Maude Spraker Garland, 68, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 5, at 3 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Pastor Amy Oehlschlaeger. Entombment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
She was the widow of George K. Garland.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth G. and James Hurst, and Rebecca G. and Rickie Akers, all of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, George V. and Peggy Garland of Vinton; her mother, Minnie S. Scott of Wytheville; sister, Katherine Wholford of Crockett; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Inez Spraker of Cleveland, Tenn.; three grandsons, Jesse Crockett Hurst III, Larry Wayne Garland and Jerry Rush; and three granddaughters, Christina Marie Akers, Lucianda Rush and Manda Queen.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 5, from 2 p.m. until service time at the Grubb Funeral Home, or at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and James Hurst at Tremough Drive, Wytheville.

Herbert Hendrix
Herbert Hendrix, 90, of Route 1, Bastian, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in a Roanoke Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel, Bluefield, W.Va., with the Rev. Bobby Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens cemetery in Prosperity, W.Va.
Born in Raleigh County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Isaac and Sarah Webb Hendrix. He was a member of the Fairdale Free Will Baptist Church in Fairdale, W.Va., and was a retired coal miner and member of the U.M.W.A.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Nona Boggess Hendrix of Bastian; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Hazel) Webb of Glen Daniels, W.Va., Mrs. Valdia (Sarah) Barnett of Augusta, Ga., and Mrs. Tommy (Marie) Burton of Bastian; three sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert and Brenda Hendrix of Ashville, Ohio, Carl and Helen Hendrix of Brunswick, Ohio, and Louie and Phyllis Hendrix of Olmsted Township, Ohio; two sisters, Ethel Butcher of Powellton, W.Va., and Dora Clonch of Smither, W.Va.; and 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

James B. Horne
James B. "Jimmy" Horne, 69, of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 3:30 p.m. at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hallett Hullinger and the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667 conducting military graveside rites.
He was born in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Charles Steele and Bess Ann Barbe Horne. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech, Class of '51, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church in Camp.
He is survived by his wife, Janey L. Horne of the home; one daughter, Vicki Lynn Horne of Sparta, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn P. and Diana Horne of Charlotte, N.C., and Gary L. and Lynne Horne of Pawley's Island, S.C.; two brothers, Bud M. Horne of Rural Retreat, and Robert S. Horne of Greer, S.C.; a granddaughter, Rebecca Christine Horne; and several nieces and nephews.

Frances Kyle Huddle, 80, of Newton, N.C., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at her residence.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating.
She was born in Rural Retreat on March 17, 1917.
He was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sam W. Huddle.
Survivors include one sister, Anne Kyle Hall of Newton, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles Mitchell and Virginia Lee Kyle of Bedford, Texas; two nieces, Elizabeth Hall Mikels, and Konnie Kyle Frickman; and four nephews, William Ramsey Hall, James Ward Hall, Michael Lee Hall, and Frank W. Huddle.

Sally Louise Rhudy Long
Sally Louise Rhudy Long of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
She was born in Speedwell in the early 1900's, a daughter of the late Dr. Walter Weston Rhudy and Maude Porter Rhudy. She received her BA degree from Indiana University with honors in math and French and her masters degree from the University of Virginia. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta and Delta-Kappa Gamma sororities, a member of Wilderness Road Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, a Pink Lady at Wythe County Community Hospital for 20 years, and a patroness of many charities. She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church, a retired math teacher and guidance counselor at Fort Chiswell High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Long; and a brother, Dr. William Porter Rhudy.
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Sallye Webster of New Bern, N.C.; two granddaughters, Sallye Louise Webster of Houston, Texas, and Stephanie Long Webster Reynolds of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and five great-grandchildren.

