Sandra Mae Hatfield
Sandra Mae Hatfield, age 66, died Friday, August 18, 2006 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Born on September 29, 1939 in New Jersey, Sandy was a daughter of the late Harold Keiling and Alice McGraw Keiling. She and her husband had lived in California before moving to the Abingdon area over twenty years ago.
Sandy was very active member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and was involved in Washington County leadership where she served the Washington County Board of Supervisors and the County Administrator as administrative assistant.
Survivors include her husband Louis “Lee” Hatfield; a brother, Dick Keiling of Lima, New Hampshire; her sisters, Linda Lester and Barbara O’Connor both of Ocean Pines, MD and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Sandra Mae Hatfield will be conducted at 2:00 P. M., Monday, August 21, 2006 in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Weikle officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The following family members will serve as pallbearers: Mark Lester, Charles Lester, Dick Keiling, John O’Connor, John O’Connor, Jr. and David Hatfield. Honorary pallbearer will be a dear family friend, Tony Vallarelli. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Sunday, August 20 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
In place of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the University of Virginia Brain Research Fund, Division of Neurology Oncology, UVA Medical System, Hospital West, Room 6228, P. O. Box 800432, Charlottesville, VA 22908-0432.
Caleb Stephen Denton
Caleb Stephen Denton, age 3 went to be with the Lord Sunday, August 20, 2006 in the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Caleb attended Abingdon Bible Church, and loved Thomas the Train.
Caleb is survived by his parents who cherished and loved him deeply, Dr. Stephen and Angela Sizemore Denton of Abingdon, one brother, Luke Andrew Denton. Grandparents; Kenneth and Patricia Denton of Abingdon. Lula Sizemore of Grundy, Virginia. Caleb is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family would like to thank Marie Denton, Chuck and Polly Sizemore for their dedication and love to Caleb throughout our battle. In addition the family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital and especially Dr’s. Waldren, Dunsmore, Lynch, and Kron.
The family has requested a private funeral service and visitation.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital Memorial Program 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or for Rhabdomyosarcoma research.
Charles Preston Greer
Mr. Charles Preston Greer, age 71, passed away Monday, August 21, 2006 in Russell County Medical Center.
Mr. Greer was born August 10, 1935 in Abingdon, Virginia to the late Hoy W. Greer and Gladys Dolinger Greer. He had retired from the United States Air Force in 1976. Mr. Greer had lived in Damascus, Virginia prior to moving to Lebanon, Virginia. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbus, South Carolina and attended Lebanon Community Fellowship in Lebanon, Virginia
Mr. Greer is preceded in death by his father and first wife Sharron Greer.
Mr. Greer is survived by his wife, Susan Greer, his mother; Gladys Greer of Chilhowie, Virginia, three daughters, Charlene K. Grigsby of Lexington, South Carolina, Pam Wooten of Pelion, South Carolina, and Teresa Owens of Cayce, South Carolina. Two brothers, Bob Greer of Little River, South Carolina, Edward Greer of Bedford, Virginia. Three sisters, Janice Johnson of Abingdon, Virginia Williams of Abingdon, and Linda Bobo of Cordova, Tennessee. Seven grandchildren, Lori Grigsby, Jenna Grigsby, Tommy Wooten, Jr., Lyle Wooten, Sherilyn Melton, Terry Owens, and Randy Owens. Two great-grandchildren, Rebecca Melton and Ryan Melton also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, August 24, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jeff Williams and Rev. Tim Blevins officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Thursday, August 24, 2005 from 5:00 P.M. until time for service.
Frances Ellen Jones McPherson
Mrs. Frances Ellen Jones McPherson, age 95, died Thursday, August 31, 2006.
She was a native of Alabama and had lived in Bristol before moving to Abingdon a number of years ago. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. H. M. Jones of Bristol and was also preceded in death by her husband, Fillmore McPherson, Jr.
Mrs. McPherson was educated at Virginia Intermont College and East Tennessee State University and had taught in the Bristol, Tennessee and Washington County Virginia public schools. She was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church, the Abingdon Booklover’s Club, the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Friends of Barter Theatre.
Survivors include her son Fillmore McPherson III of Madison, CT; three grandchildren, Fillmore McPherson IV of Middletown, NY, Bruce McPherson and Amanda McPherson Kunard both of San Diego, CA; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Willis (Dorothy) Caldwell of Tallahassee, FL and Mrs. Antonio (Virginia) Cansino of Miami Beach, FL.
A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Frances Ellen Jones McPherson will be conducted at 10 A.M. Tuesday, September 5, 2006 in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however you may sign the guest register at any time there.
In place of flowers, the family asks that you honor Mrs. McPherson’s memory by making a memorial donation to the Barter Foundation, Post Office Box 867, Abingdon, VA 24212 or a charity of one’s choice.
Wilma Pauline "Polly" Gorth
Wilma Pauline “Polly” Gorth, age 69, died Friday, December 1, 2006 at her home.
She was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Lucille Coleman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gorth.
Survivors include her daughters, Diana Farres and Kathreen Farres; her sons, Andrew Farres, Christopher Farres, Gary Collins, Donald Collins and Robert Collins; her sisters, Louis, Jean, Janet and Ruth and many grandchildren including a special grandson, Nathan Russell.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Monday, December 4, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Wayne Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be family members.
The family will receive friends from 12 Noon Monday until the time of service.
Eugene E. Wyatt
Mr. Eugene Edward Wyatt, age 82, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol TN.
Mr. Wyatt was born November 7, 1924 in Ward, West Virginia to the late Alexander C. Wyatt and May Price Wyatt. Mr. Wyatt was a 1942 graduate of East Bank High School in West Virginia. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in World War II, where he received the Philippine Liberation Metal and the Asiatic-Pacific Metal and two stars. He was a member of the VFW Patton Crosswhite Post 6975 of Bristol TN. He was retired from American Electric Power, Clinch River Plant.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Maxine “Mac” Wyatt, and three brothers.
Mr. Wyatt is survived by his wife, Helen Carlton Wyatt, one son Robert Eugene Wyatt, one daughter Sherry Wyatt Helton, one sister Mary Ada Corliss, Moundsville WV, and several grandchildren.
Crypt side service will be conducted 6 pm Thursday December 7, 2006 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with Dr. David C. Stancil officiating. Entombment will follow the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Woodrow Dailey, James Carlton, N.B. Lambert, and Larry Lambert.
The family will receive friends from 5pm until time for the service in the mausoleum.

