Ruby Lee Ashing, 77, of Richmond, the widow of Darrel Wayne Ashing Sr., died April 25, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Lee Harrison and her husband, William H. IV; son Darrel Wayne Ashing Jr.; brother, Rueben Boatwright Hudgins of Stuart, Va.; two grandchildren, William H. V, and Elizabeth Lee Harrison, and many nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Blanche Spencer Chapter #11 Order of the Eastern Star. Brian Scott Bellile, 43, of Richmond, died April 26, 2001. He was the technical director of the Richmond Ballet for 12 years. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Anne Graham; a daughter, Kate Bellile; a brother, Larry Bellile; a sister, Susan Avery; nieces, Melora Rouse and her husband, Keith and Jodi Bellile; a nephew, Jason Bellile; brother-in-law, Michael Graham; sisters-in-law, Carole and Janet Graham; father and mother-in-law, James and Mary Graham; and many special friends. Claudia Saville Bradford, 52, of St. Petersburg, Florida, died on Monday, April 23, 2001. She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Clarke and stepfather, Carlyle Clarke of Heathsville, Virginia; William Saville, father, of Romney, W.Va.; three brothers, Greig and Robert Saville of Heathsville, Va. and Thomas Saville of Tappahannock, Va.; Cheri Adams, sister, of Callao, Va.; Connie Dawson, stepsister of Kilmarnock, Va.; Stan Martin, companion, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; James Saville, half brother, of Northern Virginia; and Martha Dailey, stepmother, of California. Claudia was recognized as an exceptional student; and upon completion of her junior year at Northumberland High School, she entered Radford College. In the early 1970s, she began her anthropological studies. Claudia studied under Dr. Tom Larson at Northern Virginia Community College. Dr. Larson founded the Anthropology Club of the World and took his students on expeditions of Togo, West Africa and Kenya, East Africa. Claudia led further expeditions. She studied the Kabre Tribe in Togo extensively. A funeral service will be held at Fairfields Baptist Church, Route 360 East in Burgess, Virginia on Thursday, May 3, 2001 at 11 a.m. The Rev. On April 26, 2001, our hearts were saddened by the passing of our brother, Leroy Raymond Charity. He was born in Chesterfield, Va in 1937 to the late Viola and John Henry Charity. He attended the Church of Christ, pastored by Elder Waller, for awhile. He was employed by Southern Material Plant and then to Meadow Brooks Golf Course until his mother became ill and he stopped to help with her, whom he loved dearly. He leaves to cherish his memories two sisters, Dorothy C. Harris of Chesterfield, Va. and Lucille C. Branch of Richmond, Va.; a brother, William Charity of Richmond, Va.; two uncles, Alfred Charity of Florida and Johnny Charity of South Carolina; a sister-in-law, Dorothy T. Charity; and brother-in-law, Howard Branch Sr. both of Richmond, Va.; 12 nieces, eight nephews; and a number of other relatives and friends. Gertrude Loving Daniel of Richmond, widow of Wilton Oran Daniel and daughter of the late Arrento and Blanche Ball Loving, died Friday, April 27, 2001. Vest; her brother and sisters, Ethel Loving, Harry Loving, Reva Edwards and Mary Gentry; and many very special nieces and nephews. HAMNER
John Daniel Hamner Jr., M.D., M.P.H., resident of Ashland, Va. for 60 years, died on April 26, 2001. Dr. Hamner was born April 13, 1911 in Church Road, Dinwiddie County, Va. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1935, and received his degree of Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1940. In 1936, he served as assistant Health Director for Virginia State Department of Health of Arlington County. He served as Health Director for Henrico, Southhampton, Hanover, Caroline and King William Counties from 1940 until June of 1958. From 1958 to 1968, he served as the Regional Director, Division of Local Health Services, for the Virginia State Department of Health. In 1968, Dr. Hamner was the Health Director for Fluvanna, Goochland and Louisa Counties, and in 1972 he served as Health Director for Charles City, Goochland, New Kent and Hanover Counties, until his retirement in June of 1977. Dr. Hamner was a past president of the Virginia Public Health Association, past president and charter member of the Virginia Chapter of the American Association of Public Health Physicians, member of the Medical Society of Virginia, past president and member of the Hanover County Medical Society, and member of the American Medical Association. He was the widower of Evelyn Shepherd of Richmond, Va.; and is survived by his daughter, Michelle H. Hamner, and son-in-law, William D. Hamner, Esq.; and grandchildren, Shandy P. Hamner and D. Gray Hamner, all of Ashland. Dr. Hamner was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Hanover Country Club, a past member of the Virginia Orchid Society and the Ashland Kiwanis Club, and past president of The Hanover Club. Services will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 Henry Street, Ashland, on April 29, 2001, at 2 p.m., with interment service at Woodland Cemetery afterwards. Elbert Neal Herring, 68, former Chairman of the Board of Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation died Thursday, April 26, 2001, of cancer at his home. Mr. Herring began his association with Krispy Kreme in 1966, when he purchased the Myrtle Beach, S.C. franchise. He later purchased the Wilmington, N.C. franchise and operated several stores in the Myrtle Beach-Wilmington area. In 1987, Mr. Herring was instrumental in a successful LBO of Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation led by fellow franchisee Joseph A. McAleer. He subsequently served on the company's Board from 1982-1993, and as its Chairman from 1989 until his retirement in 1993. Krispy Kreme Chairman, President and CEO Scott Livengood commented "All members of the Krispy Kreme family are saddened by the loss of Elbert Herring. Not only was he a long-time business associate, he was a close personal friend. His support during the early stages of our national expansion was critical to its success. He will be fondly remembered by all Krispy Kremers." Prior to his association with Krispy Kreme, Mr. Herring owned and operated the former Herring-Rexall and Peoples Walgreens chain of drugstores in the Myrtle Beach area. Mr. Herring was a well-known private investor along coastal North and South Carolina. He was a past Chairman of the Myrtle Beach Planning and Zoning Commision, a member of the Advisory Board of Carolina First Bank and the former Anchor Bank, and a member of the Administrative Board and Finance Committee of the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Coastal Academy, a member of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club and a member of Cane Island Hunt Club. A native of Clinton, N.C., Mr. Herring was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dominick Herring. He was also a RHO Chi graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Pharmacy School and a member of the UNC Chapter of Sigma Chi fraternity. Mr. Herring was predeceased by a son, Elbert Neal Herring Jr. Survivors include wife of 47 years, Joanne Weathers Herring of Myrtle Beach; his mother, Mrs. Paul Dominick Herring of Clinton, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Paul D. Herring of Crawfordsville, Ind.; a daughter, Ashley Herring Farley and son-in-law, Edward M.
