Janet Lancraft Rasnick
Noted area artist, Janet Lancraft Rasnick, passed away Saturday, October 20, 2007 after a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John O. Rasnick, her parents; Ray and Nellie Lancraft; and a brother, Phil Lancraft.
Mrs. Rasnick came to live in Southwest Virginia from Riverside, California in 1954. She worked as a clerk for the USDA until her retirement in 1992. She was an active member of the Abingdon Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years.
Mrs. Rasnick was an accomplished artist. She was a member of the VA Watercolor Society and was one of the original members of a group known as “Wednesday Morning Painters.” She was also an original member of the Depot Artists Association. She served on the VA Highlands Festival Board for 25 years and was a Fine Arts Committee Chair and Co-Chair many times.
She was a resident artist at the Arts Depot for 14 years and just recently retired from her studio. Her paintings were in numerous exhibits both locally and regionally and won many awards. She was a passionate supporter of the arts.
Mrs. Rasnick is survived by her daughter, Sandra and husband Toy Bowen, Roanoke; son, Jeff and wife Gladys Ann Rasnick, Fincastle; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandsons and her brother, Paul and wife Betty Lancraft, Florida, sisters-in-law, Vivian Redwine, Mildred Rasnick, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Zane and Mae Parks, Doyle Wayne and Linda Rasnick as well as many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Rasnick is also survived by very special friends, Barbara and Jim Hackworth, Charlotte, NC.
There will be a memorial service at Abingdon Baptist Church on Monday, October 22, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside committal service will be conducted Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be “The Lunch Bunch” and her buddies from the Art Deport.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Abingdon Baptist Church Choir Fund and the Abingdon Arts Depot.
Esther E. Turner
Mrs. Esther E. Turner, 84, died Saturday, October 20, 2007 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. She was a native of Dickenson County, Virginia and had lived in Michigan before retiring to Abingdon 30 years ago. Mrs. Turner retired from the Chrysler Corporation after 24 years of service. She was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Abingdon where she enjoyed church retreats and fellowship.
Mrs. Turner delighted in gardening, canning, and sewing. She loved her family, planning family reunions and going out to lunch and going shopping. Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her parents, James Robinson and Delphia Compton Robinson; husband, Raymond Turner; one son, Raymond Gene Turner; two daughters Wilma Eneis and Joan Hutchison.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Harshman and her husband Donald L. Harshman, Jr., Clarkston, Michigan, and Mary Binienda and her husband Robert Binienda, Northville Michigan; one brother Frank Robinson, Carol, Michigan; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; aunts, uncles; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Esther Turner will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 1 pm in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, with Elder Joel Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Mrs. Turner’s family will receive friends Tuesday, October 23, 2007 from 7pm until 9pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Mary Love Johnson Caudill
Mary Love Johnson Caudill died Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at her home.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Caudill; her parents, Harlow and Lucille Johnson; and her brother, Benny Johnson. She had been employed by the Abingdon K-Mart store.
She is survived by her sons, Jim Caudill and wife Stephanie of Lebanon, VA; and Mike Caudill and wife Susan of Meadowview, VA; her sister Carol Rosenbaum and husband Pete of Abingdon; and her grandchildren C.J., Jacob and Laura Sue.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2007, in the Mount Rose cemetery Mausoleum in Glade Spring, Virginia with the Rev. Paul Hite officiating. Those attending the funeral service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 p.m. Thursday. Pallbearers will be Patrick Stewart, Anthony Rosenbaum, Johnny Lee Rosenbaum, Jerry Caudill, Joe Wilson, and Bobby Johnson. Carl Wesley Crosswhite
Carl Wesley “Goose” Crosswhite, 47 passed away Monday, October 22, 2007 at his home.
He was an employee of General Engineering for 29 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Preston Crosswhite, a sister, Diana Mink and a brother, Thomas Dexter Crosswhite.
Surviving are his mother, Ethylene Crosswhite, two brothers, Nator Crosswhite, Dwight Crosswhite and wife, Judy, two sisters, Regina Baumgardner and husband, Jessie, Kathy Cox and friend, Danny Barnard all of Meadowview, VA, several nieces and nephews. Lifetime friend, Larry Tolliver and special friends, Ike Moore, Pete Roberts, Janet Cahill, Jimmy Holmes, Randy Waddell, Danny Ryan, Darrell Caudill, Kitzie Cullop, Chris and Robin Moore and all the employees of General Engineering. He is also survived by his kitty cat, “Sally.”
The graveside service will be conducted Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mountain View Baptist cemetery, Meadowview, VA with Pastor Tommy Wilson officiating.
Friends attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:50 p.m.

