and Pastor John Wilcoxon of Manassas officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va.

She was born Jan. 22, 1917, in Chattanooga, Tenn., daughter of the late William Q. and Frances C. Phillips of Memphis, Tenn. She is a member of the Church of God at Harmon's Branch near Iaeger. This is the congregation that she and her husband pastored for 43 years. Other places they ministered include Bessmer, Ala., Stewartville, Ala., San Antonio, Texas, and Delina, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Johnny; and a grandson, Harley Ray Davis.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, G.W. Powell; one son and daughter-in-law, William "Bill" and June Powell of Rocky Gap; two daughters and sons-in-law, Doris Frances and Stephen Green of Roderfield, W.Va., and Emily Dianne and William "Bill" Hale of Bland; seven grandchildren, Gregory Powell, Dennette Dixon, Bill Davis, Lynna Gore, Brian Davis, Beth Green and David Green; six great-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, W.Va. is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Cassell Taylor

Mary Cassell Taylor, 88, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Eddie Noe. Interment was in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late George W. and Minnie Gibson Cassell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Taylor.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lilliane and Roger Hall of Wytheville, and Helen and Gary Sessoms of Suffolk; a grandson, James Claude Sessoms of Suffolk; a godchild, Daniel Martin Jr. of Wytheville; three sisters, Zeph Miller, Neta Layne, both of Wytheville, and Stella Trout of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Everett Clarence Underwood

Everett Clarence Underwood, 79, of Ivanhoe, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with Jack King officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of late George Riley and Virginia Alma Akers Underwood, and was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Underwood, and Annie Weatherman; and two brothers, Alvin "Abb" and George Hyle Underwood.

Survivors includes his wife, Beatrice M. Underwood of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Danna "Teny" Underwood of Ivanhoe, Janice and Charles Freeman of Austinville, and Donna "Tiny" and Tony Mabe of Route 3, Max Meadows; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry "Bobby" and Brenda Underwood of Ivanhoe; four grandchildren and spouse, Jeff Freeman, Laura Freeman, Chad and Marsha Underwood, and Tonya Mabe; a great-grandchild, Everett Cole Underwood; a sister, Virginia "Dude" Sayers of Ivanhoe; and several special nieces and nephews.

Reese Funeral Home in Austinville is in charge of the arrangements.

Garland Smith Walters Sr.

Garland Smith "Gib" Walters Sr., 70, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Eddie Noe and the Rev. Ronnie Umberger. Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was the son of the late Guy and Bertie Walters.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Jane Callahan Walters of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Jimmy Tate of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Garland S. "Smitty" Jr. and Sherrl Walters of Wytheville; three granddaughters, Jana Walters, Christie Tate, and Kimberly Tate; one grandson, Jason Walters; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Woodrow (Atha) Hudson, Mrs. Edward (Billie) Umberger, and Mrs. Sonny (Della) Callahan, all of Wytheville; and an aunt, Mrs. Jim (Elsie) Ward of Rural Retreat.

Hattie Alma Armentrout

Hattie Alma Armentrout, 90, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, in the Greystone Nursing Center in Blountville, Tenn.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at the East End cemetery in Wytheville.

She was born in Hillsville, a daughter of the late Wise and Florence Ella Kemp Shockley, and was a member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church for 63 years. She was a member the Ladies Aid Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter James Armentrout; and four sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Greta and Paul Nester of Charleston, S.C., and Jane and Don Boothe of Bluff City, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Timothy Nester, Barry Nester, David Nester, Sherree Davis, Gayle Caldwell, Jill Arnold and Donnie Boothe; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Melda Alexander of Roanoke, Velva Sutphin of Johnson City, Tenn., Golda Arcarco of Cornith, N.Y., and Dixie Howard of Roanoke; three brothers, Ohlen Shockley of Sylvatus, Giles Shockley of Starky, and Silas Shockley of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Max Meadows United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Walter Lilbern Catron

Walter Lilbern "Walt" Catron, 70, of Route 2, Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Meadows and the Rev. Abe Handy officiating. Entombment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Charles Henry and Laura Grubb Catron. He was retired from the Aeroquip Corp. in Wytheville.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Henry Catron Jr., and Robert "Bob" Catron; and three sisters, Anna Belle Norman, Elsie Alicknovic, and Willie Kincer.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Eunice K. Catron of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry L. and Mia Z. Catron of Route 2, Rural Retreat; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Pete Sisk of Route 1, Max Meadows, and Teresa and Tim Farmer of Route 2, Rural Retreat; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and George Suchorsky, and Martha and Charles Kolaetis, all of Clark, N.J.; five grandchildren, Cory Catron, Micah Catron, Breanna Farmer, Matthew Farmer, and Krysta Sisk; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

Elmer Joseph Hodges

Elmer Joseph "Jack" Hodges, 78, of Hurt, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at his residence.

