John Thomas Sipes

Mr. John Thomas Sipes, 60, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born and lived most of his life in the Chesapeake Bay area, and he had lived in Abingdon for the last three years. He was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his dearest and closest friend, Becky Gillespie of Bridgeport, OH; one son Johnny Arko of Cleveland, OH; one daughter Teresa Buscaglia and husband Dean McDonald of Abingdon; one brother Kirby Sipes of Damascus; one sister Shelia Thomas of Abingdon; five grandchildren: Charles Buscaglia, Christopher Buscaglia, Chasity McDonald, and Brandon McDonald, all of Abingdon, and Amber Arko of Cleveland, OH; and one great-granddaughter, Lona Buscaglia of Abingdon. The funeral service for Mr. John Thomas Sipes will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at the funeral home.

Genevieve A. Musick

Mrs. Genevieve A. Musick, age 80, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 in Abingdon Manor.

She was born December 27, 1927 in Washington County, Virginia to the late George Swartz and the late Lilly Harless Swartz. Mrs. Musick had lived all her life in Washington, County and was a member of Mount Carmel Christian Church.

Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Henry “Gene” Musick and one sister, Estelle Ingle.

Mrs. Musick is survived by two sons, Ken Musick and wife, Juanita of Bristol, Virginia and Ron Musick and wife, Jean of Meadowview, Virginia. Three grandchildren, Lisa Cole and husband, Dwayne of Morristown, Tennessee, Wendy Brewer and husband, Lance of Asheville, North Carolina, and Ginger Hyde and husband, Randy of Meadowview, Virginia. Three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Will, and Ridgely. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Granny, as she was known by most, was a very loving and caring person. She loved animals of all kinds, especially her cats. Granny was always ready to talk and shared her stories with everyone she met. Our favorite memories are filled with her giggles and grins. She never knew a stranger. Granny loved the Lord and found strength in her daily Bible reading. She shared her faith with everyone around her.

The funeral service will be conducted 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, 19, 2008 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Minister Tom Rayford and Minister Rich Pannell. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Larry Ingle, Dwayne Cole, Lance Brewer, Randy Hyde, Bob Ingle, and Kenneth Ingle. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

Rosa Ella McNew Irwin

Mrs. Rosa Ella McNew Irwin, age 79, passed away on March 16, 2008 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Blacksburg Virginia.

Mrs. Irwin was raised in Glade Spring, VA. She graduated from Radford College. Mrs. Irwin retired from the Montgomery County school system after 34 years of teaching.

She is preceded in death by her parents Charles Cicero McNew and Ella Howe Kelly McNew and one brother Charles Elmer McNew.

Mrs. Irwin is survived by her husband Harold W. Irwin of Blacksburg, VA; one son, Kris Irwin and wife Patricia, Lynchburg, VA; one daughter Jo Johnson and husband Jere, Christiansburg, VA; 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service for Mrs. Irwin will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mount Rose cemetery in Glade Spring, VA with the Rev. John Massey, Jr. officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to either: The Alzheimer’s Association, 207 N. Boone Street, SU 1050, Johnson City, TN 37604; or the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, 200 Progress Street NE, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

Jayla Cannon-Sullivan

Jayla Julia-Lynn Cannon-Sullivan, age 23, went home to be with God on Monday, March 17, 2008. She was a graduate of John S. Battle High School and was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended college in Abingdon, VA, Clarksville TN, and Knoxville, TN pursuing a nursing degree while following her husband’s career in the army.

Jayla is survived by her husband Jeremy Sullivan of Appalachia, VA, her mother and stepfather Robin and John Ratcliff of Bristol, VA, her father Don Cannon of Knoxville, TN, her sister Jessica Callahan and husband Brad of Abingdon, VA; her step-brothers Mitchell and Zared Ratcliff; her Mamaw and Papaw, Bud and Vicki Norris of Abingdon, VA, her in-laws Mike and Connie Sullivan of Appalachia, VA, her grandfather Tom Cannon of Bristol, TN; her grandmother Petie Ratcliff, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 21, 2008 from 6 pm until 8pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway Abingdon, VA. The funeral will follow the visitation with Dr. Paul Bufford officiating. A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at 11 am at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Honorary pallbearers will be Jared Hobbs, Jamie Jessee, Dan Lymbelopoulos, Mike Sullivan Sr., Jacoby Lovell and Shane McCracken.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family and will be greatly appreciated. Donations may be sent to Mrs. Robin Ratcliff for Jayla Julia-Lynn Cannon-Sullivan, c/o Farris Funeral Service, PO Box 427, Abingdon, Va 24212.

Rose Arrington Dunn

Mrs. Rose Arrington Dunn, 84, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at her home. She was born in Montgomery County, a daughter of the late A. J. Arrington and Nannie Sutherland Arrington. She was a former employee of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. Rose was an avid gardener who had a great love of the outdoors. She also enjoyed art and was a painter. She was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Dunn, and by her daughter, Paula Hoskins. She is survived by her son-in-law, Michael Hoskins of Abingdon; her special grandsons, Lucas Gibson and Andrew Hoskins, both of Abingdon; her sister, Shirley A. Bordwine of Abingdon; her brothers, Duard Arrington of Abingdon and Tom Arrington of Lodi, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Rose Arrington Dunn will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Evangelist Bill Neeley officiating. Burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Andrew Arrington, Cable Warren, Tommy Dunn, Tim Thompson, Randy Carmack, and Ron Tallman.

