HAMLET
John M. Hamlet, age 92, an attorney and former Charlottesville municipal Judge and later a Special Judge for the Commonwalth of Virginia, died December 9, 2001 at University of Virginia Hospital. Born August 28, 1909 in Charlotte County, he was the son of the late Dr. John M. Hamlet and Martha Elliott Hamlet. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lena Ann Wood Hamlet; and a daughter, Dr. Martha Ann Hamlet. Being a victim of polio at 18 months did not daunt an indomitable spirit he showed throughout his life. A graduate of Hampden Sydney College and the University of Virginia Law School, he entered private practice in Charlottesville. In 1947 he was appointed Judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court of Charlottesville to serve until 1950. After retiring from law practice he served as a Judge for special hearings for a regional part of the Commonwealth of Virginia for 21 years. he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sigma Chi fraternity and a Life Member of BPO 309 Elks Club. He married Lena Ann Wood in 1940 and they had two children. In 1965 he married Myrtle Courier Caul, who survives him, along with a son, John M. Hamlett III; and a granddaughter, Christine Brooks. Also surviving are a sister, Martha Davis; a niece, Charlotte Merry; and nephews, Francis Carter, Martha Carter and Elliott Davis. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at Hill & Wood Chapel with Dr. John Wilkerson Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at Westview Cemetery in Farmville. Those who wish may make contributions to Charlottesville/Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, Va. 22907. Hill & Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HARVILLE
Bessie Taylor Harville, 88, of Colonial Heights died December 9, 2001 at the Colonial Heights Convalescent Home. She was the daughter of the late Douglas and Hattie Edmonds Taylor and the widow of Lawrence Fergurson and Alton Harville. Mrs. Harville was member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, and the Federated Women's Club. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester with the Rev. Darrell Hammons officiating. E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, Colonial Heights, is handling the arrangements.

JACKSON
Deacon Jennie B. Jackson, age 77, quietly entered into eternal rest December 7. 2001. She was preceded in death in death by her husband, Clarence A. Jackson. She is survived by two daughters, Marya J. Clark and Kettie J. Turner; one son-in-law, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild; two brothers, eight sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 11, 7 to 8 p.m., at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland Va. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 12, 1 p.m. at the First Baptst Church, Manakin-Sabot, where remains will lie in state one hour prior to services, Rev. Edward Conley officiating. Interment Fauquier Baptist Church Cemetery.

JONES
Gracie A. Jones of Chesterfield departed this life Friday, December 7, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Letitia Jones; her son, JaVaka Jones; one sister, Frances Robinson; two brothers, Samuel B. Larry and Roland Jones; four aunts, one uncle, two sisters-in-law, a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Streets. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 12, 2001, 11 a.m. at Broad Rock Baptist Church, 5106 Walmsley Blvd., Rev. Vera Rhyne officiating. Interment in Berean Baptist Church, Chase City, Va. After 10 a.m. Wednesday remains will rest in the above named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church Wednesday, 10:30 a.m.

JONES
Leon Okley Jones, age 80, of Blackstone, Va., died December 9, 2001. He was the son of the late Virgil Leon and Maria Coleman Jones. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann W. Jones; a daughter, Faye J. Manson and husband, Tommy of Edwards, Colo.; two sons, Nelson E. Jones and wife, Virgie of Rawlings and Gene Raye Jones and wife, Yvonne of Charlottesville; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Denise L. Kirkland and husband, Michael of Richmond, Kimberly E. White of Venton and Beverly D. Young and husband, James of Chester; a stepson, Franklin D. White of Blackstone; seven stepgrandchildren; a sister, Helen Tuscany of St. Albans, Vt.; and two brothers, Southall Jones of Rawlings and Calvin Jones of Hopewell. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice J. Keefe. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Williams Funeral Home with interment in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rawlings. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville.

JONES
Margaret Adams Jones, 78, of Richmond, widow of Luther T. Jones, died Sunday, December 9, 2001. She is survived by her mother, Ellen C. Adams; five brothers, Julian A. Adams, Calvin L. Adams and his wife, Joan, Sterling C. Adams and his wife, Virginia, Floyd P. Adams and Eugene R. Adams and his wife, Bertha; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Jones was retired from G.C. Murphy Co. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, and where services will be held 2 p.m. Interment in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad.

JUDY
Samuel Benjamin Judy, MD, of 189 Trampus Trail, Franklin, N.C., died unexpectedly Saturday morning, December 8, 2001 at his residence. Dr. Judy was born December 26, 1921 in Parkersburg, W.Va. Dr. Judy is the son of the late William and Jessie Wamsley Judy. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1943 where he was an outstanding football player. In 1992 he was elected to the All Century football team at Virginia Tech. Dr. Judy chose medical school over a professional football career after having been drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He became the first scholarship athlete at Virginia Tech to attend medical school. Dr. Judy graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1948, where he specialized in family medicine, he did his residency at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, Va. Dr. Judy began his medical practice in Clarksville, Va. in 1949 and remained there for 43 years before moving to Haywood County, N.C. in 1992. He worked with the Hazelwood Family Practice until 1999 when he became associated with Westcare Family Medicine in Sylva and Franklin, N.C. Dr Judy attained many honors; he was a diplomate and life member of the American Academy of Family Practice, life member of the Virginia Medical Society, and member of the North Carolina Medical Society. He was named Clarksville, Virginia's citizen of the year in 1975. He also served as a deacon of Clarksville Baptist Church, president of Kinderton Country Club, and president of the Clarkesville Lion's Club. He is survived by his wife, Mildred McWhorter Judy of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Janelle and Keith Langford of Clarkesville, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Billy and Sandy Judy of Gibsonville, N.C., Jess and Kathleen Judy of Nashville, Tenn. and Bubba and Judith Judy of Greensboro, N.C.; one stepson and his wife, Don and Peggy Lamb of Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.; one sister, Edna Jane Miller of Loudon, Tenn.; three granddaughters, three grandsons, one step-grandson and two step-great-grandchildren. A celebration of Dr. Judy's life will be held at the Waynesville Country Club on Tuesday, December 11, 2001 from 4 to 7 p.m. Friends, associates and patients are invited to join the family. A memorial service will be held at the Clarksville Baptist Church in Clarksville, Va. at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2001. The family will visit with friends before and after the service. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to one's favorite charity or to the Haywood or Macon County Animal Shelters. Moody Funeral Home, Sylva, N.C. is in charge of arrangements.

