H. C. Kiser, Jr.
Hiram Clay Kiser, Jr. (H. C.), age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 31, 2007. He was the son of the late Hiram Clay Kiser, Sr. and Dacy Katherine Kiser. Mr. Kiser was a lifelong resident and farmer of Washington County, Virginia. He was a member of The Gideons International. He was also a member of Abingdon Baptist Church where he was Deacon Emeritus. He was a retired chief fire investigator with the Virginia Department of Forestry. Mr. Kiser was an extraordinary servant of the Lord and a devoted follower of Christ; he touched many lives with his testimony of his World War II POW experiences and his desire for everyone to know the Lord as revealed in his favorite scripture, “Jesus says, I will never leave you or forsake you”. Hebrews 13:5.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Grace Hutton Kiser; one daughter, Cindy Howard and husband Fred, of Harlan, Kentucky; one son, Mike and wife Zan, of Ringgold, Georgia; one sister, Ann Colley, of Abingdon; three grandsons, Kyle Howard, Evan Howard, and Austin Kiser; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, November 2, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Abingdon Baptist Church with Dr. Steven Pollard and Pastor Jimmie Davidson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Committal services will be conducted Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 2:00 p. m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military rites by the Highlands Fellowship Veteran’s Honor Color Guard. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:45 p.m. Saturday.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Crigger, Larry Bays, David Duncan, Mike Mullins, Buddy Carrier, David Johnson, Charles Grogan, and Don Salyers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Harry Denton Sunday school class, members of The Gideons International, and members of the Southwest Virginia Chapter of Prisoners of War.

Jerry Russell Street
Mr. Jerry Russell Street, 59, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2007.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 7, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor David Rader and Pastor Bob Neace officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 pm at Forest Hills.
Pallbearers will be Ira Lowe, Chris Bailey, Wayne McCroskey, Mark Fleenor, David McCroskey, and Larry Hamm. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Hayes, Gene McConnell, Fred McCroskey, Jay Fleenor, and William (Bud) Fleenor.
Arthur W. Kilgore
St. Paul, Va----Arthur W. Kilgore, a lifelong resident of Honey Branch, recently passed away at the age of eighty-four. Arthur was predeceased by his wife, Clinas Johnson Kilgore, his father, Frank Kilgore, and his mother, Elsie Phillips Kilgore, and is survived by two children, Jean Kilgore of Honey Branch and Frank Kilgore.
Arthur attended Honey Branch School, worked as a truck driver and coal miner and was a member of the United Mineworkers of America. His siblings, Harmon Kilgore, Lora Helbert, Bonnie Milton, Mary Long and Eddie Kilgore; his grandchildren, Kari Kilgore, Jamie Steffey, Joyce Kilgore and Jason Kilgore, and four great-grandchildren, Bryce Kilgore, Suzanne Sheerer, Kennedy Kilgore and Adam Sheerer, also survive him.
Arthur served with the 104th Infantry Division (the “Timberwolves”) of the U.S. Army, a unit that saw major action throughout Europe. Just prior to his death, Arthur met another Timberwolf at the Russell County Medical Center, Dalley Wade of Rosedale, and they exchanged memories of serving under General Terry Allen. Sergeant Wade, a Bronze Star recipient, recently passed away. Both veterans were true mountain men, expert marksmen, and unswerving patriots that served their native Southwest Virginia and nation well. The Kilgore family urges anyone that knows war veterans to thank them for what they have done for all of us.
The family will hold services at a joint ceremony for Arthur and his wife, Clinas, in November to commemorate their wedding anniversary at a private family cemetery. The family wishes to thank all the great ladies at the Hummingbird Retirement Villa in Lebanon, Virginia, for taking such good care of “Wildman” during his last remaining months. They became his second family and are greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or local VFW and DAV groups.
Mary Blackwell
Mrs. Mary Blackwell, age 76, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 5, 2007 in Valley Health Care in Chilhowie, Virginia.
Mrs. Blackwell was born July 29, 1931 in Washington County, Virginia to the late Samuel Leslie Coe and Annie Lucille Thomas Coe. She had resided in Washington County all of her life. She was a member of Plasterco Church of God and was a member of the Women’s Ministry.
Mrs. Blackwell was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clinton Randolph Blackwell, two sons, Gary Randolph Blackwell and Philip Alan Blackwell; one brother, William Coe.
