Junius Charles "Cecil" "Shorty" East, 76, of Draper, Va., died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, in the Pulaski Community Hospital, Pulaski, Va.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel in Pulaski, Va., with the Rev. Garnie East Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, Max Meadows, Va.
He was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Snowville, Va. He was employed in the furniture industry for 43 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert and Mamie East Burcham; and a daughter, Sharon Lynn East.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Alan East and Robin East, both of Dublin, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Jeanine and Ralph Christian of Draper, Va.; a companion of 31 years, Elizabeth A. Martin of Draper, Va.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Garnie L. Sr. and Evelyn East of the Graham's Forge community of Wythe County, Va., and James R. Jr. and Enola Burcham of Dublin, Va.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary B. and Clarence Chinault of Dublin, Va., Bessie B. and Jimmy Tickle of Draper, Va., and Gerri and Sam Collins of Wytheville, Va.; three grandchildren, two great-children, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Monday, Dec. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel or anytime at the home of his daughter on Pine Run Road, Draper, Va.

William Arnold Hatcher, 65, of Dunns, W.Va., died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at his home.
Funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 1 p.m., at the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory at Princeton, W.Va., with the Rev. Ralph Calfee officiating. Burial was in the Ellison Family cemetery, Dunns, W.Va.
He recently retired. He had worked as a heavy equipment operator in the coal mines and for Industrial Plating and Machine in Princeton, W.Va. He was a member of the Mountain Creek Baptist Church, Dunns, W.Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William P. and Mahulda Johnston Hatcher; and a brother.
Survivors include his wife, Athlene Ellison Hatcher; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lindell Arland and Nancy Hatcher of Dunns, W.Va. and Bland, Va., Larry Kevin and Valerie Hatcher of Bland, Va., and Daryl Ray and Tabitha Hatcher of Dunns, Va.; three grandchildren, Gregory Arland Hatcher and Corey Justin Hatcher, both of Dunns, W.Va., and Amy Lynn Hatcher of Bland, Va.; four brothers, Rudolph Hatcher of Beckley, W.Va., Douglas Hatcher of Flat Top, W.Va., Vernoia Hatcher of Cool Ridge, W.Va., and O.D. Clifford C. Kincer, 93, of Apopka, Fla., formerly of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, Va. Interment will be in the West End cemetery, Wytheville, Va.
He was a retired coal miner and farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecil Rosenbaum Kincer.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Stephen G. “Cicero” Frye of Wytheville, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Corina Kincer of Apopka, Fla.; special friend, Ennis Akers; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Gladie Lucille Stroupe Mabe, 68, of Wytheville, Va., died Saturday Nov. 29, 2003 in the Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, Va.

Carlos Fred Melton, 76, of the Gunton Park community of Max Meadows, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, at the home of his son.

He was born May 8, 1927, in Wythe County, Va. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, was a Wythe County farmer for 50 years, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Minnie Felts Melton; two brothers, Gordon Melton and James Melton; four sisters, Mae Melton, Myrtle Edwards, Ila Smith and Margarite Duncan; a son, Gerald Melton; and his first wife, Marie Melton.
Survivors include his second wife, Elizabeth Melton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharlene and Buford Goins; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Carolyn Melton; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Ben and Wanda Linkous; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Melton; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Becky Melton; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Gladys Frandsen, Grace Melton, and Pauline and Cecil Breedlove; six grandchildren, Michael Melton Jr., Lorri Atwell, Bart Melton, Denise King, Eric Melton and Adam Linkous; seven great-grandchildren, Leia Atwell, Brett Atwell, Carter King, Parker King, Austin Melton, Mason Melton and Allison Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna King Musser; his second wife, Dorothy Stoots Musser; three brothers, John Robert Musser, William Franklin Musser and Ernest Lee Musser; two sisters, Stelle Mae Holston and Josie Dale Havens; a special niece, Carolyn Kitts Seabolt; and a stepdaughter, Frances Powell.

Daisy Mae Quesenberry Sutphin, 73, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Wythe County, Va., died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at her son's home in Richmond, Va.
A graveside memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. at the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, Max Meadows, Va.
She was born Jan. 27, 1930, in Wythe County, Va., a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Maude Gravley Quesenberry.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Quesenberry of North Carolina, Dewey Quesenberry of Ohio and Ronnie Quesenberry of Max Meadows, Va.

Steven Douglas Hawks, 48, of Tobaccoville, N.C., died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, in an automobile accident.
Funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the River of Life Family Ministries Church, Poplar Camp, Va., with the Rev. Perry Hawks officiating. Interment will be in the Bethany cemetery at Poplar Camp, Va.
He was a 1973 graduate of Fort Chiswell High school.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, A.R. and Annabelle Bratton, W.R. and Desta Gilbert Hawks; and a sister, Dana Hawks Jackson.

She was born July 26, 1938, in Princeton, W.Va., a daughter of the late Clarence Dedrick Lilly and Ruth Anita Caudill Lilly. She was a former employee of Heilig-Meyers Furniture Company and was a member of the Wytheville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Walter Lilly; and a special grandchild, Joseph Nathanael "Little Nate" Gordon.
Survivors include her husband, Donald C. Mitchell Sr.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Johnny Brewer of Wytheville, Va., and Donna Mae and Tony Andrews of Pulaski, Va.; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald C. Charles Alfred Pilson, 66, of Stuart, Va., died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at the R.J. Reynolds Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart, Va.
Funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Buffalo Ridge Pentecostal Holiness Church with Barry Pilson and Archie Morgan officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
He was born Oct. 20, 1937, in Patrick County, Va. He served in the United States Air Force, was a former supervisor at J.P. Stevens and was retired from the Masonite Corporation.
He was preceded in death by his former wife, Annie Ruth Wagoner Pilson; parents, Dallas Valentine Pilson and Alpha Alice Morrison Pilson; two brothers, Edward Pilson and Wayne Pilson; and a stepson, William Pilson.
