James Henry McFarlane
James Henry McFarlane, 74, of Rural Retreat, the Cedar Springs Community, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 23, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Haskett and Tom Darr officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Alma Cornelia McFarlane, and one brother, Ernest Franklin McFarlane.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel June Stowers McFarlane of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Bob Atwell of Rural Retreat; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Doris McFarlane of Rural Retreat; three grandchildren, Stephanie Martina Atwell, Amber Michelle McFarlane, and Chard Steven McFarlane; one brother, Clarence Phillip McFarlane of Elkton, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Ethel Bell Jackson Pack, 85, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, in Edgemont Center in Wytheville.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Interment will follow in the Jackson Family cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Preston Hayes Jackson and Mamie Kane Jackson. She was a member of the Ft. Chiswell United Methodist Church and a former employee of the Jafree Shirt Factory.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Randolph Pack.
Survivors include three nephews, one niece and spouses, Randolph "Jim" and Mavis Sage of Max Meadows, Malcolm and Trish Jackson of Wytheville, Phyllis Pickett of Max Meadows, and Sherman Jackson of Wytheville; numerous other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

John Henry Thompson
John Henry "Jack" Thompson, 74, of Pearisburg, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at the Kegley Manor Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 18, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Redman and Pastor Donald White officiating. Interment followed in the Stinson cemetery.
He was born in Giles County, a son of the late Andrew and Minnie Morehead Thompson and was a retired rural mail carrier. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Chewning; and three brothers, George Thompson, Garland Thompson, and Lacy Thompson.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacqueline Hannon of Mooresville, N.C.; one grandchild and spouse, John and Ofelia Hannon of Mooresville, N.C.; one great-grandchild, Eric Thompson Hannon of Mooresville, N.C.; and a sister Grace Stingley of Roanoke.

Walter Lee Viars
Walter Lee Viars, 78, of Max Meadows, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 23, 1999, at 2 p.m. at the Max Meadows Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. N.R. Taylor, the Rev. Dallas Jewell and the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was born in Wythe County a son of the late William Joseph and Ella Tate Viars and was a member of the Max Meadows Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 9 and the Max Meadows Community Improvement League, and he retired in 1983 from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant with 33 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Graveside military rites were conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl S. Viars; and one son, Ralph Viars.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and Louie Wolfe of Max Meadows, Dianne and Dennis Bralley of Route 2, Wytheville, Kathy Etter of Max Meadows, and Jimmy Etter of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Rita E. Viars, and Carson "Boy" and Dolly Viars, all of Max Meadows; three sisters, Audrey "Sis" White of Pulaski, Pauline "Polly" Doss, and Emily Jones, both of Max Meadows; three brothers, Robert "Jim" Viars, William Viars, and J.W. Viars, all of Max Meadows; nine grandchildren, one great-grandson, two step-granddaughters, four step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Charles Kelly Blankenship
Charles Kelly Blankenship, 87, of Bland, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Blankenship's home in the Cracker's Neck community of Bland.
He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Charlie and Minnie Tickle Blankenship.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Pauley Blankenship; a sister, Sadie Moody; and two brothers, Jack Blankenship and Luther Blankenship.
Survivors include a stepson and his wife, Earnest and Clara Pauley of Powhatan; three sisters, Genetta Hamblin of Roanoke, Ruby Opal Chandler and Marie Edwards, both of Bland; and four stepgrandchildren.

John P. Tebeau
John Peter Tebeau, 80, of Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, in the Bristol Tennessee Regional Medical Center.
A private inurnment service was held.
He was born Sept. 15, 1918, in Providence, R.I., a son of the late Rose Mulvey and Peter Tebeau. He was a resident of the Washington, D.C. area for 52 years and lived in Bristol, Tenn., for the last year. He was a graduate of George Washington University Law School in 1951 and was a member of the American Bar Association. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1946. He worked for the Federal Government for 35 years as an attorney for the U.S. Customs Service, serving as Director of the Carriers, Drawbacks & Bonds Division. After retiring from the federal government, he worked in private practice in Georgetown. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Bristol.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Isabel "Tish" Tebeau; and two brothers, Joseph Tebeau and Phillip Tebeau.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Gladys Kardynal Tebeau of Bristol, Tenn.; one daughter, Joan Tebeau Gregory of Bristol, Tenn.; three sons, Peter A. Tebeau of North Stonington, Conn., Gregory J. Tebeau and John J. Tebeau, both of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister, Gertrude Prew of Foster, R.I.; eight grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

Tom Kirk of Bristol, Tenn., formerly of Bland, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at the Bristol Wellmont Hospice.
Graveside services will be held Friday, Sept. 24, at 11 a.m. at Mountain View cemetery.
He was born in Chicago, Ill. in 1926, a son of James Joseph and Ida Jensen Kirk. For over 50 years, he was instrumental in establishing a number of mission ministries throughout the country to help those in need. He was an employee of King Pharmaceuticals Benevolent Fund. He was a member of the Bethel View Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, PFC Joseph Kirk Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Kirk of Bristol, Tenn.; two sons, Todd Kirk, and Joel Kirk, both of Bristol, Tenn.

George Lewis Walls, 89, of Austinville, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dale Akers officiating. Interment will follow in the Sanders cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late William and Jane Walls.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cliffe Jane Walls; and a daughter, Malinda Jane Tickle.
Survivors include one daughter, Violet Ann Surratt of Pulaski; two sons, Jesse Walls of Pulaski, and Charles "Peanut" Walls of Christiansburg; one sister, Mary DeHart of Richmond; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Katherine Kelley Brockman, 28, of Marion, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in Wytheville from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Marion. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.
She was a native of Marion, a graduate of Marion Senior High School and Emory & Henry College. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a volunteer for the Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Smyth County where she served as a "Big Sister" since 1993.
She is survived by her mother, Linda Huber of Marion; her father, Preston Brockman of Marion; one sister, Anne Preston Brockman of Blacksburg; her grandmother, Ruby Katherine Sheets of Bristol; one uncle, Ken Brockman of Knoxville, Tenn.; one aunt and uncle, Kathy and Bobby Cumbow of Bristol; three cousins, Matthew Cumbow, Sarah Cumbow, and Drew Cumbow; stepmother, Ann Whitmore of Marion; stepfather, Bill Huber of Marion; four stepsisters, Katie Huber, Erin Huber, Betsy Taylor and Mary Ellen Marcus; three stepbrothers, Ivan Huber, George Edwin Gallian, and Richard Scott Gallian; and a special "Little Sister, " Lori Goodman.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Frank McCall and Mattie May Pannell Copenhaver. He was a retired employee of Polymer Inc. in Wytheville.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Sharpe Copenhaver of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Steven C. Copenhaver of Crockett, and Tracy S. and Missy H. Copenhaver of Cripple Creek; one daughter and fiancé, Diana L. Garland L. Hudson, 72, of Wytheville, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Frank L. and Florence Hanks Hudson. He was a graduate of Max Meadows High School and the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was an employee at Barnett Funeral Home for over 30 years. He was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church; Gideons International; Wytheville Masonic Lodge 82, A.F.&A.M.; Kazim Temple of Roanoke; and the New River Shrine Club. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was member of the American Legion Post 9.
He is survived by his wife, Herley Poole Hudson of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Ray Luckenbaugh of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; one son, G. Michael Hudson of Manassas; two granddaughters, Julie Kahlbaugh of York, Pa., and Jamie Raffensberger of Manheim, Pa.; one grandson, Chad Luckenbaugh; two great-grandsons, Brandon Raffensberger and Joshua Raffensberger; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Margie Hudson, and Walter and Frances Hudson, all of Max Meadows.
