John Randolph "Duff" Allen, 85, of Penola died Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at Carriage Hill Nursing Home.
Mr. Allen worked many years at Blanton Trucking Company in Milford and as a mechanic at Fort A.P.Hill. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was in the 29th division in the U.S. Army during WWII.
Survivors include a step-daughter, Bonnie Leber of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Woodfork Allen; three nephews, Wickham B. Coleman, Charles Hugh Stevens and Randolph Stevens all of Ruther Glen; and three nieces, Charlotte Hart Herndon of Ashland, Esther Stevens of Ruther Glen and Delores Allen McCann of Richmond. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Douglas Allen Coleman.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Friday at County Line Baptist Church, Ruther Glen with Rev. Fred Skaggs officiating.
The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.

Ernest Lynwood "Lyn" Upshaw, Jr., 75 of Bagby died April 12, 2003 in Memorial Regional Medical Center, Mechanicsville.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Barbara Jean Schools Upshaw; his daughter, Barbara Lyn Barnes; his son, Ernest L. "Woodie" Upshaw, III and his wife, Suzanne; five grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth, Samantha Jean and Joshua Eldred Upshaw and Amanda Lyn "Mandi" and Margaret Jean "Maggi" Barnes all of Mechanicsville; his sister, Anne Wright and brother Tommy Upshaw of Caroline. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest L. Upshaw, Sr., mother, Bertha G. Upshaw and brother, Eldred Upshaw.
Lyn was a longtime member of Shiloh UMC, cooking his cornbread for all the churches and organizations and a retiree of E.G. Wade, Jr., Inc. after 32 years of service. He loved all his children and grandchildren dearly and truly cherished all his friends and acquaintances he met along the way.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. Terry Clark officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Shiloh UMC cemetery.

William George Simulcik, Sr.89, of Woodford died Friday, December 12, 2003 at Mary Washington Hospital.
Mr. Simulcik was general manager of Interstate United Corporation Restaurants of New York City at Rockefeller Center for 47 years before becoming a supervisory stationary engineer at Rockefeller Center where he enjoyed participating and supervising the annual tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center. He and his wife, Grace retired to Woodford, Virginia in 1985.
Born September 23, 1914, Mr. Simulcik was along with his wife, Grace E. Simulcik was an active member of St. Mary's of the Annunciation Catholic Church. They were married
for 66 years and enjoyed an active family life along with their children, William G. Simulcik, Jr. Grace E. Valconi, Garrett P. Simulcik and Richard A. Simulcik (deceased). He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Latka and Pauline Getek; eight grandchildren, Richard A. Simulcik, Billy J. Simulcik, Garrett P. Simulcik, Eric J. Simulcik, John W. Simulcik, Debbie A. Landsnes, Diana M. Valconi, and Andrea L. Simulcik; and two great grandchildren, David William Landsnes and Thomas Michael Landsnes.
Mr. Simulcik was a man of many talents, his greatest was his wit, personality and dedication to family and friends. He was one of a kind and loved by all.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday at St. Mary's of the Annunciation in Ladysmith with Father Scott Duarte officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery.
A rosary will be held 7:00 PM Sunday at St. Mary's of the Annunciation.

Hunter W. Davis, Sr. 79, of Ruther Glen, died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Bowling Green Health Care Center.
He was the widower of Esther Durrett Davis. He is survived by his son, Hunter W. Davis, Jr. and his wife, Elaine Dunn Davis, a brother, James Gordon; and a sister, Caroline Quinnell.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green with Rev. Charles Tillapaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Wright's Burying Ground.

Ollie W. Layne, 94, of Ruther Glen died Wednesday, December 10, 2003 in Richmond. Born in Ashland, Mrs. Layne was a lifelong member of Independence Christian Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Layne and her daughter, Anna Hayes.
Survivors include her grandsons, Audubon L. and William Wayne Hayes; her great grandsons, Jason and Brandon Hayes and her son-in-law, Harold Hayes all of Ruther Glen and numerous nieces and nephews.

Julian H. Gatewood, 84, of Woodford died Wednesday, December 3, 2003 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Caroline, he had retired from General Products and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy E. Gatewood; four children, Nathan Gatewood of Woodford, Louise Carter of Ruther Glen, Sue Terry of Woodford and Brenda Kile of Ruther Glen; a sister, Elna Treblic of Woodford; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Melvin Gatewood.

