Margaret Fisher Moore
Margaret Fisher Moore, 92, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
She had been a resident of Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va., in recent years. She was a daughter of the late Frances Morehead and Charles Repass Fisher. She was a graduate of Marion Junior College and Roanoke College and had a masters degree from the University of Virginia. She spent the greater part of 40 years teaching school in Burkes Garden, Va., Wilmington, N.C. and Roanoke, Va. She was active in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and served on board of St. John's cemetery, She was a member of the Wilderness Road Chapter DAR, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Wythe County Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Towson Moore; one sister, Elizabeth Fisher Elan; and one brother, Alfred Foster Fisher.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Moore and Paul Engsberg of Sewanee, Tenn.; two grandchildren and their spouses, Elizabeth and Robert Meyer of Charlotte, N.C., and Towson and Sarah Engsberg of Atlanta, Ga.; a great-grandson, Robert Blakeney Meyer Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.
The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 2 p.m. (service time) at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Asbury Center at Birdmont or St. John's Lutheran cemetery.

Evelyn Neff Buck, 90, of Portsmouth, Ohio, formerly of Rural Retreat, Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at the Carter Nursing and Rehab Center in Grayson, Ky.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, Va., with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery, Rural Retreat, Va.
She was born Feb. 10, 1912, in Rural Retreat, Va., a daughter of the late Martin and Nannie Copenhaver Lindsey. She was a member of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church and its Builder's Class. She was a retired supervisor with the former Williams Manufacturing Co.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Buck in 1955; four brothers, Dr. Garnett Neff, Fred Neff, Fred Lindsey, and Martin Luther Lindsey Jr.; a sister, Willa Lindsey; and a half sister, Clara Steele.
Survivors include a half brother, James C. Lindsey of Rural Retreat, Va.; a nephew, James Neff of Grayson, Ky.; a niece, Letty Ellen Dodsworth of Fairfield, Ohio; and several other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, Aug. 30, from noon until 2 p.m. (service time) at Lindsey Funeral Home.

Magdalene Porter Crockett, 88, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, in the Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with Jack King officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Crockett; her parents, James O. and Margaret Rebecca Bralley Porter; a son, James Robert "Bob" Crockett; a daughter, Jo Ann Hodges; and a sister, Gladys McCloud.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Shelva and Clyde Gravely of Max Meadows, Va., Alice and Frank Williams of Greensboro, N.C., and Gay Smith of Ivanhoe, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, William D. "Bill" and Della Crockett of Kernersville, N.C., and the Rev. Donald W. and Regina Crockett of Max Meadows, Va.; a special grandson and his spouse, Danny Ray "Dude" and Robyn Crockett of Wytheville, Va.; special nieces, Lana Lou McCloud of Roanoke, Va., and Patricia Arnold Nashville, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home or at the home at any time.

Byrd Manuel Bourne
Byrd Manuel Bourne, 86, of Wytheville died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at her residence. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at Gillman Funeral Chapel, Wytheville. Interment will be in East End cemetery, Wytheville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Bourne.
She is survived by one son, Jimmy Bourne of Wytheville; two sisters, Mary Lou M. Clemons and Georgia M. Gillman, both of Wytheville; two brothers, Jesse S. Manuel of Wytheville and Charles H. "Buddy" Manuel of Beaufort, S.C.; special friend, Mary Ann Fields; and one grandson.

Mamie Holliday Bralley
Mamie Ester Holliday Bralley, 97, of Ivanhoe died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel, Austinville, with the Rev. A.C. Ashford and the
Rev. Mike Waller officiating. Burial was in the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe.
Born in Wythe County, she was a daughter of the late Charles Robert and Annie Strickler Holliday. She was a member of Forest United Methodist Church and Ivanhoe Sunshine Rebekah Lodge #20.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac "Ike" Bralley; a son, Edward Michael "Mickey" Bralley; four sisters and one brother.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles "Cork" and Doris Bralley of Rural Retreat, James Robert "Jim Bob" and Dixie Bralley of Augusta, Ga.; one sister, Betty Holliday of Ivanhoe; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Floyd Lee Carroll
Floyd Lee Carroll, 53, of the Mechanicsburg community of Bland died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at his home.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 15, at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate with the Rev. Joe Taylor and the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg cemetery in Mechanicsburg.
He was born Dec. 3, 1948, at Mechanicsburg, son of Louise Walker Carroll of Mechanicsburg and the late Lewis Lee Carroll. He was retired from VDOT and was a member of the Mechanicsburg Christian Church. He loved ballgames, playing horseshoes, hunting and fishing.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by four sisters and brother-in-law, Geneva C. and Ward Pauley Jr., Dottie C. Drummond and Juanita C. Farlow, all of Bland, and Sheila Carroll of Williamsburg; a nephew, Kevin Pauley; two nieces, Amy Rasnack and Ashlee Drummond; two great-nieces, Brittanie and Sara Jo Rasnack; several aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.

