Mamie P. Hicks
Mrs. Mamie P. Hicks, 94, died Sunday February 24, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and of the Methodist faith. She was a daughter of the late Wyndom and Rosie Byars Holley. She was preceded in death by her husband Zack Hicks; 2 sons, George and Clyde Pierce; one daughter Margaret Burke; 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
She is survived by 2 sons, Ray Pierce of Meadowview and James Pierce of Baltimore, Maryland; 8 grandchildren; several great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Bobby Briggs and Pastor John Surber officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Brad McNew, Ricky McNew, Brian Porter, J. W. Holley, John Surber, Jr., and Eddie Briggs.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Nora Compton Fletcher
Mrs. Nora Compton Fletcher, 86, died Monday February 25, 2008 at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie. She was a former resident of Alexandria, Virginia and of the Methodist faith. She was baptized at Grundy United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Fletcher; one son, John Compton; five brothers, Leonard, Corby, Evins, Grady, and Utah; and one sister, Eura Bryson. She was a retired waitress with People’s Drug Store in Alexandria.
She is survived by one son, Lon Arndt and wife Dawn of Michigan; her daughter-in-law, Joe Ann Compton of Abingdon; her brother, Garnie Compton of Grundy; three sisters, Sylvia Richardson of Texas; Maxie Compton of Bee, Virginia, and Orbie Karling of Michigan; four grandchildren, Kristi and Beckie Arndt, Jonathan Scott Compton, and Victoria Tilley; and one great-granddaughter, Ashlynn Tilley.
The funeral service for Mrs. Nora Compton Fletcher will be conducted Thursday, February 28, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, and family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Larry Lee Wise
Larry Lee Wise, age 60, went to be with the Lord on February 25, 2008.
Larry grew up in the Bluff City, TN area and had lived in the Abingdon, VA area for the past 19 years. He was a beloved father, husband, father-in-law, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed but will remain in our hearts forever.
He was preceded in death by his father Harmon Wise, his mother Georgia Lee Humphreys, his grandfather Walter “Granddad” Milhorn and his loving great aunt Repha Milhorn.
Larry is survived by his soul mate, loving wife and caregiver Anita Wise; his daughters, LeAnna Dawn Thompson and husband Chris of Meadowview; Lisa Marie McConnell and husband Chris of Abingdon, April Nicole Williams and husband Lewis and Michelle Lee Nuckles and husband Mark all of Kingsport, TN; his four grandchildren that were the love of his life, Clayton Riley, Logan Daniel, Hope and Nebraska; his sister Barbara Ann Bolden of Abingdon and a special uncle Eulice Wise of Abingdon

Friday, February 29, 2008 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Adam Wise officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Charles Franklin Nelson
Mr. Charles Franklin Nelson, 71, died Thursday February 28, 2008 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He lived most of his life in Washington County and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Houston and Beulah Wright Nelson. He was a supervisor with Dutt & Wagner for 21 years and worked at Abingdon Cleaners for 10 years. He was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his wife Margaret Marie Nelson; 3 sons, Harold L. Cutshall, Jr. of Abingdon, James L. Cutshall of Meadowview, and C. W. Nelson of Abingdon; 2 daughters, Deborah Diane Cutshall Sexton of Abingdon and Angela Faith Nelson Bussey of Glade Spring; 1 brother, Houston W. Nelson, Jr. of Louisiana; 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday March 1, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, with the Rev. Bryan Treadway and the Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joe Moore, Donald Carbary, Howard Carbary, Shannon Sexton, Chuck Sexton, Matt Cutshall.
The family will receive friends Friday at the Forest Hills Chapel from 6-8 p.m.
Dortheda Price
Mrs. Dortheda J. Price, age 79, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2008 in Grace Health Care.
Mrs. Price was born September 26, 1928 in Salem, VA to the late Joseph Johnson and the late Rose Gobble Johnson. Mrs. Price had lived most of her life in Abingdon and was a member of Washington United Chapel Methodist Church.
Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, David Price.
Mrs. Price is survived by two daughters, Susan Weller and husband, Glenn of Chilhowie, VA and Lisa Jarrett of Abingdon, VA. Three Grandchildren; Nicholas Weller, Brittany Coleman, and Zachary Jarrett. Two great-grandchildren, Addison Weller and Emma Coleman. Three brothers; L.C. Johnson of North Beach, Maryland, Jay Johnson of Toms Brook, VA, and Wayne Johnson of Front Royal, VA. Two sisters; Eilene Toon of Bristol, TN and Jean Gelken of Silver Spring, Maryland. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted 8 P.M. Friday, January 4, 2008 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (Located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens at 19415 Lee Highway Abingdon, VA) with Rev. Larry Lusk officiating. The family will receive friends in the Forest Hills Chapel Friday From 6-8 P.M. A committal service will be conducted 1 P.M. Saturday, January 5, 2008 in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum also located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens anyone wishing to attend the committal is asked to assemble at the cemetery by 12:45 P.M. Jerry Wayne Proulex
Jerry Wayne Proulex, age 58, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2008 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Jerry was a native of Wise County, VA and had resided in Abingdon most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irby and Clara Proulex and had served in the U. S. Air Forces.
He is survived by his wife, Dianna Tignor Proulex, Abingdon, VA, two sons, Paul Andrew Fulton, Abingdon, VA, Tommy Neil Fulton, Meadowview, VA, a daughter, Loretta Marie Proulex, Duffield, VA, a brother, Joseph Ricky Proulex, Abingdon, VA, three sisters, Catherine Rust, Abingdon, VA, Sue Bond and Lisa Salyers both of Castlewood, VA, eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 3, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Service, Forest Hills Chapel (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Rev. Paul Price officiating.
Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
Conley Ray Henry
Mr. Conley Ray (Jim) Henry, age 78, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 in the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsport, TN.
Jim was born in Washington County, Virginia on November 22, 1929, one of 16 children (including 5 sets of twins) born to the late Shannon Henry and Gertrude Lane Henry. He was preceded in death by his wife Patsy Reese Henry and his fifteen brothers and sisters, Sam Henry, Lucille Henry Roark, Lilly Francis Henry Ornduff, Eddie Henry, Dave Henry, Jeff Henry, Alice Henry Bowls, Jessie Pauline Henry, John Robert Henry, Lewis Henry, Louise Henry Graybeal, Ruby Henry Winebarger, Ruth Henry Crenshaw, Terry Henry and Jerry Henry.
Survivors include his sons, Danny Henry of Bristol, TN, Michael Henry of Bristol, VA and David Henry of Lebanon, VA; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Friday, January 4, 2008 in Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Donald Thayer officiating. Burial will follow the service. Those attending the funeral service are asked to assemble at the graveside by 3:50 P. M. Friday. In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Freddy L. Thomas
Mr. Freddy Lee Thomas, age 57, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2008 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Thomas was born February 11, 1950 in Smyth County, Virginia to the late Marion Stuart Thomas and the late Virginia Davidson Thomas. He had lived most of his life in Washington County, Virginia.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Dawn Thomas; three sons, Troy Thomas, Chad Thomas, and Marion Thomas. Two brothers; Joe Thomas and wife, Violet of Bristol, VA and James A. Thomas of Florida. Two sisters; Joyce Chapman and husband, Bill of Bristol, VA and Janice Price of Abingdon, VA. Two nieces; Kim LaRotonda of Millville, PA and Jennifer Price of Abingdon, VA.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 P.M. Sunday, January 6, 2008 in Sunset Memorial Park with the Rev. Bob Surber officiating. Everyone wishing to attend is asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:45 P.M. There will not be a formal visitation at the funeral home, but friends may come by the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service to sign a guest register book at anytime.
Clarence Jennings Jordan
Mr. Clarence Jennings Jordan, age 86, died peacefully at his home Friday, January 4, 2008.
He was a lifelong resident of Bristol, a member of Victory Baptist Church and was a U. S. Navy Veteran of WW II serving from 1940 – 1946. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Juanita Jordan.
Surviving are his children, Barbara Mumpower and husband Don, Mike Jordan and wife Becky, Vic Jordan and wife Debbie and Amy Simerly and husband Mike; his grandchildren, John Jordan and wife Regan, Shane Jordan, Don Mumpower, Jr. and wife Amie, David Mumpower and wife Karen, Katie Simerly, Sara Simerly, Audry Simerly, Phillip Jordan and Lauren Jordan; his step-grandchildren, Candy Brent and Brandy Toncray; his great grandchildren, Caden Jordan and Ryland Jordan, Parker Mumpower, Meredith Mumpower, Jordan Mumpower; his step-great grandchildren Katelyn Wicker, Kendra Brent, Laken Toncray and Aubrey Toncray.
A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Sunday, January 6, 2008 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon with Rev. Dan Birchfield officiating. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home. Anyone who wishes to may sign a guest register for Mr. Jordan at the funeral home. Tedd Blevins
Tedd Blevins of Bristol, Tennessee joined Rembrandt in the sky on January 4th, 2008. He was wearing a green shirt. Rumors have it that Van Gogh and Vermeer have asked Tedd to join them at the Bar of the Pearly Gates for a smoke and a Bud, but the multitude of slightly-clad and underage angels are apparently quite distracting. The bright orange and lavender bubbles are not helping, either.
Tedd is survived by his wife, Carole Blevins, sister, Christeene (Cricket) Sheets, daughters Adrian Blevins and Shelly Blevins-Stanley, sons-in-law Nate Rudy and Andy Stanley, and five audacious grandchildren: Weston and Benjamin Church, Madison and Cameron Stanley, and August Rudy.
A celebration in honor of his wit, joie de vive, and infamous life-force will be held at the Main St. Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, VA on Tuesday, January 8th, at 11:00 am. A more festive celebration of his life will be held this summer. The family will welcome friends and visitors at their home at anytime as well as following the service on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Virginia Intermont College (1013 Moore Street, Bristol, VA 24201) where he tried to be a bad influence on generations of young artists for 42 years. Sarah Katherine Mumpower
Sarah Katherine “Kitty” Mumpower, age 80, died Saturday, January 5, 2008 in the Maryville Healthcare Center.
Kitty was born on May 23, 1927 in the Clinchburg Community of Smyth County, VA. She was a daughter of the late Virgil Leonard Baldwin and Mary Agnes Mullins Baldwin and was also preceded in death by her brothers Frances Baldwin, Edward Baldwin and Cleo Baldwin.
She was a longtime resident of Glade Spring, VA and Bristol, TN before moving to Maryville in 1998. Kitty was a retired employee of the Virginia State School Board System and a member of the Forest Hill Baptist Church in Maryville.
Survivors include her husband Frank Eugene Mumpower; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Charles Carruthers; her grandchildren, Wes Carruthers and wife Gina and Chad Carruthers and wife Megan and seven great grandchildren, all of Maryville, TN.
The funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Monday, January 7, 2008 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, VA with Rev. Harry Sherrer officiating. Entombment will follow the service. The family will receive friends on Monday at the Mausoleum Chapel from 3:00 P. M. until the time of service.
