Ethel Bourne Sumner
Ethel Bourne Sumner, 85, of Wytheville died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Kahle Sumner; a sister, Elizabeth Bourne Brown; and a brother, Henry G. Bourne.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Frances and Harold L. Beamer of Oakridge of Oregon; three grandsons, Mark Stuart Beamer of Dallas, Texas, Harold Lee Beamer of Albany, Ore., and Benjamin Sumner Beamer of Oakridge, Ore.; three great-grandchildren, Jonathan Kahle Beamer, Alyssa Ann Beamer, and Nathaniel Stuart Beamer; two sisters, Dorothy Bourne Lacy, and Scottie Bourne Kegley, both of Wytheville; and a brother, Benjamin M. Bourne Jr. of Wytheville.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Wytheville Presbyterian Church Building Fund.

Charles Edward Barnitz Tothill
Charles Edward Barnitz Tothill, 62, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Portland with Dr. James Doty officiating. Burial followed at San Patricio Memorial Gardens.
He was born Jan. 19, 1926, in Wytheville, to Richard F.K. and Frances Tothill. He graduated from high school in Old Greenich, Conn. During World War II he served in the Navy in the V-12 program at UNC at Chapel Hill, N.C. He graduated from the University School of Mines in Rolla, Mo. He worked as a petroleum engineer with Texaco, Murphy Corporation (Arkansas), Coastal States and as vice president of Tejas. He later formed Portland Energy, where he worked until he was forced to retire for health reasons. As a resident of Portland, he served on the Portland City Council and as mayor for three terms. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Portland where he had served as an elder.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Martha Preston Tothill; his son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Trish Tothill of Sun River, Mont.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Rock Woody, Jane and Lee Granberry, all of Portland, Texas, and Ann and Jim Nelson of Crosby, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Marleen Tothill of Midland, Texas, and Hugh and Shirley Tothill of Salem; and 13 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Portland, or to a charity of your choice.

Linda Rouse Rambo
Linda Rouse Rambo, 57, died Monday, June 14, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at the Middle Fork Baptist Church in Chilhowie with the Rev. Jerry Creasy and the Rev. Neal Hawks officiating. Burial will follow in the Middle Fork cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

William Thomas Umberger
William Thomas "Bill Tom" Umberger, 67, of Wytheville, died Monday, June 14, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. Interment will be held Friday, June 18, at 11 a.m. in the Davis cemetery.
He was born in Cripple Creek, a son of the late Thomas Jackson and Dorothy Kathleen Davis Umberger. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Joyce Pickett.
Survivors include a special friend, Beulah Flanagan of the home; two daughters, Barbara Leggett of Wytheville, and Kathleen Billings of Petaluma, Calif.; a son, Thomas Wayne Umberger of Wilson, N.C.; three sisters, Nancy Jones of Maryland, Judy Jones of Austinville, and Carol Harris of Florida; a brother, Tim J. Umberger of Smith Mountain Lake; an aunt, Vergie Umberger of Wytheville; and four grandchildren.

Luease Fleenor Worley, 74, of Abingdon, died Monday, June 7, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 8, at 9:15 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a member of the Clear Branch Baptist Church. She was the widow of Sanford S. Worley.
She is survived by her mother, Laura Bell Fleenor of Bristol; two daughters, Frances Wright of Wytheville and Judy Mason of Bristol; two sons, Bub Worley and Steve Worley, both of Abingdon; one sister, Lola Worley of Bristol; three brothers, Jack Herbert Fleenor of Blountville, Tenn., Ray Francis Fleenor of Bristol, and John Lee Fleenor of North Carolina; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two special friends, Patsy Owens and Norma Gobble.

