Margie Mae Hash
Mrs. Margie Mae Hash, age 77, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 23, 2006 in Grace Health Care.
Mrs. Hash was born October 26, 1928 to the late John B. and Abbie H. Smith McAfee in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Hash was a retired bookkeeper for Giant Foods. Mrs. Hash attended the Gospel Tabernacle Church.
Mrs. Hash is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Donald F. McAfee and John H. McAfee.
Mrs. Hash is survived by her husband of fifty-eight years, E. Robert Hash, two daughters, Marsha Lavelle and husband, Patrick of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Sandra Knox and husband Richard of Merrit Island, Florida; one sister, Mary A. Hash and husband, James Orvel Hash of Meadowview. Three grandchildren, Leslie Hatfield of Statesville, North Carolina, Valerie Meyers of Merritt Island, Florida, and Kelly Lewis of Crofton, Maryland, one great-granddaughter, Alexandria Lewis of Crofton, Maryland. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 27, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Tim Norris officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 26, 2006 from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
Raymond Woodrow Wilson
Mr. Raymond Woodrow Wilson, 81, passed away on July 25, 2006 at the Sunbridge-Hillside Rehabilitation Center/Nursing Home in Kingsport, TN. Mr. Wilson was a longtime resident of Bristol, Virginia where he was employed by Appalachian Oil of Abingdon, VA and Kingsport Oil for more than 40 years. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy having served in World War II.
Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his wife, Christine in 2001. At her passing, they had been married
57 years.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his six children, four daughters and two sons; Linda Childress and husband Leonard, Bristol, VA, Phyllis Price and husband Jim, Bristol, TN, Barbara Fields, Jefferson City, Missouri, Bonnie Frazier and husband Freddie “Tommy”, Bristol, VA, Raymond Lee Wilson and wife Amy, Bristol, VA, and Ricky Wayne Wilson of Bluff City, TN.
Mr. Wilson was a loving, proud “Papaw” to his nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren; Lisa Childress and Kristi Gose both of Bristol, VA, Amanda Fields, Pittsburgh, PA, Karen Lingerfelt, Newton, NC, Sara Fields, Alexandria, VA, Jarrod Wilson, Bristol, VA, Natalie Wilson, Blacksburg, VA, Kelsey Wilson and Cody Wilson both of Bluff City, TN. His great-grandchildren, Kinsey Gose and Hunter Gose both of Bristol, VA Gracie and Sydni Lingerfelt both of Newton, NC and Destinee Childress of Bristol, VA. He is also survived by one brother and three sisters, two step-grandchildren, Melanie Hatcher and Justin Price and many friends.
The graveside service will be conducted Thursday, July 27, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Mr. Bill Haywood officiating. Interment will follow.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 27, 2006 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA or anytime at the home at 21116 Battle Hill Drive, Bristol, VA.

Mr. Wilson was a kind man and was loved by everyone who knew him. His sense of humor touched all. His family wishes to thank the employees of the Sunbridge/Hillside for their care during the last four years. A special thank you to the employees of the 100 and 200 wing for their kindness, laughter and special attention he received from them during his time there.
Glennamae Miller Roark
Glennamae Miller Roark, age 62, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at her home.
Glennamae was born on December 28, 1943 in Alabama and was a daughter of the late Glenn Houston Miller and Olive Christine Swenson Miller. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Gary Leland Miller. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Glennamae had worked at Harwood Manufacturing Company for 10 years. She had worked at Bristol Compressors for 14 years before her retirement. She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her son, Kevin Leland Roark of Abingdon; her daughter, Tina Lorraine Roark and fiancé Forrest Henry Keen both of Abingdon and her grandchildren, Kayla Lorraine Roark and Kristen Nicole Warner.
A memorial service for Glennamae Miller Roark will be conducted at 6:00 P. M., Friday, July 28, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Clifford Roark, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends until 9:00 P. M. Friday, immediately following the memorial service.
Ernest Lee Surber
Mr. Ernest Lee Surber, age 69, a life long Washington County, Virginia native, passed away Tuesday July 25, 2006 in Johnston Memorial Hospital after fighting a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Surber was preceded in death by his parents James Edward Surber and Dixie McCray Surber.
Mr. Surber was a long time member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church in Abingdon, Virginia. He retired from Pittston Coal Company after many years of service and later served his community as a deputy for the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.
