Helen Margaret Cole

Helen Margaret Cole, 75, of Cedar Springs Road, Sugar Grove, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Thursday Oct. 28, at 8 p.m., at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clayton Hounshell and the Rev. Guy Testerman officiating. Graveside services will be held Friday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Slemp cemetery in Sugar Grove.

She was born in Smyth County, a daughter of the late William Crockett and Selma Wolfe Mize. She was a member of the Maranantha Baptist Church in Sugar Grove.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Vincent Mize and Thomas Ralph Mize.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel Newton Cole of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Linda and David Ralph Griffitts of Sugar Grove; one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel Mark and Joyce Ann Cole of Sugar Grove; one sister, Virginia Ellen Woodyard of Pulaski; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Oct. 28, from 7 to 8 p.m., prior to the service, at the Lindsey Funeral Home or at the residence at any time.

Joseph E. "Joe" Davis Jr.

Joseph E. "Joe" Davis Jr., 69, of Max Meadows, the Fort Chiswell Community, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment will be in the East End cemetery.

He was the son of the late J. Elmo Sr. and Roberta Cornett Davis. He was a graduate of Max Meadows High School and attended V.P.I. and Bluefield College. He was a former member of the Wythe County Planning Commission, Max Meadows Ruritan Club, and Civil Air Patrol. He was vehicle manager for the city of Richmond, a longtime employee of Davis & Armentrout Construction Company, and ran the first refuse collection service in Wythe County.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy McGavock Davis of Fort Chiswell; two sons, Joseph E. Davis III and David McGavock Davis, both of Fort Chiswell; sister and brother-in-law, Edna Davis and Robert McKay of Huntington, Ind.; a grandson, Billy James Davis of Fort Chiswell; a special cousin, Alex M. Davis of Pearisburg; and several other cousins.

Julia Felts Funk

Julia Felts Funk, 64, of Fries, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at her residence.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel in Galax. Burial will follow in the Fries cemetery.

She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis W. and Opal Funk of Greensboro, N.C., and Stephen C. Funk of Johnston County, N.C.; her mother, Burter A. Felts of Max Meadows; a son-in-law, Kenny Funk of Independence; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Iva Jean Felts Aker of Max Meadows, Betty Felts and John Edmonds of Max Meadows, Helen Felts and Stephen D. Aker of Max Meadows, Margaret Felts and Dewey P. Collins of Max Meadows, and Janet Felts and Ray Wagner of High Point, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Guy Delon and Corine Felts of Max Meadows; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax is in charge of the arrangements.

Lola Agnes Smith Metz

Lola Agnes Smith Metz, 100, of Wytheville, formerly of Roanoke, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, in Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Tom Stocks officiating. Interment followed in Sherwood Burial Park.

She was a daughter of the late Sarah Elizabeth and John R. Smith of Wythe County. She was a charter member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church and a member of the Women's Benefit Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Metz of Roanoke in November of 1988.

Survivors include a special niece, Agnes Groseclose of Wytheville with whom she made her home; a special caregiver, Bobby Goodson of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Russell and Evelyn Hannabass of Roanoke; four sisters-in-law, Ruby Hartman, Julia Metz, and Cora Smith, all of Roanoke and Ruby Smith of Wythe County; and other nieces and nephews.

Oakey's Roanoke Chapel in Roanoke was in charge of the arrangements.

Bruce Allen Morehead

Bruce Allen Morehead, 67, of Dublin, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, in New River Valley Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Hollybrook Church of Christ with the Rev. James Conley officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Pulaski V.F.W. Post # 1184 in the Shiloh cemetery, Hollybrook.

He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Bland, the son of the late Alton Parker Sr. and Ruth Bowers Morehead. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn McCraw Morehead; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Hobert and Dorothy Morehead of Kernersville, N.C., Rodney and Betty Morehead, and Alton P. Jr. and Maxine Morehead, all of Bland; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate.

Marvin Lee Ryan

Marvin Lee Ryan, 48, of Speedwell, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.C. McPeak officiating. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence M. Ryan.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Ryan of Max Meadows; one daughter, Ashley Ryan of Max Meadows; one son, Lee Ryan of Max Meadows; a stepson, Joshua Whitaker of Max Meadows; his mother, Alice Parks Ryan of Speedwell; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jewel Goodman of Ballard, W.Va., Ruby and Benny Ratcliff of Crockett, and Faye and Gene Hale of Speedwell; and Johnny and Gale Ryan of Speedwell; 17 nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces.

Richard Franklin Weatherman

Richard Franklin Weatherman, 72, of Pulaski, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. C.R. Conner officiating. Burial followed in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.

He was born in Lynchburg on Nov. 13, 1926, and was the son of the late John and Lena S. Weatherman. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired sergeant with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department. He was also a member of the Pulaski V.F.W. Post #1184.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Pagans and Zella Meriweather.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hall Weatherman of Pulaski; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Peggy C. and Thomas Quesenberry of Pulaski; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Dennis C. and Millie Cox of Pulaski; a sister, Sybil W. Cook of Oroville, Calif.; six stepgrandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Building Fund of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Memorial Drive, Pulaski, VA 24301.