Booker Barskile Jr., 92, of Rocky Gap, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, in the St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21, at 1 p.m. at the Tynes Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Rocky Gap with the Rev. A.H. Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in the Hogans cemetery.
He was born in Bluefield, W.Va., a son of the late Booker Sr. and Mary Price Barskile.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Brizzillia Ferguson Barskile; two brothers, Nathaniel and Charles Barskile; three sisters, Maggie Saunders, Augusta Stone, Alberta Barskile; and one grandson, Walter Little.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Little of Rocky Gap, and Maggie Barskile of Bluefield; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Wayne and Annette Johnson Barskile of Garner, N.C., and the Rev. Booker Barskile III of Detroit, Mich.; and one sister, Ophelia Payne of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Gladys Blessing Burress, 86, of Wytheville, died Monday, July 19, 1999, in the Evansham Manor Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 22, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Mike Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late William Robert and Mary Adams Blessing. She was a life long member of the Petunia Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude E. Burress.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Burress Shuler of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, William R. and Evelyn Burress, and Richard W. and Phyllis Burress, all of Wytheville; two sisters, Ruth Blessing Layne of Wytheville, and Daisy Blessing Rickey of Kernersville, N.C.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles J. "C.J." Dillon, 75, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Monday, July 19, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 24, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted by Pastor Steven Ridenhour. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
He retired from the U.S. Air Force with over 22 years of service. He was a son of the late Carl E. Sr. and Janie Tarter Dillon.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christine Jo Felesky; and a brother, Carl E. "Ed" Dillon.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Miller Dillon of Max Meadows; two daughters, Sharon Dillon, and Janie Dillon, both of Max Meadows; one brother, Herman T. Dillon of Wytheville; one sister-in-law, Bonnie E. Dillon of Wytheville; two grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

Edgar Lee Grubb Sr., 77, of Wytheville, died Sunday, July 18, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 22, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Bob Billingsley. Interment will be in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.
He was born Dec. 1, 1921, the youngest child of the late John R. Sr. and Lillie Lindamood Grubb. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl Grubb, Kenny Grubb, Robert Grubb, and Ernest Grubb; three sisters, Cleta Grubb, Maude Grubb and Rebecca Shockley.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Jane Martin Grubb of Wytheville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Edgar Lee Grubb Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, Stuart Wayne and Becky Grubb, Roger Dean Grubb and Wendy Gilmer-Grubb, and Gary and Alice Grubb, all of Wytheville; daughter and son-in-law, Doris Ann and Leonard Wayne Pugh of Wytheville; grandchildren, Kevin Grubb, Carl Grubb, Tracy Grubb, Jamie Grubb, Katelyn Grubb, Franklin Pugh, and Robert Pugh; three great-grandchildren, Sara Pugh, Dylan Pugh, and April Pugh; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul Ray Helms, 71, of Route 1, Max Meadows, the Ashley Oaks Community, died Saturday, July 17, 1999, in the New River Medical Center in Radford.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 21, at 1 p.m. at the Fort Chiswell Church of Christ with Glann Lee officiating. Graveside service and interment will be held in Gas City, Ind.
He was born in Garden City, Ala., the son of the late Tavis and Pearlie Aldridge Helms. He was a member of the Fort Chiswell Church of Christ and a retired employee of General Motors with 40 years of service.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jason Helms; and two sisters, Pauline and Dolly.
Survivors include his wife, Annette Helms; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Larry Logan of Jonesboro, Ind.; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, April and Randy Brough of Greentown, Ind.; three stepsons and a stepdaughter-in-law, Ancher C. Swartz of Lafayette, Ind., Joe L. Peed of Kokomo, Ind., and Ronald and Lolita Swartz of Max Meadows; nine grandchildren, Jason Logan, Stacy Helms, Cory Helms, Kylie Lee, Jordan Lee, Tiffany Cox, Michael Peed, Andrew Brough, and Eric Brough; one great-grandchild, Seven Peed; three sisters, Dicie Brooks of New York, Dorothy Helms of Cullum, Ala., and Bernice Britt of Tampa, Fla.; and a mother-in-law, Louise Paul of Kokomo, Ind.

Linnie Della Kidd Looney
Linnie Della Kidd Looney, 90, of Bastian, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at a Tazewell hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. James Witten and the Rev. Ronald Hager officiating. Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens at Bluefield.
Born April 13, 1909, in Bland County, she was a daughter of the late Henley and Virginia Yost Kidd. She was a lifelong resident of the Grapefield community and a homemaker. She was the last surviving charter member of the Grapefield Church of God, where she served as clerk and Sunday school teacher and she faithfully attended as her health permitted.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Looney in 1990 and by two sisters and six brothers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Irvin and Wacuba Looney of London, Ky.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bessie and Carter Hedgecock Jr. of Lynchburg, and Barbara and Earl Stinson of Fairfax; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thurman Kidd of Bastian, Herman Kidd of Baltimore, Md., and Ralph Kidd of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; a host of nieces, nephew, other relative and friends; and two special friends, James and Kathy Kidd.