Mrs. Blackwell is survived by two sons, Clifton Blackwell and wife, Ana of Hampton, Virginia, Jeffrey Steven Blackwell and wife, Lynn of Meadowview, Virginia; two daughters, Revonda DeBord and husband, Bill of Tazewell, Virginia and Rachel Osborne and husband, Scott of Louisville, Kentucky; one daughter-in-law, Linda Blackwell of Seven Mile Ford, Virginia, four brothers, Lilburn Coe of Monterey, Tennessee, Charlie Coe of Glade Spring, Virginia, Graham Coe of Dover, Delaware, and Kyle Coe of Glade Spring, Virginia; two sisters, Ellen Thomas of Meadowview, Virginia and Margaret Blevins of Chilhowie, Virginia. Sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Plasterco Church of God with Rev. Charles Williams, Rev. Kenneth Poston, Rev. Wayne Poston, and Rev. Adam Blackwell officiating. Burial will follow in Old Glade Baptist cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lance DeBord, Adam Blackwell, Joseph Blackwell, Jeff Blackwell, Jeremy Blackwell, Christopher Osborne, and Justin Osborne. Margie H. Hearl
Margie H. Hearl, loving mother and grandmother, age 90, passed away at home September 1, 2007, under the loving care of Hospice, Dawn Allen, and her family. She moved from Abingdon, VA to Brooksville, FL, in 1994. Throughout her life, she enjoyed cooking, quilting, gardening, reading, and collecting Fenton glass baskets.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Fred Hearl.
Survivors include three sons: Douglas (Anita) of Brooksville, FL; Gail (Rita) of Abingdon; and Quincy (Betty) of Sebastian, FL; eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by two brothers: Alfred (Eleanor) Stone of High Springs, FL, and Harold (Sylvia) Stone of Mt. Sterling, KY.
Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Hearl will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2007, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, with the Rev. John Stapleton officiating. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Robert T. Fugate
Mr. Robert Thomas Fugate, age 86, passed away Thursday, September 6, 2007 in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Fugate was born November17, 1920 in Washington County. He is survived by two daughters, Pam Fugate and fiancé, Keith Moody of Abingdon and Robin McNew and husband Gary of Bristol, Virginia, one son, Curtis Skeen of Bristol, VA. One brother, Henry Fugate and wife of Abingdon, Virginia; five grandchildren, five great-children. Two sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy Ann Skeen Fugate, his parents and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Fugate was a World War II United States Army Veteran and a life long resident of Washington County most recently residing in Abingdon Manor.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 9, 2007 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. David Critcher and Rev. Stephen Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends in the funeral home from 6-8 P.M. Saturday, September 8, 2007.
Pallbearers will be Keith Moody, Jim McCray, David Hess, Chuck Mitchell, John Able, and Doug Ray.
Anne Rayne Taylor Foster
Anne Rayne Taylor Foster died peacefully on Saturday, September 8, 2007, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on January 10, 1922, in Richmond, Virginia, the daughter of Edward Pitts Taylor and Frances Venable Lancaster Taylor. She was a graduate of Richmond Polytechnic Institute. Anne married
Wirt Henry Foster in 1944, settling in Abingdon, Virginia, after Wirt’s graduation from VPI in Blacksburg. She was employed by HAPCO, Appalachian Power and the Washington County Health Department. In 1969 she became one of Abingdon’s first female realtors and its first female broker in 1975. Anne retired from real estate in 1982 and traveled with her husband to many scenic locations between Florida and Alaska. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, playing the piano and organ, singing in the choir, gardening and arranging flowers. Anne was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. She was also was a member of Circle Number One, Black’s Fort DAR and Abingdon Book Lovers’ Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Wirt Foster; by her sister Frances Casson of Newport News, Virginia; and by her brother E. P. Taylor of Amarillo, Texas.
Anne is survived by her four children: Anne Langhorne Foster of Greensboro, NC; Frances Lancaster Foster and her husband Bill McMullen of Montgomery, AL; Eva Marion Foster of Seattle, WA; and David Rayne Foster and his wife Karen of Abingdon, VA; and by six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
On Monday, September 10, 2007, the family of Anne Foster will receive guests between 6:00 and 7:00 pm in the Ladies’ Parlor of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. Immediately following visitation, the funeral service for Anne Foster will be held in the sanctuary of the church at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Washington County Library, 205 Oak Hill, Abingdon, Virginia 24210.
Clyde Carter Taylor
Mr. Clyde Carter Taylor, age 78, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2007 in the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN.
