Henry Carter Stroupe, 87, of Stroupe Mountain Road, Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.C. McPeak and the Rev. Jack Rutherford officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosenbaum Chapel cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, Va. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant with 30 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Minnie Bateman Stroupe; four brothers, Herman Stroupe, Carl Stroupe, Sidney Stroupe and Clifton "Duck" Stroupe; and two sisters, Mary Jones and Hazel Dillow.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Esther Nuckolls Stroupe of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Edna and Robert Primm of Wytheville, Va., and Peggy and Page Tucker of Fries, Va.; four grandchildren, Bobby Primm, Carole Edwards, Stephen Primm and Lisa Worrell; five great-grandchildren, Jessica, Eddie, Amanda, Danny and Brandon; two sisters, Bertha Harrell of Ararat, Va., and Glady Mabe of Marion, Va.; one brother, Sanders Stroupe of Galax, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Marvin Lewis Hayton, 76, of Speedwell, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Doug Stuart and the Rev. Scott Adkins. Interment will be in the Groseclose Chapel cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military graveside rites.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and he was retired from the American Screw Company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James C. and Nina Williams Hayton.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Whalen Hayton of Speedwell, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Daryl and Barb Hayton of Speedwell, Va.; brothers and sister-in-law, Thomas Andrew and Betty Hayton of Marion, Va., and James Cleveland Hayton Jr. of Ceres, Va.; sister-in-law, Felicia Hayton of Ceres, Va.; grandchildren, Ashley Hayton, Mikey Auxer, both of Speedwell, Va., and Brian Schmitt of Pennsylvania.

Robert Cecil Holston, 82, of Max Meadows, Va., died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Bolen officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct the military rites.
He was a retired section foreman with Norfolk & Western Railroad and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peyton M. and Rose Thacker Holston; and three brothers, Carl L. Holston, Sanders M. Holston and Ralph E. Holston.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jean Pope Holston of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet H. and John M. Dew III of Montpelier, Va.; two granddaughters, Holly Catherine Dew and Ellen Randolph Dew; a brother and sister-in-law, Walter Peyton and Barbara Holston of Danville, Va.; three brothers-in-law, William E. Pope of Windsor, Va., John J. Pope of Christiansburg, Va., and Thomas J. Pope of Pulaski, Va.; a very special friend, Tom Lester of Martinsville, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Viola "Ola" Poole Hurd, 77, of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Oscar "Sonny" Ayers officiating. Interment will be in the Bethany cemetery, Poplar Camp section of Wythe County, Va.
She was born in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Charles Eugene and Ada Dean Poole. She was a member of Jackson Chapel Church of God of Prophecy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Garfield Hurd Jr.; and one brother, Dave Poole.
Survivors include one son, Thomas W. "Tom" Jones of Austinville, Va.; one daughter, Annette Robertson of Wytheville, Va.; four grandchildren and spouses, Tracey Jones, Casey and Laura Jones, Ben and Stacy Cannon, and Jennifer Robertson; one great-grandchild, Audrey Kate Jones; and two sisters and brother-in-law, Mildred Eversole of Austinville, Va., and Kathryn and Jake Horney of Wytheville, Va.

Elmer Shell "Bub" Stuart, 72, of Ceres, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, Va., with the Rev. Tom Oliphant and Pastor Jim Conley officiating. Interment will be private.
He was born Oct. 27, 1930, at Mechanicsburg, Va., a son of the late Ed and Reba Melvin Stuart. He was a past governor of the Ceres Ruritan Club and a member of the Mechanicsburg Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Dare Neel Stuart of Ceres, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Tamela Stuart of Mechanicsburg, Va.; a daughter, Judi K. Stuart of Mechanicsville, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Clara Stuart of Ashland, Va.; a sister, Nell S. Morehead of Mechanicsburg, Va.; a sister-in-law, Shirley M. Repass of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren, Hunter Stuart, Kendell Stuart and Sarah Wellford; and several nieces and nephews.

