Lelyia Austin
Gate City, VA - Lelyia Gilreath Austin, 92 of Gate City, Va., passed away, with her loving family by her side, on Saturday, April 21, 2007, at her home, following several months of declining health. She was born in Scott County Virginia to the late Hiram and Arminda McDavid Gilreath.
Lelyia lived her entire life as a wonderful role model and inspiration to those who knew her. She was always there with her nine children and instilled caring, giving and integrity to her children. Her family was always first and foremost in her life and she was always there for her "babies" as they were with her when God took her home on Saturday.
She was a wonderful, fun-loving, hard-working, generous and caring person. She loved to work in her flowers and yard and sew and make quilts before her eyesight failed rapidly some years ago. The family would like to thank her wonderful neighbors for being so kind to her and for always being there if she needed them. She loved everyone and strived always to lead by her example of being good to everyone.
Lelyia was a member of Walnut Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in East Carters Valley. She had been a Sunday school teacher and class secretary in her younger years at the church. Her entire Gilreath family attended the church for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was prededed in death by her husband, Walter Benton Austin; two children Kathleen Austin and Howard Keener Austin; four grandchildren Jeffrey Austin Joseph Austin, Angela Austin and Teresa Lyall Betley; nine brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughters, Ruby A. Hayes, Barbara Anderson and husband C.H. and Elaine Lyall and husband Larry, all of Church Hill, Kathy Brooks and husband Bobby of Kingsport; sons, L. Bruce Austin and wife Peggy, Gene E. Austin and wife Elizabeth all of Kingsport and James M. Austin of Jonesboro; Fifteen grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a very special niece Mrs. Ernest (Mildred) Bishop.
Calling hours will be from 4-7 PM on Monday (April 23, 2007) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Friends may also call anytime at the residence at Misty Morning Circle (East Carters Valley).
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM Monday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Charles Kilbourne and Rev. David Salley officiating. Music will be provided by The Holder Family.
Entombment services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Oak Hill Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Doug Gilreath, Bill Gilreath, Wayne Smith, Larry Smith, Harold Gilreath and Maynard Ketron. Honorary pallbearers will be David Turner, Jim LaFollette, Carl Castle, Charles Dingus, Doug Ringley, Mark McCarty, M.J. McCarty, Jacob Austin, Jamie Austin, Michael Hayes, Patrick Hayes, Chad Austin, Randall Austin, Jon Calhoun, Jonathan Lawson and Jimmy McCoy.

SCOTT Co. VA - Effie Sue Bright Pippin, 70, of Scott County, Virginia, passed away at 8:11 pm on Thursday, September 28, 2006, at the home of her sister, Patsy Hood.
She was a member of Gardner Memorial Primitive Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy E. and Ruby Gardner Bright and two brothers, Joe "Buddy" Bright and Douglas Bright.
Surviving is her husband, Roby W. Pippin of the home; two daughters, Donna Sue and husband Alan Browning of Bristol, VA and Cynthia and husband Wayne Salyers of Hiltons, VA; four sons, Danny Pippin of Bluff City, Dana Pippin and wife Karen of Bristol, TN, Curtis Pippin and wife Kristi of Blountville and Harrison Pippin and wife Kristie of Nickelsville; fifteen grandchildren, Jeremy Pippin, Josh Pippin, Dustin Pippin, Ashley Pippin, Carmen Pippin, Amber Pippin, Steven Pippin, Isabella Pippin, Nathan Pippin, Justina Browning, Stephanie Browning, Rachel Crews,Courtney Salyers, Candra Salyers and Tailor Salyers; one great grandson, Jayden Daniel Pippin; three sisters, Margaret Crawford of Fall Branch, Teresa Smith of Kingsport and Patsy Hood of Bluff City; special aunt, Elsie Gardner of Hiltons, VA; special uncle, Mansey Gardner of Bristol, Va; a special son, Larry Hall of Bulls Gap, TN; special friends, Janie Hensley of Blountville and Audrey Hooven of Kingsport, along with several nieces and nephews.

