Flora Elizabeth Layne of Wytheville died Thursday, July 1, 1999, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 3, at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery with Pastor Jack Martin officiating.
She was the daughter of the late John D. and Kate Wallace Layne. She was a life-long member of the First Christian Church.
She is survived by several cousins.

Paul May, 77, of Bland, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999, at his home.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 1, at 11 a.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Conley officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
He was born July 26, 1921, at Pikeville, Ky., the son of the late George Washington and Nora Meade May.
He is survived by one son, George Wilburn May of the home; two daughters, Janet and Joanie; one brother, Noah May of Bland; and one sister, Georgie Greene of Kansas; two granddaughters; and a special friend, Elaine Sparks of Bland.

Theodore Martin Blankenship, 90, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in the Montgomery Regional Hospital, Blacksburg, Va.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. at Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Retreat, Va., with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery, Rural Retreat, Va.
He was born in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Martin and Alberta Poston Blankenship. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from Service Gas Co. in Wytheville, Va.
He is survived by his wife, Pearle Myers Blankenship of the home; one sister, Blanche Smith of Wytheville, Va.; two nieces, Patricia Smith Huddle of Rural Retreat, Va., and Carolyn Ross of Petersburg, Va.; and several other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 19, from noon to 1 p.m. (service time) at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Edward H. Evans, 76, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tenn.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Service Chapel, Marion, Va., with the Rev. Tony Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va.
He was born April 12, 1925, in Pageton, W.Va., a son of the late John Wesley and Lucy Evans. He attended Emory & Henry College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Rochester, N.Y. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was co-founder and co-owner of Evans Distributing Company Inc. of Marion, Va., and Norton, Va. He was a lifelong cattle and horse breeder, specializing in miniature horses.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth B. Evans of Rural Retreat, Va.; two daughters, Terri Street of Wytheville, Va., and her friend, Richard Moore of Greensboro, N.C., and Carol Evans and fiancé, Rick Morrison of Johnson City, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Edward L. and Jackie Evans of Mouth of Wilson, Va.; three brothers, Paul Evans of Rural Retreat, Va., Fred Evans of Richmond, Va., and Robert Evans of Norton, Va.; five grandchildren, Edward Brian Evans and his fiancée, Susan Wall, of Rural Retreat, Va., John Wesley Evans, Jason Wade Evans, both of Kingsport, Tenn., Katherine Lee Finne of Radford, Va., and Anna Elizabeth Finne of Roanoke, Va.; one great-grandchild, Jalen Wade Evans of Kingsport, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Nellie Lee Rhudy Park, 92, of Wytheville, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville. Va.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 3:30 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
She was born in Grayson County, a daughter of the late Boyd Alexander Rhudy and Senia Neal Vaught Rhudy. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist and was retired from Moss Brothers General Merchandise Company.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marven K. Park.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Callie Rhudy of Roanoke, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Lawrence Austin Umberger, 85, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Ann Blair and the Revs. Penny and William Dale officiating. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va. American Legion Post No. 9, will conduct graveside military rites.
He was born in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Pete and Wynoa Umberger. He was a retired stone mason and carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janette King Umberger.

Henry Jefferson Sutphin, 62, of Barren Springs, Va., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Dale Akers officiating. Interment will follow in the Sutphin Family cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, Va., a son of the late Charlie E. and Gracie Phillips Sutphin. He was a member of the Glenwood United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lula Ellen Sutphin.
Survivors include two brothers and a sister-in-law, Thomas and Myrtle A. Sutphin of Draper, Va., and Albert C. Sutphin of Wytheville, Va.; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene S. Rubye Rice Montgomery, 91, of Roanoke, died Thursday, July 1, 1999.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, July 4, at 2 p.m. in the Holston Conference United Methodist cemetery at Emory.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cosby Montgomery.
Survivors include a son, John Rice Montgomery of Roanoke; three sisters, Gladys Minga and Hazel Guffey, both of Bristol, and Cordie Bowers of Elizabethton, Tenn.; two brothers, C.M. Rice of Abingdon, and Fleet Rice of Mendota; and many nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations by made to Canterbury, a non-profit organization for children, in care of any First Virginia Bank. Donations will be used to purchase equipment and supplies for elementary schools.

Violet Virginia Saferight, 89, of Wytheville, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 4, at 2 p.m. at the Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Billingsley officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was a daughter of the late Landon Blaine and Allie Crigger Reed. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ribble Saferight.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Phyllis and Roy McPeak of Wytheville, and Allie Jane Moore of Abingdon; four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Frances Saferight, Eulles Saferight, William Saferight, and Landon and Patricia Saferight, all of Wytheville; three sisters, "Jute" Nagy of Roanoke, "Bert" McAllister of Blacksburg, and Minnie Ale of Maryland; a brother, Jim Reed of Max Meadows; 15 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Frances Louise Hull, 65, of Bastian, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery, Bastian.
She was born July 12, 1934 at Bastian, a daughter of the late Jasper Ernest and Maggie Elizabeth Neal Thomas.
She is survived by her husband, John William Hull; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marcinia and Russell Mondy of Seneca, Ill., Marie Hunter of Wilmington, N.C., and Barbara and John Peak of Bastian; two brothers, Douglas Thomas of Montcalm, W.Va., and William Thomas of Bastian; two sisters, Jewel Richardson of La Belle, Fla., and Ruby Munsey of Montcalm, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Logan Mondy, Kyle Mondy, Ralph Hunter Jr., and a special granddaughter, Kayla Peak.

He was employed by Dalton Enterprise of Rural Retreat. He was a son of the late Bob and Mary Kincer Malone.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mitchell Malone.

He was born in Rockingham County, N.C., the son of the late William Euell and Doris Sisk Tuggle. He was employed with Pulaski Furniture Corp.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gravley Tuggle; a half-brother, Gerald E. Tuggle of Dublin; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Edna and James Tate of Mt. Airy, N.C., Julie Warden of Max Meadows, and Jimmy Gravley of Dublin; and several nieces and nephews.
