Edgar Early Smith Jr., 70, of High Point, N.C., died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Wesleyan Arms Nursing Home, High Point, N.C., following a brief illness.
A memorial service was held Monday, Nov. 4, at Cloverdale Baptist Church in High Point, N.C., with the Rev. Ralph Pruitt officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at Sanders cemetery in Wythe County, Va.
He was born in Wythe County, Va., on Sept. 24, 1932, a son of Edgar E. and Dessie Peak Smith. He was a carpenter and also worked for Hudson Roofing prior to his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edgar E. Smith; a stepfather, James R. "Tobe" Moore; and a brother, Charlie F. Moore.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Southern Smith of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Edgar E. III and Teresa Smith of High Point, N.C., Benjamin A. and Sylvia Smith of Asheboro, N.C., and Charles E. Smith of Stamford, Conn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Matilda and Mike Hendry of High Point, N.C.; his mother, Dessie Peak Smith Moore of Max Meadows, Va.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Juanita and Homer Stroupe of Max Meadows, Va., Matilda and Frank Astin of Max Meadows, Va., Nancy Wilson of Max Meadows, Va., and S. Maxine Waller of Ivanhoe, Va.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dewey Hensel Arnold, 78, of the Gunton Park community of Max Meadows, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Oscar "Sonny" Ayers and the Rev. Garrett Byrd officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites.
He was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Wythe County, Va. He attended the Gunton Park Church of God of Prophecy and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobert Pierce Arnold and Fannie Dean Arnold; two brothers, Fred Arnold and Homer Arnold.
Survivors includes his wife of 55 years, Mona Dobbins Arnold of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Pete Ayers of Max Meadows, Va., and Brenda Arnold of Dublin, Va.; three sons and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Kindle and Gladys Arnold of Dublin, Va., Douglas Arnold of Max Meadows, Va., and Allen Arnold of Kalamazoo, Mich.; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Zelma McCandless, Dammie and Doug Covey, Katherine and Jack Ray, Cleo and Woody Dunford, and Donna Sprinkler, all of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother and two sisters-in-law, Bert and Jeannie Arnold of Kearney, Neb., and Mina Dobbins Arnold of Max Meadows, Va.; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charles R. Hagan
Charles R. "Charlie" Hagan, 72, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Bastian, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at his residence from cancer.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. at the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home in Oregon, Ohio with Pastor Daniel Ellis officiating.
He was born in Roanoke, Va., on April 8, 1930, to Oscar C. and Opal Rowland Hagan. He served in the Army before moving to Toledo, Ohio. He worked on the lakes for 18 years, retiring in 1993 from the Oglebay Norton Line. After retiring, he worked for the BP service stations most recently at Navarre & Coy Road.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Diane; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Jennifer Hagan, and Greg and Tammy Hagan; eight grandchildren, Anthony, Janette, Marissa, Nathaniel, Justin, Brittney, Samantha and Kristina; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Bernard and Louise Hagan, Paul Hagan, and Lawrence Hagan of Virginia; eight sisters and brothers-in-law, Dora Pritchard, Carol and Will Pauley, both of Virginia, Beulah Pritchett, Ruby and Mack Estep, both of West Virginia, Jean Gore and Barbara Wilson, both of Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Betty Hagan of Virginia.
The family will receive friends Friday, Nov. 29, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home in Oregon, Ohio.

Cecil Jay Hall, infant, of Barren Springs, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Sanders cemetery.
He is survived by his parents, Miranda Christina Barnes and Ronnie Wayne Hall, of Barren Springs, Va.; one sister, Caitlin Marie Quesenberry; one brother, Jesse Wayne Hall; one half-sister, Carol Ann Barnes; one half-brother, Michael Lee Barnes; maternal grandparents, Donald and Tina Quesenberry; maternal great-grandparents, Donald and Betty Quesenberry; great-great-grandparents, Robert and Pearl Cassell; and two uncles and an aunt, Donny Quesenberry, and Jay and Jennifer Hall.

Ruth Irene Durham Lindamood, 89, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Norman Wilhoit officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
She was born March 8, 1913, in Stokes County, N.C., a daughter of the late Joseph Manuel Durham and Mary Alma Cardwell Durham. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Andrew Lindamood Jr.; a brother, Otis Durham; and two sisters, Hallie Simmons and Ina Slawter.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy A. Lindamood; three sisters, Rachel Hunter of Greensboro, N.C., Ethel Collins and Alma George, both of Westfield, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Carrie Caulder Muncy, 77, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 in the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, N.C., with Dr. J. Ernest Johnson and the Rev. Leighton McKeithen officiating. Interment was in LaFayette Memorial Park, Fayetteville, N.C.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Peery Muncy of the home; a son, Vance Lee Muncy of Hickory, N.C.; one niece, Susie Becker of St. Paul's, N.C.; and one grandchild, Justice Hope Muncy of Vale, N.C.

Barbara Kester Reed, 89, of Martinsville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at her residence.

She was born Jan. 21, 1913, in Middlesburg, Ky. She attended First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Buckfus Kester and Nora Clarke Kester; a daughter, Barbara R. Kilian; a brother Julian B. Kester.

Harold Harman of Aiken, S.C., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002.

He was a 1952 graduate of George Wythe High School.
He is survived by his wife, Dixie; one son, David Michael Harman of Aiken, S.C.; one daughter, Brenda Smith of Simpsonville, S.C.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was born in Smyth County, Va., a daughter of the late John Wesley and Nancy Pennington Haga. She was a member of the Bastian Union Church, Bastian, Va.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Banner Pennington, four sisters and one brother.

Alene Nicewonder Stowers, 72, of Bland, Va., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, in Kegley Manor, Bastian, Va.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Bland County, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will be in the Stowers cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Bland, Va., a daughter of the late Andrew and Lilia Thompson Nicewonder. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, was a 4-H All Star and active in the community.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Nicewonder Jr.

He was born in Big Stone Gap, Va., a son of the late Aubrey and Lydia Chaffin Thompson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Douglas Thompson.
