Reece Eugene Cannoy, 78, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002 at his residence.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Nov. 1, at 2:30 p.m. in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Kevin Fiorini officiating.

He was born in Davey, W.Va., and was a retired truck driver. He was a veteran of World War II, serving on the Battleship USS Wisconsin. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Farmer Cannoy of the home; son and daughter-in-law, William Reece and Pamela Cannoy of Pocahontas, Va.; two daughters and sons –in-law, Norma and Warren "Pete" Phillippi of Wytheville, Va., and Donna and Keith McAllister of Rural Retreat, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Marshall Peters of Ripplemead, Va.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 1, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church.

Mildred Layden Archer

Mildred Ida Layden Archer, 89, of Chatham, Va., died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 at the Meadowbrook Terrace in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Graveside service will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She preceded in death by her husband, Edward Blair Archer.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Civil Archer of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Jerry Lee and Kim-Tucker Archer of Round Hill, Va.; three grandchildren, Page Archer, Kelly Archer and Jenny Archer; three brothers, two sisters and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 1, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Walter William Farmer

Walter William Farmer, 81, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002.

Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Quarryville, Pa., with the Rev. Kevin Fiorini officiating. Interment will be in the Union Presbyterian Church cemetery. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at Mt. View United Methodist Church, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Kevin Fiorini officiating.

He was a retired truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James P. and Margaret Jones Farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Luella Corder Farmer of Wytheville, Va.; five sisters, Irene Hammons of Lancaster, Pa., Verna Heck of Deming, N.M., Beulah Payne of Cape Coral, Fla., Ruth Wilson of Exton, Pa., and Kitty Demain of Menisee, Calif.; and a brother, Robert Farmer of Bowie, Md.

Frederic H. Morehead

Frederic H. "Freddie" Morehead, 73, of Wytheville, Va. died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, in the Grayson Rehab Center.

A graveside memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 1, at 9 a.m. in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating.

He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va., and was a former employee of The Southwest Virginia Enterprise.

He is survived by a sister, Phyllis M. Umberger of Cripple Creek, Va.; a brother, Robert C. Morehead Jr. of St. George, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Wytheville Fire Department.

Charles Anderson Tweedy Sr.

Charles Anderson Tweedy Sr., 56, of the Grapefield community in Bland County, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. at Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va., with Pastor Jim Conley officiating. A private burial was held Saturday, Oct. 26, in Temple Hill cemetery, Bland, Va.

Born April 1, 1946, he was a lifelong resident of this area. He was a member of the Hollybrook Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa Tweedy; and his parents, William and Rosia Madeline Grant Tweedy.

Survivors include one son, Charles "Andy" Tweedy II of the home; three brothers and sisters-in-law, William "Bill" Tweedy of Tazewell, Va., Robert and Irene Tweedy of Taylorsville, N.C., and George and Margaret Tweedy of Spring Hill, Fla.; one sister, Margaret T. Gillespie of Tazewell, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland, Va., was in charge of the arrangements.

Dalton Lee Tolbert

Dalton Lee Tolbert, infant, of Rural Retreat, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in the Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, Va., with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn cemetery.

He is survived by his parents, Jodi Buck and Rodney Tolbert of Rural Retreat, Va.; maternal grandmother, Debbie Garrick of Marion, Va.; maternal grandparents, Joey and Trina Buck of Rural Retreat, Va.; paternal grandparents, Peggy and Dean Kimberlin of Saltville, Va., and Jake and Joanna Tolbert of Saltville, Va.; great-grandparents, Mildred and John Harris of Marion, Va., Madelyn Buck of Wytheville, Va., and Charles and Dorothy Ratcliff of Saltville, Va.; great-great-grandmother, Nannie Welch of Wytheville, Va.; special aunts, Jamie Garrick of Marion, Va., and Kendra Buck of Rural Retreat, Va.; a special uncle, Matthew Garrick of Marion, Va.; and many other relatives.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 7, from 10 to 11 a.m. (service time) at the funeral home.

Bernie P. Webb

Bernie P. Webb, 86, of Blountville, Tenn., died away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. in the Blountville Christian Church with Minister Dwight Shaffer and Minister Leland Houser officiating. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Poplar Ridge cemetery, Piney Flats, Tenn.

