Freida Ilene Long Benser, 85, of Bowling Green, formerly of Baltimore and Roanoke, departed this life Tuesday, December 23, 2003.
She is survived by a sister, Violet Wiggins of Charlottesville; a brother, Garth Long of Bluefield, WV; a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Sharon Benser of Bowling Green;a daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and Michael Lasky of Forest Hill, Md; five grandchildren, Father Michael Lasky, Kathryn Adkins, Danielle Lasky, Lisa Smith and Stephanie Sprouse; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Adkins; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, Dec. 26, at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Interment will be at 3 PM Friday in Delaney Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Timonium, MD. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 AM at the funeral home

William E. "Bill" Broaddus, 88, of Salem, formerly of Bowling Green died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Lewis Gale Medical Center.
The son of the late Eugene and Blanche Ennis Broaddus of Bowling Green, he graduated from Lee Maury High School. After graduating, he completed a course at Corning Electrical School. He was employed by Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth from 1940 until he returned to Bowling Green in 1974.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Anne Campbell Broaddus. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Blanche Blanton and Jean Mahon, and a brother, Wilbur J. Broaddus, all of Bowling Green.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne Broaddus Harris of Swan Valley, Idaho; a son, William E. Broaddus Jr. of Union Hall; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2003 at Bowling Green Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kevin Moen officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood cemetery, Bowling Green.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.

Walter H."Buck"Pickett, 85, of Ruther Glen, died Tuesday, December 16, 2003 in Richmond.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth S. Pickett; two children, Frances P. Carlson of Ruther Glen and William O. Pickett of Martinez, Georgia; a brother, Arthur A. Pickett of Ashland; a sister, Lottie P. Garnett of Ruther Glen; four grandchildren, Natalie C. Drawdy, Julie A. Carlson, Shawn A. Pickett and Chris A. Pickett and three great grandchildren, Andrew, Brian and Catherine Drawdy.

Lila H. Dolinger, 73, while at home in Beaverdam, went to be with the Lord at sunrise on Tuesday, December 16, 2003.
Mrs. Dolinger was a member of Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, James M. Dolinger; two daughters, Diane D. Woodall and Debra A. Burba, both of Burke; a son, David A. Dolinger of Centreville; two brothers, John I. Hardy, Jr. and Alvin A. Hardy, Sr.; eight grandchildren, Brian Woodal, Jennifer Burba Keenaghan and her husband, Brian, Maureen Bell, Stephanie Dolinger, Kimberly Woodall, Jessica Burba and Colleen Dolinger. Two sisters, Peggy H. Williamson and Audrey H. Perkinson, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 20, at 2 p.m. at Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Tillapaugh officiating.

Stephen Gaby, 87, of Woodford, died Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Bowling Green Health Care Center.
Mr. Gaby, was born December 21, 1915 in Buffalo, Ohio to John and Mary Gaby, who were born in Czechoslovakia. He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945. He served as a Corporal with the Allied Forces in Italy in the Army Air Forces. He retired as a carpenter with Hopke Construction Company. He was a caretaker for many years for St. Cyril and Methodius cemetery and was an active member at St. Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Ladysmith.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Theresa Parisek Gaby; two daughters and their husbands, Jean and Perry Martini of Annapolis, Maryland and Joan and Mike Duvall of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Veronica Dzuris of Sterling Heights, Minnesota and Mary Vierik of Clawson, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Stephen Collins, Carly Duvall, Christine Duvall, Elizabeth Duvall, and Bernadette Mitchell; and two great grandchildren, Zackerie Russell and Andrea Jean Mitchell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie Gaby.
A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, December 18, at 11:00 AM in St. Mary of the Annunciation, with burial to follow in St. Cyril and Methodius cemetery, Woodford.

Waltraud M. Ford, 62, of Milford, died Friday, December 12, 2003 in Heritage Hall, King George.
Survivors include her three sons; Homer, Dennis and Jeff Ford; one sister, one brother and six grandchildren.

William George Simulcik, Sr. 89, of Woodford died Friday, December 12, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Simulcik was general manager of Interstate United Corporation Restaurants of New York City at Rockefeller Center for 47 years before becoming a supervisory stationary engineer at Rockefeller Center where he enjoyed participating and supervising the annual tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center. He and his wife, Grace retired to Woodford, Virginia in 1985.
Born September 23, 1914, Mr. Simulcik was along with his wife, Grace E. Simulcik was an active member of St. Mary's of the Annunciation Catholic Church. They were married
for 66 years and enjoyed an active family life along with their children, William G. Simulcik, Jr. Grace E. Valconi, Garrett P. Simulcik and Richard A. Simulcik (deceased). He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Latka and Pauline Getek; eight grandchildren, Richard A. Simulcik, Billy J. Simulcik, Garrett P. Simulcik, Eric J. Simulcik, John W. Simulcik, Debbie A. Landsnes, Diana M. Valconi, and Andrea L. Simulcik; and two great grandchildren, David William Landsnes and Thomas Michael Landsnes.
Mr. Simulcik was a man of many talents, his greatest was his wit, personality and dedication to family and friends. He was one of a kind and loved by all.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday at St. Mary's of the Annunciation in Ladysmith with Father Scott Duarte officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery.