Daniel Keys Thomas, Sr.
Daniel Keys Thomas, Sr., age 66 passed away Monday, October 22, 2007 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Washington County, VA, a son of the late Ben and Mary Jane Thomas. He lived in Glade Spring all of his life and had been an employee at Columbus-McKinnon in Damascus, VA for 35 years. He was a member of the Seven Spring Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred Thomas, G. W. Thomas and Benny Thomas, four sisters, Ava Lucy Thomas, Gay Thomas, Geneva Moore, and Evelyn Bott.
Surviving is his loving wife of 44 years, Peggy Thomas, three sons and one daughter-in-law, Danny and Sherrie Thomas, Mike Thomas and Fred Thomas, all of Glade Spring, VA, one daughter and son-in-law, Jane and P. J. Catron, Chilhowie, VA, four grandchildren, Danielle Catron, Dylan Catron, Rebekah Thomas and Sarah Thomas, four sisters, Orie Olinger and husband, Jack Olinger, Glade Spring, VA, Betty Frye and husband, Junior Frye, Saltville, VA, Ruby Nipper and husband, Carl Nipper, Saltville, VA, Mary Thomas and husband, Dale Thomas, Abingdon, VA.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, October 26, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Seven Spring Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tom Sullivan and Rev. Ronnie Blevins officating. Interment will follow in the Baptist cemetery.

Mable Loretta Barker
Mrs. Mable Loretta Barker, age 81, passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Hermitage Nursing Home in Elizabethton, TN.
She was a charter member of the Abingdon Bible Church and had worked by her husband’s side for many years at Barker’s Farm Supply. During WW II she worked at the Munitions plant in Bristol.
She was born on August 27, 1926 in Washington County, Virginia the tenth of eleven children of the Rev. John Lee Poston and Hattie Worley Poston. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband James M. Barker, Jr.; five sisters, Velma Parker, Revonda Netherland, Bertha Noonkester, Lakie Boardwine, Nadine Doak and three brothers Gilbert, Arland and Paul Poston.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Fonda R. Burke and George Burke of Abingdon; her son and daughter-in-law, James A. Barker and Sandy Barker of Elizabethton, TN; her sister, Dana Larkey of Kingsport, TN; her grandchildren, Dr. Bobby H. Smith II and wife Laura of Philadelphia, MS, James W. Barker and wife Leslie Schom Barker of Smiths, AL and Christa Smith Anderson and husband Stacey of Arlington, VA; her great grandchildren Clarissa Smith and Hannah Smith; her step-grandchildren Teresa Snead, Amy Burke and Penny Amos; her step-grandchildren Paul Martin, Tabitha Smith, Sarah Smith and Mary Smith; her step-great grandchildren Lindsey Snead, Sierra Snead, Adrianna Snead and Payton Amos. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to recognize and thank the health care providers at Hermitage Healthcare Center in Elizabethton and at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center as well as the caregivers and special friends at home whose care and compassion meant so much to Mrs. Barker.

M. Sunday, October 28, 2007 in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Paul Bufford and Rev. William Austin officiating. Music will be provided by Tina Foster Jones and Jessica James. Interment will follow the service at Knollkreg Memorial Park.

