Richard A. Bode, Jr., 92, of Richmond died Friday, February 2, 2007 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born August 14, 1914 in Fredericksburg, VA. He lived there until leaving to attend VPI in 1933. He graduated in 1937 as a member of the ROTC program with a B.A. in Business. He entered the military upon graduation and married
Martha Bunn Arrington in 1942. He was a member of the force that landed at Omaha Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944 . Dick and Martha Bunn had one son, Richard A. Bode, III in 1947. Dick was preceded in death, by his wife of 48 years, Martha Bunn, their son, Richard A. Bode, III and his stepson, John “Jack” Willis. Dick fell in love again at the age of 79 and married
Peggy Willis with whom he spent 14 wonderful years. In doing so, he gained 2 step-sons, Randy and Jack Willis, and Jack’s wife, Cathy and 2 step-grandchildren, Michael Willis, Annie Willis Hall and her husband, Wesley. Dick was loved by all who knew him and never failed to lift spirits of all he encountered. He will be dearly missed by friends and family. Dick was a member of County Line Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at County Line Baptist Church, Ruther Glen, VA. 22546 with Rev. Fred Skaggs officiating. Cleyon F. Pitts, Jr. 78 of Alps, in Caroline County, died Thursday February 1, 2007 in Mary Washington Hospital. A lifelong farmer in Caroline, he had also retired from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. Survivors include his wife, Leona Pitts; six children, Debbie Alexander of Mangohick, Mark Pitts of Alps, Ronald Pitts of Manquin, Rita Sibley of Chesterfield, Dennis Pitts of Central Garage and John Pitts of Alps; a brother, Paul Pitts of Alps; three sisters, Millie Fortune of Alps, Gaynelle Harris of Warrenton and Mary Pitts of Herndon; thirteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; five step children, Emma Stillwell and Janice Fortune both of Winchester, Charles Mefford of Strausburg and Erma Collins and Magdalene Meade both of Wise. A funeral service will be Monday, February 5th at 2:00 PM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with burial to follow in the Rollins Family cemetery in Alps. Kathleen Goodwin Ayers, 84 of Richmond died Saturday January 27, 2007. Born in Caroline County, she had retired after 20 years with the State Health Department. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, James R. Ayers and her sister, Louise Thornton of Fredericksburg. A graveside funeral will be held Monday January 29th at 2:00 PM in Greenlawn cemetery, Bowling Green. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Monday from 12 Noon until 1:30 PM. Francis M. Barlow, Sr. 89, of Ruther Glen died Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born in Caroline, he was the oldest child of Lewis W. and Pearl Barlow. He had retired as a farmer and drove trucks for F. M. Barlow, Jr. Hauling until his late 80’s. He was a lifetime member of Concord Baptist Church where he was ordained as a deacon at the age of 25.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Andrews Barlow; two sons, Francis M. Barlow, Jr. and his wife, Arlene and E. Michael Barlow and his wife Ramona; a daughter, Valerie B. Gordon and her husband, Bill all of Ruther Glen; four brothers, Lewis W. Barlow, Jr., Henry C. Barlow, C. Ray Barlow and Anthony E. Barlow all of Ruther Glen; three sisters, Dorothy B. Bullock of Mechanicsville, Iola B. Utz of Amelia and Shirley B. Minter of Powhatan; eight grandchildren, Crystal Rozell, Fran Satterwhite, Kevin and Keith Barlow, Cherie Marshall, Holly Woodward, Sarah Gordon and Laura Gordon and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Carter.

D. R. Jimmie Wright, 75 of Ruther Glen died Monday January 15, 2007 in Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born in Caroline County, he had retired after many years with Carter Brothers Tire Company. He was a member of Cardinal Baptist Church and was a veteran of United States Air Force. Survivors include his wife, Frances W. Wright; four sons; Dennis R. Wright and his wife, Cynthia of Hanover, Dewey R. Wright Jr. and his wife, Roseanne of Milford, Danny R. Wright and his wife, Sharon of Hanover and Michael R. Wright of Ruther Glen; thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. T. Norman Scripture, 88, of Paige in Caroline County died Sunday, January 14, 2007 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Born in Paige, he moved at the age of 5 to Alexandria with his parents, Mason and Birdie Scripture. He was a police officer with the Alexandria Police Department until he joined the U. S. Army and served in WWII in France and Germany. He moved back to Caroline in the mid 1970s, was a member of Ladysmith Baptist Church and had retired as an electrician with the Federal Government. Survivors include his wife, Lillian E. Scripture; a daughter, Norma Williamson and her husband, Clark; a grandson, Josh Williamson and his wife, Joy; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Beth Williamson. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 19, 2007 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Virginia with Rev. Jamie Eades officiating. James T. Kidd, 84 of Ruther Glen, died Tuesday January 9, 2007 in Mary Washington Hospital. He was the widower of Sabina “Beanie” Kidd and had retired after 38 years of service with Rappahannock Electric Co-op. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bowling Green and served in the Navy during WWII. Survivors include his children, James F. Kidd and Dale Pendleton both of Spotsylvania, Becky Adair of Ruther Glen and Susan Zeller of Eastern Shore, Maryland; his sister, Mabel Houston of Ruther Glen; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, John; his sisters, Frances Ella and Lucy Elizabeth and great grandson, Mason H. Marshall. A funeral service will be Saturday January 13th at 11:00 AM in Calvary Baptist Church, with Rev. David Johnson and Rev. Fred Zeller officiating. Bertha Loving Farmer, 97, of Ruther Glen died Saturday, January 6, 2007. Born in Caroline, she was the widow of Alfred Smith Loving and Gordon Keith Farmer. Her sister, Annie Mae Thomas died Friday, January 5, 2007. Survivors include nine children, Bill Loving, Geraldine Good, Doris Janey, James Loving, June Crowe, Herbert Loving, Franklin Loving, Raymond Loving, and Evelyn Loving; four sisters, Dorothy Browning, Ethel McNamara, Amelia Croswell, and Marvin Tucker. The total of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren is one hundred and twenty-one. On the wings of an angel, my mother, Annie Mae Taylor Thomas of Ruther Glen went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 5, 2007. Born July 9, 1910 in Caroline County, she was the 2nd daughter of James Burton Samuel and Katherine Seal Samuel. She was a faithful member of Concord Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for 60 years. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband, Leonard Roy Taylor and her 2nd husband, Malcolm Thomas. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Peggy Taylor Giles and her husband, Robert N. Giles; a granddaughter, Connie L. Dominey and her husband, Mark H. Dominey; three grandsons, Charles “Dean” Loving and his wife, Joyce S. Loving, Jeffrey B. Loving and his wife, Judy H. Loving and Mark R. Loving; five sisters, Virginia Bertha Farmer, Dorothy Browning, Ethel McNamara, Amelia Croswell, and Marvin Tucker; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Ivey A. Taylor Jr., 69 of Milford, died Friday October 10, 2008 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Danville, he retired as SFC E-7 with the United States Army. Following his retirement, he drove a fuel truck with E. M. Gray Oil Co. in Milford, for many years. Survivors include his wife, Diane J. Taylor; his mother, Frances Taylor of Danville; his son, James Taylor of Nevada; his daughter, Susan Taylor of Michigan; his sister, Linda Gibbs of Danville and seven grandchildren. A graveside funeral, with military honors, will be Thursday October 16th at 10:00 AM in Quantico National cemetery, Triangle VA. THOMAS M. SALISBURY, III (AGE 62)
On Friday, September 26, 2008, of Ladysmith, Virginia. He served his Nation proudly, and was a Viet Nam Veteran. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he continued to serve his country as a Russian Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. Army (Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence) until his retirement as a civilian employee in 1997.
Beloved son of the late CWO Thomas M. Salisbury and Mrs. Sadie L. Salisbury; brother of Mr. Charles C. Salisbury (Yvonne), Mr. William A. Salisbury, and Ms. Carol S. Hays (John); Uncle of Mr. Michael T. Stovall, Mr. David T. Salisbury (Nicole), Mr. Sterling M. Salisbury, Mr. Jonathan J. Salisbury, and Tracy L. Hays; and treasured friend of one cat, Skeeter, whom he loved dearly and brought him great joy during the tough times.
Mr. Salisbury was born on May 30, 1946, in Long Branch, New Jersey. He graduated from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, and also attended the Virginia Military Institute. He was a member of the Order of Indian Wars and a life member of the Society of Friends of Historic Fort Hays. He received the Editor’s Choice Award in 1995 and 1996, by the National Library of Poetry. He had several professional articles published in the Military Review and the Aviation Digest. “I have found historical settings sometimes frame thoughts best and convey depth in feelings often lost in the din of the times we live.” TMS
Mr. Salisbury died from complications following a long illness that he faced with great strength, dignity, and courage. He remained strong in his faith and his trust in God. His inurnment, with military honors, will be Thursday October 30th at 9:00 AM at the Columbarium in Arlington National cemetery.
Barbara D. Hylton, 69, of Bowling Green, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond. Barbara was the daughter of the late Carroll and Ruth Daughtrey. She was a graduate of the College of William and Mary and a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She taught math for a number of years and was the business manager for her husband’s dental practice. She was a member of St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church where she served on the Altar Guild, was a member of the choir and former Senior Warden of the Vestry. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Richard D. Hylton; a daughter, Lisa Sinz and her husband, Dave of Hershey, PA; a son, Rick Hylton and his wife, Sarah of Gloucester; a sister, Jean Myers of Westminster, MD; two brothers, Tom Daughtrey of Sandston and Lyman Daughtrey of Greenville, NC; six grandchildren, Abby Hylton, Ben Hylton, Gibson Hylton, Claire Sinz, Caroline Sinz, and Kate Sinz. Richard L. Walton, 77 of Ruther Glen, formerly of Falls Church, died Wednesday September 24, 2008. He attended Washington State University and received his MBA from the University of Georgia and retired as an economist with the Dept. of Commerce in Washington DC. He was a lay leader for 38 years at the Falls Church Episcopal Church and most recently attended St. James The Less Episcopal Church in Ashland. Survivors include his wife, Sally B. Walton; a son, The Rev. Richard Walton Jr and his wife, The Rev. Nancy Dixon Walton of Tallahassee FL; a daughter, Mary Tamsen Castle and her husband Donald Castle of Monroe NC; a brother Roger Walton and his wife Frances of Issaquah WA; two brothers in law, Donner Buchet and his wife, Sharon of Olney MD and Peter Buchet and his wife, Marilyn of Edmonds WA and two grandchildren Sophia Louise Walton and Richard Jeremiah Walton.
