Before coming to King George, she worked as a home agent for families in Richmond County.
After retiring, Mrs. Rucker opened in the side yard of her home a flower shop in a white cottage modeled after Patrick Henry's Red Hill retirement home in Charlotte County.
Customers came from all around Caroline County and beyond to buy "Flowers by Georgie" arrangements and fresh flowers.
Mrs. Rucker served as president of the Caroline Garden Club from 1974 to 1976.
Described by a family member as a "true Southern matriarch", she was the last of a generation of the George W. Shelton family of the rural Weal community in Pittsylvania County.
Known to some as Mrs. Rucker, Georgie to others, Ma, Grandma or Aunt Georgie to family, she raised two nephews and a niece as her own sons and daughter.

Fred Stevens, 56, of King George, a Spotsylvania County teacher and former Extension Service farm agent in Essex County, remembers how Mrs. Rucker helped him win a blue ribbon at the state fair in 4-H Club competitive speaking.
"She was a you-can-do-it 4-H Leader", Stevens said. "She got me into public speaking as a 10-year-old and took me to the state fair. I remember being in her office. She would have me standing there for an hour reciting my speech. At the fair, I even beat 14-year-olds."
As a senior at King George High School, Stevens wanted to go to Virginia Tech, but a guidance counselor advised him against applying. He talked with Mrs. Rucker. "She said, you are going to Virginia Tech." They filled out the application and she mailed it for him. Stevens is a 1967 graduate of Virginia Tech, where he earned a degree in biology. "Other than my parents, she was the single most influential person in my life. She always believed in me, " he said.