Pearl Cox Cassell
Pearl Lucille Cox Cassell of Ceres, 105, one day short of 106, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the Edgemont Center in Wytheville.
She was born Sept. 14, 1896, in Bland County, a daughter of the late Lee and Susan Groseclose Cox and was preceded in death by her husband, Davis Cassell. She graduated from Ceres High School and taught school at the Cave School. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Filmore and Marie Cassell of Ceres; one sister, Alberta Cox of Ceres; seven grandchildren and spouses, Harold and Linda Cassell of Salem, Iris and Maynard Gardner and Eugene Cassell, all of Wytheville, Arleene and Reggie White of Jacksonville, Fla., Arnold and Donna Cassell, Carlton and Betty Cassell and Valerie and Jerrie Mutter, all of Ceres; 13 great-grandchildren, Tim Cassell, Tyron Cassell, Eric Gardner, Heather Gardner, Jason Gardner, Adam Gardner, Scott White, Ben White, Daniel White, Christopher Cassell, Shawn Cassell, Michael Cassell and Kimberly Cassell; and one great-great granddaughter, Cayla Cassell.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 15, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Ceres with the Rev. Ruth Ann Henley officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Ora Kate Dye Clark
Ora Kate Dye Clark, 77, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept, 17, at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Billingsley officiating. A graveside service followed at Greenhill Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, with the Rev. Tony Shrader officiating.
She was born in Tazewell County, June 4, 1925, daughter of the late Charlie William and Pearlie Mae Dye.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Clark.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Lynne Clark of Abingdon, David and Frances Clark of Colonial Heights, and James Clark of Cedar Bluff; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Pansie Boyd of Centerline, Mich., Della and Robert Davis of Centerline, Mich., and Janas and Cliff Reeve of Warren, Mich. Two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gaines and Alberta Dye of Chicago, Ill., and June and Vivian Dye of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Felty Corvin, age 85, of Wytheville died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 in Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral service were held Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the West End United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Johnson. Interment followed in the Lebanon Lutheran cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late John W. and Edna Martin Felty. She was a member of the West End United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Lloyd Corvin.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William B. "Bill" and Mary N. Corvin of Herndon and Willis G. "Tommy" and Loretta S. Corvin, of Thaxton; one sister, Margaret Hurt Snavely of Wytheville; five grandchildren and spouses, David and Karen Corvin, of Cattlet, Mike Corvin of Park City, Utah, Jeff Corvin, of Washington, D.C., John and Amy Corvin, of Virginia Beach, and Jamie and Tammy Corvin of Summerduck; five great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Earnest Bane Davis Jr.
Earnest Bane Davis Jr., 32, of Washington, D.C., formerly of Pulaski, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. James Black officiating.
Interment followed in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
He was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, and was employed at the Mt. Vernon Hospital in Chesterfield, as a physical therapist.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dave and Mary Davis.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Earnest Bane Sr. and Donna Davis of Clearwater, Fla.; mother, Cheyerl Davis Carbajal of East Bend, N.C.; two sisters, Susan Diane Davis of Dublin, and Debra Lynn Farmer of Pulaski; a maternal grandfather, Chaffin C. Patterson of Dublin; maternal grandmother, Peggy Ellen Riggins of Wytheville; aunts and uncles, Nancy Viars of Dublin, Thelma McDaniel of Pulaski, Douglas Davis of Ivanhoe, and George Marshall Davis of Ivanhoe; special extended family, Roger and Brenda Dawson, Scott and Leslie Dawson, and Tim and Sarah Dawson, all of Pulaski.

Anna Lois McFarland Hancock
Anna Lois McFarland Hancock, 86, of Ceres died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, after a long illness in Takoma Adventist Hospital, Greeneville, Tenn.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 20, in the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ruthanne Henley officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Aileen and Donald Solomon in Greeneville, Tenn., since 1998. She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Loranza D. "L.D." McFarland and Rosa Mae King McFarland.
She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron Hancock; a grandson, Robert Thompson, and a great-granddaughter, Erica Burton.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Mae and Donald Hanshew of Ceres, Doris and Lenden Thompson of Burkes Garden, Aileen and Donald Solomon of Ceres; a son and daughter-in-law, Alvin and Tammy Hancock of Ceres; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Howard Hurley
Howard Hurley, 81, of Manassas, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at Prince William Hospital in Manassas.
Funeral service were held Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Price Funeral Home in Manassas, with the Rev. Carol Bookwalter officiating. Interment followed in the Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Manassas.
Survivors include his mother, Nellie Hurley, of Damascus; a brother, Tommy Hurley of Abingdon; three sisters, Grace Hurley of Damascus, Margaret Taylor of Charlotte, N.C., and June Veatch of Americus, Ga.

Jessie Mechem Ledford
Jessie Mechem Ledford, 102, of Rural Retreat died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in Bland County. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 20, at Marvin United Methodist Church in Wythe County with the Rev. Tony Perry and the Rev. Gene Kirk officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
A native of Columbus, Ind., she was a noted educator and churchwoman. She received her undergraduate education at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree at a time when few women attended a university at all.
She subsequently went to Columbia University where she earned her master’s degree in 1930. After receiving her undergraduate degree, she traveled to the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee, intending to serve the educational needs of the poor of Appalachia.
She taught at Pittman Center near Sevierville, Tenn., in the 1920s where she met her husband-to-be, Allen James Ledford, who later became a United Methodist minister.
She left to continue her studies at Columbia University where she met the president of Berea College, Berea, Ky., who invited her to come to Berea to help train future teachers.
Together, the Ledfords served a number of churches in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Her husband was the founder and first principal at Clinch High School in Hawkins County, Tenn. Mrs. Ledford taught English there.
In the early 1960s, the couple moved to Rural Retreat where he served as minister of Marvin United Methodist Church. She was widowed in 1981.
Survivors include her only daughter, Maggie Ledford Lawson Hill of Prague, Czech Republic; five grandchildren, James Edward Lawson and Sarah Elizabeth Lawson Russell, both of Rural Retreat, Margaret Rose Lawson Lanahan of Asheville, N.C., Charles Frederick Lawson of Wytheville and Laura Ellen Lawson Rosbottom of Apex, N.C.; and seven great-grandchildren.