George William Painter
Gate City, VA - George William “Billy” Painter, age 45, of the Yuma community, went to be with the Lord Monday evening, January 28, 2008 while at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was born February 21, 1962 a son of Bill Painter and the late Kathleen Young Painter. He was a 1980 graduate of Ketron High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church and was employed by Witt Drywall Company in Johnson City, TN. He was a basketball coach for 17 years in the Bloomingdale league and was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who loved camping and riding his Motorcycle on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
He is preceded in death by his infant sister: Lisa Ann Painter, mother in law: Shirley Fae Lane and brother in law: Frank Lane, Jr.
He is survived by his wife: Gracie Lane Painter
Daughter: Ashley Crawford and husband Dustin of Kingsport, TN,2 sons: William Hunter “Bill” Painter and Waylon Lane Painter of the home,2 grandchildren: Kailey and Lilly Crawford,Father and step mother: Bill Painter and wife Wanda of Chattanooga, TN,Brother: Gene Painter and wife Betty of Limestone, TN,Father in law: Frank Lane of the Yuma community,Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Mary Ann “Murk” Carter
Hiltons, VA - Mary Ann “Murk” Carter, age 74, went to be with the Lord early Monday morning, January 28, 2008 at her residence.
She was born May 8, 1933 in Wise County, VA a daughter of the late James Marlin and Myrtle Evangeline Laughlin Carter. She was a longtime and faithful member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. She was retired from Burlington Mills in Bristol, VA and was also known locally as a very special employee of the Big Break Exxon in Weber City, VA.
She is preceded in death by her: Brothers: J. W. Carter, Robert Carter and Jackie Dale Carter. Sisters: Matilee Carter, Eliza Juanita Cornett and Lois Carter Hensley. Nephew: Michael Cornett and great-nephews: Michael Paul Cornett and Daniel Cornett.
Survivors include: Special nephews: Mark Carter, whom she loved as a son.

The celebration of her life will be Thursday at 2PM in the Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Hiltons, VA with Rev. Randy Powers and Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Her body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes preceding the services. Music will be provided by Daryl Jayne and Dale and Teresa Jett.
The burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jesse Hensley, Tim Hensley, Phil Salyer, Dale Jett, Joey Salyer, Johnny Wolfe, Terry Olinger and Andrew Eldreth. I

Ronnie Stanley
Duffield, VA - Ronnie William Stanley, age 58, of the Mabe-Stanleytown Road, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, March 13, 2007 while at his residence.
He was born April 26, 1948, in Wise County, VA, a son of the late Johnny Emmitt and Allie Frazier Stanley. He was a longtime member of the Red Hill Memorial Church, and had worked for several years at the former Kingsport Press (Quebacor) until health issues forced his retirement. He was also well-known as a youth Recreation league baseball umpire in the Duffield and Rye Cove areas and from time to time enjoyed being a part of wrestling in the region appearing from gym to gym.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Darrell Stanley.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Shelia Faye (Minton) Stanley; son, John Henry Stanley of the home; daughter, Julie L. Miller and husband Richard of Church Hill, TN; brother, Lester Stanley and wife Dot of Surgoinsville, TN; sister, Edna Bowen and husband Elmer “Hub” of Duffield, VA; many dear loving nieces and nephews along with countless friends. Among the friends include Barbara Summey, a special friend and caregiver, Connie and Jeff Hensley and the staff of Mountain Region Personal Care. Robert Lane and Jack Caudill were also his special buddies.
Calling hours will be Thursday evening, March 15, 2007, from 5 until 7 at Scott County Funeral Home.
The funeral will follow at 7PM with Evangelist Garry Hood and Rev. Steve Rogers officiating. The music will be provided by the Hood Family and Courtney Rogers.
Burial will be Friday morning, March 16, 2007 at 11 AM in the Cox’s Chapel cemetery, Duffield, VA. It is requested that family and friends meet at the cemetery by 10:55 AM for those services. Pallbearers will be Robert Lane, Daniel Hunley, Jack Caudill, Matthew Hensley, Anthony Hensley, Charlie Shepherd and Jeff Hensley.
