Albert Charles Crockett, 69, of Foxfire Road, Max Meadows, Va., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Franklin Street United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Eugene Crockett and the Rev. Kenneth Sawyers officiating. Interment will follow in the Crockett Family cemetery, Austinville, Va. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was born April 1, 1933, in Austinville, Va. He was retired from the Chevrolet Gear and Axle Company. He served in the U.S. Army and attended the Franklin Street United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Charlie Harmon Crockett and Jennie Mitchell Crockett; five brothers, Isaiah Crockett, Chester Crockett, Richard Crockett, Garfield Crockett and Rupert Crockett; and two sisters, Laura Crockett Williams and Beulah Crockett Sherman.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Jewell Crockett of the home; two sons and one daughter- in-law, Kelvin Lee and Carmella Crockett of Washington, D.C., and Byron Durant Crockett of Detroit, Mich.; three brothers, Sherman Crockett and the Rev. Eugene Crockett, both of Austinville, Va., and Archie Ray Crockett of Appomattox, Va.; four sisters, Mabel Crockett Nelson of Austinville, Va., Ella Mae Crockett Williams of Washington, D.C., Agnes Crockett Eades of Wytheville, Va., and Shirley Crockett Watson of Washington, D.C.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Jean Peterson Knight
Jean Peterson Knight of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, in Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. at the Friends cemetery in Quaker City, Ohio, with the Rev. Oscar Brown officiating.
She was born in Jasper, Mo., a daughter of the late William T. Peterson Sr. and the late Emily Adele McKenzie Peterson. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard R. Knight, who died in September 1989; two brothers, Cecil H. Peterson and William T. Peterson Jr.; and sister, Faye P. Rock.
Survivors include a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Rosslyn and Kelsey Beard; four nieces and a spouse, Mary Ann Peterson, Jean and Thomas Nicholson, Melissa Nicholson and Brooke Nicholson; and two nephews and a spouse, John D. Sr. and Shannon Rock, and John D. Rock Jr.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Mary Ethel Danner Ayers, 84, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va., after a short illness.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Jim Jenkins and the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
She was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Max Meadows, Va., a daughter of the late James H. and Pearl Thacker Danner. She was a member of Max Meadows United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank N. Ayers; a sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Randolph White; a brother, Melvin Danner; and a son-in-law, Jack Ellison Jr.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Susan and James Ellison of Rural Retreat, Va., Carolyn Ellison of Rural Retreat, Va., and Ethel and Pete Wright of Wytheville, Va.; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence of her daughters, Ethel Wright at 1420 W. Monroe St., Wytheville, Va., Susan Ellison and Carolyn Ellison in Rural Retreat, Va., at any time.

Otha "Pauline" Powers Hawkins, 77, of Radford, Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at the New River Valley Medical Center, Radford, Va.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford, Va., with the Rev. Scott Powers officiating. Interment will follow in Sunrise Burial Park, Radford, Va.
She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Powers.
Survivors include her husband, Calvin J. Hawkins of Radford, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Tommy Rumburg of Rural Retreat, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Mary Hawkins of Summersville, S.C.; her mother, Eura B. Powers of Clintwood, Va.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Arnold, Angela Arnold, Tommy Arnold, and Tim Hawkins; two stepgrandchildren, Shaun Thomas and Shauna Williams; and six great-grandchildren.

Fannie M. Mills, 91, of Max Meadows, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

She was a member of the Locust Hill United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Aaron J. Peake Sr. and Marzelle B. Mills; her parents, Robert and Cora Camille Moore; and step-father, John H. Harmon; three brothers, James R. Moore, Henry A. Moore, and Ollie Lee Moore; and two sisters, Mattie M. Armbrister and Pearl E. Lovell.

