Milford resident Mary Ann Holt, nee O’Hara, took up painting at the age of 40 and pursued it with passion until her death on Jan. 6, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, after a short illness. She was 67.
Mrs. Holt was particularly adept at the “tole” style of decorative painting, but she painted landscapes and accepted other commissions as well. Mrs. Holt taught art at M.J. Design and the Bowling Green Library, and was a past president of the Old Dominion Decorative Painters, based in Richmond.
Mrs. Holt’s husband, Stephen, and three children remember her best as the matriarch of a large, close family she oversaw with extraordinary gentleness, even as a young mother during the Viet Nam War, when her husband was away for 18 months on tours of duty in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Says her son, Mark, “I have never met a nicer human being. She was always thinking about other people.”
Mrs. Holt moved to Milford 16 years ago with her husband, a retired Air Force colonel. They met in 1957 at a dance at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he was a cadet. Mrs. Holt, a native of Denver, Colorado, attended Loretto Heights College in Denver before her marriage in 1960.
The Holts lived in Europe and Asia as well as the United States, and they relished their peripatetic life. Friendly and curious, Mrs. Holt never confined herself to the military community. She taught English at a Japanese college near Tokyo, and restored an old country house in Abilene, Texas, with local antiques.
But then, after a few years, a new assignment would come through and the family would move on. As often as not, Mrs. Holt found herself not only in a new place, but with virtually a new life.
In 1980, while her husband was stationed at the Pentagon and the family was living in Springfield, Va., Mrs. Holt began to take art classes, and she caught fire.
She had finally found something she could pursue no matter where she was, and she created works of great intricacy and grace. Tole painters strive to create useful objects, and Mrs. Holt showed her boxes, trays and shelves at many craft fairs around Virginia over the years.
At the time of her death, she was active in the Old Dominion Decorative Painters’ effort to provide decorated “memory boxes” to hold mementos for families who have lost infants. She was also a member of the National Society of Decorative Painters. An avid reader, she was a longtime participant in the Book Lovers Club of Bowling Green.
Mrs. Holt is survived by her husband, her sons Mark (Micki) and Kevin (Natalie), daughter Julia Winans, and nine grandchildren-- Tucker, Lucas and Jillian Holt; Lindsay, Hudson and Kylie Holt; and Samantha, Nicole and Brian Michalick, all of Virginia.
