Charles M. Vaughan Jr.
Charles M. Vaughan Jr., 81, of Wytheville, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
A graveside service will be held Sunday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with a memorial service to follow at 3 p.m. at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Countiss and the Rev. George Jones officiating.
Born in Spring Valley in Grayson County, he was a 1941 graduate of Virginia Tech and a World War II Army Air Corps veteran. He was a lifelong educator, teaching agriculture in Dickenson and Giles counties before moving to Rural Retreat in 1949. He received both state and national recognition for his work, including the Honorary National FFA Award.
He opened and served as the administrator of the Wythe County Vocational School from 1968 to 1980 and served as president of the Virginia Vocational Education Association. He was an active community leader, serving for many years on the Rural Retreat Town Council, the Rural Retreat Fair Association, the Smyth County Community Hospital Board, the Wythe County Industrial Development Authority and the Rural Retreat Lions Club.
He was a devoted member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and taught the Wesley Fellowship Class for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Frances M. Vaughan of Wytheville; two daughters and son-in-law, Carol and Steve Dagwell of Salem, and Rosamond Vaughan of Issaquah, Wash.; a grandson, Michael Papadales of Issaquah, Wash.; a niece, Charlotte Philen of Galax; a sister-in-law, Jennie-June Vaughan of Spring Valley; and a foster sister, Hassie Leo of Silver Spring, Md.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church.

Lillian Claudine Brown of Route 1, Max Meadows, the Fox Fire Community, died Monday, Aug. 2, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Sawyers officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.
She was born in Smyth County, a daughter of the late Cleve and Henda Patterson Thompson and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sugar Grove.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Patsy Brown; three brothers, Harold Thompson, Grover Thompson and Robert Thompson; a half sister, Pauline Goins; and a half brother, Lewis Phipps.
Survivors include her husband, Eugene G. Brown of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and David Crockett of Max Meadows; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Denise Brown of Galax, and Eugene D. Brown of the home; two granddaughters, Shaunika Crockett and Nickysha Brown; a great-grandson, Nicholas Brown; three sisters, Wilma Austin of Max Meadows, Evelyn Austin of Cleveland, Ohio, and Louise Jordan of Takoma Park, Md.; two brothers, James Thompson of San Diego, Calif., and Quinton Thompson of Imperial Beach, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia Lee Cullop, 56, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 30, at 3 p.m. at the Lee Street Church of God with the Rev. W.T. Meredith and the Rev. Jerry Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow in the Blue Springs United Methodist Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Speedwell, a daughter of the late Charlie Mitchell and Mildred Virginia Crigger Cline. She was a member and a Sunday school teacher at Lee Street Church of God and was president of the ladies' auxiliary. She also worked with the food bank and bake sales.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harloe Bailey Cullop.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Charles Grubb of Wytheville; a son, Steven Mitchell Cullop of the home; two grandchildren, Scott Bailey Cullop of Austinville, and Charles Wesley Grubb III of Wytheville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty and Gene Amburn of Wytheville, and Shirley Thomas of Speedwell; four brothers and sisters-in-law, J.C. and Wilma Cline of Wytheville, James Earl Cline of Crockett, James Edward and Bonnie Cline of Rural Retreat, and David Rex and Peggy Cline of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Jeffery Keith Hall, 31, of Wytheville, died Sunday, July 25, 1999.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Hall; and a sister, Lisa Diane Anderson.

Ronald Kieffer Irvin, 64, of Hillsville and formerly of Crockett, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, in Hillsville.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 27, at 8 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsville.
He taught in various school systems in Virginia for the past 36 years.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Benjamin Kieffer and Baja Irvin of Roanoke, and David Hugh and LeAnne Irvin of Staunton; two sisters, Janice Musser and Evelyn Copenhaver, both of Rural Retreat; two brothers, Jack Irvin of Hampton, and Max Irvin of Crockett; and six grandchildren.

Emma Louise Jones, 77, of Austinville, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 30, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Bob Billingsly officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Floyd Melvin and Virginia Hawkins Jones, and was a lifelong member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a retired postmaster of the Austinville Post Office with 40 years of service and was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Grant and Leona Labby.
Survivors include four nephews, Jerry Grant of Valdosta, Ga., Michael Grant of Cordova, Alaska, Jay Grant of Ocala, Fla., and Thomas Grant of Georgia; an aunt, Lucille Hudson of Max Meadows; and numerous cousins and other close relatives.

She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late George Frank and Laura Hurt Buck. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Stuart Kinder.

She was born in West Virginia, the daughter of the late Kelly and Maude Jane Stroupe Cregger. She was a lifelong member of the Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. "Jim" Sexton; a daughter, Susan K. Sexton; and a grandson, Ronnie Fitzgerald.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie "Polly" Farris Nelson; two brothers, Thomas David Nelson and James R. Nelson.