The family will visit with friends on Saturday from noon until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210, or to Cancer Outreach Foundation, 206 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211.

Pierce Calvin Quesenberry

Mr. Pierce Calvin Quesenberry, age 71, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Sunbridge Care Rehabilitation Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Quesenberry.

He is survived by his son, Greg Quesenberry; his siblings: Malcolm Quesenberry, Homer Quesenberry, Connie Crabtree and Bill Quesenberry, all of Abingdon; his step-mother, Ruth Quesenberry; several aunts and uncles; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for Mr. Pierce Quesenberry will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2008, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Junior Gobble officiating. Those attending the service are invited to meet at the gravesite by 2:50 p.m. on Saturday.

Mayford Nannie Jessee

Mayford Nannie Jessee, age 79, passed away Friday, March 21, 2008 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Washington County, VA and was preceded in death by her parents, Windom and Daisie Bott Long. She had been employed with Big Jack Sewing Company for twenty-four years.

She is survived by her husband, Harry G. Jessee, Sr., Abingdon, VA, her son, Harry Carlton Jessee and wife, Shawnee, Abingdon, VA, her sister, Cora Lou Kate Nunley, Abingdon, VA, her grandchildren, Kansas Jessee and Santanna Jessee, her nieces, Patsy Crabtree and Petina King, her nephew, James Nunley.

At the request of Mrs. Jessee, a graveside service will be conducted Sunday, March 23, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Garrett cemetery, Rt. 700, Abingdon, VA with Rev. Kenneth Widner officiating. Interment will follow. There will be no visitation in the funeral home at the request of Mrs. Jessee. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

Friends may call at anytime at the homes of Harry Jessee or Harry Carlton Jessee.

Frank Eugene Mumpower

Mr. Frank Eugene “Gene” Mumpower, age 86, died Saturday, March 22, 2008 in the Maryville Healthcare Center.

Mr. Mumpower was born March 11, 1922 in Washington County, Virginia. He was a son of the late Calvin Richard Mumpower and the late Addie Reynolds Mumpower. He was a longtime resident of Glade Spring, Virginia and Bristol, Tennessee before moving to Maryville, Tennessee in 1998. He was a member of Forrest Hill Baptist Church in Maryville, Tennessee. Mr. Mumpower served in the United States Army during WWII in the Pacific-Asiatic Theater and the Philippine Theater. He was awarded two Bronze Stars. Mr. Mumpower was a life member of the Patton-Crosswhite Post #6975.

Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Katherine “Kitty” Mumpower, one brother, Roy Mumpower, and two sisters, Mabel Lemmons and Lillie Belle Puckett.

Mr. Mumpower is survived by one daughter, Linda Carruthers and husband, Charles of Maryville, Tennessee; her children, Wes Carruthers and wife, Gina and Chad Carruthers and wife, Megan and seven great-grandchildren, all of Maryville, Tennessee.

The funeral service will be conducted at noon Tuesday, March 25, 2008 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, Virginia with Rev. Harry Sherrer officiating. Entombment will follow the service. The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until time for service.

Walter Lee Garrett

Mr. Walter Lee Garrett, age 45, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008. Lee was born in Buena Vista, VA, Rockbridge County and was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Guinn.

Survivors include his sons, Charlie Garrett, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Randy Garrett, Bland, VA, his daughter, Christina Garrett, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, his step-father, Dewey Guinn, Damascus, VA, his brothers, Junior Garrett, Manassas, VA, Bo Garrett, Clinchburg, VA, his sisters, Dianna Howell, Meadowview, VA, Norma Garrett, Elizabeth Bordwine and Ruby Taylor all of Abingdon, VA and Sissy Chambers, Hopewell, VA, two grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Jay Taylor officiating. Interment will follow.

Pallbearers will be Dickie Garrett, Leroy Howell, Andrew Garrett, Matthew Garrett, Gene Gadis, Michael Garrett, Robert Gadis, Eddie McCracken and Justin Garrett.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Norma Thelma Tipton

Mrs. Norma Thelma Tipton, 79, of Greensboro, North Carolina passed away Friday, March 21, 2008 after a lengthy illness.

Norma was born in Tom’s Creek, Virginia on March 1, 1929, she resided in Clinchco, Virginia where she met and married Oscar Tipton. In 1951 they moved to Michigan where they resided for 32 years before moving to Greensboro, North Carolina.

She is survived by her husband, Oscar Tipton, three daughters, Sharon Pasek and husband, Marty of Greensboro, North Carolina, Suzanne Dewar and husband, Don of Westland, Michigan, and Linda Olson and husband, Michael of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee. Four grandchildren, Donnie, Nick, John, and Heidi. Three great-grandchildren, Logan, Nora, and Delilah. She will be dearly missed by all.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 P.M. Monday, March 24, 2008 in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, Virginia with the Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 207 North Boone Street Suite 1050, Johnson City, Tennessee, 37604.