He was a native and lifelong resident of the Sullivan County, Tenn., area. He was a retired athletic director of the Sullivan County School System for over 54 years, serving there from 1948 until 1997. He was the former coach of Blountville High School and attended Milligan College and coached football for two years. He started Blountville Little League and Bernie Ball Park was named in his honor. He was executive secretary of the Appalachian Umpire League. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and he had received numerous awards. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II and was a member of the Blountville Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John David Webb and Mattie Smith Webb; one brother, Raymond Webb; and two sisters, Ruth Bullington and Lydia Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Evelyn Webb; four daughters, Cathy Harsch of Atlanta, Ga., Vicki Hubbs, Connie Jones and Patty Webb, all of Blountville, Tenn.; two sons, Scott Webb and David Webb, both of Blountville, Tenn.; one daughter-in-law, Latina Webb of Blountville, Tenn.; two sons-in-law, Willis Hubbs and David Jones, both of Blountville, Tenn.; one brother, Roy Webb of Johnson City, Tenn.; two sisters, Ruby Hart of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Gay Walker of Johnson City, Tenn.; five grandchildren and a spouse, Jennifer and Rodney Ramsey, Stephanie Snapp, Wesley Harsch, Matt Webb and Tiffany Webb; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Blountville Christian Church.

Geneva Mae Waller

Geneva Mae Waller, 87, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in the Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Forest United Methodist Church in Ivanhoe, Va. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Harry Thomas and Maude Wright Sawyers. She was a lifelong member of the Forest United Methodist Church and served many years as pianist.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Harry Waller; sister, Geraldine Sawyers; and brother, Marzelle Tony Sawyers.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Lester B. Waller of the home; son and daughters-in-law, Robert L. "Bob" and Susie Waller of Ivanhoe, Va., and Maxine Waller of Ivanhoe, Va.; four grandchildren and spouses, Leslie Waller, Tim and Treva Waller, Michael and Misty Waller, and Tiffany and Jerry Leicht; a stepgranddaughter and spouse, Rená and Richie Conner; two great-grandchildren, Josh Waller and Elizabeth Waller; two great-stepgrandchildren, Chase Conner and Ian Conner; and a sister, Juanita Rector of Galax, Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Forest United Methodist Church.

James W. Thompson

James W. "Jack" Thompson, 71, of Marion, N.C., died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, N.C., with the Rev. Sam Robinson and the Rev. Steve Durham officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army.

He was born June 10, 1931, in Bland County, Va., a son of the late Charles M. Thompson and Mary Repass Thompson. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired from both C.E. Air Preheater and Sara Lee Knit Products. He was a member of North Cove Baptist Church.

He is survived his wife, Mary Rozetta Stevens Thompson of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, James Timothy and Jennifer Thompson of Nebo, Va.; two granddaughters, Jordan and Hannah; three sisters, Helen Caldie of Hampton, Va., Gladys Faulk of Hampton, Va., and Letha Olson of Waverly, Va.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home.

Herbert A. McPhetridge

Herbert A. McPhetridge, 73, of Lawrenceville, Ga., died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Tim Stewart Funeral Home's Lawrenceville (Ga.) Chapel with the Rev. Dr. J. Cecil Riley officiating. Burial will be in the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

He was retired from Ingles Grocery Store with 59 years of service in the grocery industry and was a member of Grayson United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel McPhetridge, on Dec. 21, 2000.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Charles Lee McPhetridge of Marietta, Ga., Joseph and Sharon McPhetridge of Stockbridge, Ga., Regina and Ron Linkous of Bedford, Texas, and Susan Dianne McPhetridge of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sisters, Mildred Hopkins and Georgie Altom, both of Knoxville, Ga., and Betty Acuff of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tim Stewart Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, Ga.

Margie Irene Crigger Viars

Margie Irene Crigger Viars, 100, of Lots Gap Road, Max Meadows, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Lindamood and the Rev. James Black officiating. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., March 21, 1902, a daughter of the late Thomas and Ada Ryan Crigger. She was a member of the Ft. Chiswell United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben I. Viars; a son, John Cecil Viars; two daughters, Ruby Hopkins; an infant daughter; grandson, Phillip Viars; three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Maxine and Clark Dunford, and Frances and Jack Lawson, all of Max Meadows, Va.; five sons and daughters-in-law, Malcolm and Thelma Viars of Wytheville, Va., Howard and Christine Viars, Pete and Betty Viars, Charles and Charlotte Viars, and James and Phyllis Viars, all of Max Meadows, Va.; 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. (service time) at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence of Howard and Christine Viars or any of the children at any time.

Clifford Edward Payne

Clifford Edward Payne, 70, of the Little Creek section of Bland County, Va., died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Stanley Lester officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.

He was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Horse Creek, (McDowell County) W.Va. He was a retired coal miner, carpenter, and brick mason and was affiliated with the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Rural Retreat, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Edward and Virgie Ellen Wagner Payne; a grandson, Melvin Edward Mullins; a son-in-law, Oren S. Gray; and a sister, Etta Marie Moore.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Mazie" Kennedy Payne of the home; children and their spouses, Brenda and Bobby Mullins of Rural Retreat, Va., Priscilla and Stanley Lester of Hurley, Va., Sheba and Jimmy Payne of Little Creek section of Bland County, Va., Daria Gray of Wytheville, Va., and Clifford E.
