Archer L. Yeatts Jr. dies at 82
Jul 28, 2002
Archer L. Yeatts Jr. once told a reporter that if not for World War II, he would have built a career as a farmer in his native Pittsylvania County. Instead, the former educator devoted his later working years to state government.
Mr. Yeatts, a 15-year member and past chairman of the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board who served as an executive assistant to Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr., died Saturday after a short battle with cancer. The Richmond resident was 82.
Raised on a farm near Chatham, he had only a year of study at what is now Virginia Tech before he was asked to teach vocational agriculture at Climax High School. At the time experienced male teachers were being called to military duty.
Toward the end of the war, he, too, was drafted into the Army. A few years after his return to Southside Virginia, he went back to Virginia Tech, completing his bachelor's degree in 1950 and his master's in 1954.
A former instructor in a state agriculture training program for veterans in Southside Virginia, he spent two years on the faculty of his alma mater before being named assistant supervisor for agricultural education in Virginia. By 1963, he had moved to the state Department of Agriculture and served as assistant to the state commissioner.
Mr. Yeatts, a conservative Democrat, then was executive assistant to Godwin during the then-Democratic governor's first term. Godwin appointed him to the three-seat ABC board in 1969.
"I always liked to say Daddy went from raising corn to dispensing it in its liquid form - with the state's blessing," said his son, Archer L. Yeatts III, a judge in Henrico County General District Court.
When Godwin was re-elected as a Republican in 1974, he named Mr. Yeatts the ABC board's chairman.
Mr. Yeatts served as chairman until 1978 and was reappointed chairman by then-Gov. Charles S. Robb in 1982.
He retired the following year but in 1986 accepted an appointment to the State Board of Corrections.
He was also a former member of the Richmond Metropolitan Authority board of directors as well as a former president of the National Association of Alcoholic Beverage Control Association.
Mr. Yeatts was the widower of Elinor Moore Yeatts.
In addition to his son, survivors include his wife, Virginia T. Ford Yeatts; a daughter, Kathryn Y. Davis, of Richmond; a sister, Ann Y. Pulliam, of Louisville, Ky.; two stepsons, Henry R. Ford Jr., of Richmond, and Charles R. Ford, of Atlanta; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church, where Mr. Yeatts had been a member for 40 years.