Dr. Arthur Joseph Martin, 92, of Bowling Green, died Wednesday, December 4, 2003 at his home. Dr. Martin served God, his family, patients and his community. He was a native of Presque Isle, Maine and came to Caroline County and the medical profession in a round about way. After graduating from high school in Waterford, Connecticut, the 16 year old decided to move to Manhatten and lived with his older brothers. An accomplished jazz guitarist and musician, he was able to find work with the big bands that were popular in the late 20's. The 13 piece orchestra played at charity balls and at prep school socials. They were often led by a "big name' such as Rudy Vallee, Will Osborne or Eddie Duchen.
World War II interrupted Dr. Martin's musical career and he decided to enter medicine. He graduated from MCV at age 40. He also graduated Phi Beta Kappa. While in Richmond, he met his wife of 40 years, Frances Elizabeth Sheffield. He began his practice in Bowling Green, where he practiced for 32 years. He was truly one of our last "country doctors". He also served as Medical Examiner for Caroline for a number of years. Dr. Martin served on the Board of Directors for Caroline Savings Bank for 30 years and served as Secretary of the Mid-Tidewater Medical Society for 20 years.
In 1976, Dr. Martin's play, The Old Mansion, was performed which he also wrote all the music for. This endeavor took three years and was in celebration of the Bicentennial.
Survivors include his daughter, Peggy Sheffield Martin Wholey; his son-in-law, Michael Gerard Wholey; his grandson Arthur Barrett Martin Wholey; his nieces, Thelma Malone and Margaret Gallant and his nephew, Henry Barker.

Ruth Jones Hockaday, 82, of Woodford, died Monday, December 1, 2003 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Caroline County, she was the widow of Herman E. Hockaday, Sr.
Survivors include nine children; Arlene Kubacki of Richmond, Charlotte Storm of Partlow, Phyllis Acors of Fredericksburg, Wanda McAllister of Spotsylvania, Nancy Hart of Doswell, Patsy Overton of Spotsylvania, Wayne Hockaday of Milford, George Hockaday of Woodford and Donald Hockaday of Spotsylvania; two sisters, Grace Anderson of Woodford and Marian Griffin of Alexandria; thirty-two grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Herman E. Hockaday, Jr.

Spencer T. Snyder, 42, of Ladysmith, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004. Originally from Hudson, New York, he was a charter member of the Caroline Moose Club and a self-employed painting contractor.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy M. Snyder; and three children, Laura Olson and Spencer and Christopher Snyder, all of the home; two brothers and two sisters, Perry, Gary, Grace Snyder and Peggy DeJoy, all of Hudson, New York; mother-in-law, Viola Snyder; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Thelma J. Jones, 62, of Shumansville passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at her home. Born in West Virginia, she was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Shumansville and the Ashland Moose Lodge 2099.
Survivors include her husband, Lewis "Paul" Jones; daughter, Pamela Figg and her husband, Cary of Shumansville; granddaughter, Amy Figg of Shumansville; sons, Richard Legg and his wife, Betty of Mechanicsville and Paul, Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Richmond; her mother, Annabelle Gray of Shumansville; brothers, Raymond J. Gray and his wife, Shirley of Maryland, Lionel Gray and his wife, Erma and George Gray all of Pennsylvania and Damon Gray and his wife, Mary of Bowling Green; sister, Sue Duncan and her husband, Kenneth of South Carolina and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Kristen Figg.

Patricia H. "Pat" Spaulding, 67, of Bowling Green, died Monday, May 17, 2004 in Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Williamson, West Virginia, she was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Bowling Green, where she was a member of the choir. She was a Registered Nurse and had retired as division school nurse in Caroline County Public Schools. She was one of the founding members of the Virginia School Nurses Association and currently served on the board, representing Caroline, of RACSB.
Survivors include her husband, George Spaulding; two daughters, Karen L. Spaulding of Fredericksburg and Kathryn J. Spaulding of Atlanta, Georgia and a brother, Jim Hamilton of Henderson, Kentucky.

Robert L. "Bobby"Jones, 64, of Milford died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at his home. Born in Atlanta, he was a lifelong member of Salem Baptist Church. He was a carpenter for 25 years for Lancar in Milford and most recently for E.M. Williams and Son in Bowling Green.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Shirley A. Jones; two daughters, Norma Jones of Milford and Wanda Mengert and her husband, Ron, of Milford; a brother, Eddie Jones of Marengo, Ohio; a sister, Virginia Ann Durrette of Woodford; two grandchildren, Julie Mengert and Michael Randolph. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Randolph.

Cleveland S. Whittaker, 81, of Scottsville, formerly of Caroline County died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at his home. An evangelist for 30 years, he was one of the founders and trustees of Christian Outreach Tabernacle in Spotsylvania and was also an Army veteran of WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn L. Whittaker and a sister, Ruby Barlow of Shumansville.

Linda G. Sylvia, 59, of Bowling Green died May 3, 2004 in the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville. Born in Russell County, she had been employed with Flagg Leasing in Milford, as bookkeeper, for fifteen years. She had been a member of the Bowling Green Fire Department Auxillary and was an active member of Ladysmith Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Robert E. Sylvia; four sons, Ricky Sylvia of Mechanicsville, Jeff Sylvia of Woodford, Bradley Sylvia of Dawn and Tony Sylvia of Richmond; four sisters, Eva Mettee of Sandston, Gerry Bladen of Dumfries, Mary Lou Booher of Columbus, Ohio and Jean Buck of Abington; a brother, Garnett Gilbert of Louisville, Kentucky and eight grandchildren.
