Donnie D. Woods

Mr. Donnie D. “Don” Woods, age 62, passed away, Sunday, July 9, 2006, at the Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born and lived in Lawrence County, Ohio before moving to Abingdon 25 years ago. Don was a truck driver for Air Gas-Mid America in Kingsport and was a US Army veteran serving in Vietnam. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #40 and the James E. Peters VFW Post #1994. He was the son of the late Frank C. and Ethel Miller Woods and preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters. Survivors include

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at 2:00 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service Rev. Tom Musselman and Rev. Bob Carbary officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park with military rites by the Highlands Fellowship Church Veterans Honor Color Guard.
The family will receive friends from 7 – 9 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Larry Edwards and his nephews, Robbie Carbary, Joe Tedder, Garrett Jackson, Keith Reeves, Wayne Smith, Matt Woods and Ben Hucks. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Support Services of Washington County, P.O. Box 1172, Abingdon, VA 24212 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 246, Abingdon, VA 24212.

Peggy Owens

Peggy L. Owens, age 58 passed away Friday, July 14, 2006 at her residence. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Don “Daddy” Yarber and a brother, William H. “W. H.” Yarber.

Survivors include her son Billy Owens, Glade Spring, VA, her daughter, Becky Bare Griffitts and husband Keith, Sugar Grove, VA, her mother, Katherine O. Yarber, Glade Spring, VA, her “Little Brother” Donnie Allison, Abingdon, VA, her sisters, Monnie Wright, Chatsworth, GA, Pat Bise, Sue Warren, Omagine Brewer all of Glade Spring, VA, Nancy Chit-Khin, Meadowview, VA, a special grandchild, Brady Owens, also grandchildren, Erica Bare and Ali Bare, several nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Jean Yarber, Abingdon, VA.

The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Dr. Donald Paxton and Mr. James Ball officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosedale Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Roby Mable Matney

Mrs. Roby Mable Matney, age 85, passed away Friday, July 14, 2006 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Matney was born July 28, 1920 in Jolo, West Virginia to the late Wallace and Polly Day Breeding.

Mrs. Matney is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arch Smith Matney, three sisters, and two brothers.

Mrs. Matney married Arch Smith Matney of Grundy, Virginia in 1935. They raised their five children in Grundy. Mr. and Mrs. Matney moved to Abingdon in 1964 and she attended the Abingdon Church of Christ for forty-two years.

Survivors include her children, Veda Brown of Riverside, California, Swanson Matney of Abingdon, Billy Ray Matney of Abingdon, Tonda Fluke of Bristol, Tennessee, and Elena Darnell of Fall Branch, Tennessee. Thirteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren also survive.

The funeral service will be held Monday, July 17, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Mr. Joe Scroggin officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be her eight grandsons, Jeff Cross, Brian Cross, Michael Matney, Brad Fluke, Kirk Matney, David Darnell, Billy Joe Matney, and Shannon Matney.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until time for the funeral service at 2:00 P.M. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital Memorial Program 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, Tennessee 38105.

Neil William Tolrud

Neil William Tolrud, age 57, died Sunday, July 16, 2006 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. He was a gentle, kind and loving individual and a man of honor and integrity. Neil was born on September 13, 1948 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was a son of the late Irv and Evelyn Tolrud Sheets. Neil was also preceded in death by his dog Gurdy.

Neil was a decorated U. S. Marine Corps Veteran of the Vietnam War, having received 3 purple hearts, Navy Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and many other citations and awards. He had retired from the Roanoke Virginia City Police department as senior Homicide Detective after almost 30 years of service. During his career as a police officer, he attended and graduated from many FBI and DEA sponsored schools and seminars. He had also received various police merit awards from many different organizations as well as several awards from the Roanoke City Police Department. Neil was an animal lover and humane supporter, an avid motorcycle rider and a member of the Roanoke Chapter of the Harley Riders Association.

Survivors include his wife Charlotte Warren Tolrud; a brother, Tom Tolrud and family of Tampa, FL; his dog, Harley; his mother-in-law, several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, dear and special friends and all of his Harley Rider friends.

