Betty J. Chinault, 59 of Milford, died Sunday April 8, 2007. Survivors include her husband, Ernest Chinault; three daughters, Wendy Harless of Milford, Michelle Young of Mechanicsville and Tonya Brownfield of Asheboro NC; a son Ernest “Mickey” Chinault Jr. of Milford; three sisters, Brenda Layne and Faye Napier both of Ruther Glen and Marie Emerson of Doswell; a brother, Gene Donavon of Kents Store and nine grandchildren. Richard D. Silliman 79 of Lake Caroline in Ruther Glen VA, formerly of Derwood MD, died Wednesday March 14, 2007 at his home. Born in New York, he had retired from the Carpenter’s Union and most recently worked for Wackenhut as a security guard at Lake Caroline. Survivors include his children, Garien Storm of Huntsville AL, Steven Silliman of Washington DC, Rodney Silliman of Gaithersburg MD and Danell DeRocher of Sharpsburg MD; a brother, Roger Silliman of California; fourteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; numerous step-children and step-grandchildren and many close friends. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green VA, Saturday March 17, 2007 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a funeral service beginning at 7:00 PM.
Gladys E. Stephens, 81 of Ruther Glen died Monday March 12, 2007 in Richmond. Born in Caroline County, she had owned and operated The Old Tavern restaurant in Bowling Green for over 20 years. Survivors include her husband, Thomas F. Stephens; five children, Sue Russell of South Carolina, Peggy Sorensen of Fredericksburg, Judy Houchin of Salem, Leslie Huff of New Jersey and David Orrock of Bowling Green; two sisters, Daisy Stanley of Woodford and Dorothy “Sissy” Butler of Spotsylvania; one brother, Zack Thomas of Spotsylvania; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Eddie and Charlie Orrock. A funeral service will be held Friday March 16, 2007 at 1:30 PM in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Tommy Satterwhite officiating. Anna Bryant Barlow, 90 passed away peacefully Saturday March 10, 2007 at her home in Shumansville, Caroline Co. VA. The family she cherished and loved so much was at her side. She lived her life for God, her family, her church and her many loving friends. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Frank M. Barlow. Survivors include her three children, Lester Barlow and his wife, Joyce of Shumansville, Edward Barlow and his wife, Lucille of Richmond and Juanita B. Nicholson and her husband, Charles of Sandston; her brother, Garfield Bryant of Cumberland; three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Lannie Patrick “Pat” Smith of Bowling Green VA died Saturday March 3, 2007 at Westminster Canterbury, Richmond VA. Mrs. Smith was born in Ruther Glen VA, the daughter of the late Pearl Jefferson Cobb and George Kemp Coleman Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wood Smith. The couple owned and operated The Colonial Variety Store in Bowling Green for 27 years. After Mr. Smith’s death in 1966, Mrs. Smith continued to operate the business until her retirement in 1978. She attended Blackstone College and was a member of Bowling Green Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter Patricia S. Jones and husband, A. B. Jones Jr. of Richmond; a sister, Frankie Ottley of Lakewood Manor, Richmond. She was preceded in death by her son, John Kemp Smith and a brother, George Kemp Coleman Jr. Mrs. Smith delighted in her five granddaughters and their husbands, Kimberly and Jamie Walker of Richmond, Courtnie and Wayne Burrell of Ruther Glen, Andrea and Graham Cheek of Williamsburg, Rena and Paul Sharpe of Midlothian, Corey and Scott Oster of Derby, Kansas; twelve great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Harriet Hart Myers, 83, of Bowling Green died Thursday, March 1, 2007 at her home. Born in Balty, Mrs. Myers was a 1943 Caroline High School graduate and retired from the Federal Government. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles F. Myers; a special caregiver, Viola Wright Shelton; five nephews, John, Wayne, James, Kurt and Gordon; and 2 nieces, Tammie and Sue. Pearl T. Wright, 67 of Woodford, died Friday February 23, 2007 in Bowling Green Health Care Center. Survivors include her husband, William R. “Puddin” Wright Sr.; a daughter, Linda Taylor Fincher of King NC; a step daughter, Angel Lambert of Bowling Green; five sisters, Clara Wilson and Lois Jubb both of Glen Burnie MD, Betty Gernett of League City TX, Maude Kenworth of Rochester IL and Shirley Ketterman of Bowling Green; three brothers, R. Thomas Sylvia Jr. of Ocean View DE, Donald Sylvia of Winchester and James Sylvia of Glen Burnie MD; six grandchildren, Brandi Shiffert, Randy and Courtney Wright, Heather Logan and Jamie and Amanda Fincher; three great grandchildren, Trevor Shiffert, Tyler Logan and Kayla Fincher. Rodger D. Hudson, 59 of Beaverdam, formerly of Woodbridge, died Sunday February 18, 2007. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Hudson; two daughters, Vivian Hudson of Michigan and Lisa Jenkins of Woodbridge; a son, Rodger Hudson Jr. of Woodbridge; a sister, Darlene Messer of Michigan and three grandchildren, Christian, Isaiah and McKayla. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Sharpe and Jim Hudson. A graveside funeral will be held Wednesday February 28th at 11:00 AM in Quantico National cemetery, Triangle.
