Charles Raymond Bruce, 90 of Woodford died Wednesday January 2, 2008 at his home. Born in Caroline County, he was a 1937 graduate of Mica High School and was the widower of Virginia Blackburn Bruce. An avid hunter, fisherman and gardener, he loved the outdoors and farming. He had retired after 25 years from Massaponax Sand and Gravel. She is survived by two sisters, Ruth B. Finney of Spotsylvania and Rachel B. Farmer and her husband, Emmett Farmer of Port Royal; two nieces, Carol H. Vaughn and her husband, Peter M. Vaughn of Woodford and formerly of Richmond and Marsha H. Jordan and her husband, Max Jordan; two nephews, William Finney, Jr. and his wife, Pat of Fayetteville, NC and Dennis Wayne Bruce of Ruther Glen; and a brother-in-law, Mansell Edward Hosey of Mechanicsville. A funeral service will be held 2 PM Saturday, January 5, 2008 in the chapel of Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Lakewood cemetery, Bowling Green. Mary Alice Coker 80, of Hanover died Saturday December 29, 2007 in Amherst County. Born in Caroline, she was a lifelong member of Concord Baptist Church in Frog Level, member of the Mizpah Chapter #32 Order of Eastern Star and had retired from Phillip Morris. She was the widow of Nathan F. Coker Sr. Survivors include her son, N. Frank Coker Jr. and his wife Donna of Glen Allen; her daughter, Patty Coker Lynch of Midlothian; her granddaughter, Hillary Young and her husband Scott of Midlothian and two granddaughters, Morgan and Julia. Louise Vaughan Hart, 91, of Fairfax, Virginia died Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, VA. She was the daughter of the late John and Sadie Vaughan of Caroline County, VA. She was a lifelong member of Bethany Baptist Church. Survivors include, two children, Linda Hart McAndrew of Oak Hill, VA and Bill Hart of Fairfax, VA; one sister, Kathryn David of Bethesda, MD; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She lived for many years in Washington, DC before moving to Fairfax, VA. She spent many happy years owning and operating an antique shop first at Thieves’ Market, then at Mt. Steven T. “Tommy” Marr, 54 of Woodford, died Sunday December 23, 2007 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Washington D.C., he was a carpenter and a Navy veteran of the Viet Nam era. Dorothy Turner Gravatt, 99, of Bowling Green died Monday, December 17, 2007 at her home. She was the widow of Lulie C. Gravatt. They were married
for 50 years and they resided at “Woodpecker Farm” in Woodford until 1963. She is survived by her children, Nancy G. Pugh and her husband, Ken of Hoffman Estates, Ill., Luther C. Gravatt, Jr. and his wife, Frances of Ocean Isle, NC, Mary G. Bowie of Woodford, Dorothy G. Ryan of Virginia Beach, and Jean G. Upshaw and her husband, Tommy of Bagby; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy “Dottie” R. Gravatt of Salem, Ind. sixteen grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Dolores B. Gravatt of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Ernest “Ernie” H. Gravatt, two sons-in-law, Carlyle B. Bowie and Thomas R. Ryan, III, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Born in Richmond, she was the daughter of the late George Ernest Turner and Mary Alice Snead Turner. She was a graduate of John Marshall High School and attended Agnes Scott College of Decatur, Georgia. In her later years, she was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting, crocheting, working crossword puzzles and playing duplicate bridge. Lawrence E. Durrett Jr. 76 of Ashland, died Friday December 14, 2007. Born in Caroline, he had retired after 32 years with CSX, spending 20 of those years in Jacksonville, Florida. Roger Edwards, General Registrar of Caroline County for nearly 25 years, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at his home in Bowling Green VA. The Pulaski, Virginia native came to Caroline as an Trooper with the Virginia State Police following discharge from The United States Marine Corp. Subsequent to 10 years of active duty with the VSP, he found a new calling to public service when he was appointed to the position of General Registrar of Caroline County on April 1, 1983. With a career of distinguished longevity, Roger acquired a wealth of knowledge and information that he would gladly share with his peers, regardless of their tenure. In his work, the State Board of Elections was known to call him for his opinion on potential changes. Through his career he came to be highly respected by his peers around the commonwealth, serving as a mentor for others in similar positions. Roger, predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Mildred Edwards, is survived by his sisters, Sissy Pope of Pulaski and Susan Caviness of Dublin; his brothers, Terry Edwards of Georgia and Michael and Jimmy Edwards both of Pulaski and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 15th at 11:00 AM in Bowling Green Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Jesse Stanley Russell, 84, died November 26, 2007, in Bowling Green. Born in Vermont, Mr. Russell had lived in Bowling Green for nearly 60 years, serving as principal of Lee Maury School, Caroline Elementary School and Caroline Academy until his retirement from education in 1977. A veteran of World War II, he had enlisted in the U.S. Navy after Pearl Harbor and served aboard the U.S.S. Keith in the destroyer escort service throughout the war, and was stationed in Shanghai during the post-war occupation of China. He attended the University of Virginia briefly before the war, and returned to complete his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education after his honorable discharge. Mr. Russell was active in civic life in Bowling Green and Caroline County as a member of the Lion’s Club and Ruritan Club, and was an ardent supporter and volunteer leader of youth activities, such as the Little League and the Boy Scouts. He earned the Silver Beaver Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America for distinguished service as Scoutmaster of Troop 173. He was also an active member and leader of Post 10295 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bowling Green. His wife of 52 years, Marian Pauline Mueller Russell, predeceased him. Survivors include his sons Robert, of Blacksburg, Virginia, and Jeffrey, of Austin, Texas; his daughter Cynthia, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; grandsons Alan and Darrell Russell; Robert’s wife, Meriel; and Cynthia’s partner, Judith Lovat. His ashes will be interred at Quantico National cemetery and at sea at later dates, as were his wishes. Elman Short, 60 of Woodford, died Monday November 19, 2007 at his home. Born in West Virginia, he had retired from Automatic Rolls in Fredericksburg. J. Stuart Martin, 68 of Ruther Glen, died Saturday November 17, 2007 at his home. Born in Upper Zion, which is an area now a part of Ft. A.P. Hill, he was a lifelong member, Elder and Assistant Treasurer of Milford Presbyterian Church and served in the U. S. Army in Germany. He began his career in the grocery business at age 17 as a bagboy with Safeway in Bowling Green. He left Safeway in 1971, after rising to the position of district manager, to operate the grocery store in Carmel Church called Carmel Self Service. After his retirement, he remained active in several other business ventures and in his community. He was a former President of the Lake Caroline Property Owners Association, member of the Caroline Chamber of Commerce, founding member of the Investors Exchange Club, member of the Carmel Church Sub Area Planning Committee, and currently served on the Industrial Development Authority. Several years ago he led a group of businessmen that was instrumental in getting public utilities to the Carmel Church area. Survivors include his wife, Jackie Martin; two children, Courtney Fremstad and Jared Martin both of Ruther Glen; two sisters, Mildred Aguilar of California and Pearl Edwards of North Carolina; an aunt, Daisy Houston of Partlow and three grandchildren, Madalena, Mason and Elijah Fremstad. A funeral service will be Wednesday, November 21st at 2:30 PM in the auditorium of the Caroline Community Center on Richmond Turnpike south of Bowling Green.