A memorial service for Neil William Tolrud will be conducted at 2:00 P. M., Sunday, July 23, 2006 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Fellowship Church Veterans Honor Color Guard. In place of flowers, the family has asked that Neil be honored with memorial donations to the Bristol Humane Society, P. O. Box 1586, Bristol, Virginia 24201 or the Roanoke Valley S. P. C. A., 1340 Baldwin Avenue, NE, Roanoke, VA 24012.

Lila Christine Roberson

Lila Christine Osborne Roberson, age 76, went home to be with her Lord on July 17, 2006, at her home.
Lila was born on Dec. 31, 1929, in Pound and was the daughter of the late Edward and Ruth Osborne.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Thurl Bruce Roberson, whom she married on July 28, 1950; her sons, Bruce Kent Roberson and wife Cheryl of Lebanon and Rodney Howard Roberson of Pound; her daughter, Christa Roberson St. John and husband Matthew of Dallas; her grandchildren, Kent Roberson and Erin Roberson of Lebanon, Connor Roberson of Pound and Emily St. John and Kathryn St. John of Dallas; her brothers, Donald Osborne of Wise and Larry Osborne and Charles Osborne, both of Pound; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Lila Christine Osborne Roberson will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2006, in the Chapel of Love Mausoleum at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, with the Rev. Matthew St. John officiating. Entombment in the mausoleum will follow the service. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the Chapel of Love Mausoleum.

In place of flowers, the family has asked that Lila be honored with memorial donations in her memory to Central American Mission (CAM International), 8635 La Prada Drive, Dallas, TX 75228; (214) 327-8206.

Vergie Ellen Bordwine

Mrs. Vergie Ellen Osborne Bordwine, age 74, passed away, Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at the Johnson City Medical Center. She had lived most of her life in Glade Spring, Virginia and was of the Pentecostal faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Bordwine and a son, Billy Joe Bordwine. Vergie was known in the community as “old friend” since she enjoyed being around people, especially children. She is survived by:

Alan R. Bordwine, Glade Spring, Va.
Mark A. Bordwine, Jasper, Tenn.

Her grandson whom she thought of as a son, Jason B. Bordwine of Abingdon, Va.

Four brothers, Earl Osborne, Howard Osborne, Roy Osborne, Bill Osborne all of Meadowview, Va.

Three sisters, Gladys Osborne of Meadowview, Va.
Littie Mitchell of Glade Spring, Va.
Sister Mary Swob of Sidney, Ohio

Grandchildren, Amanda, Lee Ann, Kodey, Dylan, Sawyer, Derrick and Duane

Great grandchildren, Ethan, Brendon, Hailey, Tiffany and Nikki
and many people in the community with whom she loved.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 21, 2006, at 6:30 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Ministers Danny Runyon, Duane Smith and Mr. Johnny Boardwine officiating. A committal service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday in the Baptist cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Alan Bordwine, Mark Bordwine, Jason Bordwine, Denny Mitchell, Jimmy Osborne, Eugene Osborne and Kodey Bordwine. Honorary pallbearer will be Derrick Smith.

Gladys Juanita Carwile

Mrs. Gladys Juanita Carwile, age 65, went to be with the Lord Thursday, July 20, 2006, and is now walking on the streets of gold.
She had lived most of her life in Washington County, Va. She was a member of the Appalachian Independence Center and attended the Berry Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Alexander, and a brother, Caney Alexander.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Carwile; a son, Eddie Carwile of Richmond; a daughter, Mary Teaters and husband James of Chilhowie; honorary daughters, Karen Thornes of Parksley and Maggie Riggle of Wytheville; six brothers, Richard Alexander and wife Judy of Meadowview, Carl Alexander and wife Vonda of Abingdon, Dan Alexander of Meadowview, Lloyd Alexander and wife Carolyn of Damascus, Clyde Alexander and wife Debbie of Glade Spring and Ralph Alexander and wife Brenda of Rutherfordton County, N.C.; two sisters, Shirley Hurd and husband Marvin of Meadowview and Thelma Cannon of Meadowview; grandson, Bradley Teaters; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday, July 23, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway), with the Rev. Rick Cuddy officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the Forest Hills Branch.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Alexander, Ricky Hurd, Randy Riggle, John Denton, Jeff Edwards and Gene Edwards. Honorary pallbearer will be James Teaters.