Mary Ellen Shazier
Mary Ellen Shazier, age 62, a former resident of Glade Spring, died Sunday, December 3, 2006 in Newport News, VA
She is survived by her husband, Willie Ray Shazier; 7 children, Anthony, Willie, Darryl, Donnella, Janice, Johnathan and Venica; her father, Curtis Montgomery; 3 siblings, Paul and Ronnie Montgomery and Delores Skipper; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Thursday at First Baptist Church-Denbigh in Newport News.
Graveside committal services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, December 9, 2006 at the Plum Creek cemetery, Glade Spring, VA

Mike Austin Lilly
Mike Austin Lilly, age 71, died Saturday, December 9, 2006 at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee.
Mike was born on January 24, 1935 in Washington County, Virginia and was a son of the late A. J. Lilly and Mabel Warren Lilly. He was also preceded in death by his sister Eveline Gobble. He lived many years in Maryland and had retired from the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Sparrows, Point, MD.
The family wishes to give a special thank you to the staff of the Wellmont Hospice House and Dr. Andrew Kamell.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Tedder Lilly; four daughters, Linda Rodgers and husband Stan, Patricia Whitt and husband Robert, Donna Diotte and husband Jeff all of Baltimore, MD and Tracy Nieberlein and husband Dan of Memphis, IN; two sons, Mike Austin Lilly, Jr. and wife Valerie of Hanover, IN and Kenneth Lilly and wife Beth of Bristol, VA; one brother, Tommy Lilly and wife Patty of Abingdon; three sisters, Roxanne Coulthard and husband Charles of Bristol, VA, Jayne Rouse and husband Harold of Abingdon and Judy Maddox and husband Joe of Cadiz, KY; a sister-in-law, Helen Fleenor of Danville, VA; a brother-in-law, Clarence Tedder of Abingdon, VA; 16 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Mike Austin Lilly will be conducted at the graveside at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 12, 2006 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with his son-in-law Dan Niberlein providing the eulogy. A procession will leave the funeral home on Tuesday at 1:40 P. M. to go to the cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Monday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

John Leland Boardwine
Mr. John Leland Boardwine, age 70, entered safe into the arms of Jesus on Monday, December 11, 2006 in Bristol Regional Medical Center with his loving wife and children by his side.
Mr. Boardwine was born August 30, 1936 in Washington County, Virginia to the late Alex and Lockie Boardwine. He was a retired truck driver of 38 years and a member of Damascus Road Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Warren Boardwine and several half brothers and sisters.
Mr. Boardwine is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 49 and a half years, Phyllis Thomas Boardwine; three daughters, Melissa McPhail and husband Scott of Bristol Tennessee, Brenda France and fiancé, Walt Boling of Bristol, Tennessee, and Julie Gill and husband Shane of Lansing, Michigan. Two sons; John Mark Boardwine and wife Ladonna of Bristol, Tennessee, and James Boardwine and wife Lea Anne of Bristol, Tennessee; nine grandsons, Chris, Jason, and Ryan Vaughan, Joey Powers and Tanner Boardwine, Jamie Boardwine, Carson, Mason, and Harrison Gill. four granddaughters, Deidra, Brianna, Savanna, and Jada Boardwine; one great-grandson, Boston Vaughan; one half brother, Mason Fry and wife Barbara; one half sister, Gladys Call and several nieces and nephews, a host of friends and neighbors and his pet companion, Snickers.
The funeral service for Mr. Boardwine will be conducted on Wednesday December 13, 2006 at 8P.M. at Damascus Road Baptist Church 18844 JEB Stuart Highway Abingdon, Virginia 24211, with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. and Mr. Boardwine’s son-in-law, Shane Gill officiating. A committal service will be conducted at 12 noon Thursday December 14, 2006 in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Everyone whishing to attended the service is asked to assemble at the cemetery by 11:50 A.M.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Chris Vaughan, Jason Vaughan, Ryan Vaughan, Jamie Boardwine, Joey Powers, and John Tanner Boardwine. Honorary Junior Pallbearers will be grandsons, Carson Gill, Mason Gill, and Harrison Gill.
The family will receive friends at the church from 5:30 P.M – 7:45 P.M. Wednesday December 13, 2006.