Hunter W. Davis, Sr. 79, of Ruther Glen, died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Bowling Green Health Care Center.
He was the widower of Esther Durrett Davis. He is survived by his son, Hunter W. Davis, Jr. and his wife, Elaine Dunn Davis, a brother, James Gordon; and a sister, Caroline Quinnell.

Ollie W. Layne, 94, of Ruther Glen died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 in Richmond. Born in Ashland, Mrs. Layne was a lifelong member of Independence Christian Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Layne and her daughter, Anna Hayes.
Survivors include her grandsons, Audubon L. and William Wayne Hayes; her great grandsons, Jason and Brandon Hayes and her son-in-law, Harold Hayes all of Ruther Glen and numerous nieces and nephews.

Julian H. Gatewood, 84, of Woodford died Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Caroline, he had retired from General Products and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy E. Gatewood; four children, Nathan Gatewood of Woodford, Louise Carter of Ruther Glen, Sue Terry of Woodford and Brenda Kile of Ruther Glen; a sister, Elna Treblic of Woodford; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Melvin Gatewood.

Dr. Arthur Joseph Martin, 92, of Bowling Green, died Wednesday, December 4, 2003 at his home. Dr. Martin served God, his family, patients and his community. He was a native of Presque Isle, Maine and came to Caroline County and the medical profession in a round about way. After graduating from high school in Waterford, Connecticut, the 16 year old decided to move to Manhatten and lived with his older brothers. An accomplished jazz guitarist and musician, he was able to find work with the big bands that were popular in the late 20's. The 13 piece orchestra played at charity balls and at prep school socials. They were often led by a "big name' such as Rudy Vallee, Will Osborne or Eddie Duchen.
World War II interrupted Dr. Martin's musical career and he decided to enter medicine. He graduated from MCV at age 40. He also graduated Phi Beta Kappa. While in Richmond, he met his wife of 40 years, Frances Elizabeth Sheffield. He began his practice in Bowling Green, where he practiced for 32 years. He was truly one of our last "country doctors". He also served as Medical Examiner for Caroline for a number of years. Dr. Martin served on the Board of Directors for Caroline Savings Bank for 30 years and served as Secretary of the Mid-Tidewater Medical Society for 20 years.
In 1976, Dr. Martin's play, The Old Mansion, was performed which he also wrote all the music for. This endeavor took three years and was in celebration of the Bicentennial.
Survivors include his daughter, Peggy Sheffield Martin Wholey; his son-in-law, Michael Gerard Wholey; his grandson Arthur Barrett Martin Wholey; his nieces, Thelma Malone and Margaret Gallant and his nephew, Henry Barker.

Ruth Jones Hockaday, 82, of Woodford, died Monday, December 1, 2003 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Caroline County, she was the widow of Herman E. Hockaday, Sr.
Survivors include nine children; Arlene Kubacki of Richmond, Charlotte Storm of Partlow, Phyllis Acors of Fredericksburg, Wanda McAllister of Spotsylvania, Nancy Hart of Doswell, Patsy Overton of Spotsylvania, Wayne Hockaday of Milford, George Hockaday of Woodford and Donald Hockaday of Spotsylvania; two sisters, Grace Anderson of Woodford and Marian Griffin of Alexandria; thirty-two grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Herman E. Hockaday, Jr.

Myrtle Belle Edenton Payne, 87, of Chilesburg passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at her home.
Born in Partlow, she was the widow of Raymond "Tiny" Payne and was a member of County Line Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Charles Raymond Payne and his wife, Linda, of Chilesburg; four grandchildren, Deborah M. Collins, Bill Marrs, Heidi P. Arkenbout and Heather P. Sacra; six great grandchildren, Sarah and Rachel Arkenbout, Joshua and Jordan Sacra, Chastin Collins and Shannan Marrs; her son-in-law, Billy Marrs of Fredericksburg; a special niece, Barbara P. Satterwhite; and other nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Alease Marrs; her sisters, Madge Golay and Nancy Smith; and a brother, Chick Edenton.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 16, at County Line Baptist Church, with Dr. Fred Skaggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ruth Billmire Brooks, 89, of Bowling Green, died Sunday, December 11, 2005 in Bowling Green Health Care Center. Born in Baltimore, she had retired as a hairdresser after many years. She was an artist, crafter and avid reader.
Survivors include three children, Charles L. Diamond, Dorothy Lee Brooks and Robert Neal Brooks.