A memorial graveside service was conducted Sunday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. at Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. R.G. Rowland officiating.

Born Aug. 13, 1920, in Franklin County, he was a son of the late Joseph Edward Hodges and Nora Virginia Williams Hodges. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a retired superintendent with the Lane Co.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Dennis S. Hodges and Jackie S. Hodges; a granddaughter, Casey Elizabeth Hodges; a sister, Olliemae Plyer; two brothers, Joseph Hodges and Newton Hodges.

Survivors include his wife, Pattie Shelton Hodges of the residence; three sons, Stanley Hodges of Wytheville, Carey Hodges of Hickory, N.C., and Joe Hodges of Bassett; a daughter, Nancy Lambert of Hartsville, S.C.; a brother, Buford Hodges of Roanoke; five sisters, Easter Haynes of Rocky Mount, June Crook of Moneta, Shirley Law of Rocky Mount, Nell Mitchell of Montgomery, Ala., and Beatrice Duncan of Columbus, Ga.; 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, One St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Mildred Lyon Kegley

Mildred Lyon Kegley, 86, of Galax, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, in the Twin County Regional Hospital.

Graveside service was held Monday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. in the Middlesboro cemetery, Middlesboro, Ky.

She was the daughter of the late Robert Lyon and Catherine Lyon Price.

She is survived by a son, James Howard Kegley Jr. of Elk Creek; a sister and brother-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Sam B. Rose Jr. of Winchester; a brother and sister-in-law, Felix and Judy Lyon of Wytheville; a granddaughter, Kendall Heath Kegley McQueen of Nashville, Tenn.; a grandson, James H. Kegley III of Galax; great-grandchildren, James B.J. Kegley and Katherine S. Kegley; and a niece, Bobby Joe Wilson Jennings of Max Meadows.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

John Dyer King

John Dyer King, 61, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Porters Crossroads Community, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in the Radford Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. R. Glennard Quesenberry officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

He was born in Ivanhoe, the son of the late Robert Dyer King and Cecil Sayers Davis and attended Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a member of the IVA Lodge No. 173 Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jaime Butler.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda King of the home; three daughters, Ann Sisson of Ashland, Ky., Meg King of Wytheville, and Denise Ratliff of Radford; two sons, John K. King and Kevin Butler, both of Route 3, Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Thomas Jones of Route 3, Wytheville; and two grandchildren, Laura Sisson of Rocky Gap and Tyler Walke of Wytheville.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home and from 6 to 9 p.m. at Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, or at the residence at anytime.

Lou Ella Martin Patton

Lou Ella Martin Patton, 98, of Narrows, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, in the Giles Memorial ICF Facility in Pearisburg.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Minister Ted V. Nichols officiating. Burial followed in the Ferrell cemetery on Wolf Creek.

She was born in Grayson County on Sept. 8, 1900, and was a daughter of the late Conley and Melinda Phipps Martin. She was a member of Witness of Jehovah for over 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Hobert Patton; 10 children, a sister, and three brothers.

Survivors include a son, Daniel B. Patton of White Marsh, Md.; four daughters, Bonnie Willa Wingate of Moravian Falls, N.C., Ella Wood of Burnsville, N.C., Reba Warner of Narrows, and Betty Crigger of Pearisburg; two sisters, Ada Roberts of Speedwell, and Wava Jenkins of Fla Ridge; 42 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

Riffe's Funeral Services in Narrows was in charge of the arrangements.

Roy David Clemons

Roy David Clemons, 68, of Rocky Gap, died Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with Clergymen Charles R. Bowling and John Belcher officiating. Interment will follow in the Red Oak Church cemetery.

He was born in Bland County, the son of the late Samuel and Ida Bane Clemons and was a member of the Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Nunn Clemons of the home; a niece, Aubrey C. Hounshell of Bland; and three nephews, Sammy Clemons and Gerald Clemons, both of Bland, and Roger Clemons of Rocky Gap.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland or at the residence of Randolph Bowling in Rocky Gap.

Connie Sue Dunford Gunter

Connie Sue Dunford Gunter, 55, of Fries, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, in the Twin County Regional Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Fries Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. William Linkous officiating. Interment followed in the Fries cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County on Dec. 1, 1943, a daughter of Edward G. Dunford and Hattie King Dunford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Wayne Gunter.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Bobby Jean and Sidney Stroupe of Wytheville; three sisters-in-law, Kasena Sutherland of Fries, Teresa Burnett of Galax, and Priscilla Lambeth of Thomasville, N.C.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Dillard and JoAnn Gunter of Fries; and several nieces and nephews.