Margaret Susan Monroe, 95, of Logan, W.Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, of natural causes.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. at Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Holden, W.Va. Interment will be at Guyan Memorial Gardens in Godby Heights, W.Va.
She was born Nov. 3, 1906, in Wytheville, Va., and was married
to the late John Daniel Monroe of Wytheville, Va., on Oct. 1, 1924. They had 13 children. Shortly after marriage, they relocated to Logan, W.Va., were they lived and raised their family for over 60 years. She was a member of Shaffer Chapel A.M.E. Church, Omar, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Pauline Johnson; four brothers, John Johnson, James Johnson, Richard Johnson and Henry Johnson; two sisters, Lilly Mae Rakes and Mildred Peoples; her husband of 66 years, John D. Monroe; and four children, James Monroe, Mary Monroe, Martha Monroe and Magdalene Monroe.
Survivors include her brother, Gilbert Johnson of West Virginia; nine children and their spouses, Arthur Lee and Jean Monroe of Ohio, Margaret Griffin of Ohio, Wilbur and Ordella Monroe of West Virginia, Curtis and Cathy Monroe of Florida, Catherine and Louis Montgomery of Florida, Gwendolyn and James Brockington of Ohio, Carrie and Leonard Davis of Virginia, Diane and Ernest Burress of Ohio, and John and Caroline Monroe of Ohio; and well over 200 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, from noon to 1 p.m. (service time) at Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Holden, W.Va.

Billy Ray Branson
Billy Ray Branson, 70, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at his home.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Donald Stansell and the Rev. Dr. William Rodgers officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military graveside rites.
He was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Russell County, a son of the late Robert Ray and Emma Mabel Branson. He was a U.S. Army first sergeant in the Corps of Engineers having served from 1949-1956, including the Korean Conflict.
Early in his professional life, Branson was a miner for Clinchfield Coal Co. in Dante. After an accident that injured both his legs, he went to Steed College in Johnson City, Tenn., where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
He then went to work for the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission as a planner in 1972. He was hired as county administrator of Wythe County in 1977 where he served until his retirement in 1996.
He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Wytheville Oddfellows Lodge and American Legion Post 9. He had coached both youth league baseball and soccer and was an avid bridge player.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Taylor.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Naff Branson of the home; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Timothy Brian and Kathy Branson of Bluff City, Tenn., William Randal and Kathy Branson of Bristol, Va., Christopher Alan and Wanda Branson of Richmond, Va., and Robert Ray Branson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darst and Russell Guest of Lyman, S.C., and Charlene and Stephen Wheeler of Floyd County, Va.; two brothers, Kirk Branson of Kingsport, Tenn., and David Branson of Blountville, Tenn.; and two sisters, Nanie Smith of Coeburn and Thelma Couch of Castlewood.

She was the daughter of the late Henry and Bertha Hale Manning.

Charles Harlan Huddle, 87, of Speedwell, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in the Grayson Nursing Rehab Center, Independence, Va.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel, Rural Retreat, Va., with the Rev. J. Scott Adkins and the Rev. Robert Billingsley officiating. Inurnment will be later in the Mountain View cemetery, Rural Retreat, Va.
He was born in Speedwell, Va., a son of the late Joseph Crockett and Ada Horne Huddle. He was a well-known farmer and a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis G. Huddle and William Richard Huddle; and two sisters, Mary Jane Huddle and Elizabeth B. Huddle.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Blanche Vaught Huddle; three daughters and son-in-law, Rebecca L. Huddle of Speedwell, Va., Vivian E. Huddle of Richmond, Va., and Jo H. and Jerry Swiney of Speedwell, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born March 22, 1927, in Lone Ash, Va. He was baptized a member of Main Street Pentecostal Holiness Church and was also a member of the Sylvatus Ruritan Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred McTeer and Burlie Wright Mahone; and a sister, Ruth Mahone Palmer.
Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby Mahone and Eldridge Slusher of Pulaski, Va.; a special niece, Suellen M. Palmer of Barren Springs, Va.; a special pet and companion, Judy.