J. D. Widener
Mr. J. D. Widener age 71 passed away Sunday, October 28, 2007 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.
J. D. was a native of Smyth County, VA, had resided in Abingdon since 1969 and attended the Wyndale United Methodist Church. He was a driver/salesman for Spahr’s Greenhouses, Jack Blevin’s Greenhouses and had been employed at the Inntowner Furniture Store.
J. D. was preceded in death by his parents, Hobert and Ethel Price Widener, six brothers, Bernard, Edward, Harlow “Red, ” Ronnie, Warren and Gary Widener.
He was a loving husband and was the best Daddy and Granddaddy.
Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Betty Belcher Widener of the home, four daughters, Connie Ingle and husband Jeff Ingle and their children, Alisha and Tony of Abingdon, Janet Groseclose and her sons, Corey and Matthew of Abingdon, Lisa Cosnotti and her children, Ashton, Quad and Alex of Roanoke, VA, and Tracy Thomas and husband, Jonathan Thomas and their son, Hunter of Glade Spring, VA, three sons, David, Larry and Darryl, two sisters, Retha Harris, Marion, VA, Freida Osborne and husband Henry Osborne, Marion, VA, three brothers, Herbert Widener and wife, Betty Widener, Groseclose, VA, Reed Widener and wife, Marie Widener, Seven Mile Ford, VA, Gerald Widener and wife, Vickie Widener, Marion, VA, one brother-in-law, Gene Belcher and wife, Vivian Belcher, Bristol, VA, several nieces and nephews.
He will be missed by his special dog, “Mindy.”

Olla Delphine Campbell
Mrs. Olla Delphine Campbell, age 84, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2007 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Born on September 2, 1923 in Washington County, VA, Delphine was a daughter of the late Wiley Dunn and Rebecca Whittaker Dunn. She was also preceded in death by her brother Amberson Dunn and her sisters, Stella Ward, Kate Price, Ruth Black, Lucy Grubb, Margie Worrell and Ollie Dunn.
Delphine was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and hard working woman who enjoyed helping and providing for her family. She was a longtime member of the Alvarado Bible Church which she faithfully attended until her death.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years (who was also her devoted caregiver) Charles H. Campbell; her daughters, Charlene Milhorne and husband Joe and Sandy Cook and husband Joe all of Abingdon; four grandsons, Jason Cook and wife Betty, Josh Milhorne and wife April, Anthony Milhorne and wife Teresa and Craig Milhorne and wife Crissy; seven great grandchildren, Sierra Milhorne, Hannah Milhorne, John Milhorne, Chesney Milhorne, Andrew Milhorne, Natalie Cook and Dalton Young. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday in the Alvarado Bible Church with Rev. Anthony Milhorne and Rev. Warren Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 P. M. until the time of service on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Jason Cook, Anthony Milhorne, Josh Milhorne, Craig Milhorne, Andrew Milhorne and Larry Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Harless, Harold Amburgey, Joey Amburgey, Joe Cook and Joe Milhorne.
Doris Ringstaff Burroughs
Doris Ringstaff Burroughs, 82, of Abingdon, Virginia, passed away on October 31, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. A native of Pounding Mill, Virginia, Ms. Burroughs retired from an extensive nursing career and returned to her roots in southwest Virginia.
After graduating from Richlands High School, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corps, training at Norfolk General Hospital before being assigned to New Orleans, Louisiana, where she would also model shoes, hats, and gloves to supplement her nursing income. Following World War II, she moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she practiced and taught nursing at Cook County Hospital. She later became the corporate nurse for Hartford Insurance Company in Chicago; where her duties included caring for workers injured during the construction of the 95 story John Hancock Building. Ms. Burroughs also completed an Associates Degree in Interior Design at the Harrington School of Design. Golf, antiquing, and classical music were her passions.
She was preceded in death by her husband, F. Dillon Burroughs, and is survived by two sisters, Margaret Rountree of Hampton, Virginia and Elfie Forrest of Richlands, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Patsy (Earl) Ringstaff of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, and three generations of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be private with interment at Clinch Valley cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Ms. Burroughs to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 301 East Valley Street, Abingdon, Virginia 24210.