Alese Riggle Weddle

Alese Riggle Weddle, 76, of Marion, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn cemetery.

She was a member of the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, the Marion Pilot Club, Smyth County Community Hospital Auxiliary and Smyth County Extension Homemakers Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton H. Weddle.

Survivors include four brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard "Dick" and Martha Riggle of Wytheville, Roger and Libby Riggle, Nelson and Joan Riggle, all of Richmond, and Gerald Riggle and Elizabeth Yenner of Lake City, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 1799, Marion, VA 24354.

Lorrayne Stowers Curry

Lorrayne Stowers Curry, 82, of Bland, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 9, at 2 p.m. in the Temple Hill cemetery, Bland, with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating.

She was a daughter of the late Howard C. and Bessie Robinette Stowers and was a retired postmaster of Bland and a member of the Bland United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one son, Henry Newberry of Bland; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Ola Jane Martin, Josephine King, and Sarah and James H. Pauley, all of Bland; two grandchildren, Stephen H. Newberry and Mark Y. Newberry; and two great-grandchildren, Zachary Newberry and Greyson Newberry.

Blanche Porter Dixon

Blanche Porter Dixon, 82, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 6, 2000.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 8, at 3 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church with Pastor James Armentrout officiating. Interment will follow in the King’s Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

She was born March 17, 1917, in Crockett, the youngest daughter of the late David Reed and Gay King Porter. She was educated at King’s Grove School and furthered her education at Lee’s McRae and Radford universities. She was a teacher with the Wythe County School System for 41 years. After her retirement in 1979, she was still involved in numerous activities in her community and at the United Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, David Porter and John Porter; and her husband, Ralph M. Dixon.

Survivors include two sisters, Frances P. Delp of Crockett, and Helen P. Withers of Radford; a sister-in-law, Geneva D. King of Crockett; many special nieces and nephews including Nancy D. Jackson of Wytheville, Jane W. Coalson of Radford, Betty W. Gray of Blacksburg, and David R. Withers of Riverside, Fla.; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, including a special great-niece, Christy L. Jackson of Wytheville; several great-great-nieces and great-great–nephews, and friends.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Wythe County Hospice, 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Charles G. Graham

Charles G. "Gary" Graham, 46, of Cleveland, Ohio, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at his home.

Memorial services were held Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at the AMVETS Post 109, Mentor-on-the-Lake, Ohio. Inurnment was in Mentor cemetery, Mentor, Ohio.

Born Dec. 11, 1952, in Pulaski County, he lived in Mentor, Ohio, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio. He was an employee of General Electric Lighting Division. He graduated from Fort Chiswell High School in 1971.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rupert and Gail Graham of the Flatwoods Community.

He is survived by his wife, Diana L. Reed Graham; a brother, Dennis W. Graham of Cleveland, Ohio; a nephew, Chuck Graham of Cleveland, Ohio.

Frankie M. Leedy

Frankie M. Leedy, 81, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, July 11, 2002, in the Edgemont Center, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 14, at 3 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the East End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Leedy; a son, John E. Leedy Jr.; her parents and stepmother, William Glen and Elsie Hudson Martin and Annie Huff Martin.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Billy Fields of Wytheville, Va., and Donna and Donald "Dee" Stroupe of Crockett, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Charlene Leedy of Wytheville, Va., and Marty and Leslie Leedy of Wytheville, Va.; a grandson, Jeff Fields; four granddaughters, Dawn Fields Riley, Diane "Tink" DeHaven, Melissa "Lisa" Gamblin, and Chelsea Stroupe; great-granddaughters, Falon Ayers and Bridget Fields; a great-grandson, Troy Gamblin; a great-great-granddaughter, Diamond Ayers; a step-grandson, Jason Cornett; a step-granddaughter, Lauren Cornett; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Udell and Mary Leedy; and a daughter-in-law, Libby Leedy Richardson of Roanoke, Va.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel or at any of the children's homes at any time.

Clarence Fielden Armbrister

Clarence Fielden Armbrister, 92, of Max Meadows, Va., died Sunday, July 14, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 16, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. Interment will be held Wednesday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at the Armbrister Family cemetery, Wythe County, Va.

He was born in Wythe County, Va. He was a retired foreman with the Radford Arsenal and a lifelong member of the Locust Hill United Methodist Church. He was a carpenter, wood worker and gardener.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gracie Christly Armbrister; his parents, Samuel F. and Carrie Armbrister; a son, Lawrence E. Armbrister; a granddaughter, Drena D. Armbrister; five brothers, Price Armbrister, Buford Armbrister, Graham Armbrister, Niel Armbrister and Sullens Armbrister; and a sister, Mary A. Jones.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dallas and Doris Armbrister of Max Meadows, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Aileen and Bill Reynolds of Max Meadows, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Eula and Vivian "Mutt" Fink of Max Meadows, Va.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Garnett and Gertrude Armbrister, and James W. Armbrister, all of Max Meadows, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Mittie J. Armbrister and Marie A. Armbrister, both of Max Meadows, Va.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home.