Mr. Taylor was a lifelong resident of Washington Co., VA. He was preceded in death by his parents Hiram Taylor and Susie Poston Taylor. He was a member of the Chestnut Grove Church. Clyde enjoyed gardening and was quick to share the bounty from the garden with friends and family. He could always be counted on to help in making apple butter, stirring was his specialty. He retired from U.S Gypsum after 44 years of service where he worked as a mine foreman.
Mr. Taylor is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Clara Taylor, Meadowview; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Taylor and Janie of Salem VA., and Mike Taylor and, June, of Meadowview VA.; one sister, Pearl Stallard of Saltville VA.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kyle Taylor and Rosie of Abingdon VA, and Glen Taylor and Wanda of Saltville, VA; five grandchildren, Tawyna Harris and husband Tom of Lynchburg VA., Natalie Gillespie of Charlotte, NC., Chris Taylor, Saltville, VA., Michael Taylor and special friend Natalie of Charlotte, NC., and David Taylor and wife Michele of Virginia Beach, VA.; and a special sister-in-law June Casey.
Funeral services for Mr. Clyde Taylor will be held Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at 8 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Olen Cassell and Rev. Bill Reynolds conducting the service. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service begins on Tuesday. Graveside services will be held at 11a.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Mount Rose cemetery in Glade Spring, VA, Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery. Robert Earl Wyrick
Mr. Robert Earl Wyrick, age 75, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2007 in the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, VA.
He was born in West Virginia, had been a resident of Washington County since 1941 and had served in the U. S. Armed Forces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Maude McClure Wyrick, a brother, Junior Wyrick, a sister, Gladys Catron, a daughter, Martha Lynn Wyrick.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and David Musick, Sugar Grove, VA, Robin and Michael Heath, Meadowview, VA, a brother, Charles Wyrick, Glade Spring, VA, a sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Everette Kress, Chilhowie, VA, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Becky Kress, Chilhowie, VA.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Roger Minton
Mr. Roger Lee Minton, age 61, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2007 at his home.
Roger was a life long resident of Washington County, and a faithful member of Rosedale Baptist Church. He was a United States Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War. Roger graduated from Abingdon High School in 1964. He retired from the United States Postal Service after 27 years of service. During his retirement he has enjoyed camping with his wife, and he has worked as a substitute bus driver in Washington County Schools. Roger loved visiting with people, and he had two very good friends Ken Sexton and Randy Laird.
Roger was preceded in death by his son Roger Lee Minton, II, and his father Wilmer “Bill” Minton.
Roger is survived by his wife of 39 years Jettye Scott Minton, his mother Hazel Minton of Abingdon; his son Ricky Lynn Minton and his wife, Jennifer of Kingsland, GA; his daughter-in-law Lisa Minton of Kingsland, GA; his brother Randall James Minton of Newton, NC; three granddaughters, Alyssa Minton, Kendall Minton, and Maisy Minton all of Kingsland, GA; and two nephews Tyler and Brent Minton.
A funeral service will be conducted 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 12, 2007 in Rosedale Baptist Church with Mr. Charles Fugate officiating. A private graveside service will be conducted at Oak Grove cemetery in St. Mary’s, GA. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 -8 P.M. on Wednesday.
Michael Widener
Michael (Mike) Edward Widener, age 46, left his earthly body for a pair of angel wings on Friday, September 7, 2007 at 3:05 A. M. in the Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Widener and Ann Burke; his brother Mark Widener; his grandparents, Emmitt and Ida Kinsley Burke and his cousins, Allen Lethcoe and Gary Triplett.
He is survived by his loving family members including his children, Amanda Hope Hewitt, Yvette Widener and Mark (Mead) Widener-Reynolds; his sister and brother-in-law, Shelia and David Reynolds of Abingdon; his brothers, Sam Widener and Joey Widener both of Abingdon; nieces and nephews, Angel and Joey Willis, J-Jay and Dawn Murray, Eric and Kelly Widener, Michael and Jennifer Widener, Zachary, Breanna, Malachi and Haleigh Widener, Savannah Reynolds; a special brother-in-law and best friend, Jimmy Murray; great nieces and nephews, B. J. Jenkins, Jossie and Keiffer Willis, Seth Widener and Russell, Kayla and Dillan; his aunts, Nora Lee Gosa, Sarah Ellen Goodman, Betty Triplett and Ginger Fleenor; great aunts and uncles, Bert Reedy Carol, Bob Kinsley and Effie Kinsley.