Mr. Surber is survived by his loving wife of forty-eight years Kathryn Little Surber, one daughter, Angela Surber Osborne and husband, Henry C. Osborne, Jr. of Glade Spring, Virginia; one dear grandson, H. Andrew Osborne and wife Nicole Getman Osborne of Meadowview, one dear granddaughter, Katie Lee Osborne of Glade Spring; one precious great-granddaughter Emma Grace Osborne. Other survivors include one sister, Carolyn Surber Hudson of Abingdon; one brother Fredrick Surber and wife Ann of Damascus; one brother, Ronald Surber and wife Jeanette of McEwen, Tennessee; on sister-in-law, Eileen Dye and husband Charles of Kingsport, Tennessee, and one sister-in-law, Mildred Henderson of Abingdon. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, July 28, 2006 in Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Jack Sprinkle officiating. Everyone wishing to attend is asked to assemble at the funeral home by 12:45 P.M. to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will revive friends in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service Thursday, July 27, 2006 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Eddie Mullins
Mr. Eddie Mullins age 54 passed away Friday, July 28, 2006 in the Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, TN. Eddie had lived most of his life in Washington County, VA and had lived in Sullivan County, TN for the past fifteen years. He was employed by Harold’s Easy Livin Homes as sales manager.
Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Nellie Gobble Mullins and a brother, George Mullins.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Owens Mullins, Bluff City, TN, his son, James Hurd, Jr., Bristol, VA, his daughter, Brandy Bouton, Bristol, TN, his brother Frank Mullins, Abingdon, VA, grandchildren, Brittany Dawn Hurd, Logan Justice Hurd, James Cory Austin Hurd, Jacob Ray Bouton.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, July 31, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Funeral Service with Brother Ken Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Charlotte Browning Jones
Charlotte Browning Jones loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother age 67 of Chilhowie, Virginia formerly of Meadowview, Virginia and Jonesville, Virginia passed away Sunday, July 30, 2006 at the Smyth County Community Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ben A. Jones, Sr.; oldest son, Ben A. Jones, Jr.; her parents, Erwin Cecil and Juanita Browning of Meadowview and younger brother, David Browning also of Meadowview.
Charlotte was a retired LPN having previously worked at Heritage Hall in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and Bristol Nursing Home on Bristol, Virginia.
Charlotte is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William Jeff and Freda Jones; grandchildren, Ben Earl Jeffrey Jones and Ashley Nichole Jones all of Chilhowie; brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Beverly Browning of Bluefield; sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Nancy Rice of Johnson City, Tennessee
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Donald Watson Kelly, Jr.
Mr. Donald Watson Kelly, Jr., age 52, died Monday, July 31, 2006 at his home. Donnie was born on April 29, 1954 in Washington County and was a son of the late Donald Watson Kelly and Nellie Jean McCall Kelly. He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran and had worked for the Coca Cola Company of Bristol.
Survivors include his daughter, Deseray Dawn Kelly of Hayter’s Gap, VA; his two sons, Donnie Lee Kelly and his fiancé Tesa Carter of Bristol, VA and Darren Michael Kelly of Hayter’s Gap, VA; his sister, Brenda Compton and her husband Gary of Bristol, VA; his grandchildren, Miranda Kelly and Breanna Kelly and his niece and nephew, Renata Compton and Travis Compton.
The funeral service for Donald Watson Kelly, Jr. will be conducted at 1:00 P. M., Friday, August 4, 2006 at the graveside in Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Clarke Powers officiating. Military Graveside rites will be provided by the Highlands Fellowship Church Honor Color Guard. Interment will follow. Katherine Shutters
Katherine Vespa Shutters, age 86. died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Katherine was born in West Virginia and was a daughter of the late Frank Vespa and Elizabeth Lipford Vespa. She was also preceded in death by her husband Howard.
Survivors include her son Dennis D. Shutters of Concord, NC; two daughters, Joan Elaine Futrell of Bristol, VA and Judith S. Price of Lebanon, VA; 19 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.
The funeral service for Katherine V. Shutters will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday, June 10, 2006 in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Dr. Bill Goforth officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Evelyn Pauline Elkins
Mrs. Evelyn Pauline Elkins, age 81, passed away June 7, 2006 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Elkins was born December 30, 1925 in Mingo County, West Virginia to the late Willard and Isabelle Griffey Whitt. Mrs. Elkins is preceded in death by her husband, Posey George Elkins.
Mrs. Elkins was a member of Green Spring Presbyterian Church and was a member of Calista Boyd Chapter of Eastern Star in Matewan, West Virginia and the Star Dust Bowling Leauge.
Mrs. Elkins is survived by daughter, Kay Matney and Jerry Jessee of Bristol, Virginia and daughter, Fonnie Owens and husband Don of Abingdon. One brother, Willard Whitt, Jr. of Lexington, Kentucky. Grandchildren, Susan Duprie, Lelia Mervis, Celeste Matney, D.G. Owens, II, and Miranda Owens. Great-grandchildren, Meredith Dosher, Emily Dosher, and Chelsea Robinson.