Charlie Jefferson Miller
Mr. Charlie Jefferson Miller, age 86 passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2006 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Charlie retired from the Columbus -McKinnon Corporation and was a retired farmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert H. and Sally Ryan Miller, brothers, John, Paul, Walter, Roy and Preston, son-in-law, Ronnie White, grandson, Jeff White.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Agnes Miller, one son, Bobby Miller and his wife, Joann Miller, Meadowview, VA, two daughters, Connie White, Merritt Island, FL and Sarah Lamie and husband, Sam “Hoppy” Lamie, Glade Spring, VA, grandchildren, Mark and Michelle Miller, Melissa and Ronnie Harrington, Todd White, Tim and Lindsay Lamie and Laura Lamie, two great grandchildren, Madison Miller and Miles Harrington.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, December 15, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Thomas Capron officiating. The committal graveside service will be conducted Saturday, December 16, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:50 p.m. on Saturday. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Buford F. Holbrook
Buford F. Holbrook, age 83, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006 in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Wise County, Va. and was the son of the late Bonham F. Holbrook and Nora Hamm Holbrook. He was a retired mine electrician with Clinchfield Coal Company and a member of UMWA. Mr. Holbrook was also a member of the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church, Bristol Va and a Master Mason of the York Lodge No.12 of Abingdon. Mr. Holbrook and his wife moved to Bristol, VA, 34 years ago from Coeburn, VA.
His wife, Della H. Holbrook, preceded Mr. Holbrook in death.
He is survived by one son, David Holbrook, Charlotte NC; two daughters, Rhonda Hurt and husband, Mark of Abingdon, and Jill Fields and husband, David, Roanoke, VA; six grandchildren, Ben Holbrook, Jessica Holbrook, Elizabeth Hurt, Alex Hurt, Thomas Hurt, and Anthony Fields and a very special cousin, Nell Asbury of Wise, VA.
Funeral services for Mr. Buford Holbrook will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2006 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with the Rev. John Markel and the Rev. Barbara Gravely officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View cemetery; Bristol Va. Pallbearers will be friends.

Frank Delano Glasscock
Mr. Frank Delano Glasscock, age 66 passed away Saturday, December 16, 2006 in the Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, TN.
Mr. Glasscock was a native of Alabama, had resided in Richlands, Virginia most of his life and had lived in Abingdon since 2004. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy having served on the USS Intrepid for ten years and also having received the Purple Heart. He retired from United Central Industrial Supply with twenty-five years of service, was a member of the Victory Baptist Church, Vansant, VA. and the American Legion Post #0164, Grundy, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Nellie Adams Glasscock, a brother, Edward Glasscock, and a sister, Faye Laminack.
Survivors include his wife, Claudetta Breeding Glasscock, Abingdon, VA, his son and daughter-in-law, Frank D. Glasscock, Jr. and wife Pamela Glasscock, Bristol, TN, his daughters and sons-in-law, Janet Holt and husband, Reverend Daryl Holt, Locust Fork, Alabama, Cynthia Hawkins and husband, Jesse Hawkins, Oneonta, Alabama, his sister and brother-in-law, Linda Wadsworth and husband, Bobby Wadsworth, Allgood, Alabama, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a special friend, Sharon Cradic, Church Hill, TN.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, December 17, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Reverend Daryl Holt and Reverend David Wadsworth officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until time of the service. The entombment and committal service will be conducted Monday, December 18, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum, located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens with full military honors to be rendered by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard. Those attending are requested to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Monday for the procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason Lake, Daniel Corbett, Gary Breeding Joe Laminack, Joey Bryant, Junior Breeding and Terry Cradic. Honorary pallbearers will be Donnie Laminack, Chuck Morris, Wayne Thayer, Dan Looney, Carl Puckett, Ural Childress, Dr. William Hunter, Dr. Bruce Higinbotham and Kermit Rowe. Junior honorary pallbearers will be Finn Glasscock, Matthew Hawkins, Alex Lake and Reece Holland.
