Gladys Beatrice Nuckols
Gladys Beatrice "Sammy" Nuckols, 86, of Pearisburg, formerly of Buena Vista, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg after a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral service were held Saturday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church in Buena Vista with the Rev. Jason Michell officiating. Interment was in the Green Hill cemetery.
She was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Buena Vista, a daughter of the late C. Ollie and Annie Noell Nuckols. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church where she served in the church nursery for over 41 years and was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Women. She retired from Knight's General Store in 1988 after 52 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde E. Nuckols.
Survivors include two nieces and a nephew-in-law, Jeanne N. Snow of Wytheville, Carole N. and Mike Johnston of Pearisburg; a great-niece and great-nephew-in-law, Michele J. and Grant Clarke of Raleigh, N.C.; and a great-nephew, Andy Johnston of Pearisburg.

Susie Emeline Arnold Schisler, 53, of Max Meadows died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at the Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 16, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. A.C. Ashford and the Rev. Rick Beam officiating. Interment was in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her father, Pete Arnold; and two brothers, Andrew Anthony Dunford and Tony Ray Dunford.
Survivors include her husband, Russell W. Schisler of the home; one son, Gary Grubb Jr. of the Fort Chiswell community; her mother, Maggie Ashford King of Ivanhoe; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Ricky Mabe of Max Meadows, Joann and Bobby J. Clayburn of Fries, Martha and "Nink" Corvin of Wytheville, Nannie Mae Dunford and Eleanor and Chris Mabry, both of Ivanhoe, and Delores Arnold, formerly of Fries; three brothers, Charles R. "Hob" Dunford of Austinville, Carlos Arnold and Guy Arnold, both of Galax; one stepdaughter, Sheryl Dutton; one stepson, Charles Spain Jr.; a special friend, Margaret Lawson of Barren Springs; and several other relatives.

Mary Lou Mustard Totten, 81, of Vinton died Friday, July 11, 2003, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, at 1 p.m. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home in White Gate with Pastor Susan Reaves officiating. Interment was in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
She was born Sept. 9, 1921, a daughter of the late King H. and Zozo Dixon Mustard. She was a member of Mays Memorial United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jane Mustard.
Survivors include her husband, William L. Totten II; one son and daughter-in-law, William L. III and Kay Totten of Vinton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa Totten of Richmond, Karen and Vance Cox of Marietta, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Evan Lyons, Jessica Greenholtz and Helen Cox.

Betty Zane McGuire Vest, 75, of the White Gate community in Pearisburg died Friday, July 11, 2003, at New River Valley Medical Center, Radford.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate, with the Rev. Donald White and the Rev. Tom Oliphant officiating. Interment was in the Stinson cemetery, White Gate.
She was born May 25, 1928, at Mechanicsburg, a daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Flora Harman McGuire. She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Calvin Vest; a brother, Harry Thomas McGuire; and a sister, Gay Jeanette Kelley.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Iris and Alan Strock of Bland, Karen MacDonald of Radford; three grandchildren and spouses, David "Bronco" Strock of Bland, Julie and Chad Porter of Max Meadows, and Wesley and Elizabeth Strock of Bland; three great-grandchildren, Logan Porter, Erin Porter and Adriauna Strock; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Keith and Juanita McGuire of Pearisburg, and Cathern McGuire of Bland; and several special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

George William Wampler, 82, of Wytheville died Saturday, July 12, 2003, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville.

He was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Wythe County, a son of the late Ernest and Josephine Austin Wampler. He was a former employee of Greenlawn Classics in Wytheville.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie D. Wampler of Wytheville; a daughter, Joan Carolyn Wampler of Wytheville; two sisters, Alberta Wampler of Wytheville and Helen Reed of Vinton; a brother, Jack Wampler of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and special friends, Virginia Arnold of the West Piney community of Wythe County, and Selma Fletchall of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Peacock Grinstead Wassum, 90, died Saturday, July 12, 2003 in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion.
Funeral services were held Sunday evening, July 13, at the Seaver-Brown Chapel in Marion with the Rev. Mark Totten and the Rev. David Neitch officiating. Graveside service was held Monday, July 14, at the Rose Lawn cemetery.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Arthur McDonald Grinstead and Thomas F. Wassum; and a son Kenneth C. Grinstead.
She was a nurse in Smyth County for many years, having worked at Lee Memorial, Marion General, Smyth County Community Hospital, and Southwestern State Hospital, where she retired. She was a member of South Fork Baptist Church and the senior bowling league.
She is survived by one daughter, Betty C. Vaught of Wytheville; one son and two daughters-in-law, Mack and Dottie Grinstead and Betty F. Grinstead, all of Marion; three granddaughters, Beverly Wymer, Becky Pierce and Charlene G. Cassel; one grandson, Donald W. Vaught; eight great-grandchildren, Shannon Deichman, Aaron C. Lowe, Whittney A., Ashley, and Kelley Pierce, Anna Lee, Ryan and Amanda Wymer; and one great-great-grandson, Michael Deichman.

Lula Campbell Findlay Peck, 83, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Asbury Place, Wytheville, Va.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 10, at 4 p.m. at the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport, Tenn. with Pastor Richard K. Dice officiating.
She was born Feb. 11, 1920, in Wytheville, a daughter of the late. She was raised by her grandmother, Kate Spiller Campbell, and aunt, Eulalia Campbell in Nashville, Tenn. She and her late husband lived in Kingsport, Tenn., where she was active in the Holston Valley Auxiliary, Girl Scouts, the Salvation Army, Girl Guards and the Civil Air Patrol. She worshipped at the King’s Highway Temple.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Glenn Peck; parents, Frank S. Findlay Sr. and Lula Bell Campbell Findlay; three brothers, Frank S. Findlay Jr., John Campbell Findlay, and Father Harris M. Findlay.
Survivors include her niece and spouse, Kathryn "Ty" Findlay Roop and Wayne Roop of Wytheville, Va.; a great-niece, Mia Roop; and a two great-nephews and a spouse, Che Roop, and Kevin and Helen Roop; three stepsisters, Louise Findlay Smith, Mildred Little and Janet Derting; sisters-in-law, Virginia Boettger and Betty Trubey; and four cousins, Tom Findlay, Jean Gorman, Laura Bassett and Linda Meadows; a foster daughter and her family, DeRhonda Williams, Walter and Julie Williams, Melissa Tester, Larry Tester, Janice Tester, and Jamie Tester; and a foster son and his wife, Roy and Carolyn Kaye.

He was born in Greensboro, N.C. on May 10, 1951, a son of Thomas A. and Murell Ferguson Spraker.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He attended the Mt. View United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Brunk Hoback; and his parents, Arthur and Carrie Robinson Hoback.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Eddie Manuel of Wytheville, Va., Barbara and Charles Richey of Max Meadows, Va., and Beverly Hoback of Wytheville, Va.; two sons, Fred E.