Roy Russell Widener
Roy Russell Widener, age 54, passed away Tuesday, June 6, 2006 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He had lived most of his life in Damascus and was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Gladys Vestal Widener. He was a farmer.
Survivors include his daughter and her husband, Patricia and Christopher Clark, Abingdon, VA, a sister, Hazel Jobe, Meadowview, VA, brothers, James E. Widener and Curtis R. Widener both of Abingdon, VA, Johnny W. Widener and Frank Junior Fern both of Bristol, several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Jessica Stanley
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, June 9, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Greenwood Freewill Baptist Church. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Jane Jennings Jones
Jane Jennings Jones died June 8, 2006 at Grace healthcare Center in Abingdon after several months illness. Born June 20, 1920 in Lebanon, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Jennings and Mary Collings Montgomery Jennings. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. She graduated from Lebanon High School and attended Mary Washington College. For most of her adult life, she lived in the Washington D. C. area where she married
Robert Joseph Jones in 1962. Mr. Jones preceded her in death. She was employed by the State Department Agency for International Development as a pharmaceutical specialist. She traveled extensively in connection with her job and for pleasure.
Since her retirement, she has been a resident of Abingdon and, briefly, Bristol having returned to Abingdon recently. She was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and a patron of several charitable and cultural organizations. Besides Travel, she enjoyed politics, music, art, playing bridge and the stock market. “Great-Half- Aunt” Jane will be remembered as and independent and spirited woman, a loyal Democrat, lover of good jokes and as a loving friend.
Survivors include a nephew, Ralph Finney of Phoenix, AZ; her sister-in-law, Ruth Jones of Medford, NY; cousins Jean Hargroves White of Richmond, VA and Andrew Hargroves of Abingdon; ten great nieces and nephews including Martha Witherspoon and John Bradley III both of Abingdon and her special friend and “right hand” Mary (Sammie) McCracken of Glade Spring, VA.
The funeral service for Jane Jennings Jones will be conducted at 4:00 P. M., Sunday, June11, 2006 in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Ellie Scofield officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church Sunday. Margie Holley
Margie Holley, age 77, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, June 09, 2006 after a long bout with cancer. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She retired from Johnston Memorial Hospital after 25 years of service
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Trigg Thompson and Mary Magdalene Harris Thompson, her husband, George Holley, Sr. and one son, George Holley, Jr. She was a member of the Galilean Baptist Church.
She is survived by one son, Walter Holley and wife Brenda, Meadowview, VA; four daughters, Judy Hurd and husband Jack, Glade Spring, VA, Betty Shew and husband Ronnie, Meadowview, VA, Brenda Porter and husband Mike, Meadowview, VA, Rose Surber and husband John, Meadowview, VA; six grandsons; George Holley, III, (Chester), David Hurd, John Surber, Jr., Barry Porter, John Holley, Brian Porter, four granddaughters; Tammy Holley McNew, Rosemary Holley, Kim Shew McCracken, Hannah Surber and ten great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, June 11, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Blackwell Chapel cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Paul David Peterson
Mr. Paul David Peterson, age 38, passed away, Saturday, June 10, 2006, from injuries received in a car accident. He was born in Erwin, Tennessee, grew up in Greeneville, Tennessee and had lived in Washington County, Virginia for several years. Paul was a family man, putting his family first and foremost by taking care of all their needs. He wrote articles for the Southern Lawnmower Dealers Magazine and was an assistant Boy Scout leader and involved with his son in the Scouts. He made a profession of faith at an early age and recently talked about knowing he would be in Heaven at his death. He was a mechanic at the Southern States in Abingdon. Paul was preceded in death by an infant sister, Michele Joyce Peterson and both sets of grandparents.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Lowe Peterson; a son, Seth Hunter Peterson; a daughter, Kyla Marie Peterson all of the home; his father and step mother, Royce and Sandra Peterson of Chuckey, Tenn.; his mother and step father, Patricia and Warren Smith of Christiansburg, Va.; two sisters, Phoebe Peterson of Pearisburg, Va., Paula Taylor and husband, Rodney all of Greeneville, Tenn.; three stepsisters, Teresa Nyboer, Bambie Brown and Tammy Stokes all of Indiana; three nieces, Rachel Webb, Cheyenne Taylor and Hannah Taylor
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 15, 2006, at 10:00 AM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Doyle Pruett officiating.
