Wayne William Davis
Wayne William Davis, 78, of Ripplemead, died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The VFW and American Legion Posts of Giles County will perform graveside military rites.
Born in Bland County on Feb. 26, 1921, he was a son of the late Andy William and Mary Parcell Davis. He was retired from RAAP in Radford, was a veteran of the US Navy in World War II, had served in the CCC at Bastian, was a member of Giles County Farm Bureau, VFW Post 6000 and American Legion Post 68 in Narrows, and had formerly worked at the Giles Farm Bureau Store in Bluff City. He was an expert and avid gardener and a dedicated farmer.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin T. Davis.
Survivors include two brothers, Hubert C. Davis of the home and Charlie C. Davis of Danville; four sisters, Macie Griffith of Radford, Irene Blevins of Clinton, Tenn., Margaret Dudley of Danville, and Doris Davis of the home; nine nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Kendall Funeral Home.

Marvin Grady Harden
Marvin Grady Harden, 84, Atkins, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Tucker and Pastor Bob Kespelher officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Groseclose.
He was born in Smyth County, a son of the late John Kelley and Victoria Leedy Harden. Harden was a retired employee with the Brunswick Corp. in Marion.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Lindamood Harden.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Phyllis Harden of Crockett, Roger David Harden of Salem, and Doug and Charlina Harden of Atkins; one sister, Virgie Stowers of Marion; six grandchildren, Ricky Harden, Johnny Harden, Mark Harden, Crystal Harden, David Harden, and Denise Slusher; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Gerald Parke Schelling
The Rev. Gerald Parke Schelling, 77, of Collinsville, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999, in the Memorial Hospital, Martinsville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at Stanleytown Baptist Church in Stanleytown. Interment was in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville.
He was born Oct. 3, 1921, at Lancaster, Pa., a son of the late Thomas Park and Catherine Seachrist Schelling. He had attended Lancaster (Pa.) Bible College. He came to Wythe County in the mid-1950s to pastor the Max Meadows United Methodist Circuit. He later pastored at Fellowship Baptist Church in Wytheville for five years, Wheaton Baptist Church in Wheaton, Md., for nine years, Calvary Baptist Church in Timberville for 10 years, and Calvary Baptist Church in Rocky Mount for 11 years.
He was preceded in death by two sons, William "Bill" Schelling, and John P. Schelling; and a brother, Homer C. Schelling.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Gehman Schelling of the home; three daughters, Patrica J. Bailey of Danville, Rebecca C. Kimbrey of Burlington, N.C., and Sarah A. Rithie of Grottoes; four sons, Gerald E. Schelling of Bassett, David T. Schelling of Collinsville, the Rev. Daniel C. Schelling of Stuart, and the Rev. Timothy A. Schelling of Walton, Ky.; a sister, Jane Hemperly of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, James Schelling of Lancaster, Pa., and the Rev. Russell Schelling of Jefferson; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Oscar Kennedy Shelton
Oscar Kennedy Shelton, 87, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the East End cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by American Legion Post #9.
He had retired from the Armed Services after 31 years of service and the Radford Army Ammunition Plant after 10 years of services.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lucille Willard Shelton of Wytheville; two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice Shelton and Gale Lawson of Rural Retreat, and Tena Shelton Martin of Wytheville; a sister, Myrtle Cook of Radford; six grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Spencer Eugene Wilson
Spencer Eugene Wilson, 69, of Wytheville, formerly of New Jersey, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at his residence.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Oakwood Memorial cemetery with the Rev. Shelly Kyle officiating.
He was born in Wilson, N.C., the son of the late Spencer and Emma Davis Wilson. He was employed with the U.S. Forestry Service.
He is survived by an aunt, Dorothy Robinson of Patterson, N.J.; special friend, Naomi Ramsey of Wytheville, and a host of cousins.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Rhea McGee Billings
Rhea Jane McGee Billings, 81, of Wytheville died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Black, the Rev. Connie Black and the Rev. A.C. Ashford officiating. Burial will be in the Pickett cemetery, Carroll County.
She was born in Carroll County, the daughter of the late John Henry and Victoria McGee. She was the oldest resident of the Wytheville Housing Authority and was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Billings.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and James Dalton of Austinville, and Joyce and Thomas Gravley of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Patricia Billings of Wytheville; two sisters, Edith Harris of Ivanhoe and Dana Grimes of Bedford; one brother, Raymond Perry McGee of Wytheville; nine grandchildren and spouses, Vickie and Michael Stephens, Paul and Alice Gravley, Drema Richardson, Brenda Wright, Ricky and Romonia Gravley, Christy and Kevin Carroll, Terry Dalton, Jerry Dalton, and Tammy and Michael Keaton; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Fred Neal Earles
Fred Neal Earles, 69, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Rural Retreat Pentecostal Holiness Church with pastor Roger Crigger officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Carl Brown and Amma Amanda Pickle Earles.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Bell Barbery Earles.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Nichols Earles of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Jami Earles of Rural Retreat; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathi and Sam Akers of Rural Retreat, and Sherry and Carter Marshall Jr. of Sugar Grove; three granddaughters and spouses, Amanda and Chad Walk, Sandi and Sean Burlarley, and Miranda Marshall; one brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Dorothy Earles of Elkton, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