Hiram Peyton Frye, 83, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 16, at 1 p.m. in the Evergreen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Carbary and Shermon Dixon officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Church cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military graveside rites. The body will be placed in the church one hour before service time.
He was the son of the late Hiram D. and Mollie Houseman Frye. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of the Evergreen United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Grubb Frye.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Foye and Peggy Frye of Marion, Va.; a sister, Clara Catron of Wytheville, Va.; a grandson, Billy Frye of Herndon, Va.; special nephew, Chalmer Frye of Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law.

Christiver Vernon Marrs Sr., 31, of Newhall, W.Va., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Berwind Revival Center with the Rev. Kathleen Stanley and the Rev. Brenda Blankenship officiating. Burial will be in Horsepen Church of Christ cemetery, Horsepen, Va.
He was born April 12, 1971 in Welch, W.Va. He was a printer for Phoenix Sports and Advertising in Tazewell, Va. He was formerly employed at Kentucky Derby Hosiery in Wytheville, Va., for a number of years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cloyd Vernon Marrs.
Survivors include his wife, Tonya Renee Marrs of the home; one son, Christiver Vernon "C.J." She was born in Smyth County, Va., a daughter of the late Robert Newton and Arra Rada Leedy Lindamood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude R. Arnold; two sons, Claude R. Arnold Jr. and James Thomas Arnold; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, June and Elmer Dunford of Rural Retreat, Va., Blanche and Harold Perry of Montpelier, Ind., Mary Garcia of Craigville, Ind., Rose Marie Dean of the home, and Nancy and Donald Dunford of Rural Retreat, Va.; three sons and daughters-in-law, John Robert and Kathleen Arnold, Curtis Everett and Brenda Arnold, all of Wytheville, Va., and Paul Moore Arnold of the home; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Arnold of Austinville, Va.; two sisters, Edna Crigger of Wytheville, Va., and Ollie Richardson of Louisiana; one brother, Luther L. John P. Baumgardner
John P. "Jack" Baumgardner, 78, of Wytheville, Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002.
A Masonic memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 19, at 8:30 p.m. by the Wytheville Fraternal Lodge No. 82, A.F. & A.M. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church with the Rev. Wade D. Tucker Sr. and the Rev. W. Wesley Huff officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville.
He was born Sept. 30, 1924, in Roanoke, Va., a son of the late Walter H. and Lillian McGrady Baumgardner.
He was a graduate of Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance and the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, attaining the rank of 2nd lieutenant in the infantry. He opened his optometry office in Wytheville, Va., in March of 1950 and retired from the program in 1991.
A member of the Virginia Optometric Association for 42 years, he served as its president. He was a member and past secretary of the Virginia Board of Optometry and was selected as Virginia Optometrist of the Year in 1992.
He was chairman and member of the Joint Industrial Authority of Wythe County, Wytheville, Va. and Rural Retreat, Va. He was the Virginia Southern Industrial Development Council’s Volunteer of the Year for 1989.
He also was a past member of the Wytheville Town Council and served as vice mayor; past director of the Wytheville Recreation Commission; past member of the board of directors of the Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce; past master of Wytheville Fraternal Lodge No. 82; honorary member of the Wytheville Fraternal Lodge No. 82, the Ivanhoe Lodge No. 235, Bland Lodge No. 206 and the Mt. Airy Lodge No. 226; a member of the Grand Lodge Committee on Work; member of the Wythe Royal Arch Chapter; a member of the Lynn Commandry in Marion, Va.; a Shriner with the Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Va.; a member of the New River Shrine Club; a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in Roanoke, Va.; a member of the Character Unit of Kazim; a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church where he was a deacon and secretary of the Sunday school; a trustee at Oak Hill Academy; and a former member of the Wytheville Lions Club.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Dencer King.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Margaret Hicks Baumgardner of Wytheville, Va.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Keith Baumgardner of Greensboro, N.C., and Jerry and Jane Crawford Baumgardner of Lancaster, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Kathryn, Sarah, William and John.