Patsy Ann Mullins

Patsy Ann Thacker Mullins, age 60, of 1403 Rhode Island Avenue, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 21, 2006 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” Exodus 23:20. Upon her entry into Heaven, she met he family that had preceded her there, her parents Frank Thacker and Marie Nowlin Thacker; her brothers, Jimmy Thacker and James (Bug) Thacker, her sister, Diana Thacker Thomas and her grandchild Frederick Scott Brown.

She is survived by her loving husband, Terry Lee Mullins; her sons, Terry Patrick Mullins and wife Terri and James Allen Mullins; four daughters, Tina Lee Dotson and husband Bruce, Ruchella Marie Barton and husband Timmy, Lisa Ann Harrison and husband Joseph and Mary Louise Yarber and husband Brian; three brothers, Richard Thacker, Jerry Thacker and Terry Thacker; a sister Norma Jean Thacker; 18 grandchildren; Frankie Brown and Amy Dotson; Joey Barton, Billy Barton, Michael Barton and Kim Barton; Shane Boyd and Amanda Boyd; Kristi Blackburn and Heather Blackburn; Samantha Yarber and Erica Yarber; Kayla Mullins and John Mullins; Tiffany Bowers and Tosha Bowers; Tyler Mullins and Adrianna Rose; three great grandchildren, Josiah Barton and Jacob Barton and Jason Isaiah Blackburn (who was named by his great grandmother Patsy) and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Patsy Ann Thacker Mullins will be conducted at 4:00 P. M. Monday, July 24, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. paul Stanley officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P. M. Sunday in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Malcolm Donnell Ingle

Malcolm Donnell Ingle, age 84, died Friday, July 21, 2006 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

Malcolm was born on November 29, 1922 in Washington County, Virginia and was a son of the late Gilbert Ingle and Isabelle McGuire Ingle. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Rush Ingle and his brothers, Lloyd Ingle and Howard Ingle.

Malcolm had retired from the Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon; had previously worked for Pet Milk Company and had been a farmer all his life.

Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Ingle of Bristol, VA; his sons, Gary Ingle and wife Sandy, David Ingle and wife Diana, Jeffrey Ingle and wife Connie and Eddie Ingle and wife Tammy Ingle all of Abingdon; his brothers, Hubert Ingle of Kingsport, TN and Anthony Ingle of Hopewell, VA; his sisters, Dora Owens of Bristol, VA and Hazel Emory of Hopewell, VA; a special friend, Irene Reynolds; his grandchildren, Derick Reedy, Alisha Ingle, Tony Ingle, Josh Ingle, Kaitlin Ingle; his step-grandchildren, Melissa Salyer and Keith Burke and his step-great grandchildren, Dustin Salyer and Dale Fleenor.

The funeral service for Malcolm Donnell Ingle will be conducted at 8:00 P. M., Sunday, July 23, 2006 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens), 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Interment and burial service will be at 11:00 A. M., Monday, July 24, 2006 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending the burial service are asked to meet at the graveside by 10:50 A. M. Monday. Pallbearers will be Derick Reedy, Tony Ingle, Charles Owens, Kenneth Ingle, Bobby Ingle, Charles Rogers and Ben Able. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:45 P. M. Saunday at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Maynard Fisher

Mr. Maynard A. “Fish” Fisher, age 59, died Saturday, July 22, 2006, at his home. He was born in Wytheville, Virginia to the late Eugene and Mattie Fisher but had lived most of his life in Smyth County. He was employee of Utility Trailer Manufacturing and a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by a special friend, Joe Taylor. Survivors include

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:15 PM at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
