Thurleen Beatta Hounshell Dillow, 71, of Bland, Va., died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, in the New River Valley Medical Center, Radford, Va.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. in the Highland Funeral Service Bland Chapel, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will be in the Bland cemetery, Bland, Va.
She was born Aug. 12, 1932, in Bland County, Va.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Estle B. and Mary Harden Hounshell; a granddaughter, Sharla Hope Painter; a sister, Mary Newberry; and two brothers, E.B. Hounshell and Elmo Hounshell.
Survivors include her husband, Gilmer W. "Buck" Dillow of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Libby and Calvin Weddle of Bland, Va., Fran and Steve Painter of Cripple Creek, Va., Barbara and David Morehead of Bland, Va., and Pam and Dale "Bubzy" Jones of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren, Justin Morehead, Mandi Morehead and Joshua Painter; three stepgrandchildren, Corey Jones, Casey Jones and Samantha Davis; one great-stepgrandchild, Adrianna Davis; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dixie Warner, Gladys and Sam Ray Kitts, and Nedde and Doug Gordon, all of Bland, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Arvel James Newberry, 75, of Speedwell, Va., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service will be held Monday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with Elder Terry Wilson and Elder Curtis Hash officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
He was born June 24, 1928, in Richlands, Va. He was a retired miner with the UMWA and a retired mine inspector with the state of Virginia. He was a member of the Peach Bottom Primitive Baptist Church in Grayson County, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart and Ethel Palmer Newberry; and a son, Larry James Newberry.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Arnold Newberry of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Darlene Newberry, and Allen Newberry, all of Raven, Va.; one sister, Frances Dye of Tazewell, Va.; one brother, Mervin Newberry of Lynchburg, Va.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Eula Martha Umberger Orfield, 90, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, in Asbury Place at Wytheville, Va.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Ronald E. Umberger officiating. Interment will be in West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
She was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Wythe County, Va. She was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Orfield; her parents, Stuart R. and Minnie Bowles Umberger; four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Mark Babcock of Wytheville, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles R. and Aileen Crigger of Pulaski, Va.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Don and Imogene Orfield of Wytheville, Va.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Wright Rash, 82, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003, at the Methodist Medical Center.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m., at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Aldana Allen and the Rev. Charles Mattson officiating.
She was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Landgraff, W.Va., a daughter of the late Sidney Clarence and Mary Myrtle Spraker Wright. She worked for many years as a clerk at Jefferson Drug Store. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Order of The Eastern Star No. 390, Oak Ridge, Tenn. She enjoyed fishing and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Juan Rash Sr. on Oct. 14, 2003; a son, Howard Juan Rash Jr. on Jan. 4, 2001; and two brothers, J.B. Wright and John Wright.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Joe Fowler of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene Matthews, Angie Reynolds, Katherine McRoberts, Betty and Frank Ashford, Josephine and Thomas Dalton, and Janice and Julian Horton, and all of Wytheville, Va.; grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff and Trista Fowler of Bay Beach, Fla., Jodi and Danny Henderson of Hampton, Ga., Jacquelyn Fowler, and Clint and Teri Rash, all of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Brooklin Fowler, Tucker Fowler, Dawson Fowler, Holton Fowler, Danielle Henderson, Billy Henderson, Eric Rash, Jared Rash, and Bradley Rash; and many nieces and nephews.

George Eli Rider, 83, of Holly Hill, Fla., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Halifax Medical Center, Daytona, Fla.
A memorial service was held Monday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. at Daytona Funeral Home in Daytona Beach, Fla., with the Rev. Bob Kicklighter officiating.
He was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Wytheville, Va., and moved to the Daytona, Fla., area in 1979. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Club and Unitarian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Isaac and Bessie Hardin Rider; five brothers and one sister.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Joan R. and Don Goddeau of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Ginger R. Maisto of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one son, Frank E. Rider of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Nannie R. Alderman of Wytheville, Va.; one brother, Richard C. Rider of Lynch Station, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Willie Rider, Isabelle C. Rider and Freda T. Leon M. Umberger, 74, of Wytheville, Va., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Kevin Fiorini. Interment will be in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.
He was retired from the Wytheville Livestock Market and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney A. and Neta Rakes Umberger; and a brother, Richard Allen Umberger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Tedder; her parents, Oscar Davis King and Lilly Sutphin King; a sister, Louise King; and five brothers, Luther King, Oscar King Jr., Alfred King, Donald King and Carlton King.

He was born Oct. 1, 1922, in McDowell County, W.Va. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Irene Collins Reynolds; and a brother, Albert Reynolds.

Carolyn Sue Aker, 55, of Piney Mountain Road, Wytheville, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, in the New River Valley Medical Center, Radford, Va.
Funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ted Anders officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born Aug. 1, 1948, in Wythe County, Va. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, a former employee of the Virginia Co-Operative Extension Office and former member of the Southwest Virginia Secretarial Association.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Joseph and Virginia Kinder Aker; and a sister, Rita Aker Midkiff.
Survivors include three sisters, Frankie Arnold of Salem, Va., Joyce Moore and Wilma Aker, both of Wytheville, Va.; one brother, Ralph J. Aker Jr. of Wytheville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