Spurgeon Clyde McGrady
Spurgeon Clyde McGrady, 71, of Bland, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Maple Hill cemetery, Bluefield.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a medical corpsman aboard the U.S.S. New Yorker. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Spurgeon McGrady; a son, Timothy Wayne McGrady; and a brother, Gordon McGrady.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Farmer McGrady of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Ilene McGrady of Tazewell, and Andre and Karen McGrady of Bland; his mothers, Myrtle Worrell McGrady of Laurel Fork; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Georgie) Dalton of Hillsville, and Mrs. Melvin (Joy) Goad of Laurel Fork; five granddaughters, Shannon Durr of Princeton, W.Va., Gwyn McGrady of Bland, Cyndi Coleman of Wytheville, Amanda McGrady of Erwin, Tenn., and Alicia McGrady of Bristol; one great-grandson, Corey Durr of Princeton, W.Va.; one great-granddaughter, Rebekah Durr of Princeton, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Harry Thomas "Tommy" McGuire, 57, of the Mechanicsburg community of Bland, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
He was born May 4, 1940, in Mechanicsburg.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Edward McGuire; and a sister, Gay M. Kelly.

William Canless "Bill" Parks, 87, of Bastian, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Bastian Church of God with the Rev. William Hand officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill cemetery.
He was a son of the late Foster and Mary Parks. He was a member of the Bastian Church of God.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Jean Colley, Dorothy Lundy, and Edith Fulton; and a brother, Dewey Parks.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Parks of the home; two daughters, Patsy Jean Weydemeyer of Mountain Pine, Ariz., and Peggy Sue Hylton of Cumming, Ga.; two sons, Freddie Parks Covington, and Eddie Parks of Leesburg; two sisters, Mamie Estep of New Castle, Del., and Virginia Vaught of Huntington, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret Chandler Sawyers, 79, a resident of Asbury Center at Birdmont, died Monday, Feb. 2, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. William D. Dale Sr., and the Rev. Penny Dale officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.
She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Charles Franklin and Lisa Jane Kimberland Chandler. She was a member of the Original Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William D. Sawyers; and a son, Thomas Sawyers.
Survivors include two sisters and brother-in-law, Josie Alberta Earhart of Hanover, Pa., Dorothy Irene and Clifford Ferguson of Taylorsville, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Chalmer C. and Ola Chandler or Rural Retreat; three step-grandchildren, Neda "Libby" Lester of Glade Springs, Chip Ferguson, and Mike Ferguson, both of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Bessie Mae Lambert Sexton, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 3 p.m. at the Bland Community Church with the Rev. Leroy Long, the Rev. Claude Dove, the Rev. Ron Hutzel, and the Rev. Bill Dale officiating. Interment followed in the Stowers cemetery.
She was a member of the Bland Community Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Sally Edward, and Ana Stiltner, both of Bland; three stepsons, Olen Sexton of Bland, Curtis Sexton, and Wythe Sexton, both of Fredericksburg; two grandchildren, Betty Elmore of Wytheville, and Joe Stiltner of Bland; four great-grandchildren, Christy Stiltner, Charlie Stiltner, both of Bland, Audra Repass, and Tina Repass, both of Wytheville; and one sister, Kate Hancock of Bastian.

Walter Irvin Shockley
Walter Irvin Shockley, 69, of Ivanhoe, formerly of Salisbury, Md., died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at a North Carolina Hospital as a result of a previous accident which left him a quadriplegic.
A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 23, at his home, Shalom Farm in Ivanhoe. Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 25, at 3 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, Md., with Bishop Raymond Kohl of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officiating. Interment was in Springhill Memory Gardens, near Hebron, Md.
Born in Parsonsburg, Md., May 15, 1928, he was a son of the late Lelia Perdue Shockley and Walter D. Shockley. He was a prominent farmer in Wythe County, as well as Wicomico County, Md. He received many recognitions for his outstanding contributions to agriculture. He was also a carpenter.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elnora Shockley; and a great-grandson on Jan. 16, 1998, Dustin Todd Ellis.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda Rayne Shockley of Ivanhoe; a brother, Linwood Shockley of Salisbury, Md.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Albert Davis of Rosenberg, Texas, and Wanda and Steve Ellis of Salisbury, Md.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Penny Shockley, and Andy and Carole Anne Shockley, all of Ivanhoe, and David Shockley of Park City, Utah; and 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
