Gertrude Bruce Smith, age 91, entered into eternal rest on July 16, 2003. She was the daughter of the late Seddon J. Bruce and Emma Trice Bruce and also the widow of James Edward Smith. Most of her life was spent as an educator in Henrico County where she was a teacher, principal and librarian.
She is survived by two sisters, Evelyn Bruce Martin of Manquin and Allene Bruce Smith of Bowling Green. She also leaves nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews to cherish her memory.
Services will be held on Friday, July 18, at 2:00 PM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with burial in Greenlawn cemetery. The Rev. Daniel Carlton and the Rev. Chester Smith will conduct the service. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Her final escorts will be her nephews.
Malcolm Thomas, 91, of Ruther Glen, died Friday, July 11, 2003 at his home. Born in Caroline, he was a long-time member of Concord Baptist Church. He retired after 32 years from Reynolds Metals, Richmond.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Samuel Thomas; a stepdaughter and her husband, Peggy and Robert Giles of Glen Allen; a stepson and his wife, Cecil and JoAnne Bowles of Montpelier; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and six caregivers.
A funeral service will be held 2 PM, Tuesday, July 15 at Concord Baptist Church, Ruther Glen, with Rev. J.R. Dockum officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 PM, Monday at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.

Stephen E. Larrick, 50, of Bowling Green, Virginia, formerly of Alexandria, died July 8, 2003. He was a retired Fairfax County firefighter and an avid musician and guitar player.
Survivors include his son, Henry S. Larrick of King George; two sisters, Connie Morris of Alexandria and Jane Frisco of Spotsylvania; three brothers, David, Jeff and Christopher Larrick all of Alexandria.
A cremation was held and a private family service will be at a later date.
Lorene Peyton Payne, 90, of Chilesburg, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at Bowling Green Health Care Center. Born in Caroline County, she was the widow of Linwood Thomas Payne. She was a lifelong member of County Line Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Billy Satterwhite; two grandsons and their wives, Marc and Michelle Satterwhite and Todd and Kim Satterwhite; six great grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, Karen, Will, Andy and Joseph Satterwhite; three sisters, Mary Lee Satterwhite of Richmond, Dene Greene of Fredericksburg and Elsie Harrison of Beaverdam; and a dear friend, Gaynell Haynes. She was preceded in death by a sister, Nellie Burruss and two brothers, Thomas and George Peyton.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, July 11, 2003 at County Line Baptist Church, Ruther Glen with Rev. Fred Skaggs officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green.

Esther D. Davis, 73, of Ruther Glen, died Tuesday July 8, 2003 in Mary Washington Hospital. She was a lifelong member of Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church and had been active in the Ladysmith Fire Department Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Hunter W. Davis, Sr.; her son and daughter-in-law, Hunter "Woody", Jr. and Elaine Dunn Davis of Manquin; four sisters, Mildred Durrett, Marie Summers and Doris Taylor all of Ladysmith and Rachel Rowley of Thornburg; two brothers, Stuart Durrett of Ladysmith and L. E. Durrett, Jr. of Hanover.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 11 at 2:00 PM at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. Charles Tillapaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Wright's Burying Ground, Ladysmith. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Thursday, 7:00 - 9:00 PM.
Theresa "Mammie" Gatewood, 95, of Ruther Glen, died Sunday, July 6, 2003 in Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born in Woodford, she was the widow of George Gatewood. She attended Concord Baptist Church and was the oldest living member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She was also an avid gardener.
Survivors include six children, Lucy Mayo of Fredericksburg, Blanche McDonald of Ruther Glen, Thomas Gatewood of Fredericksburg, Mary Paytes of Spotsylvania, Robert Gatewood of Verona and Ann Southworth of Ruther Glen; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, seven great- great grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by two children, Frances Hemric and Kenneth Gatewood.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 9 at 11:00 AM in Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with Rev. J.R. Dockum officiating. Burial will follow in the Gatewood cemetery, Ruther Glen. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

Mary Kemmer Peterson, 93, of Ashland, formerly of Norfolk, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003. Born in Indiana, she was the widow of Garland Burruss Peterson.
She graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago and worked as an artist in Chicago and New York City. During the the 1930's she was an artist for the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. She was an aircraft riveter during World War II.
Survivors include three children, Olivia Radcliffe of Baltimore, MD, Phillip Peterson of Virginia Beach and Pam Hume of Doswell; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Amanda McCulloch and Garland and Michael Hume and one great grandson, Evan John McCulloch-Miller.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, July 6, 2003 in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Ruther Glen, with Rev. Steve Vacca officiating.
Fannie Taliaferro Webb, 98, widow of Charles S. Webb, died peacefully on June 26, 2003. Mrs. Webb was proud that she was born, raised and lived her life in Caroline County. She worked many of those years for her husband in his dental office. She was always community minded, serving her church, Bowling Green Baptist, as well as serving as president of the Caroline Historical Society and taking interest in many town activities, helping whenever she could.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Frances and C. Dick Burch, III; three grandchildren, David and John Burch(his wife Joan) and Carol Thedieck; four great grandchildren, Evan, Alex and Annie Burch and Virginia Thedieck.
As requested by Mrs. Webb, her body has been donated as an anatomical gift to the state of Virginia. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Bowling Green Baptist Church, Bowling Green.

Otho Campbell Whitaker, 81 of Richmond, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003 in Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born in Caroline, he was a WWII Marine Corp veteran.
Survivors include two sisters, Irene E. Kalodomis of Chicago and Connie Wright of Bowling Green; three nephews, Keith Kalodomis and Eric Kalodomis of Chicago and Wayne Wright of Bowling Green.
A funeral service will be Friday, June 27 at 2:00 PM in the Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, with burial in Lakewood cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday 7:00 - 8:30 PM.
William Rogers Wright, Jr., 38 of Ruther Glen, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003. We lost a very special person, a loving husband, a devoted father and friend. Roger left this world doing what he loved-flying. He enjoyed life to the fullest, including hunting, fishing and building, of which he shared with his family and friends. He was a remarkable man. Strong in his Christian faith and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone, anytime. He was a proud employee of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative, in Bowling Green, with 12 years of service. In addition to his many accomplishments, Roger was devoted to his community and his children in supporting Caroline Little League and the Cub Scout Pack #173. Roger touched many lives through his humor and love of life and especially his dedication to his family.
Roger leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Tracy C. Wright; a son, William "Randy" Wright and a daughter, Courtney Jean Wright both of the home; his mother, Barbara W. Wright of Bowling Green; his father and step-mother, William R., Sr. and Pearl Wright of Woodford; a sister, Angel Lambert and her husband, Ted of Bowling Green; his maternal grandmother, Audrey M. Wilson of Charleston, WVA; two uncles, Sonny Wilson and family of Doswell and David Wright and family of Bowling Green; his father-in-law, Gene Cox of Ruther Glen; sisters-in-law, Pamela Hoy and Debra Powers and their families of Mechanicsville; and many wonderful friends.

Survivors include a son, David Wiley; three daughters, Ms. Russell Wiley, Martha Trower and Linda Carter; a sister, Margaret Ownby; and four grandsons.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, June 7, 2003 at Bowling Green United Methodist Church with Rev. Terry Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Lakewood cemetery, Bowling Green.