Myrtle Mae Martin 'Grandma' Farmer, 79, of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at Mary Washington Hospital. Survivors include three daughters, Lois Foster, Betty Archie and Louise Jett; two sisters, Pearl Flippo and Alice Owens; eight grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Nancy Sullivan and Frances Synan. A graveside service will be held 11 am. Friday, February 23, 2007 at Greenlawn cemetery.
Rev. Dr. Leonard Vanderveld Jr.
Dr. Vanderveld, 80, a resident of Woodford for the past 19 years, died Saturday February 17, 2007. He was born on July 28, 1926 in Paterson NJ. He graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in history in 1950 and in 1958 received a Master’s degree in school administration from William Paterson University of Wayne NJ. For additional studies he received Doctor of Ministry and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from International Seminary in Plymouth FL. Later he was awarded a Doctor of Religious Education degree and .an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Fredericksburg Bible Institute and Seminary, where he had been Academic Dean and Bible professor for over ten years.
He served as interim pastor of Flat Run Baptist Church in Locust Grove and prior to moving to Virginia, was an administrator and professor at Baptist Bible College and Seminary in Clarks Summit PA for 19 years. Prior to those years he was an elementary grade teacher and principal in the Franklin Lakes NJ public school system. Most recently, as a member of Round Oak Baptist Church in Corbin, he had served as a deacon, Bible teacher and on numerous committees.
During World War II, Dr. Vanderveld served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific theater and participated in the Okinawa invasion. He received a Second Lieutenant’s commission in the US Army through the ROTC and was recalled during the Korean War for overseas duty. He later served as a Special Agent with the Army CID during the Viet Nam War and retired, from the Army, as a Chief Warrant Officer. He served as a Captain in the Virginia Defense Force and was former Deputy Town Sergeant with the Bowling Green Police Department. For many years he was an NRA distinguished marksman and weapons instructor. In Pennsylvania, he served as a state forest fire warden and volunteer fire chief. For the past five years, he has served as Chairman of the Grants and Fellowship Committee of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation in Quantico. He was also a life member of the NRA, the Marine Corps Association and Spotsylvania Post 320 of the American Legion.
Survivors include his four children, Ralph Vanderveld of Scranton PA, Joy Hopper of Woodford, Rev. Timothy Vanderveld of Minneapolis MN and Mary Elizabeth Fanton of Dillsburg PA; eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Vanderveld Sr. and Ruth Sutton Vanderveld and his beloved wife Elaine “Jackie” Jackson Vanderveld.
A funeral service will be held Thursday February 22nd at 12 Noon in Round Oak Baptist Church, Corbin, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. James E. Snook, 78, of Ruther Glen died Friday, February 16, 2007 at his home. He was a U. S. Army retiree and had worked at USNWL at Dahlgren as a construction superintendent. Survivors include his wife, Margareta Snook; two sons, Thomas E. Snook and James E. Snook, Jr. a brother, Thomas Snook and many grandchildren. The family will receive friends 3- 6 p.m. Monday, February 19 at Margareta Snook’s home. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Angel L. Ramos, 53, of Ruther Glen died Monday, February 5, 2007 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, PA. Born in Puerto Rico, he had lived many years in Pennsylvania and had worked at Rees Industrial for many years. He and his wife, Betsy moved to Caroline County, VA 8 years ago and he worked at the Food Lion in Ladysmith, VA. Mr. Ramos was the son of the late Carmelo and Juana Ramos. He is survived by his wife, Betsy Ramos; a son, Nicholas Ramos and his wife, Ashley of Ruther Glen; a daughter, Kimberly Ramos of the home; four sisters, Maria, Rosa, Blanca, and Angela; five brothers, John, Benjamin, Tony, George, and Phillip; two grandchildren, Noah Ramos and Natalie Ramos. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, February 9, 2007 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green with Rev. Charles Tillapaugh officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday, February 8, 2007 at the funeral home. W. R. Brown, 87, of Bowling Green, formerly of Warsaw, died Thursday February 1, 2007 at the home of his son, with whom he made his residence. Born in Warsaw, he was the widower of Virginia Vanlandingham Brown and had retired after 45 years as a construction superintendent with what is now Verizon Telephone. Mr. Brown was a member of Cobham Park Baptist Church, served in the Army during WW II and was a member of the Warsaw VFW Post. Survivors include two sons, William Roland Brown Jr. of Annapolis MD and Tim S. Brown of Bowling Green; a sister, Dorothy Bowles of Warsaw; a brother, Elmer Durwood Brown of Mechanicsville; eleven grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Saturday February 3rd at 1:00 PM in Cobham Park Baptist Church, Warsaw, with Rev. Donald Bowen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Chrystal Ann Harley, 24 of Richmond died Friday February 2, 2007. Born in Woodbridge, she was a graduate of Caroline High School and received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from VCU in Richmond. She was employed as a Kindergarten teacher at Bowling Green Primary School. Survivors include her husband, Adalberto “Manny” Fermin of Richmond; her father, Joseph T. Harley of Triangle; her mother and step father, Robin and Stuart Jones of Milford; her sister, Susan James of Bowling Green; her brother, William Jones of Milford; her paternal grandfather, Joseph W. Harley Jr. of Fredericksburg and her maternal grandparents, James and Betty Goad of Bowling Green. A funeral service will be held Thursday February 8th at 11:00 AM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with burial to follow at 2:00 PM in Mt. Comfort cemetery, Alexandria.