Julia Mae Cooke Kendall, 74, of Richmond, crossed over Monday, December 10, 2001. She was the widow of her beloved husband of 59 years, Franklin Gregory Kendall and is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara J. and Donald R. Smith and Sandra K. and Houston F. Shiflett Jr.; five grandsons and their wives, Michael E. and Judy Jarvis, Joseph M. and Debbie Jarvis, Ricky D. and Cheryl Jarvis, Kenneth W. and Kim Shiflett, Kevin M. and Tammy Shiflett; 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, Duncan G. Cooke Jr. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mill Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

LITTLE
Lola Presley Little, 88, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on December 9, 2001. Mrs. Little was former director of Child Evangelism Fellowship of Richmond and a member of Gospel Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughters, Margie L. Rigby of Smiths Station, Ala., Charlsie L. Long of Richmond and Lorraine L. Sculthorp of York, Pa.; son, Earl M. Little of Richmond; sisters, Betty Murphy of Mt. Holly, N.C. and Helen Bland of Gastonia, N.C.; brothers, Curtis and Houston Presley of Belmont, N.C., Wade Presley of Hope, Ark. and Brady Presley of Easley, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10). Her funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Gospel Baptist Church, 1300 Turner Rd. Interment in Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship, Greater Richmond Chapter, 1612-A Milo Rd., Richmond, Va. 23225-7416.

MURPHY
William Thomas Murphy, 73, died December 9, 2001. He was widower of Patricia Walsh Murphy. He is survived by his daughter, Karen A. Murphy; his son and his wife, Michael B. Murphy and Janet S. Langhorne; his sister, Ann M. Trau; and many nieces and nephews. His children thank the staff of Westport Convalescent Center for the good care extended to their father. A memorial service will be held at the Central Chapel of Bliley Funeral Home on December 15 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the SPCA.

PLEASANT
Maria E. Pleasant of Richmond departed this life December 7, 2001. She is survived by six sons, Harvey, Linwood, Alvin, Douglas, Stanley and Sherman Pleasant; five daughters, Hazel, Alice and Roslyn Pleasant, Eunice Webber, and Evelyn Booth; 26 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, two brothers, one sister, a host of nieces and nephews, one son-in-law; three daughters-in-law, one brother-in-law, other relatives and friends, among them, three devoted family friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th St., where the family will receive friends Tuesday, 7 to 8 p.m. Remains will lie in state Wednesday, 12 noon, at Great Hope Baptist Church, 2101 Venable St., where funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Dr. Earl Bledsoe officiating. Burial Oakwood Cemetery.

Lillian Lucille Rose, 81, of Richmond, departed this life on Sunday, December 9, 2001. Mrs. Rose was a retired state employee with DMV. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Guff Keesee; her husband, Roy Lee Rose; and her granddaughter, Kelly Marie Waldron. She is survived by her children, Brenda L. Colliflower of Richmond, Anne R. Waldron of Amelia, James D. Rose of Chesterfield and Michael N. Rose; grandchildren, Andrea E. Waldron, Meredith A. Rose, David L. Rose, Steven Rose, Jennifer Neatherwood, Allison Robinson and Michelle Bowers; also seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where a funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Interment Dale Memorial Park. Louis L. Scruggs, 70, of Richmond, died Monday, December 10, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Nancy S. Scruggs; a daughter, Debra S. Baker and her husband, Chuck; four grandchildren, Amanda, Kelly, Chad and Zach Baker; a brother, Charles Scruggs; a nephew, Sonny Kickler; and other nieces and nephews. Mr. Scruggs was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth L. Scruggs. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd., where services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday. Clarence Ivey "Buddy" Smith Jr., 82, of Chesterfield, died Sunday, December 9, 2001. He is survived by wife, Emma R. Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Ivey III "C.I." and Regina S. Smith of Chesterfield; daughter and son-in-law, Carrie S. and Charles B. Schmidt of Richmond; two grandchildren, Brittany Smith and Stephanie Smith; two sisters, Edith S. Streetman of Winston-Salem N.C. and Lucille S. Anderson of Chester. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 3050 W. Hundred Rd., Chester. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

STEPHENS
Retired Master Sergeant Hovas Stephens, U.S. Army, 78, of Chesterfield, passed away December 8, 2001 in his home. Mr. Stephens was also retired from Huton & Williams law firm. He is survived by his loving wife and lifelong sweetheart, Gladys Beverly Stephens; his children, Richard Gregory Stephens and his wife, Lisa, Gary Michael Stephens and his wife, Debbie, and Caren Stephens Holloway; his two grandsons, Ryan Gage Stephens and Gregory Christopher Stephens and his wife, Carrie; and his great-grandson, Garett Stephens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. Services will be held Thursday, December 13 at 11 a.m. at Sherbourne United Methodist Church, 2619 Sherbourne Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or other cancer research organizations.
