Edith Haga Hamm, 83, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. in All Nations Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Tony Holley and Jerry Stone officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service time.
She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Laura Creggar Haga and was a retired textile worked and a lifelong member of All Nations Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. "Bill" Hamm; and two brothers, Junior Haga and Clay Haga.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Virginia and Jim Burress of Rural Retreat, Va., and Thelma Maxine Hagen of Oak Harbor, Wash.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William "Bill" and Corazon Hamm, and Ranny and Kem Hamm, all of Wytheville, Va.; two sisters, Marie Sanders of Saltville, Va., and Mary Sult of New Freedom, Pa.; a brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Mary Lee Haga of Moneta, Va.; special friends, Myrtle Burnett of Wytheville, Va., and Frances Smith of Rural Retreat, Va.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home or anytime at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Ranny and Kem Hamm.

Arkie Hale Johnson, 62, of Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Speedwell, Va., died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her home.
A memorial service will be held later.
She was a daughter of the late Tom and Margaret Russell Hale.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Johnson of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Margaret Johnson of Orlando, Fla., and Martha Johnson of Branford, Conn.; three sisters, Frances Fowler, Betty Funk and Ginny Hale, all of Speedwell, Va.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Faye Hale, Russell and Willie Hale, and Joe Hale, all of Speedwell, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph Lawrence Pickett
Joseph Lawrence Pickett, 92, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church, Ivanhoe, Va., with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment was in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
He was born in Ivanhoe, Va., a son of the late Michael Leftridge Pickett and Blanche Gertrude Monahan Pickett. He was a lifelong member of Fairview United Methodist Church and was a retired electrical engineer with the Public Works Center, U.S. Navy.
He was a member and past master of Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge No. 235, A.F.&A.M., the Wythe County Royal Arch Chapter No. 51, Lynn Commandry No. 9 and the Khedive Temple of the Shrine.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Rash Pickett; a daughter, Patricia Ann Pickett Wadsworth; a granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth Walke Wadsworth; two sisters, Mary Jackson and Geneva Simmons; and three brothers, Eldridge C. "Pat" Pickett, William "Bill" Pickett and Ben Hur Pickett.
Survivors include a daughter, Sallie Jane Pickett Moore of Manchester, Conn.; a son-in-law, Capt. Ben A. Wadsworth Jr. of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Juanita and Foster Lawson, Maxine and Glenn Ingo, all of Ivanhoe, Va.; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Marvin Glen Rider
Marvin Glen Rider, 76, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m. at the Wytheville Seventh Day Adventist Church. Interment will be held privately later.
He was employed by the Carpenter Hosiery Mill and retired from Norfolk-Southern after 34 years of service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Signalmen and a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where he was a deacon for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Franklin and Bessie Harden Rider.
Survivors include his wife, Isabelle Clark Rider of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Nannie Alderman of Wytheville, Va.; two brothers, Eli Rider of Florida, and Richard Rider of Alta Vista, Va.; sisters-in-law, Willie Rider, Freda Rider, Gladyese Rider and Ruth Roberts; special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Roger King and family, Mr. and Mrs. Alvie Van Dyke and family and Helen and Bill Martin; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Wilmer Nelson "Smitty" Smith, 85, of Max Meadows, Va., died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in the Roanoke Community Hospital, Roanoke, Va.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
He was born in Pulaski County, Va. He was a retired supervisor with the Radford Army Ammunition Plant where he worked for over 20 years. He was a member of the Pulaski Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Copenhaver Smith; his parents, Robert Edward and Elizabeth Laudnum Smith; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Lee Smith and Robert A. English of Roanoke, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, James Nelson and Dotty Smith of Beaufort, S.C.; four sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Loveleen Copenhaver Hanes of Martinsville, Va., Dora Copenhaver and Buddy Roberts of Max Meadows, Va., Georgia Copenhaver and Thomas B. Ella Mae Harmon Hanshew, 80, of Ceres, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Kegley Manor, Bastian, Va.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 24, at 8 p.m. at the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel conducted by the Bland Chapter No. 41, Order of the Eastern Star. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres, Va., with the Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Ceres, Va. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres, Va., and the Bland Chapter No. 41, Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lorin Benton Hanshew; her parents, Samuel Tilden and Ella Mae Groseclose Harmon.

Albert Eugene "Bunny" Mustard Jr., 58, of Route 2, Bland, Va., the Crandon community, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. at the Bland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Morning Star cemetery.
He was born in Bland County, Va., the son of the late Albert Eugene Sr. and Elizabeth Newberry Mustard. He attended the Bland United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Mustard of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Tammy Evonne and Timothy Ratcliffe of Bland, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Brian Scott and Krissy Mustard of Tarboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Brian Christopher Mustard and Jordan Leon Mustard; and one sister, Jerri Fowler of Rural Retreat, Va.

Frederick Morrison Werth, 80, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at his home.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lacy Werth Carter.

Gordon D. "Dick" Keeley, 77, of Wytheville, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 7, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the East End cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion Post No. 9.
He was born in Dowagiac, Mich., the son of the late Lloyd J. and Clara Hartman Keeley. He retired from the U.S. Air Force and had worked many years for the U.S. Postal Service.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Schultz.
Survivors include his wife, Frances L. Brown Keeley of the home; a daughter, Patty Lephew of Wytheville; a son-in-law, Thomas Lephew of Wytheville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Edmonia Brown of Wytheville, Cleita Brown of Wytheville, Helen and Archie Williams of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Georgia Staley of Wytheville; grandchildren, Amy Pearl Lephew of Wytheville, and Donald Lee Harris of Fort Bragg, N.C.; two cousins, Florance Kraft, and Dean and Helen Leich, all of Dowagiac, Mich.; special friends, James Gravley and family, Nancy Hutton, Gerturde Lane, Sue Lanter, Kathy Sawyers, and Tommy Stoots and family; and several nieces and nephews.

Billy Ray Matney
Billy Ray Matney, age 66, died February 1, 2008. He was a 1960 graduate of Grundy High School. He was a chicken farmer, a U.S. Army veteran, retired from Island Creek Coal Company and Baker’s Electrical.
Mr. Matney was preceded in death by his parents, Arch Smith Matney and Roby Mable Breeding Matney; infant daughter, Clarissa and grandson, Zachary.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Donna Matney; three sons, Michael Ray Matney of Limestone, Tn, , Billy Joe Matney of Grand Blanc, Michigan, and Shannon Wade Matney of Bristol, Tn.; two daughters, Shannon Renee Stinnett and Dottie Bowman both of Abingdon, Va.
a brother, Swanson Matney of Abingdon, Va.; three sisters, Veda Brown of California, Tonda Fluke of Bristol, Tn, and Elena Darnell of Fall Branch, Tn.; five grandchildren, Joseph Stinnett, Anne Stinnett (Little Red), Madison Simerly, Gage Simerly, and Lucian Matney; friends, William Morgan, Donnie, Steve, and Trey; and several nieces and nephews.