Barton J. Huddle
Barton J. Huddle, 77, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the Golden Years Convalescent Center.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Huddle Family cemetery in Wythe County with the Rev. Jeff Callahan officiating.
He was born July 5, 1922, in Wytheville to the late John Elliott Sr. and Maude Hartley Huddle. He was a World War II Marine veteran and a former instrument technician at Martin Marietta. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Elks Lodge #154.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Robbins Huddle; and two brothers, George Huddle and John Huddle.
Survivors include special friends, Rick and Carole Martin of Portsmouth.

Jacquelyn Clark Neel
Jacquelyn Clark Neel, 74, of Bland, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 12, at 3 p.m. at the Red Oak Church in Ceres with Pastor Murray Ann Ziegenfuss officiating. Interment will follow in the Red Oak cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was a retired factory worker and was the daughter of the late Carrington and Kate Hillenburge Clark.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Bob Pierce of Troutdale; one son, Robert Neel of Mt. Airy, N.C.; one brother, Marvin Clark of Bland; four grandchildren, John and Tonya Melvin of Bland, Tammy and Mark Davies of Roanoke, Jason Neel and Justin Neel, both of North Carolina; and one great-grandchild, Zachary Melvin.

Louise J. Pendleton
Louise J. Pendleton, 91, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at her residence in Asbury Center at Birdmont.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. at West End cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Wytheville, with a reception immediately following the service in the church's fellowship hall.
She attended Blackstone College in Blackstone, where she completed her last two years of high school and two years of college. In 1927, she earned a Virginia State Teacher's Certificate. She also attended summer classes at the College of William and Mary for four summers where she continued her music studies and was in several dramatic productions. She came to Wytheville in 1928 to teach in the elementary school. During her 10-year career, she taught the fourth and sixth grades. While attending St. John's Episcopal Church, Wytheville, she met her husband, Thomas Willis Pendleton, and they married
in Elizabeth City, N.C., on June 10, 1939. She was a member of the Helen Trinkle Music Club for many years and was its president for four years. She also taught Sunday school at St. John's Episcopal Church and was a member of the Wythe County Historical Society and the Wytheville Christian Women's Club. She supported the Barter Theatre in Abingdon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Willis Pendleton.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas Willis Pendleton Jr. of Seabrook, Texas, Roger Gregory Pendleton of Danville, and William Beale Pendleton of Atlanta, Ga.; three daughters-in-law, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, Wytheville; or Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 600 West Ridge Road, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Nancy MacIlroy Six
Nancy MacIlroy Six, of Richmond, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, after her 13 1/2 year battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 9, at noon, at the Christ United Methodist Church, Richmond. Interment was in Westhampton Memorial Park, Richmond.
She was an accountant for MacIlroy, Needham and Hiner Architects.
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Six; a daughter, Jennifer L. Six; her mother, Phyllis A. MacIlroy; a sister, Diane L. Moncure; a nephew, David S. Moncure; and her mother-in-law, Anna Lee Gusler Six.

Michael Wayne "Mike" Alderman, 23, of Route 1, Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999.

He was an equipment operator with Branch Highway, Inc.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Kathy Alderman Coley and Henry Coley of Wytheville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Debbie and Dale Dice of Max Meadows, and Alicia Goodwin of Wytheville; his grandparents, William "Bill" and Paige Alderman of Wytheville; his great-grandmother, Nannie Rider Alderman of Wytheville; a special aunt, Sherry Alderman Jones of Wytheville; stepgrandparents, David and Wanda Sue Coley of Max Meadows; a stepgreat-grandfather, James Coulson of Max Meadows; and many other relatives and friends.
