Charles C. Taylor, 74 of Sparta, died Wednesday November 14, 2007 in Tappahannock. He was the widower of Dorothy Taylor, a member of the Sparta Hunt Club and had retired from the Coast Guard. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Sisco of Ladysmith; four step-children, Archie Brooks Jr. of New York, James Brooks of Sparta, Lewis Brooks of Indiana and Nancy Gotobed of New York; a sister, Pearl Farmer of Fredericksburg; a brother, Frank Taylor of Bowling Green and two grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Friday November 16th at 2:00 PM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. Kevin James officiating. Burial will follow in Salem Baptist Church, Sparta. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Thursday, 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
James S. Patton, age 88, of “Gay Mont”, near Port Royal, died Monday, November 5, 2007. A native of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, he moved to Washington, D.C. in 1941 to take a clerical position with the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. At the close of World War II he served for a short period in the Army of Occupation in Japan. Mr. Patton retired in 1981 after thirty-six years as financial secretary/business manager of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, and lived for many years in Alexandria. He was married
to Frances Bernard Upton whose family owned “Gay Mont” from the 1790’s. Prior to her death in 1981, they had given the property and contents of the house to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA), retaining a life estate for themselves. Mr. Patton is survived by one sister, Patricia Lawrence of Thiensville, Wisconsin and five nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to a memorial service to be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Port Royal at 2 PM Saturday, November 10, 2007 and to the interment following at the family cemetery at “Gay Mont”. Teresa Johnson Houston, 44, of Stafford, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007. Survivors include two daughters, Melissa Houston of Fredericksburg and Amber Houston of Rappahannock Academy; her mother and step-father, Sadie and Franklin Tate Hicks of Rappahannock Academy; and three grandchildren, Alexis Houston, Mark Stewart, and Taylor Rakes. A memorial service will be held 3 PM Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Four Winds Club, Rapphannock Academy, VA.
Henry E. “Ernie” Ketner II, 53 of Ruther Glen, died Sunday October 28, 2007 at his home, surrounded by family. Survivors include his wife, Mary Tyus Ketner; two sons, Matthew Lee Ketner and his wife, Aimee of Greenbelt MD and Mark Lewis Ketner and his wife, Flourette of Port Royal; his mother, Frances Smith of Ashland; a sister, Becky Gilman of Ashland; a brother, Robert M. Ketner III of Ruther Glen; numerous nieces and nephews and his “adopted” sister, Renee Lickey. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Friday November 2nd from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. Josephine A. Coghill, 88 of Port Royal, died Friday October 26, 2007 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Port Royal, she was the widow of Roy Atwell Coghill and a long-time member of Memorial Baptist Church. Jo had retired in 1998 from Hornes Restaurant in Port Royal as a waitress, after 37 years of service. She was well known and loved at her job and her co-workers referred to her as “Momma Duck” because of her nurturing manner toward them. Survivors include three children, Barbara Weedon of Richmond, Kenneth Coghill of Port Royal and Gary Coghill of Port Royal; a sister, Lois Garrett of Rappahannock Academy; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Billy Coghill. A funeral service will be held Monday October 29 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with burial to follow in Greenlawn cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Sunday 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Port Royal Vol. Fire Dept.
Chris MadsenChristopher M. Madsen, 23 of Caroline County Virginia died Monday October 22, 2007. He was employed as a Meter Technician with Rappahannock Electric Co-op, was a member of Clifton Hunt Club and was the sound and stage man for two local bands, “The Home Grown Band” and “The Single Barrel Band”. Survivors include his parents, Chris and Julie Madsen of Port Clinton Ohio; two sisters, Carissa Madsen and Nicole Shukeat both of Port Clinton Ohio; a half-sister Misty Siemore of Columbus Ohio; his maternal grandparents, Larry and Della Dubbert of Port Clinton Ohio and aunts and uncles, Sherry and Adam Lentz of Caroline County Virginia, Michelle Madsen and Jeff Laurencell of Chicago Illinois, Rebecca and Glenn Hall, Mark Dubbert and Laurie Kruse and James and Dawn Dubbert all of Port Clinton Ohio; and 5 nephews and 4 nieces. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Friday October 27, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. A graveside service will be held Monday in Port Clinton, Ohio.
Max C. Smith, 84 of Colonial Beach VA, formerly of South Mountain PA, died October 18, 2007 in Bowling Green Health Care Center. Survivors include four children, David Smith of Hagerstown MD, Harold Smith of Tampa FL and Jeff Smith and Evelyn Smith both of Fayetteville PA and several grandchildren. Mr. Smith was cremated and no service is planned at this time.
Evelyn Carter Boulware, 81 of Milford died Sunday October 21, 2007 in Fairfax Nursing Center. She was the widow of Hugh Boulware and was a life time member, Elder and Sunday school teacher at Milford Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her daughter, Diane Payne and her husband Tom of Fairfax; her sisters, Hilda Crabtree and Patsy Clow both of Bowling Green; her brothers Nathan Carter of Glen Allen and Roy Carter of Fredericksburg; three grandchildren, Stephanie Payne of Frederick MD, Angela Payne of Los Angeles CA and Caroline Payne of Fairfax and a great grandson, Kevin Thomas Ross of Frederick MD. A funeral service will be held Thursday October 25th at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. Howard Leming officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery. Marshall T. Ernest, 80 of Bowling Green died Tuesday, October 16, 2007 in Mary Washington Hospital. An Army veteran of WWII, he retired after 43 years of service with Foreign and Domestic Woods. He is survived by his wife, Rose E. Ernest; three children, David M. Ernest and his wife, Amy of Ruther Glen; Patricia Ann Ernest of McLean, and Sandra Smith and her husband, Norman of Oakridge, TN; and two grandchildren, Ashley R. Smith and Kevin M. Tammy Ann Wong, 40, of Lottsburg, died Sunday, October 14, 2007 at her home. Survivors include her son, Mark Wong of Sparta and his fiancé`, Shania Maynard, her father, Benny Howard of Sparta, a brother, Joe Wong and his wife, Tonia and a sister, Jamie Howard all of Sparta, a granddaughter, Gabrielle Wong, a companion, Amy White of Lottsburg and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, October 21, 2007 at Salem Baptist Church, Sparta, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
William L. Kay, 77, of Ruther Glen, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born in Fort A. P. Hill, he was the widower of Helen Freeman Kay. He had retired from VDOT with 26 years of public service. Survivors include two daughters, Marie Kay Martin of Ruther Glen (formerly of Richmond) and Diane Kay of Fredericksburg; three sisters, Lola Roach of Richmond, Gladys Kay Satterwhite and Margaret “Billy” Satterwhite both of Beaverdam; two brothers, James A. “Peter” Kay of Ladysmith and Robert Gordon Kay of Gum Tree, a grandson, Christopher Kay and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, October 19, 2007 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery. Steward W. Durrett, 80 of Ladysmith died Friday October 12, 2007. He worked for Greenline in Fredericksburg for many years and enjoyed traveling in the mountains. Survivors include his wife, Laura Durrett; seven children, Rose Mosley of Beaverdam, Stuart “Stump” Durrett of Montpelior, David Durrett of Chesterfield, Dennis Durrett of Woodford, Paul Durrett of Ashland, Susie Surles of Ruther Glen and Jeffrey Durrett of Woodford; four sisters, Mildred Durrette of Ladysmith, Marie Somers of Ruther Glen, Rachel Rowley of Spotsylvania and Doris Taylor of Ruther Glen; one brother, Lawrence Edward Durrett of Ashland; thirteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday October 17 at 11:00 AM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with burial to follow in County Line Baptist Church cemetery. Estell J. Clark, 95, of Alps, died Friday, October 5, 2007 at Bowling Green Health Care Center. Born in Alps, she was the widow of James Overton Clark. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Andrews of Ruther Glen and Mary Jones of Woodford.; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 2 PM Monday, October 8, 2007 at Rollins Family cemetery, Alps, VA. Final respects may be paid 5-7 Pm Sunday, October 7, 2007 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.
J. Helen Pertgen, 90, formerly of Nutley, New Jersey died Monday, October 1, 2007 at Mary Washington Hospital. Mrs. Pertgen was residing with her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Edward DeShong in Lake Land ‘Or. She was the widow of Joseph Robert Pertgen. In addition to her daughter, Barbara, she is also survived by a son, Robert Pertgen; two brothers, Harry Ehring and Ralph Parker; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Pertgen and a son, Richard Pertgen. The family will receive friends at the church Thursday, 10:30-11:45 AM. A funeral mass will be held Thursday, 12 Noon October 4, 2007 at St. Mary of the Annunciation in Ladysmith. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Woodford, VA. A reception will be held following the burial at the Parish Hall at 1:45 PM.
Leonard W. Reel, 23 of Bowling Green died Wednesday September 26, 2007. He was Deputy Sheriff with the Caroline Sheriffs Office. Survivors include his parents, Myra and William Conley of Ruther Glen; his sister, Patricia Breese and her husband, Paul of Ruther Glen; his brother, Dwight Reel II and his wife Jenn of Ruther Glen; his daughter, Ciarra Blount-Reel of Ruther Glen; his step grandparents, Ella and Buster Durrette of Ruther Glen and numerous nieces and nephews. A combined memorial service with his fiancée will be held Friday September 28 at 7:00 PM in Bowling Green United Methodist Church, with Rev. Charles Tillapaugh officiating. Annie M. Rollins, 78 of Milford died Tuesday September 25, 2007. A longtime member and Deaconess of St. Stephens Baptist Church, she had retired after 21 years with the Caroline County School System. Survivors include her husband, William “Himmer” Rollins Sr.; three daughters, Doris Fortune of Richmond, Pamela Scott of Milford and Juanita Schneiber of Pennsylvania; a son, William “Dickie” Rollins of Milford; two sisters, Susie Goodwin of Ashland and Virginia Pitts of San Francisco; three brothers, Francis Richardson of Bowling Green, Robert Richardson of Central Point and Grover Richardson of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Saturday September 29 at 11:00 AM in St. Stephens Baptist Church, Central Point, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
